i’m a sucker for hades/persephone fics, so when i saw Pomegranate i clicked immediately hahaha and WAS NOT DISAPPOINTED. something unique about this fic (and one of the things i loved most about it) is the lack of dialogue, which throws a spotlight on all of beth and rio’s internal baggage and how they’re wrestling with their growing feelings for each other. i’m also obsessed with this writing style and how lyrical it is?? i went back and read full paragraphs multiple times and as a result this fic took me 1000x longer to read because i didn’t want it to end!

ANNIE/NANCY FIC I REPEAT ANNIE/NANCY FIC. june after dark was everything i was hoping it would be and more ughhhhh. both women are perfectly in-character (annie’s voice in particular was so sharp and witty and just so her i’m in complete awe). this fic highlights their natural chemistry in a way that’s both beautiful and heartbreaking as we see it through the lens of annie giving us some introspection about what it means to be a mother. the fic also briefly touches on beth’s postpartum as well as beth and annie’s mom and the parallels between the two, and the lingering impact that both had on annie. just a brilliant fic all around, i can’t wait to dive into this author’s ao3 and read the rest of their work!!

Favorite Book: THERE CANNOT BE ONLY ONE. Shanghai Baby by Wei Hui and Sushi for Beginners by Marian Keyes (THIS IS THE BOOK I BORROWED THE ZODIAC JOKE FROM) are my fave stand-alone books. In terms of series, I adore Harry Potter (I can kill at HP trivia) and His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman (very excited about the upcoming HBO show). But another notable author I need to mention is Karen Marie Moning, my favourite romance/smut author and my biggest influence as a writer.

Inspiration for my muse(s):  Ok this question is confusing but everyone else answered it as what inspires them so ‘tis how I’ll answer it too! Basically... characters. I’m inspired by the characters I love. That’s why I specifically love writing fanfic - the character already exists, and I love bringing more detail and colour and psychological analysis to their actions and coming up with what they’d do next in any given situation. 

Dream Job: LONG ANSWER INCOMING. [sigh] So this is going to sound skeptical/sad, but I really don’t mean it this way: I can’t get a job doing the one exact thing I love the most (i.e. literally writing fanfic, not even writing original fiction), so I don’t really have a dream job per se. Jobs I really think I’d enjoy are couple and sex therapist or fiction editor, but I’m not looking to change careers anytime soon. I work as a speech-language pathologist now and it’s a perfectly fine job, so  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Meaning Behind the URL: Ok, so my mom is from Jamaica, and “Pickapeppa” is a savoury Jamaican sauce. And Pikachu is adorable. So I dropped the C in the sauce name and pikapeppa was born. My only regret is that I didn’t use the same name on my AO3 (which is queenofkadara), but when I started writing I was painfully obsessed with Reyes Vidal from Mass Effect Andromeda, so oh well. GUESS I’LL JUST DIE FROM LACK OF CONSISTENCY LOL.

I really wish we could move...

I'm sorry that I vent here a lot. But sometimes writing in my physical journal for venting purposes hurts my hand. And venting to someone IRL isn't an option because the only person I can do this to is my husband, and some of the things I vent could stress him out because he's very stressed out by the source I'm stressed about (aka my damn dad). So I'm going to vent here about the stresses and why we actually can't move.

My parents are Fearless Leader Cheetoh supporters with not a single word of criticism towards the fucker despite them claiming they don't blindly follow him. But my parents are 2 individual people. My mom isn't quite as bad, but can be hurtful.

For example, my mom will only half-listen to me about the things I talk about as she's so absorbed into her FB app on her tablet or watching the same 2 or 3 western shows over and over again, only to conveniently forget my views and thoughts on particular subjects when she engages in conversation with me on certain topics. I think it's because she doesn't care when it comes to views, but other topics, such as what I've like to go back to school for, she remembers to some extent. I don't know if it really is because she doesn't care, or brushes it off as some "liberal" garbage that she tunes out despite the fact that I've made it very clear to her what a liberal actually is and that I'm an anarchist and what anarchist views generally stand for. It also hurts that whenever dad is pulling some problematic bullshit or says some problematic bullshit, she thinks it's nothing serious and doesn't really jump in half the time to tell him off ('cuz she's the only person he'll listen to in this house).

