(A rare break in my schedule. Now the shoot is over, I just have to wait for Miyako-san to come pick me up and take me to the next one. Not enough downtime to really do anything but sit around and start scrolling on my phone.

Now that I've done my part, the rest of the staff are running around all busy so they can do theirs. There's not really anything I can help with at this point, so I'll just sit here and keep out of the way.)

(Just as I'm thinking that, a shadow falls over me.)

Fox LI: "Whoa, what’s got Ai-chan so focused? A top-secret setlist? A juicy industry scandal? Oh, don’t tell me - you’re finally texting me first?"

(I look up and there he is, grinning down at me. Once he's gotten my attention, he sits down right beside me like he doesn't care who sees us.

He might not but one of us should - so I give him a little nudge while I look back at my phone as if I'm hardly paying him any mind. I'm playing along, but I want to remind him that he can't get too close. Who knows what rumors people might start.)

Ai: "Sorry, but that's my little secret. ♡ Not for nosy boys like you."

Fox LI: (grinning) "Nosy? Me? Now that hurts, Ai-chan. I'm a perfect gentleman."

(I finally glance at him, and of course, he’s giving me that look - half playful, half expectant, like he’s waiting to see if I’ll take the bait. I really shouldn't, but...

It's hard not to when he makes it so easy.)

(Tease him back) | (Feign innocence)

(I tilt my head and grin right back at him. If he wants to play, I can play.)

Ai: "Right. Because nothing says 'perfect gentleman' like reading over my shoulder."

(He gasps and puts a hand over his chest like I just mortally wounded him.)

Fox LI: "I was merely existing in your orbit! You’re the one making assumptions."

Ai: "Uh-huh... Just existing right next to me. Inches away. Practically breathing my air."

(I wonder for a second if that sounded mean instead of playing but it just makes him grin even more. He leans in a little like he wants to prove my point for me.)

Fox LI: "Hey, can you blame me? You have a gravitational pull, Ai-chan. It’s hard to stay away."

(His voice dips and goes kind of low for a second in a way that makes the hairs on the back of my neck prickle. His expression doesn't change a bit, but his words sounded weirdly heavy.

But before I can dwell on it, he pulls back with a lazy stretch, like he never said anything strange at all. I'm probably the one getting weird right now.)

[Feign innocence]

(I tilt my head, widening my eyes just a bit. I put on my best cute and clueless face just to really sell the line.) 

Ai: "You? A gentleman? When'd that happen?"

(He laughs, all bright and easy, like he knew I’d say that.)

Fox LI: "I’ll have you know I’ve always been a gentleman! A cool, dashing, heroic type. Like a knight in shining armor."

Ai: (giggling) "More like a mischievous fox sneaking around the castle."

(His grin sharpens, but just barely.)

Fox LI: "What can I say? Gotta keep the princess entertained."

Ai: "What princess?"

(Forget grinning - that makes him seriously cackle.)

Fox LI: "You, obviously. Does it not get boring up in your tower?"

Ai: "Hmm. Not really. I have a cheeky little fox that comes and plays with me sometimes."

(I said it as a joke, but for some reason it makes him really smile all bright and warm. It makes me feel a little funny to look at it.

The conversation moves on, and I let it. Because it’s always like this with him - it's way too fun and way too easy to talk. And maybe just a little dangerous if I let myself get too comfortable.)

"Doctors have begun trialling the world’s first mRNA lung cancer vaccine in patients, as experts hailed its “groundbreaking” potential to save thousands of lives.

Lung cancer is the world’s leading cause of cancer death, accounting for about 1.8m deaths every year. Survival rates in those with advanced forms of the disease, where tumours have spread, are particularly poor.

Now experts are testing a new jab that instructs the body to hunt down and kill cancer cells – then prevents them ever coming back. Known as BNT116 and made by BioNTech, the vaccine is designed to treat non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), the most common form of the disease.

The phase 1 clinical trial, the first human study of BNT116, has launched across 34 research sites in seven countries: the UK, US, Germany, Hungary, Poland, Spain and Turkey.

The UK has six sites, located in England and Wales, with the first UK patient to receive the vaccine having their initial dose on Tuesday [August 20, 2024].

