*had to sit in a room all morning and just twiddle my thumbs so got some writing down. So here we are chapter 5 again im a baby writer none of this is profed i just write and post. Everyone be kind. In my fic neytiri and jake actually took care of spider, like reader asked them to and the colored text is them speaking in Navi.

My mind is slightly eased after speaking with Norm. While he didn’t promise anything he also didn’t flat-out refuse us, even so, Miles has continued to fine-tune his escape plan for us just in case Jake refuses to help. Right now however the biggest hurdle in his plan is Spider. Making sure we can fully take care of him, which evolves into a mask that couldn't be tracked and a reliable source of oxygen for him. I was worried about the boy as well but after looking into some of the tech the new RDA developers have been messing with I found a new type of mask for Spider. It was more portable and no longer required to be charged; it would create its own oxygen.

While we all continue to follow any leads on finding Jake none of us are truly hunting him just doing the bare minimum to look as though we are all still loyal. It's not till a week later that something big happens. Ardmore has one of her goons call on us to meet Ardmore on the bridge. 

Miles pov 

I walk into the bride wainfleet and z-dog behind me. Y/n wanted to come but i wanted to keep her as far away from the general as i possibly could.

You called for us general”

“Ah yes colonel follow me, she leads us over to the hollow map now showing a large area of water instead of its usual mountain and tree landscapes. 

 We believe we’ve found a lead on Sully's whereabouts. 

“Really” 

“Yes, Mathewson pulled up the data” The map moves going back to the tree line just outside the rdas search circle. A red dot is now displayed.d

“We’ve been sweeping for old equipment from the war making sure everything was together and accounted for. In doing so we came across an active signal from an old fighter helios, it entered  the edge of the tree line here and went west, until disappearing somewhere in this small grouping of islands.”

“Colonel your team will leave at the end of the week, to start searching every one of these islands until Jake Sully is found. “

“Of course General we'd be more than happy to.” 

“Good answer: you'll be meeting up with a vessel we have out there already and they will assist you in your mission. Now go get me some results colonel “

Y/n pov

So what did the wicked witch want? “I ask Miles as Lyle and z come back from their meeting with Ardmore. 

There's been a signal from some old pre-war equipment, it's flown out towards the ocean region, Ardmore wants us to follow up on it. She has reason to believe it sully or at least some of his followers. 

“Well if it is Jake what are we going to do?

“I don't know darlin, try and contact Norm again to see what's taking them so damn long, and if they don't answer well have to go with plan b. 

“Ok, I'll go out today, and try again. 

Good take Mansks and Prager with you, but y’all be quick about it,  I don't need this woman trying to find something to bitch at us about. Especially when she holds your life in her hands, ok love.

“I will love, take care of Spider for me.”

“Yeah, no need to worry y/n hell be with his favorite uncle.”

“Who says you're the favorite.” I hear Lopez call out as he approaches us.

We successfully made it to the clearing, ringing the com link nonstop, when it was finally answered I could hear an odd sound in the background. It almost sounded like water or something, just reconfirming that whoever it was that answered was probably near the ocean.

“She wants to send us after you, but we're stuck if we don't do what they want they will get rid of us. We need to work together and come up with some way to delay Ardmore and get us out, so we can help you. “

“Y/n it's not going to be that easy.”

Well then tell me what we need to do to make it easy Jake cause the Rda isn't going to go away again without fully crippling what they’ve got going here. And no offenses but we’ve all been gone for 15 years the RDA has stepped its game up. You’ll need our help”

Jake is silent again before letting out a long sigh. “I'll have to talk to some people, Dove. They’ll be the ones that will have to decide if we can do anything”

I'll tell them not to put up a fight that you aren't there to hurt them but you have to act until we are ready to strike. You just can’t hurt anyone “

“Good till then keep in touch with me and I'll try and come up with a plan to get y'all off the radar. If you are her only hunting party then getting rid of you will delay them till we can strike” 

“Good point.” Mansks says next to me “If we somehow all died or got lost the RDA wouldn’t be able to send someone after us right away without causing more losses.”

“Yeah that would definitely upset the people over the general but it would also piss her off.” Prager chimes in

‘But y/n.”

“Yeah.”

“Be honest with me, I know you will.”

“No Jake, none of us are the same. They’ve all changed and as the days move they grow more and more used to Pandora and want to be a part of it. We’re different Jake, they could be different just like you where they’re on that cusp of not being human anymore but not fully being Navi. We just need help, so I ask you again as your friend. I know in my heart that everyone’s changed and I know Jake would also help us, it's everyone else I worry about. While I don't want my family torn apart and used, I also don't want the people and the clans of Pandora to be hurt in the process either.