Dad, on the other hand, is the kind of guy who you think, if you visit this house enough, may have narcissism. And here's the fucked up part: if he does, he will use that as an excuse to be an asshole. He's an anti-masker; refuses to wear a mask. He gets into people's faces just to talk to them when in public. He constantly, constantly, constantly insults people in a "light-hearted" manner for wearing a mask (mom is a bit of an anti-masker, wears one when required, but doesn't pull this shit my dad does, so she gets points there since we have the bar so low you have to lift dirt in the basement to find it).

My dad is the main problem here, though. Mom doesn't really do this, but dad? Dad's careless. I have thoroughly cleaned the kitchen of clutter and old shit 2 or 3 times since I moved in here, and every time I do this, the same problems re-appear: food he buys gets buried on cluttered countertops, a pomegranate (ALWAYS A FUCKING POMEGRANATE) shrivels up behind things because he goes, "I thought I'd want it," when I've never had any and never expressed desire to try it (that's another thing: he makes assumptions, acts on them, then pikachu-faces when his assumptions are wrong), the countertops have crumbs and splatters made by him, though he gets mad if we don't clean up our own messes.

There are leftovers where, though I have nothing against saving leftovers for later, take up room in the fridge in 2 ways that shouldn't even happen. One is that it is uncommon for my parents to actually eat the fucking leftovers, so about a quarter to two-thirds of the leftovers go bad in the fridge. The second is that these leftovers? They're stored in what they were prepared in and barely take up about a third of the pan. So that ham he makes in a Dutch-oven? Takes up about a quarter to a third of space in that pan after it was feasted upon, fresh. It stays in that large-ass pan and it goes into the fridge. That takes up a lot of space in the fridge when you have someone who can't use dairy milk, who relies on orange juice and an alternative milk for nutritional sustenance instead of dairy and whatever else your stereotypical American family consumed, as well as pancake batter that I save (AND USE), etc.

I know you can't really control the portion size of a cut of ham, but you can control your portion size of creamed peas. For example, I like saving glass jars, and because the Progresso chicken noodle soup is such a large can, I only can eat half, I store the other half in the glass jar for the next day (and normally I eat it unless it gets buried in the back of the fridge where if I don't see it, I forget it exists). My parents rarely use the fucking tupperware they have unless they have prepared something they plan to take to a gathering!

The excuse tends to be "less dishes to clean" but for some goddamn reason, my dad makes more than they actually intend to eat or can eat. So a lot of it gets wasted anyways.

Then there's the fact that my dad will buy things and not eat them. The freezer is jam-packed full of stuff. Yes, a nice chunk of it is mine and my husband's, but we actually eat that stuff. There's ice cream and frozen dinners that sat there since last year! Oh, but when I bitched dad out about it today? "That's not true, what about that garlic chicken you guys didn't finish because you decided you didn't like it?" Hoo boy! Got me there! ONE measly item compared to an estimated seven different TYPES of items that's been there for who knows how long!

The latest bullshit trend in the kitchen is my dad buying produce, leaving them in those plastic bags, and about a third of them liquify!

I have also reorganized the kitchen (I think last year) based on logic. I had all of the food stored on the side of the kitchen opposite of the stove, and put the toaster over there (INSTEAD OF BY THE SINK). This includes cupboards, too. The only thing I never got around to were the drawers because my health went to hell for a while. But the logic was this: if a fire occurred thanks to the stove/oven, since someone is almost always home, there's hope that our food won't be lost. This way, while insurance probably pulls some bullshit to where we don't see money for a long time as a result, we still have food to eat! And all of the stuff like COOKING OILS don't make the fire worse!

There's also another logic involved here, but my dad loves to fight me on this until very recently: pests.