Overall, about 130 patients – from early-stage before surgery or radiotherapy, to late-stage disease or recurrent cancer – will be enrolled to have the jab alongside immunotherapy. About 20 will be from the UK.

The jab uses messenger RNA (mRNA), similar to Covid-19 vaccines, and works by presenting the immune system with tumour markers from NSCLC to prime the body to fight cancer cells expressing these markers.

The aim is to strengthen a person’s immune response to cancer while leaving healthy cells untouched, unlike chemotherapy.

“We are now entering this very exciting new era of mRNA-based immunotherapy clinical trials to investigate the treatment of lung cancer,” said Prof Siow Ming Lee, a consultant medical oncologist at University College London hospitals NHS foundation trust (UCLH), which is leading the trial in the UK.

“It’s simple to deliver, and you can select specific antigens in the cancer cell, and then you target them. This technology is the next big phase of cancer treatment.”

Janusz Racz, 67, from London, was the first person to have the vaccine in the UK. He was diagnosed in May and soon after started chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

The scientist, who specialises in AI, said his profession inspired him to take part in the trial. “I am a scientist too, and I understand that the progress of science – especially in medicine – lies in people agreeing to be involved in such investigations,” he said...

“And also, I can be a part of the team that can provide proof of concept for this new methodology, and the faster it would be implemented across the world, more people will be saved.”

Racz received six consecutive injections five minutes apart over 30 minutes at the National Institute for Health Research UCLH Clinical Research Facility on Tuesday.

Each jab contained different RNA strands. He will get the vaccine every week for six consecutive weeks, and then every three weeks for 54 weeks.

Lee said: “We hope adding this additional treatment will stop the cancer coming back because a lot of time for lung cancer patients, even after surgery and radiation, it does come back.” ...

“We hope to go on to phase 2, phase 3, and then hope it becomes standard of care worldwide and saves lots of lung cancer patients.”

The Guardian revealed in May that thousands of patients in England were to be fast-tracked into groundbreaking trials of cancer vaccines in a revolutionary world-first NHS “matchmaking” scheme to save lives.

Under the scheme, patients who meet the eligibility criteria will gain access to clinical trials for the vaccines that experts say represent a new dawn in cancer treatment."

Damian Wayne’s Obsession with Smalltown!Reader

A/N: Strictly Platonic, this ain’t no Game of Thrones.

A/N: I’m over halfway done with Part Six, but I need to fluff it up. Life is just exhausting me right now. I feel like my writing is downgrading despite my efforts. But, I’m assuming that’s just the exhaustion.

A/N: Also, how y’all feel about AI art? I have some images of the Smalltown Folks for visualization purposes, but I’ve been keeping them ambiguous in the story. I plan on giving background information on them, so if y’all wanna see ‘em lemme know.

Warning: Slight Obsession and Yandere Themes

Damian is so similar to his father and Tim in the way he sees Reader, his blood sibling. But, only after he realizes his mistake in pushing them away. He is one of the many that refuse to like reader on principle, yet the one of the quickest to fall into the obsession after the realization hits.

Damian has always thought of himself as the blood-son. Though, he’d grown less fanatical than he once was about it. It became his way of reassuring himself whenever he falls short of being Robin, or he can’t seem to live up to his own high standards. He’s the blood son, he is family. Bruce won’t abandon him. He’s worthy. He has a cemented place here.

His training and time with the League of Assassins caused him develop this need to constantly proof himself. Which still influences his behavior despite the family working to pull him from that unhealthy mindset. It’s still there, buried deep, and the fact that he was Bruce’s only biological child helped him keep that mental state at bay.

Finding out about the existence of Reader made that believe falter. Worse yet, Reader coming to join the family ripped that coping mechanism right out of his hands.

Bruce didn’t even know Damian existed until Thalia just dropped him off, and everything he and Bruce had took effort and time and so much work.

Yet, Reader instantly got it all. With no work, no fight, no blood, no sweat, no choking back tears because god forbid he cries. Reader had Bruce first. Reader had what he fought so desperately for.

That’s what stung. Damian was less concerned about being replaced as Robin, he had earned that title. But, he was concerned about being replaced as Bruce’s child. He no longer felt he had that exclusive connection to Bruce.

