Funguary '24: Silver Leaf Fungus | Lilac Seadragon

Coincidentally we have a dragon in the year of the dragon just a few days shy of the Lunar New Year! 🐉 Based on the timing I posted this, it's also Valentine's Day ❤️

Silver leaf is actually a fungal disease caused by chondrostereum purpureum that viciously attacks the Rosaceae family that includes roses, apricots, plums, peaches and almonds. It also attacks deciduous trees like maple and hawthorn. The name is derived from the silvering of leaves on affected hosts, and the disease is often fatal. The fungus is as widespread as its hosts and can be a serious parasite to living trees.

Inspired by the properties of silver leaf disease and wanting to do something in spirit of the year of the dragon, I came up with a poisonous seadragon species. Halfway through I realised the pokemon Dragalge is basically the same concept but mine is quite a different take, I hope!

Really struggled with the rendering. I gave up multiple times and kept sighing on how to fix the shading because no matter what or how much I edited, I wasn't satisfied but I had to move on. It was fun coming up with a design and its background, though!

Each #Funguary2024 I do will be depicted as a sea creature and designed like an encyclopedia page. Funguary is a yearly drawing challenge in February hosted by artist Feefal to turn fungi prompts into characters.

These are plants shown in Dragon Age but aren't named in universe, just in their model files or through identification of the textures. Since most filler plant textures are just that of real world plants.

**NOTE:** When I mention they are not the known name of any plant, this comes with the caveat of being popular common names. Common names are highly variable and inconsistent. They depend on regional knowledge and association. Some travel farther than others. Common names are also not reliable identifiers.

Acacia: Black Wood ~ Note: Black Wood is a type of acacia. Both acacia and black wood are named assets.

Artichoke ~ Note: Identification comes from asset name, the artichoke flower is used as ornamentation of a box.

Boxwood ~ A type of shrub, identification comes from asset name.

Bradford Pear ~ Their fruits are edible, however their flowers are known to emit a smell akin to rotting meat. Identification comes from asset name.

There are two versions of the texture the "fixed" version is used in JoH dlc and thus explains the difference in appearance. This is not the name of a known mushroom.

Additional Notes and Trivia

Ironwood - Unclear if this is an alternative name, the actual name of the plant, or both.

Morel - This mushroom is inferred due to the existence of Blighted Morel. However it is not explicitly specified there is a non-blighted morel.

Sponge Root - Though canonical as it is mentioned and shown in World of Thedas vol. 2 on pg. 138 with a collection of deep mushroom and surface mushroom illustrations. This mushroom was cut twice from Inquisition. It was cut from the base game as a craftable, it had a much different appearance from its final design, and then it was cut again from Trespasser. It does however still make an appearance in Inquisition as the inventory icon for Crystal Grace.

Unnamed Glowing Mushroom Is mentioned in multiplayer when there are two Lukas playing.

Unnamed Mushroom These brown mushrooms are seen in the Fallow Mire and the Frostback Basin. They are shown in two different sizes ranging from shorter than a dwarf to taller than one.

There is one unlisted mushroom, its assets is named "red mushroom" and thus is identified by textures. These is not a canon name but is included for completeness. Amanita Muscaria: More commonly know as fly agaric or fly amanita, the red top with white spots is an iconic in its imagery. You will find large swaths of these mushrooms in the Frostback Basin. Their assets is named "Red Mushroom".

Winterberry is a real plant. However, from what we see in DA2, it does not the same as the plant we have in the real world, just a shared common name.

Wormroot is another real plant name. However, due to the description in The Calling, it does not seem to be the same plant. In The Calling it is used to treat the venom of a giant spider. The real world plant is used to treat parasites in the gut and does not seem to hold any shared uses in folk lore, folk medicine, or western medicine practices.

i've done a few scent association lists for individual ghouls, and i thought it would be fun to do one for elements instead! it's a little more general, which lets me include perfume that i really like but that don't fit any of the ghouls exactly. as always, i would love your feedback!!

