AU where Amy and Professor Gerald swap places with Sonic and Eggman respectively, but during Forces, instead of six months of being tortured, Gerald (who sees himself as a good guy and who wants to conquer the world so he can "protect" people from harm) instead keeps Amy in a very comfortable cell that has everyone one could ask for. He does this so he can convince her to join him, or at least not interfere with his plans.

He makes sure she has her fortune cards, TV (which plays heavily vetted media that doesn't have a message against him, or his own propaganda), video games. He serves good and healthy food, even offering her favorite desserts if she's on good behavior.

Amy, naturally, hates it. She's ashamed that she was captured, scared for her friends' safety, furious that Gerald thinks he can buy her support by treating her nice. Some days, she tries to break free, but Gerald has planned for every contingency. Other days, she plays along, pretends to be a good "guest". Gerald talks to her often, trying to sway her. They have passionate debates about each's point of view. Amy tries to appeal to his emotions, get him to see her side and free her. Gerald tries to use logic to convince her that the world needs a dictator to protect people's happiness. Neither can agree. They both decide to keep trying. For now.

It reaches a head when Amy is told she has a call from her friend. She gets a video call from Cream, who talks about how everyone has surrendered, how Gerald is in control of the whole world. But for some reason, she says she's happy, and she wants Amy to give up so she can join her friends and live in Gerald's new world. It takes Amy a minute, but she realizes the truth: he used advanced A.I. to generate a fake call with Cream to trick her!

That pushes Amy to the point of rage. She swears she's going to find a way to escape. To make sure Gerald's plans fail. She refuses to let him win or to fall for his tricks. She will find a way to beat him, no matter what.

She will be free, and she will see her friends again. He can count on it.

It seems to me that the one and only thing we know about Eggman is that he actually knew his grandfather, that he admired him when he was still a child. Much like Sonic's origin, Eggman's origin is intentionally unclear, if not completely unknown. What do you think Eggman's life was like between his birth and the events of Sonic 1 (or perhaps, his "very first" meeting with Sonic)?

Eggman strikes me as a former businessman. Varying elements of his character have stated he either wants to take over the world or just build "the ultimate amusement park." Sometimes its a city.

Generally, he seeks power. Actual power. Fuel. He is not altruistic with his fuel consumption, either. He's 100% willing and able to subjugate living beings as a power source.

And where does he get the materials? Why isn't he in more trouble with the authorities? If they're willing to arrest and incarcerate Sonic the Hedgehog, the guy who routinely defeats Dr. Eggman, why aren't they going to war against Eggman himself?

Because Eggman is rich, powerful and connected. Where do you think GUN got its robots?

Is it any surprise that these don't look that far off from an E-Series robot?

I imagine the incident on the ARK did not go as planned. The government wanted to cover up Maria's death (and whatever other deaths occurred), as well as cover up what was going on up there at all -- research into immortality and such. They didn't want news of Shadow, or Biolizard, or anything getting out to anyone.

Gerald refused to keep quiet. He descended into madness and planned the extinction of planet earth. Gerald was executed but obviously had a family. That family would need to be paid for their silence. Overnight, the Robotniks became multi-millionaires. Whatever they wanted, they got.

This created the perfect environment for Eggman to become a spoiled brat with infinite resources. Worst of all, he idolized his grandfather, the deadly martyr. I'm sure there were those within GUN that kept very close tabs on Eggman's progress, and they may have even stepped in at some point, hoping to persuade the boy towards a path of "good" at an early age.

Eggman eventually reached a point where he could support himself with his robotics work. Using his family fortune, it blossomed into a massive business. Military contracts were a matter of course.

Eventually he started reaching people who were afraid of the limits he was testing. He was developing dangerous weapons of mass destruction. Delving into the secrets of consciousness. Even dark new sources of energy. He was going too far, and starting to echo his grandfather a little too well.

(Imagine Eggman laying out plans for his space station research facility and somebody from GUN tugging at their collar like "we know how this ends")

But he grew up in a world where nobody had ever told him "no" before. He saw these limits as weakness. A lack of ambition. Every attempt to go around the problem just caused more problems. People started turning their backs on him for being an increasingly dangerous radical breaking the laws of nature.

Eggman came to the ultimate conclusion: if the city won't approve, if the nation won't approve, then go somewhere that will. Even if that means having to build it yourself. Nobody will ever tell him no. And one day, they'll thank him for what he's going to do for this world.

And who's going to stop him? The government running ten year old versions of robots he designed for them?

All he needs now is the location and a power source...

I used to love spending time with him in his lab, watching in awe as he tinkered with all sorts of futuristic devices and regaled me with tales of his latest breakthroughs.

But as I grew older, I began to realize that Grandpa wasn't just any scientist - he was the mastermind behind some of the most diabolical schemes this world has ever seen. It's true that his ambitions ultimately led to his downfall, but I can't help but feel a certain admiration for the sheer audacity of his vision.

