Two times Rukmi didn't write Rukmini, and the one time he did.
OR: Two times their children helped in repairing their relationship, and the one time they didn't.
1.
Rukmi wakes from deep sleep at a start. His wife is asleep next to him; she had cried herself to sleep after receiving the news.
Rukmi himself had thought he would be sick all of yesterday evening; he had stormed away and locked his chambers, nursing a glass of madira all evening, his eyes staring into the distance.
There is a letter on his bedside table.
He opens it.
The note is unsigned, written in a hasty, sharp hand, but Rukmi knows instantly who it is. He will never not be able to recognize the hand of the man he detested above all, even if it is not the flowing, elegant script Krishna is wont to write in.
I will not waste your time with pleasantries and presumptions. You must already know.
She has already lost too much, Rukmi. I do not know how much more she can bear. I will not beg, but a letter from the brother she has always loved, even to date, can only offer her comfort—comfort I cannot give.
She still loves you. She always will.
Rukmi stares at the letter.
She still loves you.
His sister—
Rukmini, his mind breathes and is assaulted by a cacophony of memories: the sweet chiming of her anklets as she ran to him, her childish laughter as he spun her around, the faint glow of gold on her skin whenever she was upset; the solemn and despairing look she sent his way every time Rukmi ranted about Krishna, the hidden anguish on her face when he declared she was to marry Shishupala, the gold that glimmered on her skin like a second layer in the setting sun as she begged the husband she had chosen to spare his life.
She lost her child, Svami—you know how it feels.
He walks to his desk, mind spinning.
The next morning, his wife awakens to find him slumped on his desk, a bottle of particularly strong madira off to the side. The desk and the floor is littered with multiple parchments, either crumpled or in various states of disarray; all of them are written on.
Rukmini, one reads. O Dvarakaeshvari, another starts.
They never go more than a few sentences.
The one he has slept on begins with: My little radiance.
2.
Rukmavati loves Pradyumna, Bhrata. Let them be happy, please; I am loathe to deny my child anything, not after I lost him and got him back against all laws.
I know you love your daughter too. Let them be happy, brother. Don't let our sour relationship ruin our children's happiness.
Rukmi reads the letter from Rukmini with a steady gaze; she had continued to write him all the years after her marriage even though he never responded.
He reads her letters with fondness, but every time he sits down to write her back, he is reminded of the sharp tug on his hair and the smooth glide of the sword against his scalp as his hair was shorn away. And his fondness turns to mortification and revulsion. His pride has never recovered from the insult Krishna offered him.
Rukmini's son has stolen away his child.
But Rukmi is getting older. His children are of marriageable age now; his eldest son's wife already bears child.
He finds himself thinking of his sister more fondly now, more than the bitterness of his youth. Some part of him is tired of the bitterness. He only wants to hold his little sister closer, in a way he hasn't since she was a young teenager.
He looks up.
"Call off the army," he orders his commander shortly. "If Rukmavati loves my sister's son, I will not interfere in their happiness."
If his commander is surprised, he makes no show of it, and instead bows his head and responds, "As you will, Rajan."
He ignores the way his wife gazes at him with a hidden hope, and turns away. He cannot bring himself to write Rukmini back just yet, so he must hope that no response is response enough for his sister.
(It is; though Rukmini always wonders what would be better: no Vidarbhan army pursuing her child, or a letter that has been a long time coming.)
+ 1.
Rukmi has somehow managed to get through his granddaughter's wedding to Aniruddha without offending any of the Yadavas.
His enemy has sobered in a way he never thought would be possible.
It was the War, the bloodshed being greater than few other battles; Rukmi still smarts from the refusal of both sides to accept his aid.
He has managed to be marginally polite to Krishna out of affection for Rukmini, who he has seen after long years. She had slowly stopped seeking him out or visiting Bhojakatha as often; the last time she had come was over fifteen years ago, and he had missed her like a limb even though he had never fully forgiven her.
