     Cas woke up around noon, still tired as hell and still not completely healed, but definitely better then the previous day's. Being human always took a beating on him, especially right after losing his grace, but he knew eventually he would adjust and be able to hunt with Sam and Dean again.
     The brother’s had left early that morning to take down a vamp nest in a nearby town. He knew they wouldn't be back till late, and there was the possibility they wouldn't even come home until tomorrow, so Cas had taken the opportunity to sleep in. But now he decided it was time to get up and not waste the entire day. So he forced his still exhausted body to get out of bed and venture out into the bunker.
     He was just about to open his door when a little yellow piece of paper caught his attention. He took the sticky note off the door and read it aloud, "Cas, you're human now, so don't forget to eat. Dean."
     His stomach took that moment to growl furiously, "I guess I am a little hungry. I don't know how humans maintain their bodies if they are this hungry all the time."
     He tucked the little note into his pajama pants pocket and made his way into the kitchen. As he walked the hall’s of the bunker he noticed more and more how hungry he actually was, but in the same instant hoped that there was something in the kitchen that he was actually able to make. He was certainly no chef, he could barely make eggs without nearly burning the kitchen down, so hopefully Sam had some cereal left in the cupboard or something easy. Otherwise he wasn't too sure what he was going to eat.
     He made the last turn into the kitchen and stopped in the doorway. On the counter there was a small pile of clothes and another yellow note. He walked over and read the note, "Hey, Cas, don't forget that humans get cold. I grabbed you a sweater and some socks, stay warm, Dean."
     Cas couldn't help but smile to himself, Dean was right again. Now that he was out of the warmth of his bed, his arms and toes were getting cold. So he put on the socks and sweater and walked over to the fridge.
     "Another note," he smiled and took it off the fridge door, "I sort of figured you'd sleep past breakfast, and I know how much you suck at using the stove, so I made you some lunch. It's in the fridge. Just some PB&J sandwiches, I know how much you like them and I know it's simple, but it's definitely better than scorched eggs and bacon. I also made you some pasta and garlic bread for dinner if I'm not back. Just put it in the microwave for two minutes. Dean."
     Cas tucked that note into his pocket with the others and grabbed one of the wrapped up sandwiches from the fridge then sat down. With the first bite he moaned, he loved PB&J sandwiches so much, and he was so glad that Dean had been so kind as to prepare him food for the day. He would not have been happy with any of the burnt food he would have ended up with had he cooked himself.
     He spent a little bit extra time eating the sandwich, savouring it as much as he could, before he was finally finished and now found himself with nothing to do. He tossed his wrapper in the garbage, stood there for a minute, then sighed and slowly wandered through the bunker.
     He had been in this situation before, him staying behind while the brothers went on a hunt without him, and every time he hated it. He hated being alone in the bunker with nothing to do, and to top it off both Dean and Sam had taken their laptop’s with him to prevent him from attempting to do anything other than relaxing. As he recalled, Dean's exact words on the matter had been, "No work, no searching for cases, nothing related to hunting, period, while we're gone. You just sit back, relax, and focus on getting your strength back." And so now here he was, bored, with nothing to do and no one to talk to.
     He considered for a brief moment calling Dean to see how the hunt was going, but quickly decided against it. The last thing he wanted to do was accidentally distract Dean mid hunt and have him end up injured or even possibly worse, especially now considering he couldn't heal him if something happened. So instead he kept wandering.
     He eventually wandered through the map room, ended up in the library, considered for a moment reading a book but decided he wasn't in the mood to focus that hard right now, and was about to head back to his room with the thought of going back to bed when he saw another yellow note on the wall.
     He walked over to it and grabbed it from the wall and all this one said was, "Cas," with an arrow pointing to the right. He followed it, finding yet another note with the same message, and another, and another, until he found himself in front of Dean's hidden little man cave at the back of the bunker. The note on the door this time said, "Come on in, Cas, and look on the tv."
     "If you say so, Dean," and he walked in. There was another note on the tv right where the last note had said it would be, so he read that one, "I knew you would end up wandering around, bored with nothing to do. So I cued up a new Netflix series for you to watch, there's also beer in the mini fridge, and snacks for you in the cupboard above it. When I get back, maybe we could have a movie night? Haven't had one in a while. Dean."