But it takes him forever to get ant traps, and he doesn't bother trying to DIY fix where the ants might be coming in (like he claimed he'd do). However, on the other side of the kitchen? Mice. There's mouse shit in the oven drawer that has never been cleaned out, my husband has seen a mouse on the stove in the middle of the night, there has been 2 instances of a mouse turd on the stove, and I've constantly seen mouse shit on that side of the counter. My dad pikachu-faced HARD when I told him, "See? You shouldn't leave food on the counter! There's mouse shit by the toaster!" (A toaster that is never cleaned by my parents, btw.)

Of course, there's fresh produce on that side of the counter. Why? Not enough room on the other counter. Why? Gotta have room for the goddamn paper plates and plastic disposable cups.

Even when not in dry weather, where I do the majority of the dishes, my dad makes it so he uses all disposables except silverware. So he "doesn't have to do any dishes" despite it being me that did them most of the time.

If I keep pressing on, he will bellow out, "It's MY HOUSE!"

On top of all of this, he constantly butt into conversations that doesn't concern him. Every thought he has? He feels like he has to say it. Because "first amendment rights" though I'm told to stop "using the lord's name in vain" despite being a Pagan. He will give advice where it's not asked for (and often wrong, largely due to being outdated or lost touch with reality), and if you're not talking to him? He interrupts with an almost loud "huh?" or "ha?" because he's a self-centered dickhead.

That's just the kitchen-related shit. We don't have a ventilation fan in the bathroom anymore because ever since we moved he, he never cleaned it, so for about three or four years, we've dealt with mold in the bathroom (he also claimed he likes having the hair dryer on by the bathroom sink while he showed because he says it will "evaporate any and all moisture" because the fucker doesn't know how the water cycle fucking works, then wonders why he can't breathe in the bathroom or why it's so humid in there; he can never accept the fact that he's wrong). So the fan broke and it was taken out.... And never replaced. This is due to excuses depending on the mood he's in. One is lack of money. Another is he needs help. Lately it's been apparently my husband's responsibility to buy the correct fan (dad has made the mistake of getting the wrong sized one TWICE) and install it himself, despite my husband having no idea how to do that. My dad lately also said the bathroom is disgusting and he "keeps telling him that he needs to scrub that bathroom and paint it" (with an anti-mold paint, I can't remember what it's called... wet-and-forget?)

There's a long, long list of other things I could write a goddamn book about regarding this insufferable bastard, but I think you kinda get the idea. He also likes to use the "I'm disabled" excuse when... He... still had to do it when my husband and I weren't living here and... would... still.. have to do it... when we're gone? Like, I'm disabled, too, motherfucker, but I still try to get shit done to the best of my abilities. (He tells me his ideal life is living in an apartment where he hardly has to move from a comfy chair and have a servant; he decided to don the personality of a rich person while still being horrendously impoverished; he wants to be the Fearless Cheetoh, that's why he idolizes him so much.)

Being in the same room as him is a stress by itself even if he hasn't said or done anything. So whenever he leaves the house? Suddenly my husband and I feel a lot less stressed. We even go out to the kitchen and take our time making something to eat or even cleaning out there!

*sigh*

I have a limited CD collection (due to having to sell the majority of what I had years ago in order to be able to eat while in college), so I don't wanna hear from my dad about how I listen to the same shit over and over again when I clean (I take my boombox to wherever I wanna clean because music helps). So I'm hoping to purchase a few CDs before spring because there's going to be some heavy-duty cleaning of not just several rooms in this house (my parents are pseudo-hoarders), but also both garages (context: we live on a farm). I need music. So, fingers crossed I can get my hands on some albums I want.

I just had to fight the urge about the state that the garages are in and how my dad will spend money constantly to replace tools he loses because he just throws them in piles... *deep breath*

Now, onto why we can't move: we're poor.

