rather unprompted however. i am literally in the middle of my annual soul eater rewatch/reread and i feel obliged to comment on the soulmates discourse on my dash because one of soul eater's strongest merits as a work is the worldbuilding around weapon/meister relationships, which are textually, literally, the concept of a soulmate executed in a way that doesn't fall into the usual ideological pitfalls conventional soulmates do. the fear of connecting with the world and people around you is a major theme of the series, and if a character succumbs to that fear instead of choosing to face it, they lose their humanity, personhood, and will to self-determination as their tangible, actual souls are subjugated by them. the idea that you have to choose to be better and stronger and put in the effort to do so is central to the writing. having agency is terrifying but you have no choice but to face it; and that's okay, because we're capable of doing difficult things like confronting and overcoming the barrier between you and other people to form genuine relationships. the students of dwma exercise this agency by choosing their weapon/meister partner, who they'll more or less trust with their life for the rest of their careers. additionally, they have to work to make their partnership viable long term, and it's absolutely possible for the link between their souls to break and become incompatible. it's also possible for the link to be rebuilt. and really that's what soulmates should be about in my opinion... meeting someone and learning to care about each other in a way not bound by expectations of relationship castes and then allowing that to mount into a very organic form of trust and care that is both deliberate and wholesome without depending on reciprocity as a measure of the validity of said trust and care.
