Just a few weeks before my mom passed away my 23+ year old female leopard gecko (Eublepharis macularis) Diego died too. Ever since I have been trying to figure out what to do with the enclosure that she left behind, and here are some of the ideas that I have come up with:
- Turn it back into the aquarium that it originally was; it could make for a rad freshwater species aquarium of zebra danios and beautiful blue freshwater shrimp, or it could be a second saltwater tank. Right now the thought of entering into another expensive-to-equip aquarium adventure makes me mentally hyperventilate though, especially when I still have yet to finish stocking my Fluval Evo reef tank which I've dubbed Purrling Reef. Sure the thought of a seahorse tank or an angler fish is fun but do I really want to enter into another aquatic pet like that at this time? Probably not!
- Get a small (male) snake! This is the original thing that I wanted to do but my mom wasn't on board with snakes. My dad? He's fine with it. So far the most likely species for me is the Plains Hognose (Heterodon nasicus,) Rosy Boa (Lichinura trivergata,) or the Anthill/Pygmy Python (Antaresia perthensis.) I am really not interested in Kenyan Sand Boas (Gongylophis colubrinus,) and I like that hognoses and rosy boas are both from North America - in fact the plains hognose is native to a few Canadian provinces! (Thankfully not mine though which means that hognoses are completely legal where I live, yay!) Rosy boas are unfortunately hard to find here, and so are pygmy pythons (which are from Australia, and not from the Perth region as their name seems to suggest.) Hognoses are easy to find - but only if you want a fancy colour morph, which I don't. I love the regular wild type morph of hognose but so far I haven't seen any available in Canada. (The fancy morphs are considerably more expensive, like $200+ more at least.)
Considering my hiking hobby a snake who as an adult only needs feeding once every 1-2 weeks and a clean, topped up water dish is pretty ideal. Top entry enclosures like mine aren't ideal for snakes (reaching down to grab them is too much like a bird of prey swooping down on top of them,) but I just need to check myself over how I reach for the snake friend. All three species of consideration are relatively docile, with the hognose being likely the best. Considering Clint's Reptiles and Wickens Wicked Reptiles' enclosure size recommendations I feel confident that Diego's 20 gallon long enclosure would be just fine especially for a male hognose (which is twice the size of the 10 gallon that some recommend.)
A garter snake would fit too however a larger enclosure would be better, especially so that I could keep more than one as unlike most other snakes, garter snakes are social beings who appreciate having garter snake friends.
Why specifically a male snake? Male snakes are significantly smaller than females.
I'm not interested in a tricolour hognose (Xenodon pulcher) as they do not live long enough. (5-8 years at best is ow, especially for an animal that would cost $400+ here. Nope, hard pass.)
- Get another lizard, but not a leopard gecko (nothing against my beautiful late Diego but I simply don't want another leopard gecko.) So far my favourite option for this is the completely gorgeous Schneider's Skink (Eumaces schneider.) At first I really wasn't considering another lizard but watching Reptiliatus' videos of feeding his tokay geckos made me realize that I actually really miss feeding Diego and watching her hunt her crickets. Skinks tend to be personable and friendly; I'm still researching what other options might exist.
