“What to Expect from God When Life Sends You the Unexpected” By Leslie Newman:

“Sometimes life sends you the unexpected. It’s an unexpected that you didn’t ask for and you don’t want. It came out of nowhere. Perhaps it’s a physical problem, illness, or the death of someone you loved very much. Perhaps it’s an issue between you and a friend. Maybe your child is making bad choices, or you have a spouse that has abandoned you. The list could go on and on, could it not? It just seems like too much, doesn’t it?

When these things happen, there’s often no real answers in sight to explain the whys and the what ifs. It can be so painful and agonizing. But one thing we do have is the truth. And the truth tells us that we have a God who is with us, who cares deeply and who walks alongside us in the most difficult of circumstances.

When you are walking that long and lonely road through the unexpected, here’s something you can rely on. God is always who He says He is.

These verses give us just a few glimpses into the character of God.

1. God is our shield: “For the Lord God is a sun and shield: the Lord will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.” (Psalm 84:11 KJV)

“The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; My God, my strength, in whom I will trust; My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.” (Psalm 18:2, NKJV)

2. God is our helper: “Behold, God is my helper; The Lord is with those who uphold my life.” (Psalm 54:4 NKJV)

“So we may boldly say: “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?” (Hebrews 13:5-6, NKJV)

3. God goes with us: “The LORD is the one who goes ahead of you; He will be with you. He will not fail you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.” (Deuteronomy 31:8, NASB)

“Be strong and courageous; don’t be terrified or afraid of them. For it is the LORD your God who goes with you; He will not leave you or forsake you.” (Deuteronomy 31:6, HCSB)

4. God will provide: “And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:19, NASB)

“His divine power has given us everything required for life and godliness through the knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and goodness.” (2 Peter 1:3, HCSB)

Prayer: Dear Lord, sometimes it just feels like too much. Things are not what we expected, and we don’t understand. But You are a God who walks with us. We know we can rely on You to be who You say You are. And you’ve told us You will never forsake us or leave us. Thank you for loving us that much and help us to know it deep inside our hearts.”

May I be made to inspire and teach my son to read through his future bible with the desire that I long didn't have, for how long have these radiant treasures of verses been unknown to me in my foolishness?

I have dreaded Godly sorrow lately like I have dreaded worldly sorrow - to be avoided, that there must be another way - but Paul here speaking to the church in Corinth is also speaking to the lame like me: he did not speak so as to harm, he did not speak to bully or to cause lasting wounds. His letter was to, and accomplished, turning the people to repentance. I'm now thinking of Psalm 30:5,

"For his anger lasts only a moment,

    but his favor lasts a lifetime;

weeping may stay for the night,

    but rejoicing comes in the morning"

The sorrow that they experienced was for their benefit, and it's not to be the whole of their lives for in Christ there is joy and no more weeping, peace and no more pain.

And what's more, how Paul expresses that he had regret for hurting them. I don't point this out because I think Paul was in any wrong for being harsh, but that he wasn't harsh for the sake of being mean but for love. No one who loves wants to cause pain, but in doing what he had to do and that the Lord saved these people, his regret had been replaced with joy: "No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it." (Hebrews 12:11).

Now I'm not excited to go out and experience sorrow for the fun of it, but I pray that we would have our eyes opened to our sins, our hearts brought to repentance, and that we would not fear the recieving of any discipline and rebuke but properly fear with respect any discipline and rebuke - harsh as they might be. May the good Lord watch over His children, and may we be made more and more into the likeness of Christ.

Absolute Everlastingness

Before the mountains were born / or you brought forth the earth and the world, / from everlasting to everlasting you are God. — Psalm 90:2

The truth is that if the Bible did not teach that God possessed endless being in the ultimate meaning of that term, we would be compelled to infer it from His other attributes, and if the Holy Scriptures had no word for absolute everlastingness, it would be necessary for us to coin one to express the concept, for it is assumed, implied, and generally taken for granted everywhere throughout the inspired Scriptures. The idea of endlessness is to the kingdom of God what carbon is to the kingdom of nature. As carbon is present almost everywhere, as it is an essential element in all living matter and supplies all life with energy, so the concept of everlastingness is necessary to give meaning to any Christian doctrine. Indeed I know of no tenet of the Christian creed that could retain its significance if the idea of eternity were extracted from it. "From everlasting to everlasting, thou art God," said Moses in the Spirit. "From the vanishing point to the vanishing point" would be another way to say it quite in keeping with the words as Moses used them. The mind looks backward in time till the dim past vanishes, then turns and looks into the future till thought and imagination collapse from exhaustion; and God is at both points, unaffected by either. Time marks the beginning of created existence, and because God never began to exist it can have not application to Him. "Began" is a time-word, and cannot have personal meaning for the high and lofty One who inhabits eternity.