It is supposed to be a night of revelry, of reconciliation.
He knows that Rukmini hopes that tonight is the night he lets go of his grudge that is decades-old at this point. His wife has all but begged it of him: "It has been over half our lives, Svami. Our grandchildren are to be wed, let go of this grudge."
But tonight is one of those nights where the only thing Rukmi can remember is the sharp tug on his hair all those days ago. All he could forgive but that one insult; the effect is compounded by how much Rukmi has already drunk, having already passed the fine line where wine was something he could live without. Now it is his lifeblood, he cannot go minutes without draining the crystal goblets that are ever-flowing with wine as red as blood.
He goads Balarama into a dice game. The latter is almost as drunk as him.
They play, and this time not even Rochana's distressed glance as he gloats can distract him from the doom he is spiraling into.
Aniruddha stands up and demands, "Grandfathers, stop."
Neither of them pay him any heed.
Rukmi is enjoying the temper that is rearing its head in Balarama's eyes as he bests his enemy again and again.
But he forgets that for all that Shesha bears the weight of the world and his beloved lord, he is still a snake. And a snake attacks when provoked.
The last thing he sees is the tears in his Rukmini's eyes, the gold flaring on her skin like a tempestuous light storm; amidst the pain and as Balarama raises his club, the last thing he thinks is: I am sorry, little radiance.
A few weeks later, a letter is set on Rukmini's windowsill. No one knows how it got there.
Rukmini opens it with trembling hands, and almost drops it when she recognises her older brother's handwriting.
It is the first letter he himself has sent her in over twenty years.
My little radiance, my gilded namesake,
You were the best thing in my life, ever since I first set my eyes on you. I will never forgive your husband for taking you away, but it is high time that enmity be set aside considering that our grandchildren are to be wed. Your sister-in-law calls me childish for holding on so long even when our grandchildren are ready to make us great-grandparents.
Let this marriage join our families thrice over and restart our relationship.
I wish I had been there for you all those years you needed me, but I wasn't.
I love you, little radiance.
And the last he ever will send her.

Always there for U ❤️
It was night time, Rukmini was laying on the bed, waiting for Krishna to come.. Her one hand was on her baby bump. After few minutes of waiting.. Krishna came in with a cute smile adoring his face. He removed his crown and His Jwellery, and Layed beside her, He kept his one hand on Rukmini's Baby bump and caressed it..
Krishna : Are u not sleeping my love?
Rukmini sighed..
Rukmini : i am not getting sleep!
Krishna raise his eyebrow..
Krishna : Why?
Rukmini : because, your baby doesn't want me to go to sleep!! Whenever i lay down and close my eyes, and get comfortable He just gives me a kick!!
Krishna chuckled hearing her ramblings,
Rukmini : Why are u laughing?
Krishna : nothing 😐
Krishna : What should i do to make u sleep??
Rukmini : FLUTE!!!
Krishna laughed, he stood up , and picked up his flute, and sat beside Rukmini, who kept her head on his lap.. Krishna started playing the flute, it made wonderful melodies... A comfortable calmness surrounded the atmosphere..
After sometimes, Rukmini fell asleep, Krishna stopped playing... He looked down to see his beloved wife sleeping peacefully, keeping one hand on her baby bump, a small smile adorning her face.. Krishna smiled, He gently got up and made Rukmini lay down in a Comfortable position, Krishna then layed beside her, and kept on hand on her belly
Krishna : Good night Little one ❤️
And he kissed the baby bump.. Krishna closed his eyes, and slept..
Late Night
Krishna and Rukmini was in a deep sleep, but suddenly felt a sharp pain on her stomach, making her stir, the pain stopped.. After few seconds she again felt that pain, but it was not reducing, it was increasing.. Rukmini was in pain, she started sweating, She then Gripped krishna's hand tightly..