     "I would love that, Dean, now you just need to hurry home." He added that note to his collection and walked over to the cupboard. Inside there was a bowl with all of Cas's favourite snacks, he then grabbed a couple beers, and walked over to the couch. He placed the snacks and beer on the table, grabbed the remote and turned on the tv.
     "The Walking Dead," he read the title and the description of the show, "why are all the shows about monsters? We deal with this everyday and now it's all over tv. But if Dean likes it, then it must be good."
     He hit play on the first episode and then started digging through the bags of snacks in the bowl, trying to decide which one to open first, when he found another note. "Enjoy the snacks, Cas, but don't eat them all at once or you won't wanna eat dinner later, and you have to eat dinner. Humans need more than just candy and sweets all day, so make sure you save some room for that pasta. Also, don't forget at some point to shower, humans have to shower. Dean."
     Cas stared at the note for a second before he added it to his pocket. He then grabbed the bag of mini Twix bars and tossed one into his mouth. The man on the tv who had been shot in the beginning of the episode, Officer Rick if he remembered correctly, was just waking up from his coma, so he decided he'd watch another episode or two after this then he would shower as Dean had reminded him.
~~~~~~~~~~~
     Six episode’s, one shower, a bowl of pasta, and three bags of candy later and Cas was starting to feel tired again. He tried to wait up a little bit in hopes that Sam and Dean might come back tonight, but it was nearing midnight now and he assumed that they had decided to find a motel for the night. He would call them in the morning to make sure.
     The episode he was watching was almost over, so he decided to wait for it to finish before he turned the tv off, but his newly human body had other plans. He felt himself slowly tipping to the side, falling, his eyes closing, and he ended up landing his head on the throw pillow. But a little crinkle on the side of his face woke him up enough to sit up and grab the sticky note that was now stuck to his face.
     "Hey, Cas, I knew you would try waiting up for us and falling asleep halfway through your Netflix binge. But since we're not home yet go to bed, Cas, don't sleep on the couch all night, alright. See you when I get home, Dean."
     He chuckled lightly, still almost half asleep, but the thoughtfulness of Dean, leaving all those notes for him all day to make sure he was ok on his own, reminding him to eat and drink and rest, Cas couldn't help but blush. Not to mention he suddenly felt much warmer then he had all day.
     He tucked that note into his pocket as he stretched on the couch, then forced himself to get up and shuffled to his room.
     Even though he had been in there this morning and already found the note on the door, he couldn't help but find himself looking for one last note from Dean. Maybe there had been one he didn't see before he went to the kitchen for food, or a hidden note for him to find before he went to bed for the night. But after spending ten minutes searching the room, he was disappointed that he didn't find any more notes. But he pushed the disappointment aside, shucked everything but his boxers, and crawled into bed.
     Where he was exhausted not too long ago he now found himself tossing and turning. He was wide awake and could not see sleep in his near future whatsoever. And after a few more minutes of restlessly trying to relax enough to sleep, he realized exactly why he was suddenly so unsettled. It was Dean.
     As an angel, Cas didn't need to sleep, but now that he was human apparently it was necessary. And since he first became human a few days ago, this had been his first time without Dean, his first night going to bed without having spoken to the hunter, or even just as much as passing him by in the bunker. And his smell… it was comforting to Cas, Dean's scent always calmed him, even as an angel. But here in his own room, in his own bed, he had nothing of Dean to bring him that calm.
     He grunted in frustration as he was still not able to relax, violently tossed the blankets off of him, and stormed towards the door, "As Dean would say, 'screw this!'"
     He threw his bedroom door open and marched down the hallway in nothing but his boxers, then barged his way into Dean's room. Dean's scent instantly hit his nose and he could already feel himself relaxing. And without even so much as a second thought he walked over and got into Dean's bed.
     He pulled the blankets over him and snuggled into the pillow. Dean, it was all Dean, it all smelled like Dean, it was comfort and home. God, he missed Dean.
     He laid there for a while, eyes closed just taking deep breaths, though he had no intention of sleeping there. He couldn't imagine Dean would be too happy when he came home from the hunt tomorrow morning and found Cas passed out in his bed. But he figured he could stay there for a little bit longer before he went back to his own bed. So he rolled over onto his stomach and stretched out on the bed, his arm finding its way under the pillows, and his fingers hit something. He grabbed it and pulled it out, finding a full sized piece of paper. He was about to put it back, sure that it was something personal to Dean if he had hidden it there, but in the dim glow of Dean's digital clock on the bedside table, he saw his name at the top.
