The cars weren’t the most elegant on the planet, and the reduced trunk opening to accommodate the changes reduced practicality. Still, the Aerocoupe and 2+2 proved effective on superspeedways like Daytona and Talladega. Pontiac released 1,118 examples of the Grand Prix 2+2 to qualify for NASCAR competition, with all finished in a combination of Silver and Gray. The history of this car is unclear, but it presents exceptionally well for its age. The paint retains a healthy shine, while the plastic and graphics are excellent. Dealers sold the 2+2 at a premium price, but the extra cost didn’t guarantee that these classics would lead an easy life. Many owners drove them hard and fast, and it is common to see dilapidated and rusty examples appearing in the classic market. This car has avoided that fate and would turn more heads today than in 1986.

Pontiac considered the Grand Prix 2+2 to be a muscle car, although the 165hp and 245 ft/lbs of torque produced by its 305ci V8 doesn’t hint at anything special. Buyers received a four-speed 200-4R automatic transmission and a 3.08 rear end as standard fare, with no manual option to improve performance. The ¼-mile ET of 17 seconds perfectly demonstrates the depths of The Malaise Era. While that figure looks modest by modern standards, it was what buyers expected during that period. The situation would improve in the future, but it is sobering to consider that you can drive a four-cylinder family sedan or hatchback off the showroom floor today that could show this Grand Prix a clean set of heels.

The Pontiac Grand Prix 2+2 was a one-year-only model sold in limited numbers. I don’t find these the most attractive cars on the planet, with Chevrolet achieving better aesthetic results with its Aerocoupe. However, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and you might find yourself irresistibly drawn to this classic. I respect that if it is the case because it is a car that would still draw crowds thirty-eight years after it rolled off the line. Evolving racing rules mean we will probably never see similar vehicles in the future, and owning this Grand Prix would be a link to the company’s motorsport heritage.

I haven't posted here because we got super busy and then we bought a car and I had instant regret and I haven't known how it was going to work out so I just haven't posted.

We've wanted to replace my Civic for a long time. And finally we did. With a 2020 volvo v60. I love volvos. I had a 2000 v40 that I ADORED and named PeeWee. My parents have had volvos for ages. I just feel a sense of brand loyalty to them.

But this car took premium fuel. It's AWD so if I had to replace one tire it would have to be all four. And our tiny townhouse has a tiny garage and I literally cried trying to park this v60 in it. It was beeping like mad and just barely fits. And the fuel efficiency is so much lower than my civic that I was just... I felt some regret.

Since it's carmax, there's a 30 day return window, which is great. But the civic is sold - so it's like, okay, we can return this volvo, but then what do we get? We tried a handful of things, and I am change-resistant and was like "this handles differently than my civic and it's weird to me" about EVERYTHING. It wasn't a super fun process.

In the end, we settled on a 2021 mazda3 hatchback. We drove a 2019 (same car as the 2021) and carmax is shipping the 2021 to us from Maryland. Hopefully it gets here by this weekend and we can return the volvo and by the mazda and be done with everything.

To be honest, I didn't LOVE the mazda either, but Ken likes it, and it's our first big joint purchase, and I know a lot of my resistance is just that it feels different than my civic, and I'll get used to how it feels after a couple weeks. The hatch makes it easier to get a bike inside than my civic with its trunk. That was a key motivator to get rid of the civic - every time I went biking I started the ride in a terrible mood because of what a nightmare it is to get a bike in and out of there.

So anyway, I'm a bit embarrassed that we bought a car and I changed my mind, and I'm annoyed that we could drive so many cars and I didn't feel like any of them was "the one," and I'm super annoyed that our garage is so small that it dramatically cuts our options down. But I'm trying to be less pissy and more accepting and to look on the bright side: in just a few days we'll be done with the car buying process, at least for a few years until Ken is ready to part with his truck.

Toyota Crown, a new high-riding sedan with the shape of a hatchback (though it has a conventional trunk), hybrid-only powertrains and truly funky styling. Toyota often plays it too safe with its new vehicles, so it's nice to see the company really swinging for the fences with the Crown.

t has been 50 years since Toyota last sold its Crown sedan in the U.S., but the model was introduced in Japan in 1955 as the Toyopet Crown. It has been Toyota's mainstream sedan there ever since, the choice of families, executives, taxi drivers, and police.

The 2023 Crown, now in its 16th generation, is back in the States as the three-trim, all-hybrid, all-wheel-drive, tall-roofed, fastback-styled four-door replacing the venerable Toyota Avalon sedan. It is almost the same size, inside and out, as the Honda Accord and Volkswagen Arteon sedans.

The Crown's tall roofline and high seating position have generated some debate. But there's no denying that it is eye-catching, especially in the optional two-tone color scheme available with the top Platinum trim.

By positioning the Crown as a premium model, Toyota is telling shoppers that this is a special vehicle, not to be confused with other midsize sedans. By offering two hybrid powertrains, one of them more performance-oriented, Toyota hopes the Crown will appeal to those seeking fuel efficiency and creature comforts as well as those hoping for a bit of twisty country road fun.

We found that generally, it succeeds but still falls short on driving excitement, even with the 340-horsepower hybrid system and adaptive suspension that come exclusively with the Platinum trim.

Competition in the non-luxury large sedan segment is almost gone. Three rivals — the Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger, and Nissan Maxima — are being discontinued in 2023. That leaves the Accord Hybrid and VW Arteon. Some shoppers might consider the Genesis G80, Audi A6, and Volvo S90 mild hybrids, all of which cost more and aren't likely to be cross-shopped with the Toyota Crown. Based on appearance and premium content, though, the Crown can proudly hold its head high in that crowd.

All the Platinum's performance enhancements come at a serious penalty to fuel economy. Toyota estimates this version of the Crown will return 27 mpg in combined driving — a fairly unimpressive figure compared to other sedans with non-hybrid powertrains. The current Avalon V6, for instance, produces a bit less power and has a 26 mpg combined estimate, as does the BMW 540i with its marginally less potent turbocharged inline-six. On paper, the Crown Platinum's powertrain seems heavy and overengineered without much benefit to the driver compared to other options.