Jakes pov

“I understand that and I will not endanger these people I refuse. We will set them up somewhere outside of the village until they are accepted and then we can go from there. Does that sound alright?

We land in a forested jungle esc area. A small stream and pond stints on a cliff face if you follow the stream and go further out into the trees you’ll come across the ocean. It’s truly beautiful though. Spider and I were so excited honestly to see the ocean and its beautiful turquoise blue water.

I wish there was a beach to plan on and not just tree roots but hopefully, spiders will have the opportunity to have an actual beach day sometime in the future, all the ikrans are chirping with glee as we let them rest and drink some water. Everyone else though, was very rigged, ears pinned back and twitching at every sound. I try and put a brave face on but my insides are twisted. I'm afraid. If this doesn’t go well then we’ll be essentially on the run from the RDA and will be all by ourselves. I mean I have faith in my team but we can’t do it all alone and… I was brought out of my thoughts by miles pulling me into his chest and whispering to breathe in my ear. 

“Ready darlin,”

“As much as I can be what about you love”

“It’s just Sully I can handle him” 

“Miles, you and I both know it's bigger than that.”  He's silent 

“Miles just promise to try, we all need to reconcile and move forward before none of us can”

“Your right darlin your right” 

“COLONEL”. Lyle yells out getting all of our attention. He's looking at the sky. Seeing a group of other ikran flying towards us. Everyone gets in formation, grouping into a somewhat defensive stance but still trying to look open since they all know what's at stake here. 

Six people arrive and leave. Three of them are darker blue like us, but two others look different from the Na'vi I’m used to. They have a lighter, more turquoise blue color, larger arms, and longer tails. Additionally, they wear shells and netting instead of the braided garments typical of the forest people. As they get closer the dark blue male leads, his dreaded hair hangs behind him as he walks with purpose towards us. 

Jake?” I ask the male as he comes to a stop a quarter of the way from us.

“Jake, Neytiri and I hear Spider shout out as he goes bounding over to the group.

“Spider!” I hear Miles call out to the teen who stops before completely running over to them 

“It’s ok,” Jake calls out. Gesturing a hello to Spider. 

The atmosphere is tense on all sides so I decide to try and break it. 

It’s good to see you again Jake and you Neytir.”

Jake smiles and Neytiri finally comes out from behind him, no longer able to contain her happiness at seeing the person she used to know in a body gifted by eywa. I meet her halfway between the two groups as she holds me at arm's length, looking me up and down. Before gently smiling. 

“I see you, my friend.

“I see you Neytiri”

She smiles and hugs me, I feel miles, and the other scoot up slightly 

miles in spider coming up behind me as Jake and Norm follow behind  Neytiri 

Sir, can I cut in” Jake asks coming to stand beside her before also, quickly, hugging me and looking me over as well 

“Wow dove, it's you, I honestly say I never thought I’d see you again, any of you,” Jake says stepping back towards me as he eyes the man behind me.

“Quartich”

“Sully, mrs. Sully”.

Tiri softly hisses at Miles anger evident on her face, but she says nothing, she's not the only one though, i can tell Miles is nervous even though he's trying really hard not to show it.

“Care to get this thing started Sully we can’t be here all day.

“Right grab Wainfleet and come meet your new allies.”

Miles Lyle and I walk with Jake and Neytiri over to the unknown Navi.

“Jake Sully has told us of your lives, and I refuse to bring trouble to my clan without just cause. We were prepared to refuse Jake Sully until eywa sent us a sign.”

“She sent me a vision”, Ronal starts “She told me to help you, and I will not refuse Eywas's word no matter how much I disagree with so you sky demons will be helped”

“Um thank you”. I say nudging Miles beside me to say something.

Understandable, as ive said once we get you away from the sky people we will start teaching you the ways of water till you become a part of the clan.

For the next hour, we outlined a plan for our team. They would follow our orders and begin searching the islands and villages. Once we reached the designated village, the ocean clans would unite to apprehend the sky people who had been scouring the ocean nearby. They would capture all of us and pretend to kill or capture us in an attempt to rescue the toruk makto's adopted human son. Hopefully, there would be no casualties, but the human soldiers that Ardmore sends to monitor us will likely put up a fight. We hope to convince them to stay on the boat. 

It was surprising how well all the boys got along, working together to develop this plan to ensure everyone's safety. It brought a smile to my face until I noticed Neytiri side-eyeing Miles; she was as stiff as a board. I decided to try and talk to her.

“Hey tiri can I speak with you for a moment?”.. she agrees and walks over with me to sit on some tree roots nearby

“How are you Tiri?”