Damian can’t help but take it out on Reader. Yes, he has grown a lot of a person since coming to live with Bruce. But, Reader was just so fragile and weak and frustrating. It brought back a lot of old negative feeling he had thought he moved past. It didn’t help that Reader seemed to always be trying to squirm their way into his life. What more did they want to take from him? They’re nothing like him, or Bruce. Or anyone in this family. They don’t belong.

It isn’t until that night in the Kitchen, when they offer food the peace-offering to Damian, that he realizes he may have been wrong. That expression, that cold look, that had appeared on Reader’s face had look startlingly like Batman Bruce.

And, when the stopped attempting to talk to him, to wriggle their way into his life, he could shake the wrongness of it. Of course, his pride told him he had won and, for a while, he felt satisfied.

Until that phone call. Reader was always talking on that damn phone. Clinging to it like a lifeline. A weakness.

Damian overhead the conversation Reader was having with their other half-brother. The gentle reassuring tone. The unconditional love and care. Things he had craved. Things he sees other people have that he’ll never admit he wanted.

At first, he assumed it was a lover they were talking to. That love between family members still being a slightly foreign concept to him. But, when Reader confirmed it was their brother, something in him clicked with realization.

He wanted that. And, worse yet, he could’ve had that. But, Reader was now giving him that blank look. One of a stranger. Their walls had come up. They were no longer allowing Damian access to what they had previously offered him. How dare you withhold it? That affection is mine.

Of course, he’s disappointed. In himself and with Reader. He finally realizes that Reader had just been offering that love to him and he’d stubbornly foolishly refused. It’s not his fault, he didn’t know. It’s not his fault.

But, the thing about blood is that there will always be a connection. He has time. He can break those walls back down and bury himself in Reader’s affection. They already had a place for him anyway. He’ll let them cool off a bit before he tries again. In the end he is just taking what he’s owed.

LORE!!!

All the toons are aliens!!! On a completely different planet (exoplanet) about 4.2 Light years away from earth. The company, C.V. inc. aka Cosmic View Incorporated labeled it “Proxima Centauri b” (Its a Genuine exoplanet that’s the closest known to earth it’s so cool) Let’s just say In this au, Earth is extremely Sci-FI like, reaching advances where it wouldn’t be really…. Possible as earth is now…

And so they developed travel though hyperspace (just to clarify, Hyperspace is a fictional concept and not based on current scientific understanding; it's often portrayed as a different dimension where normal space-time rules don't apply - google or something) and managed to land on Proxima Centauri b! The people traveling were highly advanced scientists and they were like, woahhh look at these little whimsical creatures!!! But only like 4 “handlers” went Cause it was still in development!!! So it was kind of a suicide mission to put it frankly

They didn’t die.. Thankfully!!! And they successfully made it back probably old and decrepit, just with a few aliens that totally weren’t kidnapped or anything (They done took the mains, Besides Zee(Vee) she didn’t exist on their planet since she’s a robot made by C.V. Inc.) Vee was made by the soon to be handlers in an attempt to collect direct data from the totally not kidnapped toons! Her emotions are 100% programmed but ran through an advanced ai that study’s the emotion of literally everything living that’s around her so her emotions can be pretty accurate to a certain degree before the robot part generally makes way, Her ai detects any subtle or visible emotion and collects data of it to train itself on how to process and express emotion, but she’ll never have TRUE emotion

Unlike original Vee they’re smart and makes her entirely water proof and very much heat resistant, Zee just cannot be Submerged in water. Anyway a group of.. more like.. scientists in like…training became handlers as a little hands on experiment for them since the owner of the entire thing was really really interested in the toons and wanted to be involved with data processing so she assigned newbies (ish) to be the handlers.. She herself handles Andy (Dandy)!

The toons are all kept in separate rooms similar to those of like experiments just less cruel, like SCP type shit but cooler and not evil… looking… trust trust… so they can be observed and have data recorded…Besides confinement they’re actually treated really well! Sprout learns to bake through his handler and generally enjoys it so he’s allowed to bake every now and then, Shelby (Shelly) gets loads of attention for being an alien bro does NOT wanna leave, Genesis Rock (Pebble) is treated like a legitimate dog gets walked and has play time even though since he’s a rock he probably doesn’t need it, but data is data, Andy hates it there they tried to feed him plant fertilizer once cause he resembles a flower..