Krishna woke up and saw Rukmini sweating, she was also breathing heavily but her eyes was still closed.. Krishna panicked..
Krishna : Priye?...
Rukmini didn't respond..
Krishna : Priye! Are u ok?
Rukmini tightened the grip..
Krishna : PRIYE!! ANSWER ME PLEASE!!
Rukmini then opened her eyes, and started shouting in pain..
Rukmini : AAAAHHHH!!!
Krishna : priye!!!.. OMG!! Daasi's!!!
Rukmini : AAAAAHHHH A-AARYYAAA!!!
Krishna started caressing her hair..
Krishna : sshhh, its going to be okay my love..
Rukmini : AARYA!! ITS PAINING!!
Krishna : DAASI'S CALL THE RAJVAIDYA RIGHT NOW!!!
At the Right time Devaki, Rohini, Revati and Subhadra entred the chamber..
Devaki : omg.. Putri..
Devaki sat beside Rukmini and holds her hand and started Rubbing it..
Rukmini : AAAHHH MAATA!!
Devaki : its going to be okay my dear.. Take a deep breath..
Subhadra saw Krishna's tensed face.. She went near him..
Subhadra : krishna bhaiyya... Calm down.. Bhabi will be alright..
Krishna : but.... She's in pain... I cant see her in pain..
Subhadra : Bhaiyya, Bhabi is a strong women... She will be fine..
Krishna nods..
Rajvaidya enters the chamber.. And checks Rukmini.
Rajvaidya : its labour pain...
Devaki turns to Rukmini..
Devaki : putri, i know its paining, but u need to do this okay?, i want you to push..
Rukmini nods, she then pushes....
Subhadra & krishna along with the others were standing outside the chamber.. Hoping that everything goes well, Krishna was walking to and fro with a tensed face...
Balram : kanha..
Krishna : yes dau..
Balram : are you the same guy who told me to stay calm a during the birth of Nishanth?
Krishna : dau... *pouts*
Balram : i know.... Its very, you know.. Stressful.. But CALM DOWN brother... You know take a deep breath..
Krishna : Dau... Really?
Balram sighed..
After so many hours, they still hasn't come out..
Krishna : why are they not coming outside yet?!! It has been.. 3 hours!!
Suddenly Rajvaidya comes outside,
Rajvaidya : uhh-umm Dwarkadeesh... We need your help!!!
Krishna : What?!!, Why??!
Rajvaidya : Dwarkeshwari, is stressed out so, you need to calm her down.... And..
Krishna ran to the chamber..
He saw his wife, covered in sweat, she was also grabbing the pillows as she was trying to push down the baby.. Her lotus shaped eyes Filled with tears... Krishnas heart broke seeing that..
He ran and sat beside Rukmini..He held her hands, and caressed her hair..
Krishna : priye?
Rukmini : a-arya?!! Ahhhhh!!
Krishna : you need to do this... Push!!
Rukmini : i-i can't A-Arya!!!
Krishna : y-you can my love... You are a strong women... The one who made Dwarkadeesh sleepless.. You can my love... Only you can..
Rukmini closed, her eyes..
Rukmini *in mind* : come on my baby, you need to see the world, your father is stressing out, cant you see?... You cant stay inside me for so long...
She then did a deep breath, she grabbed krishnas hand tightly and gave a Push she screamed in pain..
Rukmini : AAAAAHHHHH!!!
She gave birth.
The room was filled with the newborns cry..
Krishnas eyes got filled with tears.. And so did Devaki's...
Rajvaidya : congratulations Dwarkadeesh, the Queen has given birth to a boy...
Krishna gave a big smile, he looked at Rukmini who was laying on the bed her eyes was closed due to exhaustion.. He caressed her hair..
The Rajvaidya, passed the baby to Krishnas hand..
Tears were overflowing down Krishna's face as he held his new born for the first time..
He then hugged the baby..
Krishna : welcome to the yadav family putra!!