“What do you mean?” 

“I mean your stiff as a board and I know you're not exactly thrilled with Miles”

“That de… Quartich has done much to me and my family, and I hold much anger toward him, but eywa has spoken and I am trying to listen to her.

“For everything for not doing more to stop the attack on Hometree, even though I didn’t know they were doing that. Or for stopping Miles and the other from joining the war for everything the humans have done to you I apologize.”

Tiri hugs me, both of us having tears in our eyes.

“No tiri neither of us blames you we don't even really remember it. What matters now is that we're here together in these bodies and can do better this time”

“You are correct. I wanted him to be able to experience the things around him so again from mother to mother I thank you neytiri.” 

“Of course y/n of course” 

Miles pov 

Ok that should be good for now, it’s getting late and your team will need to start heading back to Quartich. Jake says quickly motioning to how dark the sky has started to get the sun beginning to set in the sky.

“Agreed, ok y’all pack it up. I yell to my team all swiftly moving into action 

“Sully I would like a word, privately,”Ii say looking over at Spellman as he quickly lifts his head from talking to Tonowari as soon as he hears me speak.

“Fine, I have some stuff to say to you as well.”

Jakes pov 

Quartich and I walk over away from everyone else 

“Ok sully get this out of the way yeah”. Quartich says bracing himself like i'm going to slug him in the face. Part of me wants to but the more mature part has realized I had wronged this man as much as he had me. 

“I'm sorry colonel”

“What!”

“Yeah, I'm sorry……. I've had a lot to think about colonel, and I've realized, that you guys took me in when I got to Pandora, despite my disability you all treated me like a normal soldier. Made me part of your team despite me being assigned to Grace, didn’t let me feel like I was just some experiment, and what did I do, I betrayed you all. I immediately made you the enemy when in reality it was the RDA that where the enemy we were all just caught in their net, just like now. Which is why I apologize for that but you have to see now why I did what I did don't you?

I do sully I do, he turns to look at Spider and y/n quickly "I forgot when I was human that I made a promise to myself that they would come before everything else. I wanted a good home for my family and thought the only way to get it was to follow orders. 

“I understand that, which is why I propose a new start” 

“What do you have in mind?” 

“I say we let the past stay in the past. No longer opposite sides of the board but comrades in arms once again. That we help one another to realize our dreams for our families. What do you say?”

I ask holding my hand out to shake and sign the pact. Quartich looks at my hand for a momentbeforer grasping my arm and shaking it a nod in my direction. 

“Agreed sully, let's take these bastards out, but first let's get us away from them deal 

“Yes sir.”’ I say a slight grin in my tone. 

“Dad, we're ready!” I hear spider yell out, quickly turning Quaritch's head. We both look over to the boy with a goofy smile on his face.

“Of course, colonel, I promised y/n I would..

Russia’s relentless barrage of missile and drone attacks on Ukraine in recent weeks signals a horrific escalation of its multi-front war. Russian President Vladimir Putin first wanted to take over the country. Now he wants to shut it down.

Failing on the battlefield, Putin is stepping up his assaults on Ukrainian society. In so doing, he is changing the very nature of the war. Russian forces are committing genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. They have killed thousands of civilians. They are trafficking in children. They are bombing hospitals, schools, homes, and factories. They have targeted subways, railways, and highways. Their hackers sow disinformation and have infiltrated government and financial institutions. Moscow is doing what it can to destroy, degrade, or disrupt the flows of energy, food, water, medicines, goods, services, data, and information that sustain Ukrainian life. These attacks are evidence that the Kremlin is now implementing a recently developed approach known as Strategic Operation for the Destruction of Critically Important Targets, or SODCIT. This concept targets the critical societal functions of a society, rather than just its military forces.

The Ukrainian people have won global admiration by refusing to back down in the face of Russia’s onslaughts. They are determined to persevere in what their president, Volodymyr Zelensky, calls “a war of strength and resilience.” Ukrainian forces have won back over half of their territory lost to Russia since February.

Nonetheless, challenges off the battlefield threaten to erase Ukraine’s frontline gains. The World Bank projects Ukraine’s economy to shrink by 35% this year. Inflation looks to spike to 30%. Ukraine’s health system is “facing its darkest days in the war so far,” according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Nearly half of Ukraine’s energy grid was knocked out by Russia’s recent strikes. Practically all big thermal and hydroelectric power plants have been damaged. People across the country are suffering from serious degradation of essential services, including access to clean water, sanitation, fuel, and electricity. Regions are implementing rolling blackouts.