     He quickly turned on Dean's lamp and sat up to read the new note, and it would be an understatement to say he was only a little excited about it. "Cas, I wasn't sure if you'd come in here or not, I was hoping you would. And I know you'll probably think you have to go back to your own room, but you don't, you can stay if you want, you don't have to leave. So just lay back, relax, and go to sleep, okay. I'll come wake you up in the morning when I get back from the hunt. Good night, Cas, I…"
     Cas squinted at the bottom of the paper, Dean had written something but scribbled it out completely. Then it looked like Dean tried again, "I… Cas…" Then more scribbles, and more, until he was at the bottom of the page.
     Cas wanted to know what he had written, what he had wanted to say that he was too scared to. Maybe he could tell if he turned it over…
     "There's more," he whispered to himself then read the rest.
     "Screw it. I love you, Cas. I hope you see this side of the note before you go to sleep, and I can't wait to get home so I can tell you that in person. Sweet dreams, Cas."
     He was stunned, speechless, his brain had even turned off. Dean loved him, and now that was going to be all Cas could think about. His heart was fluttering, he was anxious with anticipation, and all he wanted was for Dean to be home already so he could say it back. How was Cas supposed to sleep now?!
     But eventually he did sleep, with thoughts of Dean's confession on his mind and clutching the note close to his chest.
~~~~~~~~~~~
     "Man, I don't know why we couldn't have just grabbed a room at one of the many motels we passed on the way here," Sam complained as they grabbed their bags from the back of the car, "I'm exhausted."
     Well, that was a lie, Sam did know why. He also knew why Dean was practically running through the garage and down the stairs, "Dude, where’s the fire. Slow down."
     "I'm just tired too, wanna head right to bed."
     "You don't want to stay up for a beer?" He asked, though he knew the answer, he just wanted to see what Dean would say, "Celebrate taking down that nest?"
     "Nah, I'm just gunna go to bed, I'm beat, see ya in the morning."
     "Yeah, see ya," Sam waved him off and watched with a smirk as Dean practically ran through the bunker towards the rooms. He knew Dean wasn't as tired as he was trying to make it out to be, he had seen Dean running around the morning before, placing notes around the bunker and setting things up for Cas all day. He also knew about the little confession note that Dean had left in his bedroom in hopes that Cas would find.
     He had caught Dean writing it just before they left, and was able to catch a sneak peek over his shoulder without Dean noticing he was there. Sam also knew that Cas had most definitely already found that note, where he knew Dean wasn't sure if he would. But it was no news to Sam that if Cas was in fact in Dean's room, it would not have been the first time he caught Cas sneaking in there to grab a sweater or blanket of Dean's to take to his own room. He was just glad that these two were finally going to get over themselves.
~~~~~~~~~~~
     Dean was just standing, frozen, outside his bedroom door. He was nervous, to say the least. There was no guarantee that Cas would be in there, or that he had seen the note he hid. He was just running off of hope that he had been right in thinking that his missing clothes and blankets had been taken by the ex angel, that maybe he had been taking them for a reason, and that his confession would be taken the way he was hoping it would.
     He looked down the hallway towards Cas's room, but the door was closed. All he could do was hope that his little hunches were right, and that when he opened this door he would find Cas on the other side.
     Slowly, he reached his hand out and turned the handle. He was holding his breath, his whole body felt numb, and when he peeked his head in his heart went into overdrive. Cas was in fact there, asleep in his bed, the blankets resting low on his hips showing off his toned back.
     Dean tried to pull himself together a little bit, to calm down so he didn't wake Cas. He was still recovering from losing his grace and needed as much rest as he could get. So he quietly slipped inside and closed the door as softly as he could.
     He placed his bag at the bottom of the bed, all the while keeping his eyes on Cas, worried that if he woke him he'd spook and leave in a panic. But thankfully he was still sound asleep. So he removed his shirts and pants and almost in slow motion, he crawled into the other side of the bed beside Cas.
     He didn't touch him or get too close once he was under the covers with him. Dean was thrilled that everything he had thought and hoped for, was currently laying right across from him in his bed. So he decided to just soak it in for a few minutes, to just lay there and adore Cas, just stare at him for as long as he could before he could feel sleep starting to take over.
     Just before he closed his eyes, he ran the back of his hand over Cas's slightly stubbled cheek, then he laid back against his pillow. Then suddenly Cas shifted beside him and moved until he was practically right on top of Dean. He tucked his head under Dean's chin, tangled their legs together, and snuggled as close as he could get.