Whenever I'm feeling down about another failed attempt at world domination, I find myself turning to one of Gerald's old journals for inspiration. There's something about the way he writes - all those grandiose declarations of his plans to sink his foes into ruin - that makes me feel energized and ready to take on Sonic and his cohorts once again.

Of course, I don't let my admiration for my grandfather show too much. After all, I've built my own reputation as an evil genius, and I can't have anyone thinking I'm just trying to ride on his coattails. But between you and me, diary, I can't help but feel a certain kinship with the man who paved the way for my own scientific ambitions.

Continuing the Amyswap AU (better name pending) that I've mentioned before, I have a few ideas on how to handle the Sonic Adventure 2 changes, especially Maria and Shadow.

Firstly, since Maria is so tied-up with Mainverse Gerald's story, I've decided that she's being changed so she can be an active player in the story to a degree. Instead of having died 50 years ago, she's a kid/teen who's still alive presently, being Gerald's niece. She's still sick, and is in danger if she doesn't get cured. That's part of Gerald's reasoning for conquering the world; he wants to make a perfect, safe world so that when she gets cured, she'll have a world worthy of her. Maria would be horrified by the lengths he goes for her, and could possibly choose to join Team Amy if she learned the truth.

Shadow actually swaps places with a surprising face: Sage! Since Sage was created by Eggman and Eggman swapped with Gerald, it only makes sense that their creations would swap too. Sage is a hedgehog created thanks to a combination of the Black Arms DNA, powerful technology, and studies of the Hidden Palace Zone mural depicting a future Amy. Sage was made to help Eggman conquer the world, but due to G.U.N.'s raid on the Ark, Eggman's death, and being captured on Prison Island, this never came to pass. Gerald would later find her and recruit her to help with his cause. Cue Amy Adventure 2...

Rouge's place is taken by none other than Knuckles. Knuckles is a treasure hunter who believes in keeping powerful artifacts out of the hands of those who would abuse them, as well as in the hands of the cultures they belong to. Tricked by Professor Gerald, he comes to the conclusion that the professor is gathering Chaos Emeralds so he can disable the ARK once and for all. Of course, Gerald says he needs the Master Emerald to commence with his plan. As a result, he ends up in a conflict against the Master Emerald's guardian, Rouge the Bat...

I think this would be an interesting way to turn the table on the typical plot. Sage has a very different perspective than Shadow, Maria being around would make things unexpected, and Knuckles has a chance to show off those treasure hunting skills he mentioned back in Sonic Riders!

"Shadow was made based on Gerald studying the ancient echidna prophecy in Hidden Palace Zone." careful, you're getting fandom theories and headcanon mixed with the actual text of what you're talking about. there's never been a mention of Gerald working from Hidden Palace- all the ruins we see in SA2 are SA1 ruins. Even if Ian Flynn now retcons that in in some supplemental material, it'll still be a posthoc retcon.

Not to be rude or anything, but I don't work for Sega or IDW or anyone official.

It's pretty clear Shadow is based on the look of Super Sonic. We never see Gerald investigate any ancient echidna stuff, but Maria does tell us some things about how the Artificial Chaos were created in the Shadow the Hedgehog flashback levels, confirming the obvious: that they were based on "the God of an ancient culture." (So, you know, Artificial Chaos were based on Chaos)

Now, what we see, both in Hidden Palace and Lost World, are murals depicting two things: a prophecy foretelling a fight between Eggman and Super Sonic, and Perfect Chaos. We never see any murals of lower forms of Chaos, but the Artificial Chaos are obviously based on something below Perfect Chaos.

When Chaos transforms for the first time, Eggman mentions "it's just as the stone tablets predicted." So there was possibly information on what lower forms of Chaos looked like. Where did he get them? Did he inherit them from Gerald?

Maybe he got them from The Lost World ruins. I mean, it's right outside of Final Egg, so maybe. Final Egg is also in the heart of a vast jungle, and from within Lost World itself, we can even see more ruins far in the distance. And if Eggman got them from Gerald's estate, who even knows where he got them from.

So there was detailed documentation about these things probably in multiple locations from both before and after the event that nearly wiped out Knuckles' ancestors and lead to the creation of Angel Island. After all, Lost World and Final Egg (plus the jungle surrounding it) aren't part of Angel Island -- only Icecap and Red Mountain are. (And a datamined list suggests Mushroom Hill was originally going to be represented in some form, too)

Through deduction, we can assume there's probably more than one Super Sonic mural. Maybe by different artists! Maybe even statues! Just like there are many different ancient hieroglyphs depicting Anubis in different shapes, styles, and forms.

It's splitting hairs. Live a little. It is an extremely educated guess that Shadow the Hedgehog is meant to be an interpretation of Super Sonic, wherever in ancient echidna culture that came from. The suggestion is pretty clear that Gerald was looking at that material around the same time both Biolizard and Shadow were created. It makes a hell of a lot more sense than "aliens from space made a blood pact."