He then kissed the forehead of the baby.. The baby smiled at him, he also snuggled at Krishna's arms..
Devaki also picked up the baby and cradled it..
Devaki : he looks exactly like you putra..
Krishna smiled..
Devaki then gave the baby back to Krishna and left the chamber..
Krishna glanced at Rukmini, he kissed her forehead causing her to wake up.. He made the baby lay down beside Rukmini... She smiled..
Rukmini : our baby...
Krishna held the babys hand and said..
Krishna : i promise my putra, i will be always there for you...
Rukmini : what shall we name him Arya?...
Krishna looked at the baby, who was now sleeping...
Krishna : pradyumna..
Rukmini : Karsni Pradyumna 🌸❤️

Love in Separation
Where eight days after Krishna’s disappearance, Rukmini has to make a choice
Tumblr media
"Rukmini didi..." Jambavati called hesitantly, standing far at the doorframe of Rukmini's balcony with the rest of Ashtabharyas closely behind. They stared at Rukmini's posture with a vision that was glossed with warm tears. The chief Queen of Dwarka was overlooking at the barbarous destruction of her own Queendom — all without a word; without a tear.
As a response, Rukmini hummed, quiet inaudibly at that for she knew the news that was about to fall on her ears. 'Pradyumna and Charudeshna', her breath hitched at the thought and fingers mindlessly gripped the railings, directing her affliction at one place.
"Ruku..." Satyabhama wailed this time, worriedly sprinting towards her co-wife with the news that had numbed all their senses already. She knew, that no matter how she tries to put the words, nothing can lessen the sorrowl that it will inevitably bring along. "Oh Rukmini," She spoke, softly placing a hand on Rukmini's shoulder, "Charudeshna and Pradyumna have –"
"Have followed their father's footsteps and left their mother behind all by herself, isn't it?" Rukmini chuckled humourlessly. The younger one stared at Vaidarbhi in dubeity. There were no trace of tears, no disconsolation at the fate; just a smile curling up her lips. Like a hermit above all the wordly muses.
The other wives let another set of tears roll past their quivering lips as if, they all were shedding the tears of Rukmini's anguish. "You're not alone, Didi. Never. Your eight co-wives, your eight priya sakhis are here and fervently vow to never leave your side, ever." Mitravinda added, making every effort to get the Princess of Vidarbha to lower her defences.
"Oh Mitra," Rukmini chuckled. Again. But this time her teary eyes crinkled at their ends and there was a certain warmth in that laughter, a warmth that Dwarka hadn't felt in the last few days. "You, me... us," She said, gesturing at her co-wives, "We're one. We've always been. And anyways, I'm done shedding my tears," She smiled harder, wiping the tear stains on the faces of the other Lakshmis, "And you all should too, for now, there is nothing to lose. Let the burden and the fear wash away. Alright?"
"Have we ever disobeyed you?" Charuhaasini cracked a half smile at the former's reassurance.
"Hm...not that I remember." Rukmini winked, making the rest of the ladies contribute to the muffled giggles while slowly exiting the chambers. "Oh, and Satyaa!" She voiced up, suddenly remembering something she was meant to, long ago.
"Yes, your majesty?"
"Oh pfftt drop it!" The chief queen chuckled, "Arjun will be here anytime now. Don't let the disaster that has dawned upon us come in the way of our duties. He has promised to take the remaining of our people to safety, so make arrangements to welcome him in Dwarka with due honour and assist him with the strategies. And..." Rukmini's musings halted, gulping down the lump slowly resurfacing in her throat.
"And what, Ruku?"
"Take care of Vajranabha, now will you?" Satyabhama listened to her attentively, nodding at Rukmini's every sentence.
"Of course I will. But...but where are you going?" Satyabhama squinted her eyes, scooting closer to Rukmini who was sat across the edge of her bed.