Bonus points for ease of care for my dad whenever I'm away. He's probably more comfortable dumping a bunch of crickets into a lizard's home than feeding dead rodents to a snake if I am gone for a long time as I would be should I succeed someday in returning to Scotland to finish the Scottish National Trail (and potentially hike the Hebridean Way.)
- Stow away the 20 gallon and get a bigger enclosure for a larger reptillian friend. I'm not going to lie, a Ball Pythons (Python regius,) would be awesome and their particularly slow metabolism would be ideal for my thruhiking hobby (some adults only eat once every three weeks.) I also really like Pueblan Milksnakes (Lambropeltis triangulum campbelli,) and Arizona Mountain Kingsnakes (Lambropeltis pyromelana)! In fact, a Pueblan Milksnake is probably my dream snake - I'd feel happy every single time that I looked at that thing.
Alternatively I could adopt a tokay gecko (Gekko gecko) because they are not only beautiful but hilarious but since they are vocal geckos I'd probably have to keep it in my room.
Downside to an animal requiring a whole bigger enclosure: I'm not... financially well at the moment. This will change eventually, but right now? Right now things are hard.
But building an enclosure from scratch woukd also be really fun!
Wait, aren't fish really high maintenance? No, not really, not when you have automated systems in place like I do already and plan to add. An automatic feeder will eventually give my fish a daily breakfast meal of mixed pellets (currently a blend of Vitalis, Piscene Energetics, Fauna Marin and Northfin carnivore/clownfish diets,) an Automatic Top Off system guards my salinity against evaporation, my lighting is programmed with a full day/night cycle and an Inkbird temperature controller regulates the temperature of my water. My USB air pump will keep running and oxygenating my water for up to 36 hours in the event of a power outtage. All the coral species which I plan to keep are photosynthetic so they don't need to be fed actual food for their survival while I am away. My fish won't get any tasty frozen food when I am gone but they will have the pellets to munch on as well as the tiny live copepods which also call my reef home. For maintaining water chemistry I have extensive rockwork and porous media for biological filtration and I will soon be introducing macroalgae to one of my filter compartments. (Plants are the original filters and will - along with my future corals - lap up my nitrates and phosphates like greedy puppies.) Additionally, I have other plans for autominously maintaining other properties of my water and I will be purchasing a chiller before next summer (because fans suck at cooling aquarium water.)
If I do adopt another reptile I will be giving it UVB as well as a bioactive setup just like Diego had. Due to Keplar's very strong prey drive and my tendancy to deeply bond with my pets rodents are not on option for me as pets. I will be fortifying the terrarium similar to how I have fortified my reef tank against Keplar being a pest to my other animals.
I also have vague plans to build or buy some taller, better stands so that he can't go nose-to-nose with my non-feline pets anymore.
(Keplar is so cute but he is such a pest to non-feline organisms.)

