when are we as a society going to collectively take a step back and recognize the revolutionary nature of punk goes pop. tectonic plates shifted. there were casualties.

this is pretty specific ig but do you know any punk or generally rock covers of pop songs? like from music atm or the last decades, doesn't really matter... tysm
Why yes I do!!!
There is of course the entire ‘Punk Goes Pop’ series — some of my favourite stand-outs from that have gotta be State Champs’s cover of Stitches and Mayday Parade’s cover of Somebody That I Used To Know
Settle Your Scores did some great covers of Natasha Bedingfield’s ‘Unwritten,’ of Lorde’s Royals, and of The Chainsmokers’ ‘Closer’ — the Closer one is a particular fav of mine
As December Falls have a cracking cover of ‘I Think We’re Alone Now’
Broadside released a cover of ‘Friday I’m In Love’ not too long ago
Ages ago The Downtown Fiction did an awesome cover of ‘Fuck You’ by Cee-Lo Green, with this charming video to accompany it:
There’s quite a few YouTubers who do rock covers of pop songs, notably Todd Barriage, Jonathan Young, and Alex Melton
Of course I can’t not mention ADTR’s version of ‘Since U Been Gone,’ an absolutely iconic cover
New Found Glory released ‘From The Screen To Your Stereo Vol. 3’ featuring covers of songs that were prominent in big movies inc. Let It Go from Frozen. To be completely honest, I found this one a bit mid - especially compared to the previous two vols - but it’s certainly there, thought it was worth mentioning
Both Neck Deep and Hands Like Houses have covered ‘Torn’ by Natalie Imbruglia, I personally prefer the Hands Like Houses version, it feels just that bit rockier
And Four Year Strong have an entire cover album ‘Explains It All’ featuring all sorts of cover songs, and imo there’s not a miss among ‘em (She’s So High, Absolutely, and Ironic are prob the highlights though)
So some of them go back a bit, I think Royals is the most contemporary song to be covered among these, but still, hope some of these are able to scratch that itch you’re after!
(Also most of these links are to Spotify, but if you don’t have spoofy then they’re easy enough to find elsewhere, like on YouTube)
Thanks for the ask! 🖤🤘😄
