Another shot of my practice journal, because it's been a while. Today's goal has been to push the tempi in all of my exercises, etudes, excerpts, and repertoire. I have also added more of the Beethoven excerpt to my practice. I've recently started marking tempi in blue pen. It's much easier to see how that improves when it stands out. Use this method to help memorize tricky passages. The ancient Greeks developed this mnemonic memory device whereby one would remember items in locations throughout a large house or palace. One would memorize the contents of the house in detail as well as the journey between items in the house. Items would be pieces of whatever needed to be memorized such as faces, digits/numbers, lists of words, topics in a verbal presentation. Incidentally the English word “topic” comes from the Greek “topos”, which means “location”. This method is often called the “memory palace” or “method of loci” I use a simplified memorization technique inspired by the memory palace. 1) In Bach’s Preludio from Partita no 3, BWV 2006, measures 29-36 are repeated in measures 79-86 with some notes that are different. I find these places tricky to memorize because I get confused as to which of the “different” parts to play and often play the wrong one in the wrong key! To help, I practice these passages back-to-back and step outside the room for the notes that are not common between the passages. ~~swipe left~~ 2) The memory palace method can be learned by beginners as shown. Children often confuse the endings in Long Long ago and pieces with similar form (Allegretto, Andantino, Happy Farmer). I ask them to first learn the notes that are the same (no endings). Then I assign some version of the memory palace. Day 5#Violympics . Follow directions! Honestly, sometimes its that simple. Didn't get much chance to practice. But I got some assignments done. Some of the keywords and imagery I assigned to rehearsal sections include, astronaut leap, crunch! , popcorn, kreutzer, shradieck, stirring the caramel pot, flying, soaring. On mental rehearsal. Rehearsing connecting the sections in my mind was so challenging. I'm glad I worked on the piece this way.Taking my eyes away from the page really freed me up to work on other things and listen more. While listening to myself on the recordings I notice how bad this piece was. I wasn't frasing and the context was unclear. It was obvious I wasn't listening to myself before this. Saying that, I worked on it. And now even though there a long journey with this piece it's sounding better than I was. I don't know if it's the change in weather or the amount of water I've been drinking, but the motivation to practice today was INSANE. Since finishing school and moving to Orlando (while working basically a full time job and living in an apartment with 5 other people) finding the time and energy to practice has been rough, along with also having any kind of motivation when I do have the other two. Today I feel like something just clicked and made me realize that since there is no endgame, no jury, recital, concert, or audition, I have the freedom to not only choose what I am focusing on, I also can focus on the things I ignored for those endgames. I shifted all my focus to the music on my stand instead of the techniques that can build me up as a musician. The 100 days of practice challenge taught how much I can accomplish when I work little by little, so why not try that again. Time to just work little at a time and make small goals, and most importantly KEEP MYSELF ACCOUNTABLE! #violinpractice🎻 #bachconcerto The slurred passages in #concertoinaminor #3rdmovement #allegroassai by #jsbach presents rhythmic, bowing, and, tone production challenges. Here’s how I practice and present these passages to my students: 3 videos: 1) practice only the subdivisions without bowings, turning all notes into multiples of 16th notes as demonstrated. It is helpful to play a complete measure on a single note to establish the 16th not pulse ahead of the passage you’re practicing. 2) slurred staccato - use the performance bowing and rhythm but with slurred notes re-articulated as shown. This step ensures each note “speaks” and it also helps the player plan out the bow distribution. 3) performance version - rhythms are accurate and all slurred notes sound brilliantly! I’ve chosen to demonstrate measures 100-104 because it’s the longest such passage.