Muses as pets/animals :
Fujiko
A very cuddly and affectionate Siamese cat. Always the one to welcome you home with brushes to the leg, asking to be held. She has an affinity for the tv and is usually pretty quick to join you when she hears it being turned on. Her favorite places to hide/chill out are in your closet or in your open dresser drawers. They're like little nest piles for her.
Reid
A moody Maine Coon. Switches from being affectionate and cuddly to being cold and reclusive. Gets jealous when you pay attention to other things/people or smell like other cats (except her sister) and will pout for the rest of the day. Likes to sleep next to you in bed. She will get into all of the foods you don't want her to get into and likes to eat table food. Not at all a fan of catnip.
Riley
A rowdy and chatty Maine Coon, but she acts more like a dog than a cat. Likes to roughhouse/play with her sister and her human(s). Likes to wander outside and tends to come home dirty, so the need for a bath with her is often. But she hates actual water baths so good luck wrestling her into the tub. Prone to biting to get her way. Likes to sleep on top of your chest or your feet when you're in bed. Whichever causes you more issues.
Chouko
Okay hear me out when I say that Chouko is a Pygmy Goat. A small but very active and friendly friend. Loves to meet new people and other animals. Unfortunately she's very active and if you don't have her leashed or in a large enclosed space, you're going to have to chase her down if she gets too excited.
Aika
A shy but very loving dwarf chinchilla. Quiet and incontroversional, she's enjoys having the enclosed space that is her cage and doesn't like to explore when she's taken out. She bonds extremely well with her human and always make little happy noises in their presence but it takes her a while to open up to new people. Cuddle times are a must and she'd more than not chew/nibble on hair/clothing as a way to show her affection.
Val
A lovely mini lop that's as sweet as she is fragile. A cuddle buddy through and through that adores people, so she gets along with most. Her energy levels differ from day to day so some days she might be in the mood to play 'games' like hide and seek and other days she's solely a cuddle fiend. She does suffer from the 'snuffles' so a little extra care is needed.
Seika
An ever curious (Blue-Eyed Leucistic) ball python. The one that always plays nice around others but there's plenty of reasons why she's riddled you with bite marks. Her ways of affection are always concerning: wrapping herself around your arms and neck, small love bites here and there, licking at your face (especially if you know she hasn't eaten just yet). Pretty picky about her food and will play with any food she doesn't like until you feed her something else.
Andrew
A black golden retriever with nothing but love and excitement for the world. Everything that you can expect from a goldie: silly, affectionate, active. He's the type that'd want a more active human so that the two can constantly play and be outside but he'd also be fine being an at-home dog. Very vocal and likes to 'sing' a lot, lol. He has a couple of other dog friends around the block and often wants to go out to meet/play with them.
Yuuki
A hyper-independent pomeranian. One you probably found off the street rather than through adopting. The amount of convincing you have to do to get him to do things is unfortunate and there's still a chance he'd still ignore your requests. It takes a while for him to warm up to people and even once he's comfortable with you he's still not affectionate.
Pets are rare and you can't pick him up unless he needs to get to higher places. He will bite you if you continue to try to pick him up. He's active, though, and is always willing to go on walks or play. Doesn't like playing with any of the smaller dogs at the dog park and always wants to play with the bigger dogs. Picky about the food he eats and sometimes he genuinely has a bad time eating things, but those days are easy to pick out as it's his low-energy day.
Ishin
Legal Option: A kai ken that almost feels like an old soul. Even as a puppy he was very well behaved and easy to train. Perfect with both kids and other pets but if he's bigger than them he will play/tease them. Very observant and likes to watch others. His favorite thing to do is stand in doorways because it mildly inconveniences others.
Illegal Option: A... surprisingly friendly silver fox. Not really considered your pet, but he's around and obedient enough to essentially be called so. Quiet and social towards other people and animals. You need to have permission to touch/pet him. Will occasionally bring back 'treasures' (twigs, small rocks, leaves) from any neighboring forests or park to show his affection.
Idris
A pompous (if not entitled) Standardized Poodle. You can believe that you've properly trained him but he will always act out on his own accord and will make you deal with the repercussions. Loves to play around and toy with other animals and humans. It's easy to tell that he just loves the attention either way and, as you can imagine, he will get upset when you don't pay attention to him. He will bark and fuss and pout but, if you ignore him long enough, he'll probably leave you alone to cause some chaos elsewhere. And don't let his fully exterior get the best of you, he can absolutely be as vicious as any dog and will always be ready to attack anyone that threatens his human.
Orion
Legal Option: A box turtle, more than likely. Unassuming, for the most part, and you'd expect that as much from the little guy swimming around in his tank. But, on occasion, you'd hear such aggressive thumping and sloshing from where his tank would sit. He was absolutely doing flips and jumping off the top of his artificial rocks into the water. It would go on for minutes to the hour for no other reason than he found it fun.
Illegal Option: A penguin. That also secretly a menace. Picks up all of the bad/silly habits that you display around him. Not talkative by any means, but will have 'conversations' with you if you talk to him first. If you use animal buttons with him, the amount of profanity he'd use is astounding....
Akashi
A doberman-husky mix that works as a service dog. Pretty aloof towards anyone other than his human but can be pretty intimidating just by first glance. Behind closed doors, though, he's can be pretty affectionate and likes to lay on top of his human (if he can) as his main display of affection. He's great with kids and other animals and is generally a big softie.