"Me? I'm sitting right in front of you." Rukmini smiled at the former's gesture, getting up from where she was sat, to avoid Satyabhama's perspicacious gaze from over analysing her pale face.
"Rukmini, I know you good enough to read past your monotonous facial expressions. Asking for the saftey for the remaining Yadavas, pleading for the protection of Vajranabha; we all know that you can do that all by yourself too," The third queen followed the movements, standing right behind Rukmini, "Am I talking to the same Dwarkeshwari who is sitting on the throne for her people for the last eight days after Dwarkadheesh —"
"— No." Rukmini replied hastily, cutting Satrajiti before she could continued the cursed sentence. "Satyaa, the last entire week has snatched away a part of me every single day and now all I am left with, is myself. Neither my Natha, nor my children; neither my Dwarka, nor my people.
Neither Dwarkeshwari nor Vaidarbhi; today, you're talking to Rukmini." She sighed, letting a few beads of warm tears roll down her face full of athymy.
Satyabhama's instincts had outplayed her this time and her immediate response to watch Rukmini shed some painful tears, was to engulf her in an embrace like no other. "Let me make this clear, you are not going anywhere. We need you, this Queendom of Dwarka needs you. Narayan himself could not bear separation from you, how will we bear it, Rukmini?"
"What seperation, Satyabhame? Even the soil of Dwarka breathes my name. No mortal curses can seperate Rukmini from her people and her Dwarka." Moved by Satyabhama's words, Rukmini blinked back her remaining tears.
"Dwarkeshwari ki jay ho. Mata, Rajkumar Arjun has arrived in Dwarka." A daasi informed, briefly interrupting the two sisters in what might be their last mortal meeting.
"Great. Satyaa, I think you should get going now. And don't forget the things I told you." Rukmini comanded, patting the other queen's back.
Satyabhama glanced at her unconvincingly. "I won't, but what about you?" She asked, turning back to face Rukmini again.
"I shall join you all soon. But before that, need to breathe some fresh air and...and get a few things off my mind." Rukmini stuttered, fiddling with the only ring that was tightly wrapped around her finger. The ring that she had never once removed ever since Krishna slid it down her ring finger on their wedding day.
"Sure?"
"Ye–yes my dear Satya..."
"I'll be waiting."
Satyabhama stole one last glance at her favourite co-wife before proceeding to perform her own duties. Rukmini, on the other hand, had thrown her body against the locked door of her chambers. Eyes squeezed shut and heavy tears coursing down without any barrier, she took multiple glances around her chamber. She could hear giggles of her children, Krishna's playful banter and his melodious flute echoing from every corner of the room.
It was just yesterday that Pradyumna and Charudeshna had walked into her chambers. And today, they had simply walked out of her life. It was just yesterday that Charumati had gotten married and promised that she would visit her often and today it was Rukmini who would keep re-visiting the place where Charumati'a agni chita burnt louder than her mother's cries. It was just yesterday that Aniruddh had built a whole temple for her and Krishna, telling how intricately he would worship them daily, but today it was just Rukmini squaring off against another vigraha of Rukmini.
The goddess of Fortune slowly removed her footwear; barefootedly exiting the royalty from the other end of the palace ever so carefully to not make any noise of her presence known. The cold waves of the sea washed over her feet as if they were restless to do so for a long time. Her eyes shimmery eyes watched the chariot of Arjun safely leaving the gates of Dwarka along with Vajranabha. "Yashashasvi Bhava, Putra..." She whispered to herself. Another lone tear escaped her lotus eyes on seeing the gut wrenching personification of the curse. Rukmini couldn't meet her eyes with all the bloodshed of her own people, the destruction of her own Queendom.
The water level, whose gentle waves previously bathed her feet, abruptly began rising with each step that Rukmini took away from Dwarka. Rukmini didn't know where Jara shot the arrow for had she done that, the anguish of the seperation from her beloved, would have prevented her from carrying out her final obligations as a monarch. Despite not knowing the whereabouts of where Krishna took his last mortal breath, there was this invisible force of their love, leading her to where she was supposed to be. Afterall, Rukmini was inseparable from her Shyam.

