The only thing I knew that would make my grandmother smile today. She and I are descendants of survivors of the Armenian Genocide. When I talk to my grandma I feel the trauma that she feels. I feel it in my body. My grandma is the epitome of love, hospitality, and good cooking. She has lived through wars in Armenia, she is strong but sad. And here we are again, facing another genocide. Her grandchildren fighting in the war. One of her daughters still in the capital. And while I feel so much pain for my people and my family and my homeland, I can’t even imagine what she feels. @poetrybymarine and I sent her these flowers to remind her that we will win. That God is on our side. That Artsakh is Armenia. To those who have never experienced or are not a part of a culture or race that has experienced such harsh discrimination and hatred, it is a pain that you cannot understand. When psychology books help you make sense of your love life.

Thanks to Levine and Heller’s Attachment Theory, I learned there are three types of attachment in relationships—secure, anxious, and avoidant. Most people have a secure attachment system. They are stable. People with anxious attachment have keen intuition. They feel deeply. They notice minute changes in their partner’s demeanor. They can’t let go until all the cells in their bodies decide, I don’t need this person anymore. Avoidants run from intimacy. They’re detached emotionally and numb to pain. No wonder. It’s been years. I’m anxious. He’s avoidant.

When I started sharing my poetry on Tumblr, I was going through a difficult time in my life. I had left a toxic work environment that caused so much stress. I lost many relationships. It was like going through a million breakups all at the same time. It hit me hard financially. I depleted my savings and went into debt. I lost too much weight. The emotional pain caused physical pain. My mind kept spinning and spinning, searching for answers. I looked up and asked God what do I do? And the only thing that came to mind was start sharing your poetry. I thought that was a pretty weird thought. But it was a reminder of who I am and what I’m meant to be doing. It was a reminder of my calling. It’s been years. This self-published book that is my literal heart in your hands. And I get to share my poetry with 18k of you. I’m thankful you’re here.