Bungou Stray Dogs daemon AU
Kunikida
his Daemon’s name Izumi (Famale). she settled as a German Shepherd- actually she’s a East European Shepherd but no one really cares about details. ahh idk when they settled since we know nothing about Kunikida’s story.

Dazai
his Daemon’s name is Shizuko (Female). she settled as a Caracal when they’re almost 16. Everyone thought that when they settled it would be this big dramatic thing but really they just woke up one day the they were settled. they didn’t even tell anyone about it until a few days later when they casually mentioned it to Chuuya and Kitsu

Ranpo
his Daemon’s name is Moroto (Male). he settled as a Raven after they met Fukuzawa, i haven’t actually watched the latest season yet so i don’t know much about their story

Yosano
her Daemon’s name is Kaoru (Male). he settled as a Nightingale during the Great War. (if you can’t tell, i also don’t know much about her story.)

Atsushi
his Daemon’s name is Yuan (they didn’t even know what gender was for a long time and she thinks its stupid to limit yourself to just one). She settled as a Pygmy Rabbit when they jumped off of the train with Kyoka and Taro during ep 8 (yes, it’s as small as it looks)
Kyoka
her Daemon’s name is Taro (Male leaning but also doesn’t really care, so Demiboy). they Settled as a Snow Petrel at the end of season 2, when they’re talking to Dazai and Shizuko before the crash the plane into the Moby Dick

Junichiro
his Daemon’s name is Seki (Female). she settled as a Prairie Dog sometime before they joined the ADA? again, we don’t know much about their story yet

Naomi
her Daemon’s name is Jokichi (Male). he settled as a Dhole before Junichiro (we need their story!!)

Fukuzawa
his Daemon’s name is Yoshi (Male). he settled as a Grey Wolf pretty early and is big for a Daemon, hell he’s big for a wolf even (wow we really don’t know much about characters early life do we? This is getting really annoying.)

now for some bonus characters because the PM part is gonna take me a while
Katai
his Daemon’s name is Okada (Female). she settled Tree Python not long after Kunikida and Izumi settled, so whenever that was.

Chuuya
his Daemon’s name is Kitsu (Female). she settled as an Ethiopian Wolf during that one scene in stormbringer. yeah that one, you know the one.

Kenji is not on here because he hasn’t settled yet

Python Snake | Characteristics, 10 Types, Prices, Facts, Care Tips

Python snakes, known for their striking beauty and captivating presence, are a subject of fascination for reptile enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. In this guide, we delve into the world of python snakes, uncovering their diverse species, behaviours, and care requirements. Whether you’re a seasoned enthusiast or considering a python as a pet, this guide offers valuable insights into their history, habits, and responsible ownership, allowing you to appreciate these magnificent reptiles to the fullest.
Python Snake
When we think of the word “Python,” our minds might immediately jump to the world of coding and programming. However, there’s another kind of Python that has captured the fascination of nature enthusiasts for centuries — the python snake. In this article, we’ll delve into the intriguing world of these remarkable constrictors, uncovering their habits, habitats, and unique traits that make them stand out in the animal kingdom.
The Diversity of Pythons:
Pythons belong to a family of non-venomous snakes found in diverse regions across the globe. From the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia to the arid landscapes of Africa and Australia, these snakes have adapted to a variety of environments. With over 40 species identified, each python exhibits distinctive patterns and colouration that help them blend seamlessly into their surroundings, making them a true marvel of evolution.
Size Matters:
One of the most awe-inspiring aspects of pythons is their remarkable size. Ranging from the relatively small pygmy python, which measures around 2 feet in length, to the colossal reticulated python, stretching up to 30 feet, these serpents showcase an astonishing spectrum of sizes. The reticulated python, in particular, holds the title for the world’s longest snake, captivating both researchers and snake enthusiasts alike.
Hunting Techniques:
Pythons are known for their constricting hunting technique. Unlike venomous snakes that rely on toxic bites, pythons overpower their prey by coiling their muscular bodies around them. This suffocates the prey, allowing the snake to consume it whole. This unique hunting style not only showcases their remarkable strength but also emphasizes their role as apex predators within their ecosystems.
Parental Care:
In a surprising twist, some python species exhibit dedicated maternal care — a behaviour not commonly associated with reptiles. After laying their eggs, female pythons incubate and guard them diligently. Once the eggs hatch, the mother remains close by to protect her offspring until they are capable of fending for themselves. This nurturing behaviour sets pythons apart and highlights their complex social dynamics.
Conservation and Threats:
Despite their awe-inspiring presence, many python species face threats due to habitat loss, illegal pet trade, and even hunting for their skins. Conservation efforts are crucial to ensure the survival of these magnificent creatures and maintain the balance of their respective ecosystems.