note : I just wanted to repost what I had written on my previous blog
Also Vajranabha - great grandson of Krishna and Rukmini. According to the folktale I heard, Rukmini ruled over Dwarka before leaving her mortal body and Dwarka drowned the moment she stepped out, unable to bear separation from their Queen.

Krishna
Krishna (Krsna or Hari Krishna) is a major god of the Hindu pantheon and considered the eighth incarnation of Vishnu. He is perhaps the most popular of all the heroes of Hindu mythology. Krishna's adventures appear in the Mahabharata, Bhagavad Gita, Harivamsa, and the sacred texts known as the Puranas where he is described as the Supreme Being and creator of the universe.
The most ancient tales of Krishna in sacred texts involve his adventures with the Pandava princes whilst later, stories accumulated over the centuries which describe his eventful youth, when Krishna used his proficient weapons skills to good effect to defeat a host of fearsome enemies, demons and monsters.
Family & Adventurous Youth
According to tradition Krishna belonged to the Yadava - a pastoral race - and the god's birth is picturesquely described in the Mahabharata. One day Vishnu, the great Hindu god pulled two hairs from his own head, one white and one black. The black hair was planted into the womb of Devaki, a princess of the city of Mathura, and so Krishna was born into the Pandava family, his earthly father being Vasudeva. Unfortunately for Krishna his mother's brother, Kamsa, had been warned that Devaki's eighth child would kill him, and so Kamsa determined to murder the eighth child, a crime he had already carried out seven times before Krishna was born. Fortunately, Vasudeva took the precaution of hiding Krishna in the remote village of Vrindavana where the boy was brought up as a simple cowherd (in this guise he can be referred to as Govinda). There he spent an idyllic childhood and stirred the hearts of many gopis or herd-women with his dark good looks, playful charm, and mastery of music and dance.
Thus the story of Krishna contains a double concealment - Krishna is both a god disguised as a mortal and a prince disguised as a commoner. Accordingly, the myths contain many metaphors of disguise, such as a spark within a pile of ashes or a mighty sword in its scabbard, and these hint at Krishna's dual purpose as the punisher of human deeds but also as a bringer of enlightenment.
Krishna's foster parents at Vrindavana were Nanda and Yashoda, his sister is Subhadra, and his brother Balarama. Krishna's favourite consort was the cowherd woman Radha (or perhaps even his wife if they married in secret, as some sources claim). Tradition has it that the god actually acquired 16,108 wives and fathered 180,000 sons. Queen Rukmini, an earthly form of the goddess Lakshmi, is considered Krishna's second most favoured wife after Radha. With Rukmini, Krishna had a son, Pradyumna, and a daughter, Carumati.
Krishna was involved in many escapades in his adventurous youth. Notable amongst these are his various killings and thrashings of prominent enemies such as the ogress Putana, the giant bull danava, the giant snake Kaliya, and the king of the Hayas (horses). Also swiftly dealt with was the scheming tyrant Kamsa – after whose beheading Krishna established himself as king of Mathura. Krishna slew many demons and demon kings: Muru and his 7,000 sons, Pralamba – who Krishna beat up using only his fists, Naraka – son of the Earth and who had accumulated a harem of 16,000 captured women, and the sea-demon Pancajana who looked like a conch shell and who lost his magic shell to Krishna which the hero carried thereafter and used as a trumpet. Krishna also found time to lift the mountain Govardhana to foil a terrible deluge sent by Indra, to conquer Saubha, the floating city of the Titans (daityas), got the better of the sea-god Varuna, and even managed to steal the divine discus possessed by the fire-god Agni. Against mere mortals Krishna also wreaked havoc amongst the Gandharas, Bhojas, and Kalingas, amongst others.

