After coming across SVSSS-related stuff on the blogs I follow/stalk, I finally gave in to my curiosity and checked the donghua.

I tried reading the novel a while back, but it didn't entice me that much so I didn't finish it. I think seeing the donghua helped spark my interest again.

Then I held back from watching Ep 10 for the past week and started reading the novel. I'm almost finished with it.

It's so different from MDZS. I find myself laughing most of the time. Luo Binghe and Shen Qingqiu (Shen Yuan edition) are such disasters. I'm sure the more senior fans have already written eloquent posts about how codependent they are, Shen Jiu and Yue Qingyuan's relationship, why Cucumber Bro and Airplane Bro transmigrated to the novel they read/wrote, why the System exists in the first place, writing what you're passionate about vs writing what'll bring in money, and who is Jiang Cheng's counterpart in SVSSS, among other things. I think I read a post suggesting it's Liu Qingge? Or is it Shen Jiu?

Anyway, back to the donghua. I hope I'm not alone in saying I like the character design. At first it was a little jarring---maybe because I'm not used to watching CGI---and the donghua isn't actually 100% polished a la FFVII remake (on a side note, someone joked that Yue Qingyuan seems to be from the PS2 era). Regardless, I appreciate the design since it gave me an idea how the characters look like.

Which is why I'm a bit surprised when I started trawling the SVSSS tags here at Tumblr and saw art depicting Luo Binghe as a curly-haired, big-muscled mountain of a man. Perhaps this is influenced by Western taste? I'm not an expert in Chinese literature or culture, but in some pics I've seen from Cdramas those of demon blood who play major roles don't have the physique of someone who can crack walnuts with their biceps. Think Wang Yue (Wang Zhuocheng) from Legend of Chongzi and that actor from Love Between Fairy and Devil. Furthermore, Luo Binghe is described as a pretty boy in the novel so at this point, I'm of the humble opinion that the donghua got his body type right. And I subscribe to the standards of beauty from the source culture.

Okay, going back to the donghua Ep 10. As we say here in my country, papunta na tayo sa exciting part---I'm going to see Luo Binghe get pushed down the Endless Abyss by his beloved Shizun. Oh, the angst, the drama.

Nope. Nothing of the sort happened.

✨️TCGF Thoughts✨️

⚠️Spoiler warning kinda⚠️

This one hurt my bsf so I thought I'd share it with the world so they can be hurt with her 😌. Now saddle up cause we are about to have some...emotions.

So within book 6, we learn about the stipulations that were provided to Xie Lian when he was branded with his curse shackle. One of those stipulations being, though he was knocked to the mortal realm again, he could not really die nor could he age (a nerfed god). But we are focusing on the stipulation in which he never physically ages.

So for the past 800 years we see Xie Lian in the same physical state he was in when he initially ascends at the age of 17. Not a day older, and not a day younger for 800 years.

After his initial banishment, Mu Qing and Feng Xin are also mortals once again as well....but they were never given such stipulations that Xie Lian was given...And AS FAR AS I KNOW, we are not given an exact timeline in which Mu Qing and Feng Xin ascend. (please correct me if I'm wrong)

MEANING in the donghua and danmei when Xie Lian enters the communication array and we see the two generals they could EASILY be in their early 20's. And if you're like me you notice details! Feng Xin was quite shocked as well as a little I wanna say tongue tied, for lack of better words, when he realized just who it was who knocked down his palace.

We often know what it looks like for Feng Xin to have to slowly diffuse when he is pissed and annoyed, and when he is completely just disarmed. And we most definitely witnessed that in the first scene he enters in both book and show.

And then you have Mu Qing who immediately recognized the prince he once served, surprised of his returned and then immediately annoyed when he was not recognized. Possibly reading the situation wrong, as he always does and assumes this is a moment Xie Lian looked down at him.

But just imagine in. They haven't seen him in 800 years. And he has not grown a day. He looks the exact same as he did on the days they were no longer in his service. I personally think this fact hits Feng Xin the hardest as he is quick to rush away from the array. Painful memories leaving behind the prince he swore to stand by, perhaps.

Teehee, it's just a thought 😌 I have even deeper thoughts on this, but this is just a lil tid but I needed to get out cause my brain rot is so real

Are many of the animes here on crunchyroll? Or netflix? I know a bunch are but I also wonder if it's a good suggestion list ^^

Considering the numerous times I had to find alternate trailers because a lot of Crunchroll’s YouTube videos are blocked in my country… yes, a lot of the shows are on Crunchyroll. A few are on Netflix, and some are on Funimation.

As for donghua (Chinese anime), most can only be watched legally through Iqiyi or Bilibili. For the latter, it might be hard to access when you don’t understand Chinese. But fret not, these two also have official YouTube channels, so you can try checking there too.

While I’m at this, I might as well just list the sites where you can watch certain donghua...

Legend of Luo Xiaohei - There are no official subs, but there are numerous fansubs on YouTube. The Legend of Hei prequel movie is on Crunchyroll, though. (Please watch the movie in Chinese… They literally translated the characters’ names to English in the dub, and it’s so cringe 😭)

Link Click - Funimation (S1 only), and Crunchyroll and Bilibili (both seasons). Link Click S1 official subs were awful, though, so I suggest looking into fansubbed versions. I think there are 2-3 different fansubs for it.

Trese, the lone Filipino anime on the list, is available on Netflix.

I have not been the same since watching The Untamed and reading Mo Dao Zu Shi. I have watched the drama, read the books, read the comic, and watched the Donghua, and I just can’t get over how amazing it is. This is a love story done right. I love slow burn love stories and my god this one just hit different. I started reading HOB and finished the donghua, I also finished Word of Honor, but I need to find a drama as good as The Untamed. That was my little rant. If anyone wants to anylise the book, drama, and music with me please feel free hahaha. (I’ve also listened to the whole Untamed album on repeat 😅)

No, like, seriously. These are two completely different individuals??? One is just a brat, and the other is a breed-able bratty bottom, and I’ll be honest here, it took me such a long time to fully appreciate the donghua design because I was so used to STARember’s design. And yes, I threw a fit to every single person I know about how vastly different his design is, I can show you the receipt.

Since his height isn’t listed… (as far as I’m aware), I’m convinced that he’s the shortest adult character in the series (yes, shorter than Ling Wen… who is TALLER than Xie Lian??????) Thus, if he were to be a dog, I can imagine him as a chihuahua. And everyone around him would be like “awww is the tiny little pookie angry???” and just make fun of him, because that’s what people do to angry Chihuahuas for some reason.

This is him throwing a fit at Pei Ming (yes, PM is a German Shepherd in my mind. Yes, I will make videos on this.)