If you were to cultivate a fruit orchard, what would you grow?

PEARS I fucking love pears. I have a pear tattooed on my ribcage. Also it’s a little sexy when you bite into a ripe pear and it’s… juicy….

And because I’ve looked into it before, I know that it’s important to have multiple pear trees and varieties because of how they pollinate. But I’d also grow one or two other fruits to give my pollinators some variety. So let’s say cherries and plums because I do love a stone fruit.

Plus there doesn’t just have to be TREES in an orchard so obviously we need strawberries. And to extend our growing season we need some colder weather plants like blueberries—and fuck it, let’s bring back the cultivation of blackcurrant in the US! It was actually banned for awhile in the early 20th century because it’s a common carrier of some particular fungus that particularly effects a lot of trees native to the US (or something along those lines) and now it’s allowed again but people haven’t grown it here for so long that it’s just like. Not really a standard crop.

Luckily I’m in Connecticut and we have Currant Affair, which is a Connecticut based farm/company that grows blackcurrant and sells blackcurrant juice (Ribena but not a concentrate it’s just regular juice).

Travel Diary Entry # 5 - Strange and Wonderful Dreams (and laryngitis)

Last night I dreamt of a place that can't possibly be real. It was a place with glowing blue pools and great trees set on a cliff overlooking a sea so clear that the vibrant corals under the waves were visible. The pools were shaped like lotus petals and arrayed around a central gazebo where one could look out at the sea. The space was terraced and there were additional infinity pools located on tiers below the main lotus pools. The great trees almost completely shaded the whole place, with only dappled sunlight making its way to the ground. A type of lichen drooped down from the trees with brilliant wisteria-like blooms. There was also a pleasant warm and fragrant breeze lightly blowing at all times.

In the dream this place existed in India and my dad and I were visiting as tourists. The blue pools are reached through a resort that (in terms of architecture) resembles the Getty Center in LA. We reached the pools at sunset and both of us were completely entranced by the beauty. There were many other visitors from around the world here and everyone seemed to be operating in a kind of euphoric daze. Me being me, I decided to take out my camera to take pictures of the place but no matter what I tried - my camera kept malfunctioning. I was incredibly frustrated so one of the other visitors suggested I use my phone to take pictures. When I tried that - my camera app started bugging out! It was as if this place wasn't meant to be pictured. While I was laser focused on trying to document the place, I did have random conversations with the other visitors and I noticed some of them were behaving strangely. One of them told me that the place made the "mally" or malleable, and that a lot of relationships failed in the place because temptation was too strong. After she told me this, I literally watched a couple drift apart as they paired up with separate visitors and went in opposite directions.

In any case, I "wake up" from this dream and then tell my dad what I saw. I then open my phone and go through my gallery, where miraculously - there are pictures and even videos of the place! My dad, however, has no recollection of this place and suggests I created the images and videos through AI in my sleep - a kind of strange sleepwalking. I accept this and then begin telling someone (who happens be to Jenna Lyons, the fashion designer and new RHONY housewife) about the dream - who then suggests I consume a plum covered in a strange fungus to see worlds even more beautiful than the one I saw.

And then I wake up again. With laryngitis and the complete loss of my voice.

If dreams are messages from our subconscious, wtf was all that about?? Did I just catch a glimpse of some kind of fairy world?

got a chore I’d been slightly putting off done. I needed to cut off an apple tree branch in the “orchard”. Way back 20+ years ago when we moved her my mother had planted apple trees without doing any care research, so the trees have just grown wild, and produce teeny-tiny little apples that aren’t very edible. 