Okay I need me some Vasant x Krishna (/plat) hcs
OK SO... Let's get into it....
(I'm gonna assume he has a avatar and also I won't say anything about any ships - other than RukminixKrishna elopement - because I don't know what anyone prefers)
He's a flower vendor from Mathura.
– When Krishna first came to Mathura, on his way to Kans' palace he meets him for the first time.
– After everything happens, and when he and Balaram finally gets the chance to roam around they again spot.... Nalin? (It means lotus)
– Ofcourse the three of them instantly bonds together and spends every second of the gushing about flowers.
– When Subhadra is born, Nalin becomes the sweet neighbourhood bhaiya to her.
– They grow up like that and when Krishna moves to Dwarka, Nalin goes with his flower bestie ofcourse.
AND also ofcourse given the know-in-all Krishna is, he ABSOLUTELY knows who Nalin is
Now coming to when Krishna is Dwarkadhish..
Remember that starbharat Mahabharat version where Krishna takes Arjun with him to elope with Rukmini? I don't know what everyone prefers so I am going with the canon version here, where Krishna rushes of all by himself
– He takes Nalin with him but leaves him somewhere behind before going near the temple. (Nalin actually returns with Balaram to give the new couple more...‘privacy’)
– When Arjun was in Dwarka ofcourse both of them instantly vibes together that also through dancing.
– Nalin actually helps in the Subhadra-Arjun abduction case. Though Balaram kinda becomes annoyed with him because of that but they patch up anyways...
– When Pradyumna is born OFCOURSE Nalin is delighted his long lost bestie is back... But sadly it lasts only for a moment as Pradyumna is again kidnapped and doesn't return for a long time..
– Over all he is there being the chill “Mama” (yes mama because I really like that one and it also gives space for both Lakshman and Balaram to shine as uncles) to all of Krishna's and Balaram's kids
– When Abhimanyu is there Nalin bonds with him quickly too and becomes his third mama... They actually bond the most after Pradyumna and Krishna..
He's there being the flower bestie to everyone and dumping flowers on everyone and anyone
Uhhhh tell me if I am forgetting anything other than that anybody is welcome to add anything else, I didn't go outside canon...

Madana Gopala “God of Love” Talon Abraxas
The form of Krishna known as Madanagopala is to be found in the sculptural programme of several Vaishnava temples of the Vijayayanagara era (fourteenth to eighteenth century) in southern India and, in particular, Tamil Nadu.
Madana is sweet enchantment, the seducer of the mind, and Gopala is the youthful herder of cows. In this form, Krishna has absorbed and subsumed the qualities of the god of love and sexual passion, Manmatha or Kama. The heats of lust and infatuation have been transformed into the rich rasa of transcendental love. Madanagopala sweetly sings and plays His flute, calling all to approach this exalted disposition – entering His world of luscious, enlightened duality where manifest form is the scintillating vibration of His eternal love play.
Madanagopala may be ten- or eight-armed and is depicted standing or seated upon a hexagon. As well as His flute, He carries various implements. Starting at the deity’s top right is the solar discus or chakra, the elephant goad/hook (ankusa) and then the flower arrow. From the top left, he holds the sacred conch (sankha), the three corded noose (pasa), and the sugarcane bow (ikshukodanda). The flower bow and arrow are both implements normally carried by Kama and his consort Rati, the goddess of pleasurable sensual enjoyment. Here, however, they are depicted as devotees of the Lord and they offer a garland of wild flowers from all seasons (vanamala). The single arrow held by Madanagopala is representative of Kama’s five powerful arrows of desire, each arrow representing a unique aspect of passion: excitement (unmadana), heat (tapana), drying up (sosana), paralyzing of normal bodily functions (stambhana) and full infatuation (sammohana).
