okay like i know (white) writers are more nervous to write poc characters bc they don't want to accidentally Be Offensive and like. yeah you should like. at least know a minimal amount about the culture of the character you're writing but also i feel like it's also contributed to a lot of (white) comic writers now avoiding poc characters entirely and see. i get you're trying to like "stay in your lane" but when you avoid writing poc characters. thats kind of also an issue too. you get that. right. that ignoring already established poc characters in favour of white characters is a Bad thing right.

I worry some people are going to see any Lilo and Stitch live action remake criticism and deflect it all by saying "but they actually feature POC!"

I think what's very fascinating to me is that, along with the resounding denial many have that Rauru is a flawed character in his own right, that a new argument is starting to rise; that the main problem with Ganondorf is that he is coded as a person of color. If he was not a person of color, then people would be less inclined to argue on his behalf, people would not paint Rauru, Sonia, or the concept of Hyrule as anything other than good and righteous, and people would finally be able to fully embrace that Ganondorf is the only person with flaws, evil intent, imperialistic tendencies, and is literally the only problem that Hyrule has. This is because the game tells us this much, but because Ganondorf is coded as a person of color, it is problematic.

Honestly, I think the HTTYD live action should just do what that one video of Kit Harington and Toothless did (or Who Framed Roger Rabbit did, or kinda-sorta like Muppets-focused movies).
The dragons are animated exactly like they are in the DWA franchise. The humans are live action.
Dragons are gonna have be animated ANYWAY.

could i, an eighteen year old with zero experience running a d&d podcast and a patreon for said podcast, do better than the council who've had several years of experience and amassed a fan base who so willingly offer (sometimes constructive) criticism on all that's not working? well i don't know, because i don't have the resources or time or energy for a project like that, but i do still understand that their current system isn't working

I’ve noticed that anytime there’s a live-action adaptation of a children’s property they almost always cast a non-white as the lead female character while the male leads are all still white.
Then the entire internet bullies an innocent girl for the crime of being non-white while the studio that cast her gives her little to no protection

Lifelong PTSD, disability resulting from abuse/neglect, and sexual abuse all count as life endangering violence to me. I just didn't make that distinction because we're talking about a kid's and family movie and I didn't want to bring the mood down that bad.
The foster/adoption/ward system in America is not designed to raise children into success, and the system of 99% traumatized and "broken" kids aren't desireable enough to get adopted. MOST kids who dont get adopted end up homeless. The foster system is a broken kid to homeless pipeline. I AM factoring in all forms of "unpleasant childhood" when I say if homelessness isn't preferable, there is no other option than staying with your shitty fucking family.
Also, shut the fuck up Harry Potter blog
I've seen some people bitch abt people wording it as "Nani gives Lilo up to the state" (because she goes to live with neighbors instead! 😋 teehee). But like no.
Because realistically, in a situation where the state was involved, Lilo would not go live with some random neighbor and some flakey nobody guy with no blood relation to Lilo, no stable nuclear family core living situation, and NO prior mention of this arrangement being an option.
The insidious nature of the custody situation is defanged in the movie by both having Lilo live with the neighbor AND by changing the social worker to an indigenous woman. If it's a message coming from "one of your own people" and Lilo goes to live "with more of her own people," it's a lot harder to clock that an indigenous child was forcibly separared from her family BY THE FUCKING STATE in a piece of imperialist propaganda.
Taking kids away from a family that is not LIFE-ENDANGERINGLY VIOLENT is NOT the solution to unsustainable family situations. The solution that is the least traumatizing, the least damaging to communities, and the most cost effective for the government is to provide support networks and resources to struggling families.
The wording of the ending doesn't matter, because the influence of the propaganda is the same.