So after following @hedgehog-moss and seeing the care they take of their place, I got inspired and looked up apple tree care, and well, just last year with some gentle and not-so-gentle pruning I managed to make the trees a touch happier, and this year I have been working a little, only it keeps raining, or being very cold, and unfortunately for happy trees, you need to prune when it’s cold out. ^_^’

So, I finally got my rear in gear and went out to saw off a fairly large branch (it was growing out sideways and smooshing the trunk of one of the other branches that was growing “correctly”. 

Also I took one of my dogs, well, my moms dogs, I am very allergic, out with me and hooked him to a different tree so he could have a small outing as a treat. He happily cow watched while I sawed, he was startled when various bits hit the ground, but some babytalk and brief reassurance he was like “ah, things are okay.”

Poor doggy was a stray that showed up in our yard and already mostly grown and we’ve never gotten him out of the cat chasing habbit, or car chasing, or cow chasing, so he has to stay hooked up in various places. My mom does take him on daily walks. Even the brief time I spent with him today I was coughing and sneezing, I’d hoped the cold would help but alas, he is a very large and fluffy allergen. ^_^’

But at long last, apple tree branch down. 

Now to work on our ornamental plums...sadly they all got infected years ago with the “poop on a stick” fungus and so they all have to be cut down. *weep*

These are plants shown in Dragon Age but aren't named in universe, just in their model files or through identification of the textures. Since most filler plant textures are just that of real world plants.

**NOTE:** When I mention they are not the known name of any plant, this comes with the caveat of being popular common names. Common names are highly variable and inconsistent. They depend on regional knowledge and association. Some travel farther than others. Common names are also not reliable identifiers.

Acacia: Black Wood ~ Note: Black Wood is a type of acacia. Both acacia and black wood are named assets.

Artichoke ~ Note: Identification comes from asset name, the artichoke flower is used as ornamentation of a box.

Boxwood ~ A type of shrub, identification comes from asset name.

Bradford Pear ~ Their fruits are edible, however their flowers are known to emit a smell akin to rotting meat. Identification comes from asset name.

Calla Lily ~ Note: Not named but identified by the texture used. It is seen in Val Royeaux planters.

Cattail ~ Note: Seen through out DAO and DAI, identification comes from asset name.

Coleus ~ Note: Not named but identified by the texture used. It is seen in Val Royeaux planters and in the Frostback Basin.

Cypress: Italian Cypress, Topiary Cypress ~ Note: In terms of the Italian Cypress, in world it wouldl likely be called the "Antivan Cypress" given that Antiva is pulling from Italian culture, food, environments, and other inspirational elements. Cypress is a plant that is named in canon.

Daikon Radish ~ Note: Found on Dennet's farm, identification comes from asset name.

Redwood ~ Note: Identified by the name of the file asset. Found in the Winter Palace, Exalted Plains, and on multiplayer maps.

Additional Notes and Trivia

Morel - This mushroom is inferred due to the existence of Blighted Morel. However it is not explicitly specified there is a non-blighted morel.

There is one unlisted mushroom, its assets is named "red mushroom" and thus is identified by textures. These is not a canon name but is included for completeness. Amanita Muscaria: More commonly know as fly agaric or fly amanita, the red top with white spots is an iconic in its imagery. You will find large swaths of these mushrooms in the Frostback Basin. Their assets is named "Red Mushroom".

My next door neighbor

CHAPTER 13:

1. We’ve been planting away.

2. I gave her some of the blueberry plants I rescued

3. I gifted her a crab apple tree, they had to get rid of a tree that was Sick with a fungus that affects plum and peach trees. She was worried was going to make mine sick. 🥹

4. She shared some of her hostas and planted for me

5. It was her 40th bday so brought her some goodies from the Old Mill Tennessee.

6. She gave me her first zucchini to bring to my mom. It made it!

7. Our neighborly ways have been noticed. Neighbor across the street from me… I gave her some black and red raspberry plants. She planted peach trees and when I’m back I’ll be sharing some blackberry plants.

I guess it’s a good thing we making others stretch their neck to see what’s going on 🤣🤣🤣