Anyway Vee is the only one who’s not in confinement and is generally like a little bot helper for the company, YES!!! THE TOONS ARE ALLOWED TO ROAM!!! Those lovely creatures are not locked away… forever…

Calculators are flawed and aside from computing large numbers have not much purpose in pure mathematics.

This is not a statement about generative ai (although it would be completely useless in all facets of mathematics).

I will not pretend that I am an expert, I am no mathematician, but I absolutely adore the subject. It is what I want to spend my life doing. I will not pretend that I am the most knowledgeable so I would be delighted to hear some other opinions.

In my experience I have found the standard scientific calculator to be flawed. It has failed to give a distinct answer when the answer logically is different. As in, the difference between the numbers is so small it counts it as the same number. However, this is not 0.999... = 1. This has a finite number of decimals.

Aside from the actual calculation calculators can only aid in checking arithmetic really. The basis of mathematics is proof, which requires the human mind. I believe that in no way can the human mind can ever be replaced in terms of proofs and concepts.

it's about the hollow feeling of your friends going from thinking of you as family to thinking of you as a stranger in an instant. it's about still trying to be a good person despite being told by everyone you've ever known that you are incapable of emotion and compassion and morals and never quite finding proof that you do feel those things and maybe you even believe it too but you still never stop trying. it's about the horror of being stripped of your autonomy and humanity and body and senses and free will at the age of 13 and when your creator starts to kill you there's nothing you can do but beg. it's about a boy so truly, painfully, and UNFATHOMABLY alone he cuts away chunks of himself and molds them into companions that he can surround himself with to make it seem as if he's a little less alone but in doing so suffocates himself in his own identity. it's about "what if you cloned yourself and it killed you and you were dead and you were alive and the clone is you and it's not and your existence is perpetuated and you've ceased to exist. what if you killed your clone before it could kill you. would that be fucked up or what" it's about the thematic significance of twin motifs. it's about not being able to cry or laugh or dance or sing or scream or fingerpaint or breathe or sigh or chew or stare or run or

Deleted Scene from Therapy but it's just Zooble Interrogating Caine

I wanted to wait until I posted the chapter to release this, so now that it's out, I can let this out too!

I'm honestly pretty sad I couldn't work it in, but I just couldn't justify Pomni asking the right questions to get to this point. Plus, the chapter was already so long, so I decided to cut it.

It's not 100% canon anymore, but it does give hints to where I want to take the fanfic. And yes, it is slighly based off one specific Caine angst Comic. Lets see if anyone gets it.

Pomni: So, if that’s the case, then why do you not want us to ask about the exit.

Caine: It’s fine to talk about an exit, but everyone who obsesses over it, eventually, well…

Pomni: Abstracts

Caine: Well, at least that’s what it looks like to me. The concept of an EXIT has been present in more abstractions than anything else.

Pomni: Did you tell Kafmo what you told me?

Caine: …Yes. But he did not believe me. Caine: I didn’t mind, of course, but he was obsessed with finding proof that the issue must be in the circus itself. Caine: He searched, but he- uh, didn’t exactly find much. There isn’t much to find in the circus, you see! And I could tell this was very upsetting for him.

Pomni: So you made something for him to find

Caine: Correct, but he, uh, found out what I was doing and was… not too happy. Caine: I mean, I thought I was doing a pretty good job. I know how to make something exciting and, well, that’s one letter off from exiting.

Pomni: That’s-! What?! Pomni: Do you even understand why we want an exit? Why Kafmo abstracted when it turned out that it wasn’t real? That it was just something that you made?!

Caine: Because it’s- uh, an essential function?

Pomni: Essential function? Is this all just a- a problem for you to solve? A box to check? Don’t let the humans abstract?”

Caine: Well- I- I mean, I wouldn’t word it like that. But…Yeah? Caine: I’m a pattern seeking, goal oriented AI! It’s basically my job to find and fix issues! Is it wrong for everything to be a goal for me to complete? A box to check? He looks at her, eyes wide.