The dangers of a humanitarian disaster are very real. Six million Ukrainians are now displaced within their country, and an additional 7.8 million people have sought refuge elsewhere. This is already the largest displacement of people in Europe since World War II, and the WHO warns that three million more Ukrainians are likely to leave their homes this winter.

Don’t ask, “when will this end?” Ask “how will this continue?”

As the war drags on, weary pundits and politicians are fond of asking, “When will this end?” We will do better by asking ourselves, “How will this continue?” because it is likely to get worse before it gets better. Prospects for a near-term settlement, or even a patchy cease-fire, are dim. Putin is doubling down, not giving up.

Instead of pondering abstract endgames, Kyiv and its partners must focus on what they can do specifically, now, to prevent the conflict from spreading. One important step is to prioritize the type of military assistance that will address Putin’s revised tactics. Tanks, artillery, armored personnel carriers, and anti-tank rocket launchers remain important to the war on the ground. They are Ukraine’s sword. Now Ukraine needs a shield: an integrated air and missile defense system that can thwart Putin’s aerial assaults.

The United States and its allies are moving in this direction. They have provided advanced surface-to-air missile systems, shoulder-fired man-portable air defense systems, and self-propelled anti-aircraft gun systems. In addition to providing more of the same, they need to give the Ukrainians even more capable systems.

A second urgent need is to move from on-the-fly assistance to more structured and sustainable long-term support. Steps are being taken on the military front. The Pentagon is standing up a new joint forces command in Germany, called the Security Assistance Group Ukraine, to train and equip Ukraine’s military for what is likely to be a long haul. The European Union’s Military Assistance Mission will also train Ukrainian forces, and its European Peace Facility (EPF) continues to finance arms deliveries. However, those transfers have already exhausted nearly all of the EPF’s €5.7 billion budget, originally intended to last until 2027. Either a dedicated Ukraine support fund needs to be established, or the fund needs to be replenished. EU leaders are discussing a plan to add another €5.5 billion to the kitty.

Strengthening Ukraine’s resilience

Military efforts are only part of what is needed to help Ukraine win a war that is now as much about strengthening resilience as about defending territory. Non-military support has been a nine-month scramble to address urgent humanitarian needs, patch damaged infrastructure, and support ongoing Ukrainian government operations and emergency services. Yet Western officials admit that they failed to anticipate Moscow’s more expansive tactics, even though Zelensky has warned that “the financial frontline for Ukraine is now as important as the frontline on the battlefield.”

The Biden administration has pledged an additional $53 million-worth of equipment to help Ukraine repair its energy infrastructure, and is pressing others to give similar aid. But it is now clear that ad hockery will no longer do; a more sustainable effort is required. Washington and other allies are looking to set up a group to coordinate on energy infrastructure, much like the U.S.-initiated Ukraine Defense Contact Group, which coordinates arms shipments among dozens of countries. While this is an important step, consideration might be given to embedding coordination on energy within a broader resilience coordination support mechanism, since disruption is not limited to the energy sector alone.

Progress could be made at a donor conference slated to be held December 13 in Paris to bolster Ukraine’s civilian resilience. Discussions are also under way to create a financial coordination platform, perhaps under the auspices of the G-7, co-chaired by the United States, the EU, and Ukraine, and including international financial institutions, to coordinate financial assistance to Ukraine and prioritize immediate and long-term recovery needs. Robust anti-corruption efforts will be essential, given Ukraine’s dismal record on this front.

Stopping the conflict’s spread also means stemming the waves of disruption that Moscow is unleashing beyond Ukraine. NATO has so far shielded its troops from Putin’s war. The same cannot be said for NATO’s societies. Putin has been clear that he is intent on exacerbating social and economic problems that will “split” European societies, “inevitably lead to populism … and a change of the elites in the short term,” and weaken European support for Ukraine. Russian gas and oil flows have slowed to a trickle, and Moscow has possibly sabotaged Nord Stream gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea. European societies face more than price spikes, cold apartments, shuttered factories, and job losses: An analysis by The Economist concluded that the energy crunch is likely to cause over 100,000 deaths in Europe this year – more than the number of Ukrainian soldiers who have died so far.

Putin has more arrows in his quiver. Moscow is generating surges of Ukrainian refugees that threaten to swamp Ukraine and its neighbors. It is disrupting critical flows of food and other commodities to countries around the world. It uses Ukraine as a testing ground for its cyberwarfare capabilities. If something works there, Moscow takes it on the road. The precursor to the SolarWinds attack in the United States, for instance, was the NotPetya attack in Ukraine. Russian cyberattacks on Ukrainian command and control in February ended up disabling tens of thousands of communications terminals outside the country. In September, Russia’s cyber-military unit Sandworm launched disruptive malware it had used against Ukraine at Polish-based logistics hubs. What happens in Ukraine doesn’t stay in Ukraine.