     Dean just smiled, as happy as he had ever been in that moment, and wrapped his arms around Cas. They laid like that for a minute before Cas moved his hand from where it was rested on Dean's chest, and a second later, he brought it back up and stuck the entire pile of sticky notes he had collected all day to Dean's forehead. Dean chuckled, shaking Cas on his chest who also laughed. Then he brought his hand up again and placed the confession note over Dean’s heart where his hand had just been resting.
     Dean grabbed all the notes and placed them on the bedside table, then opened the drawer to reach in and grab the pad of sticky notes and wrote out another one. He laughed as he peeled the note off the pad and moved his hand between them to stick it over Cas’s heart. Cas tucked his chin down to read the note upside down and smiled from ear to ear, “Property of Dean Winchester.”
     “At least I hope,” he said, laying his hand over Cas's where it still rested over his heart.
     "I love you too, Dean," Cas spoke into Dean's neck, drawing mindless circles over Dean's heart.
     Dean moved his hand over to Cas's chin and lifted his face up to his. "I'm glad you found my note, I wasn't sure if you'd come in here."
     "I missed you," Cas admitted, "the pillows and blankets smell like you."
     "I missed you too, Cas, a lot. I did everything I could so that I could make it back here tonight so we could be together." He rubbed his thumb over Cas's bottom lip, then asked in an almost whisper, "Can I…"
     Cas nodded, his nose rubbing against Dean's as he did, and Dean leaned in closing the gap. He touched his lips to Cas's and kissed him softly, sucking lightly on his bottom lip. It was slow, and gentle, and perfect, filled with years of love between them and Dean couldn't think of anything better than this. He had never been happier.
     When they finally pulled apart, Dean pulled Cas against his chest again, tucking him perfectly against his body as he was before, running his fingers up and down his back. Then he started thinking, as he was staring up at the ceiling, with Cas finally in his arms, and as usual his brain started running wild. He suddenly became nervous and began shifting under Cas.
     Cas felt it, knew Dean well enough by now to know exactly what was going on, so he just rubbed his hand over his bare chest. It might have been easy enough to write it down on paper, but Cas knew Dean would struggle with actually saying it out loud. But eventually, with the soothing motion of Cas's hand on his chest, he managed to get it out.
     "I… I love you, Cas, I really love you, so much."
     Dean leaned down and placed a gentle kiss on Cas's forehead and he smiled, tucked himself tighter under Dean's chin, "I love you too, Dean, and I'm glad you came back tonight."
     "Me too," he kissed him again, then wiggled to settle back into the bed and closed his eyes, "good night, Cas."
     "Good night, Dean."
A Destiel Proposal
Summary: Dean overthinks whether he should propose to Cas or if it’s a dumb idea. Dean talks to Rowena about it. Will Cas say yes? (Of course, he says yes). Bonus Samwena at the end.
Dean swore that everywhere he went there were people talking about being married, getting engaged, and even now, his computer showed him an ad for Tiffany & Co. rings out of the blue. He let out an exasperated sigh. The universe definitely doesn’t give signs, but it’s starting to look like it does. Would Cas even want him to propose? Being an angel and all, Cas probably thinks the whole marriage thing is stupid. It’s not like they can legally get married anyways with both of them being “dead” according to government records. It’s not like he needs to go down on one knee for Cas to know that he loves him. They’ve been together for over a year now and more than once during late nights, half-asleep, he’s admitted to his love that he wants to be together forever. Despite continuously feeling that the whole thing is silly, Dean can’t stop thinking about maybe making the extra, unnecessary, gesture. I mean, “husband,” does have a nice ring to it.
———
The next day Dean finally got his distraction from all that was “too sappy”. He found a case that seemed promising. Sam insisted on going and he convinced Rowena to come along by saying she can go to the spa one of the victims worked at. As much as Dean liked to hang out with Sam and Rowena, there was no way he was going to be their third-wheel. So Cas rode shotgun as Sam and Rowena got too cuddly in the back of the impala.
———
Dean couldn’t believe his eyes when they got to the motel. Right across the street was a small engagement ring store. But he had more important things to do than think about it. It was time to work.
———
It’s been a day and a half since they got there. Sam and Cas went off to interview someone, leaving Dean and Rowena to work out where the monsters were based. Dean caught Rowena staring at him and met her gaze.
