as always i was thinking about it (thedas art history) and

i think actually the whole chantry situation would be significantly influenced by the fact that they have control over all the tranquil? and the tranquil are... literate, unpaid, tireless, detail-oriented labourers, who will never get bored or cranky or want to quit. so they would actually be like the backbone of how southern thedas makes any kind of printed material, in scriptoriums attached to the circles or whatever?

which is also really convenient for the chantry. since then they have a chokehold on what gets disseminated. any independent groups that make manuscripts or print material would be less efficient, since by necessity, they would need to... pay their scribes and give them days off, and occasionally have them goof up a page and waste time.

and this raises really interesting questions about stuff like the book of shartan and the heretical chant verses being spread around - can people quietly bribe a chantry official to get them to assign a tranquil to copy it out under the table? is there part-time scribe work going on in alienages to keep these texts circulating? do mages (also literate and have access to materials) themselves manage to do this type of thing covertly, or do they have enough loyalty from the tranquil that the tranquil would be willing to lie about it and help them make some contraband?

anyway, THIS is how the popularity of varric's serialized novels, spurring the development of the printing press, and therefore more secular decentralized sources of media, could create a Chantry Reformation Chaos Era, when the chantry loses its grip on information and archives-

Wood Engraving Wednesday

LINDA HOLMES

English wood engraver Linda Holmes (1950-2015) has provided engraved illustrations for three publications by the Lewisburg, Pennsylvania Press of Appletree Alley. One of those books is Printing as Art: William Morris & His Circle of Influence printed in an edition of 150 copies by Juanita Bishop and Appletree Alley's founder Bernard Taylor in 1994. The book presents correspondence held at Bucknell University by William Morris to T. J. Cobden-Sanderson, William Butler Yeats to his sister Elizabeth (Lolly) Yeats (co-founder of the Dun Emer Press and the Cuala Press), and Elizabeth Yeats to Emery Walker, as well as reprinting George Bernard Shaw's essay "Shaw on Modern Typography."

Linda Holmes trained as a journalist with the BBC and became a presenter for the network's Newsnight from 1980 to 1983. In 1985, she and her husband, BBC journalist David Holmes, retired from London to Walpole, in Suffolk. In 1989, Holmes attended Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts (now Camberwell College of Arts) to study wood engraving under Simon Brett and Yvonne Skargon. Holmes enjoyed a 25-year career as both a wood engraver and a painter until her death from pancreatic cancer at the age of 65.

Not sure who needs to hear this, but if you're interested in getting Ranma 1/2 by Rumiko Takahashi, the manga, to read in English, it's still in print, as well as in digital. It was originally a 38-volume series but it was reprinted back in 2014 as a 2-in-1 edition series (kind of like their VizBig series), so it's 19 volumes. If you're having trouble finding it, or only finding the expensive original volumes, try searching 2-in-1 as well.

You can also buy the individual chapters to read on their store/their app, but I wouldn't personally recommend it. Viz will sell the volumes to you digitally, too, but I would personally recommend going to your favorite digital bookstore instead and seeing if they sell it there. It's on places like iOS, kindle, and kobo.

There are also (currently) sales going on with the anime reboot release, at least for the digital versions of the manga, and volume 1 is on sale for $0.99 USD on some platforms.
