adventures in texturing, Fall 2023, part 3: paper leaves???

I will admit, this was my most ambitious (and least successful) of the bunch

my goal was paper cutouts, I wanted the whole thing to feel handmade. So naturally, I cut out a bunch of leaves from paper and scanned them in, cleaned them up in photoshop and used them as masks. I have two main issues with how it turned out: 1) it doesn't feel like paper, and 2) it doesn't feel like forest floor leaves

I have been trying to procedurally generate a paper texture ALL SEMESTER, but to no avail. This will not stop me from trying. I WILL procedurally generate paper, so help me god. This was supposed to be construction paper. This feels like a weird bumpy leather. I think I'm missing that iconic color variation, and the visible fibers. And the colors are too saturated. I think I was fixating too much on the bumpmap. I think I also needed to introduce some more flaws into the cutouts. All the edges are too perfect, too smooth. There are no rips or tears.

I also want to explore more ways of tiling things. I wanted those five-point leaves to feel like virginia creeper. they don't because they're not in a vine pattern. The leaf groups don't clump together naturally. And everything feels sparse.

Despite everything, I'm still happy with how it turned out, especially for doing something so ambitious when I've just started to learn this software. I definitely want to learn more. And I definitely want to revisit this concept.

just thinking about my development of graphic design. even though i'm going to school for animation, I don't get many opportunities to practice graphic design

but the costober prompt list is something I look forward to designing

I designed a graphic for the costober prompt list for the past three years and

i think there's been marked improvement: my usage of space, color, contrast have improved, and I think I'm using pre-existing images in a smarter way. also, I know how to use photoshop now. that's useful

langdon and santos are both right about each other. langdon is right when he calls santos out for her mean streak while speaking to robby and santos is right when she brings her own concerns abt langdon’s suspected drug abuse to robby. like they’re both 100% right and valid in those moments. and i think it gives them this rly interesting dynamic where they’re just…transparent to each other. not WITH but to. as in they see right through the other’s mask even when other people don’t. and they mirror each other like crazy!!! they’re both extremely ambitious, cocky, restless, full of false bravado. but they’re also kind and gentle and sensitive and funny. they’re so alike but they also HATE each other and it is SO fun and entertaining while also speaking to a deeper level of their characters. something something self hatred subconsciously projected outward something something. idk i just think they’re neat and it’d be cool to see an enemies to coworkers who can actually tolerate being in the same room together arc. i need santos to be mean to him and for him to laugh and say something stupid and it’s all good bc the beef has been squashed and santos just shakes her head and walks away

At the start of this project all I wanted was to 'learn how to draw' using comics as a medium and the MDZS audio drama as inspiration.

I've come *very* far from making simple, 3 panel black and white comics, and I truly do intend to go even further. Thank you to everyone who cheered me on throughout 2023, it has been an incredible year in so many ways I never could have imagined. I look forwards to drawing throughout 2024 B*)

While we're here, let's talk about that actually. Slams my hate and anger on the table.

Let's TALK about how Vi and Jinx, and Jayce and Viktor keep saving each other just to live longer enough to HATE each other.

For the longest time, no since forever, Jinx has been unable to pull the trigger on her sister. She gets nervous any time anyone else points a gun at Vi. She holds on to Vi as a lifeline. No matter how deranged Jinx gets, she will never hurt Vi.

Viktor was also the person Jayce abandoned everything for in his attempt to try to revive him. Just for Jayce to go mad and do that.

I'm just. Why are these people always desperately doing everything that they can do for the sake of the other, just to lose them in the process? WHY?!

one of the things that I found particularly interesting in Demigods of Olympus is that it finally gives the best direct comparison we've seen so far between Percy and another character's experiences in terms of academics and particularly ableist discrimination.

The way Zane describes his experiences and what we see in his POV is that, while he is similarly discriminated against for his "atypical" behavior and blame is placed on him, the only sorts of punishments he receives for this are relatively benign, such as an increase in counseling. (It is also notable that Zane is somewhat autistic-coded, such as having the "incorrect" scripts when speaking with adults and Sam explicitly reminding him to remember to make proper eye contact.) Percy, on the other hand, similarly experiences discrimination for "atypical" behavior, but whereas Zane is treated as "too smart for his own good" and given slaps on the wrist, Percy is automatically labeled as aggressive, destructive, and a trouble-maker based on preconceived assumptions about him and is more severely punished, such as being frequently expelled.

We rarely get this level of direct comparison between Percy's experiences and that of another character, particularly such similar experiences, so looking at the differences is really interesting to gauge what their different experiences with ableist discrimination is like - and how it could potentially tie into intersectionality and other forms of discrimination at play for them.

For instance, Zane's parents are generally heavily implied to be middle-class and/or generally financially secure, versus Percy who grew up poor, so it could be classism in combination with ableist discrimination. Alternatively, it could be intersectionality with racial discrimination, as neurodivergent behavior in people of color is significantly more likely to be punished more severely and labeled as aggressive or disruptive behavior due to racist preconceptions - particularly since we know Percy's experiences with ableist discrimination are also somewhat based on assumptions people make regarding his appearance. Both Zane and Percy are racially ambiguous - Zane's appearance essentially being completely unspecified, but Percy at least having some notable details such as having a deep tan complexion. If not racism, it could also be colorism, which in this context often has similar intersectionality. There's a lot of potential options.

It's just very interesting to me! I love having such a direct point of comparison to examine the experiences of two characters within.