The god of sensual love, Kama, is known by various epithets – Manmatha, Kandarpa, Madana, and Mara. Here He is shown on Krishna’s right. He holds aloft his standard – the makara banner from which Kama gets the additional name of Makaradhvaja, meaning that his flag is marked with the makara. It is symbolic of potent creation and fertility. Kama’s skin colour (nupura) is red, though variant forms are green or golden yellow. His father is Vishnu. The most famous mythological episode involving Kama is his having been burnt to ashes by Siva, whose meditation Kama had sought to disturb. Kama went on to be reborn as Krishna’s son, Pradyumna. He has two consorts, Priti (delight) and Rati (pleasure).
Rati is depicted on Madanagopala’s left. She is the daughter of Daksa Prajapati and her presence is likened to the youthful unfoldment of Vasant (spring) and with it, the longing in all nature for procreation. She is exceedingly attractive and well versed in seductive arts. Her hair is piled up into an elaborate ornamental knot (kesabandha), secured with a golden band decorated with fresh spring leaves and flowers. These impressive south Indian coiffures are to be seen on the figures of queens, princesses and high-ranking temple patrons.
As a pair, Kama and Rati are carved on pillars leading to the garbha griha. Their animal vehicles (vahanas), the goose, swan or parrot, are interchangeable. Lovely forms can be seen in the 17th century marriage hall (kalyana mandapa) in Kanchipuram’s Varadaraja temple. Outstanding even in the superlative world of Vijayanagara sculptural art are the splendid examples in Sri Villiputtar’s Andal temple complex. Here Rati sits astride a goose, admiring her own reflection in a mirror held aloft in her left hand, while the right holds a kohl stick.
Seated in the center at the bottom of the painting is Vishnu’s chief vahana, Garuda. He is shown as per his description in the Vishnu-dharmottara, with a body the color of an emerald, fierce bulging eyes and an eagle beak. There are many variant forms of Garuda – in North India one does not tend to see Garuda associated with Krishna, however, in the south, it is more frequent. In Vaishnava temples, Garuda is installed in a small shrine facing the garba griha (home of the main deity), or on a high pillar within the temple compound, or just outside the main entrance, as in Puri’s celebrated Jagganath temple.
Forming a canopy over Madanagopala’s head is the lush foliage of a Kalpakataru or wish-fulfilling tree. The tree boasts many types of flowers and fruits and is perpetually in bloom. It is a feature of the god’s celestial realms. Nestled within its foliage are several kili (parrots) and a mayil (peacock). Krishna cherishes both types of bird and is said to have several as pets. Midway to Madanagopala’s right is his favorite tree, the kadamba. It bears small, globular orange/yellow flowers with a beautiful perfume. In season, the flowers are much favoured for use as garlands. Growing at the Lord’s feet are a profusion of flowering sacred tulasi, a plant considered an incarnated goddess. Tulasi leaves are used as offerings to all Vaishnava deities and its wood is favoured for use in malas for mantra sadhana.
The two brown decorative panels at the sides of the arch display kinnaras. The term kinnara translates as something like ‘what are these?’ as they are a bizarre and beautiful com-posite of various creatures, animal, human and divine. They are usually shown playing musical instruments – especially, the veena. Kinnaras have intoxicating siren-like voices, but are aus-picious in nature and loving by disposition. They are often carved in light relief on temple pillars.
Lastly, within the orange border are two decorated friezes of the Vaishnava sectarian marking or Namam. The Namam is worn on the forehead and is typically of two forms (of course, there are variants). The form depicted on the upper strip is the Vadagalai which is U-shaped. The one on the lower strip is the Tengalai which is Y or V shaped. The central stripe between the U or V is known as the Tiruchurnam and is traditionally made of a lime and saffron mix or red ocher. The meaning of the Tiruchurnam is the same as that of the bindu: the whole-ness of divinity and the point of utmost potency from which all manifests. The wearing of the Namam is a highly important preparation for all kinds of ritual action or worship within the Vaishnava fold and is considered to be sanctifying for both the wearer and observer.