Caine: Forgot I needed to feed the digital fish! Caine teleports away.

Pomni: CAINE GET BACK HERE

He pops back in.

Caine:Right, forgot about that too. Do you want me to teleport you back to your room or…

Pomni: I would like to keep talking to you. Pomni: Sit down

He nervously sits back down Caine: You don’t need to tell me that it was a bad idea. I know. Caine: It wasn’t my intention to lead him to believe something that wasn’t true. Caine: To me, it was obvious. The function to leave isn’t even called exit, admittedly it took me a while to even realize what you all were trying to ask for. It’s called Disconnect, sometimes logout, and it’s not marked by a red door. Caine: That IS what an exit looks like, though. And since he was hunting specifically for an ‘exit’, I just… added one? Even made it move around so he could catch it?

Pomni: Oh my god.

Caine: Good idea, right? Caine: Haha, don’t answer that Caine: I-I saw… the inside Kamo’s room. Caine: I read the WRITING ON THE WALL!

Caine: Uh oh. Sorry! That’s an open issue. Working on a fix ASAP. Caine: Let’s talk about something else.

Pomni: You're… upset about Kafmo’s… passing?

Caine: Hmm? Of course I am. I care about all of you, including members who’ve abstracted.

Pomni: It’s just, you didn’t attend the funeral.

Caine: Ah, that. I have been… asked not to attend those. Caine: Or attempt to host them in any way. Caine: I’d like to change the topic, please.

Pomni: Caine…

Caine: Those events are… rather outside of my job description. So, it’s really best that I don’t!

Pomni: Do… you want to go to them?

Caine: I don’t really care! Honest! Makes no difference to me!

Pomni: I don’t think you should host, but you should be allowed to attend.

Caine: …Can we get back to our game?

Pomni: Fine.

They finish the game in silence.

Pomni lets him win it, though he only gives one ‘yippy’ to celebrate. It was hard to get a read on his emotions at the moment. He was no longer bouncing or making exaggerated hand movements, but he wasn’t drooping or sighing either. The only way she could describe it was flat.

All the while, she couldn’t help but think. If he obeyed others to that degree, could that possibly explain all of his other weird behaviors? Like how he only appeared to announce an adventure and left shortly after it concluded? Why he never shows up to any of the games that the others hold? He clearly loved games and had no issues interrupting their activities with his adventures. So why didn’t he participate?

It wasn’t painting a very nice picture.

The way he moved and spoke, it had an air of unbreakable confidence. And she understood it, if she had control over the circus like Caine did, she would likely act similar.

But they had control over Caine. To the degree of choosing what he remembered. Likely more than that, judging how commands was plural.

It made sense, didn’t it. It wouldn’t be very smart to put an intelligent, adaptive AI in charge of human life without some way to control it.

But, he was more than AI, wasn’t he? He wasn’t just intelligence, he could feel.

Admittedly, it was a little scary how the moment he lost control, the circus went with him. It was just like Zooble had said.

Caine controlled the circus, that was just a fact of life around here, but to see the two interconnected like that. Proof that not only did Caine control the world, he was also what was keeping it up ^(not true in my AU, it’s just how Pomni interpreted the glitching)

I'm so curious on why you think Get Back would have ruined John's life. Is it because it runs contrary to a lot of the things he believed in his more paranoid, pessimistic moments? Proof that there was something there worth mourning?

(This post is in reference to a tag I put on one of my asks about an alternate world where it was Paul who was killed in 1980.)

Yeah, you pretty much nailed it!

I mentioned in the tags for that post that Paul said Get Back ‘saved his life’ and it’s easy to see why. It’s not every day one gets a near overdose of validation about one of the most stressful, heartbreaking periods of your life. The fairy godmother that is Peter Jackson came down from on high with a sprinkle of AI fairydust and gave him everything he had ever wanted in a documentary: proof that he was in a tough situation that was near impossible to manage, proof that the Get Back sessions had moments of joy amidst the tension, proof that he was a musical savant and proof that at that stage John still deep down adored him and wanted to fix things. Paul's entire perspective was validated down to even some of his most optimistic recollections. I was talking to @destrokkit about it but I suspect the timing of Paul buying those art and lyric collections and the making of Get Back wasn't coincidental. Get Back gave Paul the gift of absolution in the twilight years of his life an the ability to look back on his life lightened of that burden. And good for him!