“Dean, are you going to propose to Cas?”
“What?,”Dean blurted, shocked by her question, “what would make you ask that?”
“I’ve lost count of how many times you’ve stared at your left hand since we got here. You know, where one puts an engagement ring. Clearly, it’s on your mind.”
That left him speechless.
She continued, “I mean, I’m sure the jewelry store across the street has got you thinking about it. You’ve been dating for over a year, share a room, and have known each other for well over a decade. Are you really going to call him your boyfriend for the rest of your lives?”
Dean rolled his eyes. He once called Cas his “partner” before, but that felt off since he often uses the term when posing as an FBI agent.
“Okay, well, it has been on my mind… It’s stupid though, Cas probably thinks the idea of us getting engaged or married is silly.”
“Dean, I know you’re an idiot, but can you stop being so dumb for a second. Even if he thinks it’s silly, Castiel has grown quite fond of human customs and traditions. I bet he thinks that you don’t want to. Even if it was stupid or whatever you want to call it, that angel would do anything for you. If it makes you happy or if it will possibly make him happy then you should do it. Plus, he’d look so handsome with a ring,” she said with a smirk.
“Well,” he sighed, “I can’t deny that he would look real good with a ring on.”
“So?”
“Hey, I’m just saying when I propose to him, you don’t get to take credit for it. I’ve been thinking about it for a month now.”
Rowena beamed, smiling wide, “Do I at least get to help you pick out a ring?”
“Fine,” Dean reluctantly agreed, a little annoyed but also quite amused, “but we should focus on the case right now.”
“It’ll take five minutes. I’m sure no one will die due to us taking a little break.”
———
It was late at night by the time they finished the hunt. Dean laid down on the bed, freshly clean from taking a shower. Dean played with the ring he bought while Cas took his turn showering. He couldn’t help it. Now that he bought the ring he wanted to propose right away. Sure, a crappy motel room was not the perfect spot and it honestly was quite far from a romantic one, but he was too excited.
Dean hid the ring when he heard the water turn off. He scrolled through his phone until Cas had his pajamas on and tried to cuddle him.
Dean gave him a kiss and got up. Leaving Cas confused. He walked around the bed to stand before the love of his life.
“Hey, Cas. I know we can’t legally get married, and the whole concept of us getting married is quite silly because of that and what not. But I love you so much. I never thought I could love someone the way I love you. I want to be able to call you my husband. And I want you to remember how loved you are by me every time you look down at your left hand and see a ring. I want you to be mine and I want to be yours forever. So, I guess what I’m trying to say is I want to marry you”, Dean gets done on one knee and pulls out the ring, “Castiel, will you marry me?”
Cas jumps up, flying towards him, and kisses him so passionately that Dean almost drops the ring. “Yes”, Cas whispers, his lips against Dean’s. Dean breaks away from another kiss to grab Cas’ hand and put the ring on him.
Time escapes them until they’re out of breath from making out. Cas gets up and pulls out a small black box from his suitcase. Dean’s eyes widen, already watering from overwhelming happiness. Cas gets down on one knee and opens the box that holds a beautiful silver ring. “I was originally going to wait for a more romantic setting, but now seems like the right time. “Dean, will you marry me?”
“Of course”, he huffed out with a laugh, shocked. Dean surprised himself by how giddy he was when Castiel put the ring on him. Dean decided all other questions and conversation could wait until tomorrow, after their post-engagement sex.
———
“Rowena what are you so giddy about?” Sam questioned.
“Well, don’t tell Dean that I told you, but we went engagement ring shopping today! I’m honestly not sure if he’ll propose tonight or wait until later, but I’m excited to see what happens.”
Sam bursts out laughing.
Rowena’s face scrunches, “What’s so funny?!”
“I helped Cas pick out a ring for Dean this morning!”
Rowena falls into him laughing, “Lets play a game! Let’s bet on who we think will propose first?”
“Well, Cas wants to actually plan something nice, much nicer than a motel room, so I might place my bet on Dean’s impulsiveness.”
“We can’t bet on the same person”, she responds rolling her eyes.”
“Well, I can think of another fun game we could play.”
“What’s that?”
“Whoever gets undressed first wins.”
“Prepare to lose.”
“I’d love to.”
Chapter two:
     An hour later Dean was standing in front of Castiel's door again, though this time slightly more nervous then he was before. He had finally agreed to go out with him, to at least give Dean a chance to get to know him, and for him to get to know Dean. It was all he had wanted since the first moment he saw Castiel, and now that he had it, he felt like he was going to throw up.