I graduated high school in 2007. I got tricked into attending a for-profit college. Mine and my husband's credit scores are shit. We can't find jobs (or rather, he can't, I wanna go to school for ecology) that pay well enough for basic bills, let alone house payments and property taxes. There's nothing that is realistically affordable for my husband and I to call our own home. We're stuck here, and we have to be careful how far we tread into any form of legitimate, non-hostile criticism of my parents, lest my dad threatens to kick us out. Granted, we don't pay rent, but despite everything I've done, such as cleaning and TRYING to fucking start gardening so we don't have to spend so much on food, I'm called lazy by my dad when honestly, I'm doing my best as well as trying to make sure I don't find reasons to not want to exist anymore.

I wanna move back to Pittsburgh because there's things you could do. We had access to transportation that isn't just a car (public transportation; we wanna ride bikes, too), access to all sorts of things. Here? It's the middle of nowhere; rural Ohio where you have to spend a lot of gas money to drive to places, and even more money to keep repairing a car that can't handle these back roads. There is NOTHING TO DO HERE in an area where the only internet provider who will service you won't upgrade their fucking infrastructure because they don't wanna have to spend money, so the internet connection is shit, so zoom or anything like that is unrealistic for us. Cellphone reception is also shit, especially if it has no internet connection. And the few times I want to talk to someone? Can't have that here. Everyone's too busy in this area trying to make ends meet. I also suck at maintaining friendships. My parents either half-listen or don't listen at all while they sit glued to their devices while simultaneously boasting and bragging about how they made it without the internet years ago, and yet I got yelled at A LOT for "being on that damned computer so much" when I was in high school. (THERE'S NOTHING TO DO AROUND HERE; HOW ELSE DID YOU EXPECT ME TO SPEND MY TIME?)

I don't know how else to end this. I just needed to vent. I'm sick of not being able to do anything in the kitchen because of clutter and wasted food, not being able to store food properly because everything gets misused or buried, then I get bitched at for my things taking up space buried in the back because I thought I'd already eaten/drank it but they don't see their clutter. I'm sick of a moldy bathroom with well water we can't afford to properly filter because my parents got suckered into buying this farm, so now we gotta deal with mineral and iron build-ups and iron stains on things like sinks, fixtures, and anything cloth we wash in this water. I'm sick of not being able to garden on a 15 acre farm (less then that, actually, since the horses my mom does the bare minimum caring for takes up most of that space) because I'm promised BY MY PARENTS they would financially help me get started, then when it comes time for growing season is, "How come you don't get your husband to help?" BECAUSE YOU TOLD ME YOU'D TAKE CARE OF IT SO I NEVER HAD MY HUSBAND PUT SOME MONEY ASIDE TO SAVE UP FOR ANYTHING. And more importantly, I'm sick of living in my room, or some tiny space (referencing the apartment we had for about 4 years) and it not feeling adequate to truly call it home. (Pittsburgh was the closest thing my husband and I called home btw)

But we're stuck here. Because capitalism. Fuck capitalism. Fuck it all.

So despite losing my Pikachu mask yesterday, I'm actually really happy with how the day turned out. I got up to the strip along one of the main roads on the ritzy side of town on the bus and then I was off doing my own thing. It was a fun day and I walked a lot compared to my usual distance. It was really nice out, though my arms are pretty red. First sunburn of the year. I know I shouldn't be proud of that, but it's a reminder of how long I actually spent out of the house getting fresh air. And I need that fresh air so, so much.

I actually went up with a few things I knew I had to do, but I did some extra stuff, as well, since I didn't have the entire day totally planned out. I needed a new bong, because my first one fell and broke. It was just a cheap one to start with, anyway. I also needed a new bottle of weed, because John used up the other stuff trying to cope with Cymbalta withdrawal and our facial pain. And since the Delta 8 is completely legal, I can simply go in and buy a bottle. The guy in the store was really helpful and recommended Moon Rock for me. I tried it after getting home and it was nice. As an aside, it reminded me of sweet bell peppers, and now I'm craving it. I'm just going to have to buy one on the way back from the bank. It's also quickly turning into a sentimental thing, similar to the Girl Scout Cookies (we were once a Girl Scout) but different.