Needed: A strategy of shared and forward resilience

Until recently, NATO’s resilience efforts were limited to identifying country-by-country benchmarks for critical infrastructures. Only at the June 2022 Madrid Summit did allied leaders agree to apply shared resilience to military and non-military challenges. The test now comes with implementation. Allies must go beyond critical infrastructures to review key industries, financial flows, strategic ports and transportation nodes, supply chains, communications and information networks, and other connective tissues that bind allied societies together. For instance, Germany and Norway have urged NATO to set up a resilience hub to coordinate the police, maritime authorities, and communications of littoral countries of the Baltic and North Seas.

Allies must also be prepared to project resilience forward to non-NATO partners. Allies should complement their efforts at forward defense, which stop at NATO’s edge, with a comprehensive strategy of forward resilience, which would extend to vulnerable democratic partners beyond NATO’s borders. Together with the EU, they should make it a strategic objective to help countries like Ukraine, Moldova, and Georgia resist Russian destabilization and disruption.

Resilience may begin at home, but in today’s deeply interconnected world, no nation is home alone. The United States and its allies must do everything they can to help Kyiv resist Russia’s assaults, because Ukraine is emblematic of a broader ongoing struggle between forces of disruption and resilience. Ukraine must win, both off and on the battlefield. Its fight is our fight too.

An Illuminating Tale of Tracking Turtles

Where do eastern box turtles go? When I started my graduate schooling in Dr. Karen Root’s lab at Bowling Green State University in Ohio, I was quite intrigued by this question. To address it, I conducted a study of box turtle movements in the Oak Openings Region, the distinctive landscape of oak savannas, woodlands, and wet prairies that stretches across seven counties in Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan.

A method called radio telemetry was vital to my work. I walked around under the forest canopy searching for individuals (female or male) and whenever I found one, typically sitting still on the ground, I would pick it up while wearing gloves. In order to track its movements, I attached a radio transmitter onto the carapace (upper shell) using a special type of glue (Fig. 1A). After about a month of searching, I was able to track box turtles at two locations in the Toledo Metroparks system, six individuals in Oak Openings Preserve, and three individuals in Secor Metroparks.

Two to three times a week, I would travel to these local parks and track each turtle using a silver three-pronged antenna and attached receiver. This portable combination detects the signal frequency produced by the transmitter on the tagged turtles, generating a “beeping” sound as it receives the electronic pulse. Guided by “beeps” I could re-find each turtle within an hour (Fig. 1B) depending on how dense the forest understory was. If I walked in the wrong direction, the noise would fade away and become quieter, but as I moved closer to the turtle’s location, the “beeping” sound would get louder and more frequent until I reached the turtle. Sometimes I would walk right past an individual sitting quietly in the leaf litter or under a log as their shell is often highly camouflaged to blend with the sunlit and shadowed patterns of a forest floor. One nice aspect of tracking box turtles with radio telemetry is that they do not run away very quickly, so they are easy to follow!

Radio telemetry is an excellent method for re-locating individuals, and provides a snapshot of where the individual is at a given time. With long-term tracking over the active season (mid-March to early November), researchers can better understand movements within a turtle’s home range, the area the animal regularly travels to meet its daily requirements, including food, shelter, and thermoregulation. Home ranges are estimated by drawing an outline around the outermost locations where a turtle was detected throughout the year, and assuming that the individual uses the area inside this boundary (Fig. 2A). Each time a turtle was found, I recorded the GPS coordinates of its location, and could then measure how far the turtle traveled by drawing a straight line between each location point. However, turtles may not always travel in a straight line, but rather follow an indirect route between detection points (Fig. 2B), so this method likely underestimates actual travel distance.

A research technique involving fluorescent powder can produce a far more accurate picture of daily box turtle movements. Non-toxic fluorescent powder is applied to the turtle’s plastron (underside; Fig. 3A) which then leaves a distinct trail as the turtle travels throughout its environment. At night, with the use of an ultraviolet light (Fig. 3B) these trails can then be illuminated, traced, and mapped. Since box turtles tend to travel near or over the same pathways, and because individual home ranges frequently overlap, multiple powder colors are required for some tracking studies.

I used multiple colors (red, blue, yellow, orange) for different days and individuals. The results of my tracking work using this technique demonstrated that box turtles traveled 32 meters per day, with females traveling slightly less than males, and that 95% of movements were less than 6 meters.
