Flashback, 2015

   In May of 2014 I got a kitten, who grew to be a scrappy youngster in the winter of 2015. I found this little essay from the day he decided to learn about winter weather the Hard Way.

Feb 15, 2015, So far today we have had:

A) 2am to 5am, domestic animal disturbances as the cats, left inside because of the vicious weather, ‘interact' with each other and Chance. My lips, as I write this, are compressed in a humorless straight line.  

B) 3am Front screen door blows open hard enough to break its springs and crack the doorframe.

C) 7am Woman who didn’t get to sleep enough due to animal and weather disturbances cleans up gigantic freakin’ mess in kitchen. Tired of cleaning the kitchen. Also whiny and grumpy.

D) 7:30am  My husband  (redacted for major grouchiness)

E) 7:35am Daughter gives Father a piece of her mind.

F) 8am Both cows fed, I am just returning from dumping Butthead’s feed in his trough when I hear a nasty feline wail. Anticipating some sort of fight with a stray, I rush behind the tractor to find . . . . Rocky with his tongue stuck (frozen) to the brushhog. Why did he lick the brushhog on the coldest day of the year WHY!!??? He is wailing and struggling and I am wailing and crying as I leap to grab the bucket of warm water I use to clean the cow. Before I could ‘melt’ him, he tugged free. Wailing. Cuddling. I ran back down with a very subdued puddytat in my arms and burst into the house in distress.

G) Cat seems to be recovering fine, resume milking. Leave cows (all three) in barn for a break from the wind. Doris and Fanny are good with staying in, but not happy that I let Butthead join them.

H) Filter milk and set it out to cool down, eat breakfast, and head to Jim’s barn in the truck. Load 2 bales straw and one bag corn.

I) Scatter one bale straw in and under chicken coop. The chickens, who have not had anything to do and have barely moved in several days, burst into frantic and happy action. Finally, someone is in a good mood. There could be interesting seeds or a dead bug in there; they will turn over every piece of straw until they find out.

Bleh. Hrmph. Humbug.