So after that, where I was jittery as all hell because it was literally my first time buying my own weed, I stopped in the local video game shop to check stuff out. I confirmed they have refurbished PS2s, so I'll be setting aside money next month to get one so I can play my PlayStation games. I also left with a copy of the first Spectrobes game. I got the second for Christmas way back in high school, but never had the first. Funnily enough, a friend from school actually did have the first one.

And then because of a conversation Tuesday night, Galaco started craving frozen yogurt. So we stopped at a the yogurt shop. Strawberry with granola and mango and orange poppables candy? Yeah, that was a good frozen yogurt. And Galaco really enjoyed it.

And then we walked out the the plaza to the local bargaining outlet to look for bedframes. Our mattress is still on the floor, which is generally ok with us, but we should really get a bedframe and box spring. We couldn't get one, of course. One, they were out; two, I can't lug one home on the bus; and three, I didn't actually have the money on my at the time. However, I did find pomegranate preserves there, and I'm excited to try it on toast sometime very soon.

And of course combined with the pomegranate I got earlier at the grocery store downtown, I started thinking. I have seeds for some herbs that I'm going to grow already, since fresh is always preferable. I've decided to raise a pomegranate tree. I can't have a pet at this point, but caring for something outside of myself is really important to my mental health. And I want something that isn't there solely for how pretty it is, though I do still want flowers outside my bedroom windows to make this place even more of a home. Something native to the region, preferably.

Dad doesn't mind me getting into raising plants, since he's big into getting the patch garden started in the back yard. And of course our land lady, my personal friend helping us keep a roof over our heads, is probably going to be happy to hear I'm going to do this. It's really a way of dealing with my fears of commitment, because I'm always terrified that I'll inevitably fail at any commitments I try to make. But I'm going to work on my attitude towards that by talking and acting as if these things are already solid.

And then I went next door to another local shop that sells all kinds of things. They usually have a lot of incense and cool things like fancy glass pipes, and fancy metal or silicone ones. Plus more bongs. I confirmed that they also sell the Delta 8, and even have it in candy form. I'm going to set money aside for the blue raspberry gummies they have, because I'm obsessed with blue raspberry.

And then we missed the bus later on, on its way up to the college town farther up the mountains, because we didn't realize going into the plaza itself at that time was a request stop. So I ended up trekking it to the plaza closer to the mall where I did catch the bus. That was certainly an adventure. I was completely done in by the time I got home. I calculated how much I walked, and I ended up walking about two and a half miles by the end of the day.

Though to my surprise, I'm not actually as sore as I thought I'd be. So that means my physical condition is already improving. I'm really proud of that, and it's going to continue. I'm actually feeling up to going out a little bit again already, even though I still feel it in my arms, legs, and back. I'm feeling good. I'm motivated again. My various medical providers are going to be happy to hear that. I can't wait to tell my therapist in particular. I can't stress enough how much moving into a better place has helped me. Others who know me say I look better than before. Even just acquaintances have noticed, like the guy who takes care of the ginger tomcat up the hill where I used to live.

Also, there's something from today I really must add. Our PCP has the Moderna Covid vaccine in and called Dad to see if he wanted to get it. He put the phone on speaker, so we were both able to get scheduled because of course we want it. We need that. And as much as Galaco hates needles, she's actually thrilled to bits and now being generally impatient like the kid she is. Honestly, we're all pretty excited to finally get vaccinated. So on Wednesday, we get to go in and get it.

And that pretty much wraps up yesterday, plus so far today. I'm really really just recording this for myself. I want a something that I can look back at to inspire myself later, especially when I'm feeling dow. It's a reminder that I can do the things I want to do, even if I have bad days.

5 things I’ve always wanted to do: write a novel (the farthest I’ve gotten has been like 8 chapters in and then stopped), experience zero-g (but like, that costs $5,000 to go to so this is pretty much one of those, I’ll never expect to do it but if I do it’ll be amazing sort of things), fill a passport, ride in a hot air balloon, and one day I’ll own a house that I’ll make a home.
