The tomb of Askia Muhammad I is the most famous edifice in the city of Gao, an important regional trading center and one-time capital of the Songhay empire. The complex-which includes the pyramidal tomb itself, two flat-roofed mosque buildings, the mosque cemetery, and an open-air assembly ground - was built following Askia Muhammad's return from his pilgrimage to Mecca. Askia Muhammad's rule, which enforced a more orthodox form of religious practice, is associated with a golden age of both Islam and architecture in the Songhay empire. Built of earthen bricks, the mausoleum was possibly created shortly after Askia Muhammad's death, in 1538, yet as several scholars have noted, there is no evidence that the emperor was actually buried in this structure.

Architecture historian Labelle Prussin has argued that tombs, as the memorabilia of funerary custom, are "the most revealing for African architectural history" because they are the "quintessential human statement of ritual behaviors in space and time, of belief systems and human values. "As West Africa's largest architectural monument, this burial complex combines principles of indigenous Songhay religious beliefs with references from Islamic cosmology. Its design may be situated within the important Saharan tradition of erecting prominent ancestral tumuli, or tomb mounds, over graves, a practice dating to before the first millennium B.c. Here that essential mound structure was incorporated into a new mosque idiom, which also includes the tomb, a minaret, and a sacred enclosure.

The imposing tomb itself takes the form of a truncated pyramid surmounted by steps around its perimeter. In establishing a link between sky and earth, this spiral "stairway to the gods" has been compared to certain Mesopotamian monuments, such as the early mastabas and later ziggurats. The structure's heavy mass and conical volume is punctuated with protruding timbers that echo the minarets of the Sudanese style, particularly those of Timbuktu's Djinguereber Mosque and earlier tombs of Malian kings. With its multiple layers and structural combinations of threes, fours, and sevens, the mausoleum incorporates references to Islamic numerology while also drawing upon the forms and customs of proto-Songhay ancestral tumuli and Manding masonry practices.

The current appearance of the tomb seems to differ from its original design, which as of 1859 was documented as reaching twenty meters in height, almost double the present elevation. As with the mosques of Timbuktu and Jenne, the monument was likely constructed in several stages: the first, a vast sepulcher in the form of a pyramid; the second, involving the articulation of three telescopic levels on its four cardinally oriented peripheral faces; and the third, the cutting of a ramp-stairway in order to provide easier access to its summit. The resulting monument embodies "establishment" architecture in Wes t Africa, constituting in form and scale "a statement of the highest political order".
