Chapter 5

The trio watched as Yuu walked away.

"...He's mad, right?"

"Of course he's mad! Does he look happy to you?!" Ace yelled.

"You two were arguing so much that even the janitor got sick of it and left us."

"Damn it...It was because you started it Ace!"

"Are you pushing all the blame onto me now?!"

"At any rate, you guys might actually get expelled if you continue your argument like this."

"Guh..."

"Then, what can we do? It's not as though we can defeat that monster."

Deuce pondered for a moment.

"Maybe...we should work together." He spoke.

"Ha?? You sure say funny things. There's no way I'll get along with someone like you."

"It's not like I want to work with a loser like you either! But do you have any other ideas?"

"I feel like it's way lamer to get expelled on the first day of school." Grim added.

"The janitor was right. We won't accomplish anything if we keep going on like this."

"...Gaaaahh fine!! We just have to get it done, right! So, do you have any plans on how we are going to defeat that thing together?"

"Currently, no..."

"Hmm..." Even Grim is thinking hard of a way to defeat it.

"...How about, a distraction?" Ace said.

"Huh?"

"Oh, like a scapegoat?" Deuce asked.

"Yeah, we'll have someone to distract the monster and lure him away from the mine, while the rest of us go get the crystal."

"That sounds like a great idea! Then, who's gonna be the scapegoat?" As Grim said so, Ace and Deuce stared at Grim.

The blot monster from before was standing near the entrance, as if guarding it. Until a voice caught its attention.

"Hey, beasty! O-O-O-over here!"

Grim waved his tiny arms while shouting at the top of his lungs, trying to get the attention of the monster.

"Grrrrr... LeaAAAAAAAVVEE!!!"

The blot monster screeched in a distorted, barely comprehensible voice, and went to chase after Grim.

"Gah! It's coming!"

Grim started to run towards the opposite direction from the mine.

"I swear I'll get back at them one day..." He muttered. The blot monster tried to attack, and had almost hit him, but missed.

"Pyah! That punch looks like a knockout if it lands!"

"Go away! Go away!!!"

After running for quite a distance, Grim yelled,

"It's pretty far from the tunnel now!"

Ace and Deuce jumped out from the trees, cornering the monster from behind.

"Ok, I got this! Let's go, Extra Large Tempest!" With a confident grin, Ace casted a wind magic, and at the same time,

"And the Great Grim's Fire Special! Ffgnaaaaaa!"

Grim blew out a ball of fire, which was amplified by the wind magic, forming a fire tornado. It caught the monster inside, and effectively burnt it.

"Guaaaaah!!?"

"How's that! I can even fan Grim's shoddy flames into an inferno!"

"It's not shoddy! Ugh, every word out of your mouth pisses me off!!!"

"Deuce, now!"

"Calm down...Take aim...The biggest, heaviest...thing I know..."

"Come forth, cauldron!"

Out of nowhere, a huge cauldron appeared above the monster. It crashed onto it, its weight forcing it down, no longer being able to move.

"Guaaa!?"

"Got it! Nice work, everyone!" Grim cheered delightedly.

"Hey, look! The monster looks flat as a pancake, just like Ace was earlier!"

"You don't need to bring that up again! Jeez, today just isn't my day."

"Let's go get the magic crystal while that thing can't move."

The trio rushed into the cave as fast as they can.

"!? Waaaaaaaiiitt!!!!"

Trailing back the path, they arrived back at where they found the magic crystal. Amidst the darkness, a single crystal can be seen, shining clearer and brighter than any other minerals in the mine.

"There! A magic crystal!" Deuce exclaimed excitedly.

"Hands oooooooooffff!!"

The blot monster screeched, struggling to break free from the weight.

"Crap! That thing is almost free!"

"Oi, Deuce! Throw some more stuff on it!"

"Eeeh, something heavy!? C-come forth! Cauldron! And, uuumm, ummm, cauldron!? One more, cauldron!"

Deuce continuously summoned the large cauldrons one after another on top of the monster.

"Nnnnguuaa!!"

"Do you know nothing but cauldrons!?"

"Shut up! I'm at my wits' end over here!"

"We got the magic crystal! Let's skadaddle!"

"Roger!"

The trio immediately fled out from the mine.

"That. Is... MIIIIINNNEE!!!"

In an ear piercing voice, the blot monster screamed, as it broke free and got back up.

"You're kidding!? It brushed off all that stuff and came after us!"

"Uuuh... uuughhh...! Give... it ba...ck!!"

"Shoot, it's gonna catch up to us!"

Despite running till their limit, they weren't fast enough to outrun the blot monster. It wasn't long before it caught up to them.

"Give...back...crystal!!!"

With a swoop of a hand, the blot monster caught Deuce, causing him to fall.

"Deuce!!"

COLLECTIVE NUMBERS IN RUSSIAN

In Russian, collective numbers are used to talk about a group of people or animals, or things as a whole (as a single unit). In modern speech we use:

о́ба/о́бе both

двое - two [DVOH-yeh]

трое - three [TROH-yeh]

четверо - four [CHYET-vee-rah]

пятеро - five [PYAH-tee-rah]

шестеро - six [SHYES-tee-rah]

семеро - seven [SYEH-mee-rah]

Using the Russian Collective Numbers

1) With masculine nouns

четверо учеников - four students

трое гостей - three guests

2) With nouns designating children and young animals

двое детей - two children

семеро ребят - seven children

семеро козлят - seven small goats

четверо волчат - seven small wovles

3) With nouns which are always plural

трое людей - three people

двое суток - two days

четверо ножниц - four scissors

4) Collective numbers are not used with feminine nouns (except обе). You should always say две сестры (two sisters), четыре реки (four rivers)