     He took a breath to try and steady his raging stomach and rang the doorbell before he could turn and run, and Castiel's two brothers answered the door.
     "Dean! Come in!"
     The one with the accent reached out and took Dean by the arm and pulled him inside, the other instantly grabbing at Dean and looking him over. "You look great, Dean-o! Cassie will be ready in just a minute."
     And as if on cue Castiel came walking down the stairs, a picture of heaven in Dean’s eyes. When he reached the bottom he didn't even have words to say as he stood in front of Dean, and it was one of Castiel's brothers who nudged him out of his trance.
     "You look great, Cas!" And he did, all done up in a tight pair of black jeans with a light blue button up, hair mussed just right.
     "As do you, Dean."
     "Doesn't he though!" Balthazar stepped forwards with Gabriel and both started grabbing and pulling at Dean again, "He's so handsome, Castiel, I'm a little jealous!"
     Dean blushed, and Cas stepped towards him to bat his brothers hands away, "I don't know if they introduced themselves or just groped you, but it was probably the latter. These are my brothers, Gabriel and Balthazar. Sometimes they don't know how to keep their hands to themselves."
     "Hi, nice to meet you both," Dean shook their hands, then turned back to Castiel, "you ready?"
     He eyed Dean for a moment then turned to his brothers, "Are you sure you're okay to watch him? He's never been without me this late at night."
     "He'll be fine, Cassie," Gabriel assured, "don't worry and just have fun with Dean."
     Cas looked between Dean and back to the stairs a few times, giving Dean an apologetic look, "Whenever you're ready, Cas, take your time."
     Cas couldn't help but smile, then looked to his brothers and took a breath, "He's napping right now, but if he wakes up and gives you any trouble just call me and I'll come right back."
     "We will be fine, now go," both Balthazar and Gabriel shooed them out the door.
     "Alright Dean, let's go."
     Cas found himself smiling again when Dean held out his arm for Cas to take and led him down the porch steps and to his car.
~~~~~~~~~~~
     They found themselves at a lovely little diner. Nothing too fancy, but honestly just perfect for their first date. Dean had grabbed them a booth in the back, allowing them some quiet privacy to get to know one another. After they had ordered some food, Dean was the first to start asking questions.
     “So, tell me about yourself, Cas,” he leaned in and crossed his arms over the table, “tell me about your son. What's his name?”
     “His name is Jack, he’s three, as you know, but,” Cas leaned in on the table as well, “Jack is not my biological son.”
     “You adopted him.”
     “Yes,” he nodded, “though it was under horrible circumstances.”
     “My youngest brother’s adopted.” Cas looked up and met Dean's eyes as he explained. “Also not under the best circumstances. My dad’s a cop, and when I was eight and my little brother Sam was four, my dad came home one night with Adam. He was one at the time, and his family had been involved in some kind of accident. I don't remember exactly what, but he had no other family to go to so my dad brought him home, said he could stay with us for a while. And of course we all ended up loving Adam and with my dad being chief of police it was easy for them to officially adopt him a few months later.”
     “That was very honourable of your family.”
     Dean smiled at Cas, “My folks are good people, and we love Adam.”
     “Adam was lucky to have fallen into a family like yours.”
     “As is Jack's case as well,” Dean chuckled, “your brothers seem like the fun uncle types.”
     Cas just shook his head with a grin, “They are crazy, but they all love Jack just as much as I do, and they were there to help me when I suddenly found myself a single parent.”
     “If you want to tell me, you can,” Dean reached a hand over the table and placed it on Cas’s arm, “but if you don't want to then that's fine too.”
     “I hardly think this qualifies as decent talk for a first date.”
     Dean shrugged, “We’re getting to know each other, that includes the good and the bad.”
     “I suppose you're right,” he took a breath then looked up to Dean as he explained, “Jack is the son of a very good friend of mine, her name was Kelly. The two of us had been friends since we were in kindergarten together, best friends, completely inseparable. After we graduated highschool I went straight to university, but Kelly decided to take some time off and travel the world. When we were twenty-two she booked a backpacking trip across Europe. She was supposed to be gone for three months, but she showed up on my doorstep not too long after she left and told me she found out she was pregnant.”
     “It happened on the backpacking trip?”
