Well into the night, Hiccup still lies awake in bed. He’s on his back underneath layers of blankets and furs and he spends these hours staring up at the ceiling. There’s very little else he can do, very little else he has the energy to do. Their bedroom is freezing despite the fire they kept burning in the firepit to keep their house warm. He’s sweating plenty underneath the many layers and yet he’s apparently not warm enough. Why else would old injuries be acting up?

His stump and the burns he suffered all from a battle many years ago haunt him every single winter and with devastating winter around the corner, his nights are only going to get worse. Then there is the fact that this season is a little more different than most as this year he’s pregnant with his and his wife’s first.

He’s a well over halfway, though the layers on him makes him seem even bigger than he actually is. Astrid is asleep, Toothless and the Light Fury are asleep. He lets his hand glide over his bump on top of the furs, even the baby is asleep. They’ve started moving and then kicking, but he has learned by now that the lack of movement doesn’t mean that something is wrong. It simply means that they’re asleep.

It’ll still be winter when they come, his stump and burn scars will still be plaguing him when the day comes that he’ll have to push a new human being into the world and it’s not for the first time that he realizes just how reckless this pregnancy is.

He doesn’t blame Astrid for his situation, his sleepless nights. He was just as thoughtless when he let her between his legs and eagerly accepted everything she had to offer him. They’re married, they want to love each other completely. Besides, he’s the one with the broken body, he should’ve thought of the implications. Those are certainly the thoughts going through his head. Nowadays, he can’t get around without the use of a cane, a tool usually reserved for his worser days.

With the amount of scarring on his lower body, he even needed Gothi to take a look at him to make sure whether he could even give birth to begin with. Right now, however, his biggest concerns are his sleepless nights.

Hiccup rolls onto his right side with some difficulty and tries to find a position that’s comfortable. Curled up or one leg out, arms underneath his pillow to thicken it up or not. He tries on his left side when the other one doesn’t work out and does his best to keep his grunts of pain to himself. He simply can’t find comfort and the twinges in his scarred muscles and joints don’t help matters much.

It’s maddening, enough to drive him up the walls. It’s frustrating.

Despite his best efforts, Astrid turns around to face him. In the darkness, their eyes meet.

“Hey,” she starts quietly. “Can’t sleep?”

Hiccup shakes his head. At least he can still move something without pain. Until morning comes and a migraine will have inevitably taken up residence inside his brain.

“I’m so tired,” he admits and he wishes that it was enough. That being tired and closing his eyes was all that it took for him to fall asleep, but it isn’t.

Astrid reaches over and cups his cheek. “Just close your eyes, try to get as much rest as you can even if you can’t fall asleep. And when morning comes, I’ll be taking over as chief. You curl up to Toothless, okay?”

Hiccup is tired enough and in enough pain that he agrees. Not that Berk expects him out much in his condition. He nods and Astrid scoots closer. She wraps her arms around him to hold him to her and he wraps one around her. Her chin touches his crown and his forehead her chest, he closes his eyes. She goes back to sleep and he does his best to.

Still feeling the aftermath of all those Pregcup requests I got in my three week vacation, but this is my first time actually drawing him, too. I'm proud of myself for pulling off a couple for once and for doing a decent job at a background + shading.

Anyway, just Hiccup relaxing and using his husband as a pillow to get the weight off, Dagur loving the opportunity.

just realized that snotpreg and pregcup happening simultaneously or near-simultaneously has the potential to be sooo funny.

okay okay so some context: on ominous' blog many a baby daddy was discussed for snotpreg. one of those baby daddies that was discussed was viggo (bc smth smth sir ulgerthorpe has game).

anyway. the thought of viggo being all >:] because he got one of hiccup's riders pregnant which will surely infuriate hiccup

only to then find out that he could have gotten hiccup pregnant

like i'm sorry but the moment i thought about it i giggled because viggo would be devastated. he knocked up the wrong rider he can't believe he's done this. he tries to take hiccup's baby hostage but accidentally takes his own by accident. AND he can't even hold her right!

Viggo would be sooooooooooo mad. And him both taking the wrong baby hostage as well as not even being able to hold them right sounds in character for him. Viggo does not seem like the type of person who knows what to do with babies or children in general.

There is not an ounce of Hiccup that believes he’ll find a warm welcome back on Berk.

For three years, he got to enjoy the title of “hero,” as outlandish and wrong as it was. The Hairy Hooligans told tales of how he defeated the Red Death, fended off the Outcasts and the Berserkers alike and he never recognized himself in those story, despite having lived through each one.

They came to him with their problems, especially if they were dragon related. And whenever he returned home for a visit, there was always cheering, always a hearty clap on his shoulder. But all of that was before he lost their gold in a bad plan to one-up Viggo.