Favor Surrounds You

“But let all those rejoice who put their trust in You; Let them ever shout for joy, because You defend them; Let those also who love Your name Be joyful in You. For You, O Lord , will bless the righteous; With favor You will surround him as with a shield” Psalms 5:11-12, NKJV.

We can rejoice and shout for joy because Jesus became your substitute and satisfied the debt of sin. Your sins have been thrown as far as the east is from the west. They truly have. You stand in Christ as righteous as he is, and now a holy God has come near and surrounds you. Like a shield on every side, His favor surrounds you.

Favor is simply God delighting in you because you received His love through His Son. You accepted His Son, and God’s delight is to accept you not based on what you’ve done but grace–the unmerited favor of God. Don’t allow condemnation or guilt to surround you. Favor surrounds you. Don’t allow hopelessness to surround you. Favor surrounds you. Despite what is happening around you, in between all of it and you, in between the enemy’s attacks and you, is the favor of God that will prevail in your life.

Prayer: Father, thank you! I shout for joy over how much you favor me. Help me to understand who I am in you and the favor I’ve received. I say out loud that I am a blessed, forgiven, and loved. No matter the situation, your favor surrounds me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Dear friend,

Habits seem harder and harder to break. Which makes sense. The older I get, the more I become what I've been. The longer I've been doing the same things again and again and again, the deeper the patterns impress upon my heart. The dirt trails I have walked for three decades are now packed earth, paved road, highways.

But just because it's more difficult doesn't mean I should stop trying. Sin habits are still habits. I do them without thinking; they are so ingrained into my being and my soul. And yet, there's the still, small voice, the itty-bitty truth drowned out by routine... Think. Start thinking.

Think about who you are––beloved, saved, sanctified, adopted, made new.

Think about whose you are––child of the king, purchased and pardoned for a purpose, set apart for infinite glory and joy.

Think about why you continue to be––to glory in and enjoy a good God, to know and be known by Him, to reign with Him and be His bride, His body, His child (metaphors for infinite truths).

Think about where you are headed––eternal joy, seeing Jesus face to face.

Think about how you will get there––by faith... and through many dangers, toils, and snares... and carried along by grace and truth and divine power.

And as you think of these things, your affections might shift, even minutely, off course of where they were pushing your soul. And maybe the fires of lust get swallowed up in greater, stronger, divinely directed conflagrations.

Take some Philippians 4:8 pills and let them shape you a la Romans 12:1-2. Eat that bread of the Word and digest it thoroughly and soak in it (Psalm 1:1-3) and absorb every nutrient you can obtain (Psalm 119:11) and wield it powerfully (Ephesians 6:17) against the lies that have shaped you for years. But do it one day at a time, one step at a time, one leg at a time, one breath at a time (Philippians 3:13-14).

And you'll get there, friend.

And I struggle alongside you. It's tough out here. But we have infinite hope in an infinite Savior.

Trusting in the Lord's character allows us to find hope in every situation. It's not just about trusting God to get us through the difficult moments, but fully trusting in who He is, which extends to every moment of life.

So what is God's character? Many things. God cannot be compared to anything else in all creation. He created all things. Therefore, there are some attributes of Christ we can and cannot understand. We can't understand being 'unchanging' or 'all-knowing' ourselves because, as we are finite beings, we are neither. However, His Word tells us these truths about Him so that we may trust the characteristics that are unique to God alone. We can see and acknowledge the truth of His character in the Word and in our own lives.

GOD IS UNCHANGING:

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” —Hebrews 13:8

“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.” —James 1:17

GOD IS FAITHFUL:

“...if we are faithless, he remains faithful—for he cannot deny himself.” —2 Timothy 2:13

“The Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever and his faithfulness to all generations.” —Psalm 100:5

GOD IS ALL-KNOWING:

“He who planted the ear, does he not hear? He who formed the eye, does he not see? He who disciplines the nations, does he not rebuke? He who teaches man knowledge—the Lord—knows the thoughts of man, that they are but a breath.” —Psalm 94:9

GOD IS SOVEREIGN:

“For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.” —Romans 11:36