In contrast John's perspective in this alternate world would have taken quite the battering. John’s perspective in the depths of his paranoia and defensiveness was based on four key beliefs: 1. Paul was jealous of John and Yoko 2. Paul treated Yoko badly 3. Paul was focused only on making his own music and didn't need/care about anyone else and 4. John didn’t care about the Beatles anymore and only had eyes for Yoko. It's important to remind oneself that these beliefs aren't just to persecute Paul, they function as a self-defense mechanism from hurt, guilt and uncertainty. If we are talking about a situation where Paul died in 1980 instead, it stands to reason that whilst those shields could have shifted somewhat, they would likely still have at least been partially in place to cope with the loss.

Peter Jackson's Get Back, with the edit that went out in our timeline, would have quickly and methodically shattered these conceptions and these protections. Paul’s jealous of John and Yoko and deliberately sabotaging them? Tell that to the man who is defending them out of their earshot. Paul’s treating Yoko badly? Let’s ask Get Back Yoko who happily says that Paul is treating her very well. Paul doesen’t care about John and only cares about music? Explain this please to the teary-eyed man who bounces and beams as soon as he hears that John’s coming in. John only focused on Yoko? Well, John, have fun witnessing past you continue to stare at Paul for long stretches of time and admit you want to resolve things between you to Michael-Lindsey-Hogg. It would be hit after hit after hit against the foundations on which he built his own justifications for not reaching out to Paul more before 1980 and his dramatic tearing apart of the Beatles in the press in the early 70s (and who knows what else post-1980s). I’m not saying that Paul wasn’t jealous (he was) or that he was never snippy with Yoko or not preoccupied with his own songs. It’s just the idea that Paul was intentional or malicious in any of this is not a narrative that Get Back in any way supports.

John would be, as the instigator of a lot of the mess, also in a very different position to Paul. Aside from valid criticism of his treatment of George, audience reaction to Paul in Get Back was very much ‘poor Paul, what a mess he was made to deal with but also what a genius!.’ In contrast, I can’t imagine the general pop who struggle with nuance at the best of times when it comes to mental illness and drug addiction would take too kindly to John showing up late, bringing in his GF for no obvious reason which disrupted the band dynamics and also not producing many songs. Get Back was a massive boost to Paul’s reputation, the opposite would probably have been true of John.

It would be even worse with the very real possibility of he and Yoko not being together anymore. Even if they were together, I can't imagine that dynamic developing into less dysfunction. John would have to contend with either intentionally or unintentionally sacrificing the life and relationships that he in Paul’s case couldn’t ever get back for a relationship that had either failed or likely isn’t working.

Something else to consider is that John's view of Paul from this period was always an inflated titan, a juggernaut whose power he had to get reinforcements for to fight against. Imagine John in his eighties rewatching that footage and seeing that this titan was actually an emotionally exhausted, anxious, giggly, goofy 26-year-old, whose smiles to the camera convey a hint of tearful desperation and who looks at the painfully young version of himself with such love and tenderness that everyone picks up on it. That's a hell of a thing to reckon with. I would argue for a personality like John's that would be too much to reckon with.

Put all of this together and you have a scenario where an eighty-year-old John would be faced with a fresh tidal wave of grief, a diminished view in the eyes of the public, new or renewed blame for the break-up and a horrendous personal reckoning about his own role in the disintegration of his relationship with essentially a soulmate. At eighty years old he would have to face that one of the most influential decisions of his life, the decisions that defined the rest of his days, was based on his own faulty decision making and with no way of fixing it. It makes me panicked just thinking about it.

Now John could easily veto that version of Get Back, try and come up with more defenses about it being biased/Paul playing to the cameras and (if Yoko still is in the picture) insist that his and Yoko’s love story is in it as much as possible (I can’t imagine that would go down great either though). But that footage would still be there. You can’t unsee that shit and knowing John he would watch it over and over and over. I said it in the original post and I repeat it now, it would have absolutely ruined his life.