Ok a few things because trust me I am aware about how awful everything feels
One.
If you know someone who is not legally here no you don’t. Do not mention them online even if it’s expressing concern. Again.
DO NOT SAY ANYTHING ONLINE ABT FRIENDS AND FAMILY WHO MAY NOT BE HERE LEGALLY.
Two.
Know your rights if ICE comes to talk you. You have every right to not talk to them.
Tumblr media
This is for my state so your rights may be different state to state so please do your research. If you know someone here non legally make sure to pass this information to them.
Three.
If you are an employer or employee here are your rights if ice comes to your school or workplace.
This man is a lawyer
Four.
Do not talk about someone or yourself getting an abortion if you are in states currently in danger of reproductive rights. Both irl and online.
Five.
Trust only close friends and family WHO HAVE EXPLICITLY GIVEN THEIR VIEWS with your reproductive health if you are in states currently under threat of reproductive rights being taken.
Six.
If you are in states with no protections for transgender people or youth. Do not mention being trans or knowing trans people.
Seven.
If you are going to a protest here are few things to note and bring.
Cover your face, tattoos, scars, and hair if it’s dyed abnormal colors.
Do not engage with police. They are not there to protect you they are they for arrests.
If someone is trying to rile up the crowd into looting or burning ignore them.
Bring a first aid kit.
Bring bottles of milk to help with pepper spray. (Correction do NOT USE MILK! Use water or saline solution and take out contacts!!!)
If you are white or cis advocate for your poc and visibly queer people. They will be targeted first during arrests.
Lastly say nothing if you are arrested. Request a lawyer immediately.
Always film if someone is being arrested you have a right to film. This goes for if someone is also being detained by ice.
Anyway please stay safe. We will make it.

thinking about veilguard and bioware in general, i think we are reaching a point where people need to grapple with the inherent limits of what stories can be told in our Current Society and in AAA gaming companies.
on a labour level: mass layoffs, tons of developers leaving despite previously talking about how passionate and happy they were to be involved, not even paying severance, and crunching employees to the point of burnout. this is unfortunately pretty standard for AAA game companies.
on a cultural level: it is SO white and SO centrist-ly Canadian. i wrote up these asks outlining how. it is a repeated pattern of writing in which they go into tortured racial oppression allegories at best, while constantly peppering in a "but BOTH SIDES were wrong and made mistakes :( :( :(", in between their fictional atrocities that are clearly mirroring irl genocides and enslavement. or at worst, it's "the qunari are radical islamic borg" which has even less nuance. i personally thought, since dai came out in 2014, and a lot has changed since then about the world and in public awareness, that this would have filtered into the narrative and resulted in more satisfying and historically grounded writing. unfortunately not the case. it's shocking if you compare it to how sharp and aware and unflinching something like disco elysium is.
so what does this mean?
under these conditions, it is unavoidable that we get development by people who are rapidly cycled out of the company or demoralized into burnout. we get digestible, easy little soundbites of lore without much substance, because any complexity needs more time and coordination rather than the process of "quick, we have these assets, a lot of people involved in making them just got laid off, we need to make Something by next quarter to show the CEO". we get very little cohesion between games, despite the clear intent from dai to have so many plot points set up to follow through in a sequel, because the team and development are so chaotic that they can't hold onto a vision and complete it.
we also get this inherent caution and "conservatism" from the narrative, because on an ideological level, they're largely white people who want cops to be included in pride. so any major change to even a fictional society is Bad and Scary, and shouldn't be done without making sure that every character finger-wags appropriately at non-state violence. there is clearly not much ideological or even ethnic diversity within the leadership; or at least not enough that anyone there felt comfortable even speaking up on minor issues like the Incredibly Orientalist Isabela Outfit, let alone anything larger.
i don't personally think there's too much value in trying to analyze veilguard's plot or lore at this point. the final product is chaotically developed and does not seem to reflect the goals of the creators as set up in prior games, it's basically a ship of theseus in terms of the people and ideas involved in making it. this is sad for all of us, who were interested in the story, and attached to the characters, and were creatively fulfilled by engaging in the fandom. it's probably worse for the developers who have lost their jobs, burnt out, or feel unhappy with the game that they spent years of their life working on. it's certainly miserable as an indictment of The Industry, as well as the general societal climate of white Canadian centrism.
the solution is to create a society where people can develop games in peace and prosperity and stay on projects for longer, rather than constantly getting turfed out without severance pay. and to get some genuine leftists, poc, and indigenous people on staff who can weigh in and provide significant input, rather than a Council Of Liberal White Edmontonians every time.
in the meantime, at the very least, let's please stop preordering AAA games and supporting companies who notably abuse their employees.

