#price revolution
Note
I’m the Middle Ages, we’re their likely any instances where the local “lord” (or equivalent) was poorer than some of the people under his lordship, like a landed knight being poorer than the local wealthy yeoman? I suppose, if so, intermarriage would be the likely resolution?
So if you look through my tag on "genteel poverty," you can certainly see that this was a phenomenon that cropped up during the Late Middle Ages and really took off during the Early Modern period due to the price revolution. However, it might be more likely to happen with regards to the local wealthy merchant than the local yeoman, since it was easier for the upwardly mobile to make their fortune in commerce than in agriculture.
Intermarriage was one resolution, being forced to gradually sell off land was another, but in moments of broader crisis other options like burning down the manor house or the house of the uppity merchant also became possibilities. People did have a way of taking advantage of larger phenomena to settle local scores.

"You'd like Freedom, Truth, and Justice, wouldn't you, Comrade Sergeant?' said Reg encouragingly.
'I'd like a hard-boiled egg,' said Vimes, shaking the match out.
There was some nervous laughter, but Reg looked offended.
'In the circumstances, Sergeant, I think we should set our sights a little higher--'
'Well, yes, we could,' said Vimes, coming down the steps. He glanced at the sheets of papers in front of Reg. The man cared. He really did. And he was serious. He really was. 'But...well, Reg, tomorrow the sun will come up again, and I'm pretty sure that whatever happens we won't have found Freedom, and there won't be a whole lot of Justice, and I'm damn sure we won't have found Truth. But it's just possible that I might get a hard-boiled egg."

that "what's the most expensive piece of clothing you own" poll going around is exactly why i wouldn't trust any of yall with a guillotine bc a couple hundred dollars is a very reasonable price for a well-made and heavy duty winter coat, especially if it's real fur. short of teleporting into a utopian future where ethical and sustainable fashion also comes at a rock bottom price point i would love to hear your alternate proposals

I had cocoa and a hard-boiled egg for breakfast, and believe me, it takes a lot of love for the books to get me to eat a hard-boiled egg. May you all have runny eggs with toast cut into soldiers.

How often do trolls kill and/or enslave inhabitants of planets they invade? Do they just kill most of the population and steal the natural resources or do they prefer to force the aliens to work for them? 👀
I tend to think that if an alien species was useful to the empire, there's not much point to the trolls wiping them out--they can set down roots on far-flung planets, but I feel like it's pretty heavily implied that the Mother Grub is only on Alternia, and so it's not like the trolls settling there would have a means to reproduce once their population set up! So it would be in their best interests to,,,, sort of farm other species that were able to reproduce without third-party intervention.
The purpose for their expansion isn't mentioned in the comic, but it doesn't make sense for it to be the land/living quarters itself--troll settlements outside the homeworld are inherently in need of endless refilling, since procreation is off the table! So therefore, I would probably posit that their expansion is for like...resources, and alien tech/innovations they can steal. Garrisons, rather than settlements. Since the vast majority of trolls would be space-faring, not planet-bound, they could also quickly shift to come down hard on any one point in their empire that tried to rise up, and any single planet could pretty easily be culled en masse if controlling the population became too costly to justify.
It's all quite bad! It's pretty impossible to write no-SGRUB troll AUs without also acknowledging that the whole empire is horrific, haha.
I'm assuming by the eyeballs emoji you're wondering about humans, which is not something I'm planning to include in PoF--although I guess having said that I didn't plan to include the rest of the twelve trolls either, and that changed recently, so who knows?
