It seems Ragatha meant to make that comment discreetly to Pomni, but oh my word, Jax's expression when he heard that... 😰

Like, he clenched his fists so tight and just-- dang. She struck a chord. I've seen him ticked off over petty things but this is the most furious I've ever seen Jax.

Feeds into that theory of "Jax and Ragatha have history and beef between them" and this is a moment of personal betrayal towards Jax

More than likely it was this friend that he lost: the person that abstracted before Kaufmo:

—but ohhhhh man. The amount of lore in this episode went crazy.

I also love how Pomni's witnessing that little incident between Jax and Ragatha ultimately seemed to start their odd friendship.

Surprisingly, Pomni is now the most mentally stable and emotionally healthy person in this group. She's also very empathetic. Maybe that's why Jax was drawn to her.

so! a page! this was a revisiting (for me) of an old old old. OLD. page I drew over ten years ago immediately after seeing a local production of the musical. usually when I revisit and edit ancient drafts, I gut a lot of it in the process of re arranging the insides, but this was one where I was like: AH. I see your vision, past self, now I can articulate it and draw shoes.

someday I'm going to find the time to get the whole thing on paper (this was also a color palette test page! I still want a noir-ish influence, but I'm debating sticking to a classic black and white only or leaning into something like this. much to think about........) until then though! a confrontation inside a house goes wrong! takes place moments after this scene.

Polka's Abstraction (2025): Storyboards 1-4

After unknown events that lead to Caine's shutdown of the Circus' software, Pomni and friends are on the brink of escape! But one member of the troupe has other ideas, and changes his fate for the worst...

The concept of this whole project was to explore a different avenue of abstraction, which happens when one loses all sense of identity and hope in leaving. I'd say not wanting to leave, but in fact staying forever; would certainly count as losing your identity. You are now, and always will be- a part of the circus...just as you wished.

It's sketchy, it's already a little outdated, it's flawed; and it's mine 💕 Thank you all for joining me in this journey! Hopefully one day it can be fully completed as an animatic!

Khokhlosmic

For my capstone, I tasked myself with exploring Russian folk art styles such as Khokhloma and Gzhel through various layers of abstractions, examining my own tenuous heritage.

Installed last week, Khokhlosmic is up in the Law Warschaw Gallery at Macalester until May 17th!

Khokhlosmic Seas, digital (Krita), April 2025

This piece is a new edition of a piece from last October, Caustic Seas (used for Tennotober 2024 and Chanter Genesis), incorporating abstracted leaf and berry forms alongside extra edits. The previous version can be found here.

Lone Bloom, oil on canvas and photo print, December 2024

This piece was originally made for a painting class last semester, combining loose ideas from Zhostovo, Khokhloma, and Gzhel. More about it can be found here.

Khokhlosmic Entanglement, digital (Krita), March 2025

Originally a style exploration sketch, later in the month I returned to it to get it polished for the show. The original sketch can be found in this post.

I made this piece largely on the flight to Baltimore in the lead up to my dad's spinal surgery. Though that trip was extremely stressful, I was surprised and pleased to get this piece out of it. It can also be found in this post.

Originally just sketched screen prints made for a printmaking class last semester, they grew on me over time and felt like good inclusions in the show for further establishing the themes of duality.

Made for a ceramics class, I since added wire and more yarn. The piece uniquely also explores the other side of my heritage, taking the form of a spine section. The previous iterations of this piece can be found here.