     Cas shook his head with a shrug of his lips, “I have no idea. Kelly never told me who the father was, or if she even knew herself, and I didn't care. I was going to be there to help her no matter what. So we found her a two bedroom apartment and we spent the next few months after that helping her to prepare for the baby. I helped her get the nursery ready, we had a baby shower for her, I even went to prenatal classes with her. She was just so excited for the baby and so ready to be a mother.”
     “You guys were really close,” Dean gave Cas’s arm a squeeze and Cas laid his hand over Dean’s.
     “We were, she was like family to us.” As he continued on with the story Cas found himself thoughtlessly stroking his fingers over Dean’s knuckles, it was comforting and grounding. “When Kelly went into labour she was at our house. We were in the backyard sitting by the pool when it happened and instantly I knew something was wrong. I know childbirth is a painful experience but it was different, she was in more pain then she should have been. So we rushed her to the hospital and the doctors allowed her to bring me into the delivery room. She wasn't in labour for long before she gave birth to Jack, and he was only in her arms for a few moments before alarms started going off and I could tell she was fighting unconsciousness.
     She suddenly handed me the baby and told me she wanted me to make sure I was the one who took care of him, that I needed to be there for him and make sure he had a good life. She told me I had to be his father. I didn't know what to say, and just before she passed out she called a nurse over and told her that the baby's name was to be Jack Novak, my last name.”
     “She knew,” Dean stated with a nod.
     “Yes, I think she knew, just as I did, that when she went into labour that there would be complications with Jack’s birth. And as the doctors were examining her and trying to solve the problem, she knew there was a chance that she wasn't going to make it.”
     “It was a smart move,” Dean had since taken Cas’s hand in his own and was now running his fingers over Cas’s knuckles soothingly, “giving the baby your last name meant you wouldn't be denied custody even though you're not blood.”
     “And that's exactly what the doctors told me,” he nodded, not able to look Dean in the eyes anymore, “because of what Kelly did before she died, I was immediately given custody of Jack and child services was never really involved.”
     “Did they find out what the complications were?”
     He shook his head, “After they took her to surgery I was left standing in the room, holding a  baby, no clue what to do, and not too soon after the doctors came back in and told me that they did everything they could but she just faded. They don't know why the complications occurred or how, but there was nothing they could do. And so I was suddenly left with a baby, a single father in less than twenty-four hours.”
     “Well, she chose the right man for the job,” Cas looked back to Dean and he flashed him a small smile, “she knew she could count on you to take care of Jack.”
     “I would have done anything for her,” Cas lifted his free hand up to wipe the small tear trying to escape his eye, “and now I would do anything for Jack.”
     “Does Jack know about Kelly?”
     “I've told him about her, shown him some old pictures,” he nodded, “I didn't think I should dishonour her by pretending she never existed.”
     “That's for the best,” Dean agreed, “he deserves to know who his mom was, she sounds like she was an amazing person.”
     “She was, and I miss her every day, but I know she watches over Jack,” he smiled, then asked, “does Adam know about his parents?”
     Dean nodded, “When he got older my parents told him about them. My dad pulled some old pictures from their files at the precinct, and they took Adam to visit their graves. He still goes occasionally, but he was too young to even remember them when they died. We’re they only family Adam has ever known.”
     “And you've all lived here your entire lives?”
     “Born and raised,” Dean smiled wide, “I can't imagine moving out of Lawrence. When did you guys move here? Before meeting you at the park that day, I had never seen you or your brothers around.”
     “We moved here when Jack was six months old. Our house was already cramped enough as it was with myself, my dad, and my three brothers all living together, and with a baby added in it was just not doable. So we left Ohio and moved here, bought a house with enough space for all of us.”
     “You have three brothers?” Dean was staring at Cas with furrowed brows, “I've met two, Gabriel and Balthazar.”
     “The third brother you haven't met yet because he works with my dad at his construction company, they are both always out late, his name is Gadreel. He's the youngest, Gabriel is the oldest, then Balthazar, then myself.”
     “And Gabriel and Balthazar, what do they do?”
     “Gabriel owns a bakery in town, his store has been doing well so he only goes in when they need him to,” Cas laughed as he looked up and saw Dean practically drooling over the table, “I’m sure he would love it if you taste tested for him. And Balthazar owns a nightclub downtown, so he usually leaves around eleven and comes home early morning. And I work mostly from home as an accountant for my dad's company, that way I can take care of Jack.”