Sure, it’s been months since then and he didn’t just get their lost gold back, he added about five times as much, but that doesn’t erase the single most biggest mistake he’s made in years. That stupid plan was where all of his misery first started, all of Berk’s misery.

They won’t have forgotten.

“What’s wrong?” Stormfly has broken from the formation to fly next to Toothless and allow Astrid to ask.

“Wha? Not-nothing’s wrong! Why would anything be wrong?” Hiccup asks with his shoulder’s high. His attempt to make it sound like he isn’t worried about coming home isn’t exactly successful.

“You’re wearing that look. Like you’re headed for a scolding,” Astrid remarks, which makes him pull a look of confusion. That is exactly what he thinks he’s headed towards.

“I mean, if he disappeared for months and then came back without the gold, he probably would be,” Snotlout breaks away from the formation, too. It’s friendly taunting, but Hiccup can’t help the guilt he feels.

Because he did forget to. He left on that mission that ended in disaster, turned his mind off and then forgot what purpose he traded himself in for. Forgot about his people and just loved the Grimborns instead.

They still don’t know.

He’s not wearing any armor, having returned what Heather and Astrid borrowed him. But if he did, he’s certain he would feel it squeeze him around his middle.

Another few weeks have passed since the battle, since things have somewhat returned to normal on Dragon’s Edge for however long it may still last. Hiccup can only guess he’s in his fourth month now. If he looks down, there’s a bump his clothes are starting to fail in hiding and he’s too worried about hurting the baby to wear a chest piece that might squish them.

That’s just how well he loved the two brothers. He loved them so much he conceived their child.

“Uh, are you okay, Hiccup? You became really quiet just now,” and now Fishlegs has broken from the formation and Ruffnut and Tuffnut followed him.

“You know that was just a joke, right?” Snotlout asks, worried his dumb taunting might’ve pushed Hiccup into a moment again.

Things did go back to normal on Dragon’s Edge. Minus these frequent, near daily moments, like this. When Hiccup seems to sink so far into his own thoughts that he seems to forget the world around him. And everytime he does, he wears this troubled expression, like he has the weight of the world on his shoulders and doesn’t know how to tell them about it.

“I’m fine, just… The flight is wearing on me,” and that isn’t a lie. He’s exhausted. Progressing further in his pregnancy has only made him more tired. Not that the lack of sleep and the stress are helping much.

“We’re almost there,” Astrid assures him before the dragons take them back into formation. Hiccup smiles at that, although that statement doesn’t fill him with much confidence.

The rest of the flight is done in mostly silence on his part as it takes almost two whole days to fly from Dragon’s Edge to Berk and they’ve already done quite a bit of it. When the familiar sight of home finally appears on the horizon, it energizes some of them, but not Hiccup. He feels the icy cold grip of dread wrap around his heart.

Home comes closer and closer, there’s a growing chattering amongst the Dragon Riders as their excitement does. Hiccup checks his saddlebags one last time to make sure he took it with him; the plan for one final strike against the Dragon Hunters, against the brothers. It’s the whole reason why they’re making the long trip home, to further prove just how much he and the baby no longer belong with them.

“I can’t mess this one up, Toothless,” he mutters to his dragon, careful as he leans forward. He’s not sure how many more strikes he still has left, although he’s pretty sure he ran out of those by the time he turned 12.

Toothless croons softly at him, telling him without speaking a word that he’ll be just fine. He’s the only one of them who knows the full extent of his situation.

The time has come and the Dragon Riders land in the plaza and by then a small, and happy, crowd has already gathered. Astrid is immediately greeted by her parents, as is Fishlegs. Snotlout spots his mother coming and the Barf and Belch barely land before the twins are already off their necks and on their way home. Dagur, Heather and their respective dragons have elected to stay on the Edge. They already know the plan and have no family on Berk to visit. Toothless remains hovering for a moment longer before deciding that Hiccup will simply never be ready and then he sets down with the other dragons.

His Night Fury has only just touched the ground and he can already feel every eye on him. Shame wells up immediately and he looks down at himself, wondering if his pregnancy is as obvious to them as it is to him.

“Look! It’s Hiccup!” Someone shouts and Hiccup hesitantly looks up to suddenly find himself surrounded by people.

Smiling, smiling people.

“You’re back, boy!”

“How have you been doing, son?”

“We were hoping to see you come by for a visit a long time ago! What kept you?”

The questions keep on coming even as Hiccup dismounts from his dragon’s saddle, but they’re not as overwhelming as he feared, certainly not as negative. So long as nobody notices the burden he bears, he’ll be okay. So long as nobody notices…

A Berkian man throws his arm around Hiccup’s shoulder as he immediately asks him to talk to his dad for him, everyone just a little bit too familiar with the Haddocks and Hiccup is used to this. And yet, this time, he flinches away from the touch and feels himself grow just a little bit nauseous.
