The Pūteketeke: New Zealand's Bird of the Century.
The votes are in, and after two bruising weeks of voting in New Zealand's Bird of the Century, we have a new champion. It carries its young on its back, which is very cute. It enjoys grunting, growling, and barking, as one does. It possesses an elaborate set of mating rituals, including "the weed dance" and "the ghostly penguin," which is great. It has a colorful mullet—j'adore le style. It has a propensity for vomiting. It is, in other words, a worthy champion. Its name is the Australasian crested grebe, otherwise known as the pūteketeke, and we think you're gonna get on just *great*.

If you want to do your bit to help these beautiful creatures, Forest & Bird ask bird enthusiasts to donate an old predator trap through Give a Trap, or add your voice to their collective call-to-action for birds in New Zealand. You can support Forest & Bird directly right here. In the meantime, we have gathered, for your viewing pleasure, a carefully-curated selection of content in tribute to the top five contenders from the #bird of the century election. Every last one a winner.
Live, love, laugh. Grunt, dance, puke x

November 17, 2023 - Pūteketeke, Kāmana, or Australasian Crested Grebe (Podiceps cristatus australis) A subspecies of the Great Crested Grebe, these birds are found in lakes in parts of Australia and the South Island of New Zealand. They eat mostly fish as well as some aquatic invertebrates. Breeding between September and March, they perform elaborate courtship dances and build floating nests from sticks and water plants attached to branches or reeds. Females lay clutches of five to seven eggs. Both parents incubate the eggs, covering them with weeds when they aren’t incubating and carrying the chicks on their backs after they hatch. The New Zealand population declined to a low of around 200 birds in the 1980s due to introduced predators, habitat loss, and human disturbance from power boating and other recreational activities. Their numbers are currently increasing after conservation efforts.

So, New Zealand is currently holding a vote for Bird of the Century, and local TV show host/madman John Oliver has launched a HUGE campaign to have the Pūteketeke elected as the winner. There are now billboards encouraging people to vote for the Pūteketeke all over the world, from India to France. He and his team even set up a little webpage for the occasion.
Being the easily-amused person I am, I of course went with the funny British man and put the Pūteketeke down as my number one choice. However, even if you don't want this particular bird to win, it's still worth it to look at the rest of the competitors. There's plenty to learn about New Zealand's native wildlife, and you might just find your perfect Bird of the Century champion if you browse around enough.
Voting closes at 5:00 p.m. NZDT on November 12th (about 26 hours from now as of typing), so if you want to participate, do it now!

The thing with John Oliver was fun but damn they're just gonna accept the results as legit? Like that's what we have to live with now?
Side note but I'm glad that the kea got so many votes :)