     “First off, you guys are all so successful!” Cas smiled triumphantly, “And second, any time Gabriel needs a taste tester, and I do mean any time, sign me up!”
     Castiel laughed, “I will make sure he knows. And what do you and your family do, Dean?”
     “Dad still works as chief of police, my mom has never worked, she always stayed home and took care of us. Sammy, the middle child, is working towards becoming a big shot lawyer, and Adam, the youngest is in med school. As for me, I’m nothing special,” Dean shied away, '' I work with my uncle as a mechanic at his shop. I was never really one for school, so no hot shot job for me.”
     Cas shrugged, “Lawyers and doctors are good jobs, but mechanics are extremely attractive.”
     Dean perked up at that, squeezing Cas’s hand that he was still holding a little tighter, “You think so?!”
     Cas leaned in and smirked, “Do you wear a blue jumpsuit and come home a little dirty sometimes?”
     Dean just nodded.
     Cas leaned in a little further as he winked and whispered, “Much sexier than any doctor or lawyer I know.”
     He couldn't help it if he blushed a little, or a lot, at Cas’s words, and just after that their food arrived. With one last wink sent Dean’s way, and a deeper shade of blush covering his cheeks from it, the two of them ate their food and continued their night locked in conversation.
~~~~~~~~~~~
     Dean pulled up to Cas’s house and parked the car, then he jumped out and ran to the passengers side to open his door for him and help him out.
     “Thank you,” Cas smiled and allowed Dean to take his hand and walk him to the front door.
     “So,” Dean began as he shifted from foot to foot while they stood on the porch, “did you enjoy the night?”
     “I did, and,” Cas sighed, turning to look at the door then back to Dean, “as much as I love Jack, it was nice to have a night out, and maybe spending some time without me will be good for him.”
     “Does that mean we get to do this again?” Dean asked, a glimmer of hope in his eyes.
     Cas smiled, “I would very much like to, but… but this has to go slow, Dean. I do have Jack to worry about and no matter what he always comes first.”
     Dean reached down and took both of Cas’s hands in his, “It’s no problem Cas, we can work this at your pace. And as for Jack, whenever you're ready I would love to meet him. If we are going to make this work between us, because I really like you Cas, then I want Jack to like me too. He's as much a part of this as we are.”
     “It means a lot to hear you say that, Dean,” he breathed a sigh of relief, “part of the reason why I haven't dated since Jack came into my life is because I was always worried that no one would see him in that way, as a part of the relationship, and I won't have him neglected.”
     “He won't be, not while im around,” Dean smiled.
     “You are a wonderful man, Dean Winchester,” Cas pulled on Dean's hands and brought him closer, “I am glad you persisted and convinced me to go out with you tonight.”
     “Me too, Cas.”
     The two leaned in further, close enough now for their noses to be touching, but Dean waited for Cas to take the lead. This was at his pace afterall and Dean was going to make damn sure he didn't do anything to push Cas away.
     “Good night, Dean.”
     “Good night, Cas,” and it was Cas who tilted up and closed the gap, placing a sweet kiss on Dean's lips.
     It didn't last long, but it was more than enough for Dean at the moment, and when they parted he couldn't help the face splitting grin that covered his face as he watched Cas walk inside.
     “Call me tomorrow,” Cas said, turning back once he was inside.
     “I will,” and Dean was already counting down the seconds until he could wake up and make a second date with Cas.
~~~~~~~~~~~
     No sooner than Cas was able to close and lock the door was he very quickly bombarded by all three of his brothers.
     “How did it go?!” Balthazar was practically jumping on the spot waiting for an answer.
     “Brother, I was surprised to find out from Gabriel and Balthazar that you went on a date tonight. Who was it with?”
     Castiel turned his attention towards Gadreel, “I was with Dean Winchester, he’s lived in Lawrence his whole life, and the date went well. We… we are going to go out again.”
     Gabriel was the one to freak out this time, practically squealing, “Aren't you glad we told you to give him a chance!”
     “I am,” he blushed, “but how was Jack while I was gone?”
     “He was fine, brother,” Gadreel answered, “when I got home he was still napping, and when he woke up he did ask where you were, but he settled with watching TV until bedtime. He's sleeping now.”
     “I'll go check on him and then I am going to head to bed myself,” Cas quickly hung his coat then began up the stairs, “and thank you all for watching him tonight.”
     “Any time, Cassie!”