ENM/Poly circles explicitly discourage real talk around jealousy, and practical considerations around nonmonog in ways that routinely exclude and excise POC and disabled people.
ENM/Poly expects everyone involved to act as though “love” is the reason for every relationship choice. Cliche #1: love isn’t finite. Which… sure. Maybe love isn’t finite, but attention and time sure are— and those are at a premium.
Cliche #2: Love is all you need/love is what makes a family. I am familiar with criticism of this from a family abolition, anticapitalist standpoint, but I have seen this be uncritically repeated by ENM/Poly people. It’s not true that love is what makes a relationship work or not work. It’s also about dumb shit, like geographical proximity and practicality. Good luck being ENM if you can’t regularly host because you have roommates or live at home. Good luck being the gold standard of ENM (out to everyone, including family and maybe even the workplace!) if you are any kind of marginalized. Love is simply not enough. There’s real world shit to consider.
Most ENM/Poly people are white gen x’ers and older millenials for a reason. It’s a framework that works awesome if you have abundant spare space, disposable income to blow, and free time. Plus most ENM/Poly people are heavily in therapy, and just have a fuckton of time to deal with their various baggages… or at least like to posture as though they are doing those things.
Non monog can be liberatory— disabled polycules caring for one another. QPRs! Multiparent households! But ENM/Poly is very lodged in a liberal, hyper-independent Super Good Boundaries Thank You Very Much world of its own, and so most of the “resources” like More Than 2 or Polysecure have hella flaws in that respect.
COME OFF ANON SO I CAN FOLLOW YOU! Because you just said a whole word.
I find "ethical nonmonogamy" and polyamory circles to be viscerally unpleasant and alienating to be in as a crazy, chaotic antipsych person who does not always make choices for carefully therapized, restrained reasons -- and who doesn't believe that most other people do either, no matter how much they claim to.
I don't fuck multiple people to serve some higher purpose; I do it because I'm horny, impulsive, and have a variety of niche fetishes that are really difficult to satisfy.
I didn't choose to be openly nonmonogamous because I nurtured my soul and found that it was abundant with love that I just had to give -- all my relationships already were nonmonogamous at one point or another, either because I cheated or the other person did or both, and I eventually decided to move with my feelings rather than against them, and to stop denying all that is inside me -- all of the hunger and darkness as well as the light.
And I can't say that my nonmonogamy is inherently "ethical" either -- just like my monogamy sure wasn't! I'm a human being, and a crazy one at that, I get jealous, I have emotional blowups, I lash out and fuck other people to make myself feel better or to affirm that I am desired, I make big demands of the people I date, I fail to show up for people consistently, I get hurt, and I hurt others, and I will continually have more to learn. I will also continually have wild animal emotions and triggers, and I won't always deal with them in the way my partner(s) might want me to. I try to avoid hurting other people needlessly, of course, but sometimes your own needs are incompatible with another person's, and hurt is inevitable.
When there is only so much time and attention available in our lives, it's true that somebody's often going to come up short. And ultimately the person that I choose above all others is me. And so, no, I can't say I'm always doing nonmonogamy in some caring yet dispassionate way, or that love is the solution to all problems -- I am driven by passion and need, and sometimes being alive in those ways means getting hurt, or hurting in turn.
I would echo essentially all that you've said. We need time and resources and spaces to enjoy privacy with other people, and if you're not some rich work-from-homer, that shit's all in short supply. I hate the sheen of calm positivity that "ENM" and polyamory folks tend to place on everything -- as if no choices they make are fueled ever by bitterness, dislike, resentment, or hell, fucking white hot irrational DESIRE. With how fair and measured so many of them make their polyamory sound, I don't even see what's fun about any of it.
Sometimes you want to upend your whole life because you're so down bad for a person. Sometimes you hate the shit out of your partner's partners and you say and do little manipulative shitty things to convey those feelings, or to try and blow the relationship up. Sometimes the hours just don't add up and somebody gets shafted. Sometimes you make a promise and then you can't follow through, or just don't WANT to anymore because you have changed.
These are real human realities whether we like it or not, and I find it terribly unrealistic AND unsexy to refuse to acknowledge all the darkness and frustration that comes out in any relationship. I think a lot of the ENM/poly crowd that is white and middle class and heavily therapized is so averse to naming anything edgy or prickly in themselves that they make their spaces actively hostile to anybody who openly expresses negative feelings. That means Black & brown people get tone-policed a ton, "mad" people like me get no-true-scotsmanned out of "ethical" nonmonogamy for ever doing anything messily, and all the romance and sexiness of relationships gets sanded down into a Canva-graphic beige blandness of weekly polycule meetings and processing sessions.
In this world of self-optimization, even fucking and loving other people has to be cast as therapuetic -- our desires must justify themselves by somehow making us better, more capable, more controlled people, But fuck that. Sometimes sex or love is worth exploding your whole life over. The ENM/poly crowd says their way of loving makes them more even-keeled but it seems like a kind of death to me.
