anyone ever think about how henry iv is straight-up lying to hal here. like he JUST lies. we know from richard ii (play; see fig. 3) that it was bolingbroke who hung out with the common people, bolingbroke who went out of his way to win the love of the broader population; in fact richard's speech about it mirrors the exact language hal uses to talk about ingratiating himself with random dudes in bars! (see fig. 4.) and it's not like shakespeare FORGOT this, because OTHER PEOPLE in the h4 plays also corroborate this information and note that nobody gave a fuck about richard because he only hung out with rich twinks (see fig. 2, i am paraphrasing). and yet bolingbroke-become-king-henry tells the story to hal as if richard was TOO in-touch with the people, not too isolated, and as if bolingbroke himself was the distant one, and he does this specifically so he can compare hal to richard and, unfavorably, to himself. and perhaps he can convince hal of this--it's not like hal was at his father's side for the usurpation. but you know who WAS THERE?? US! US, WE, THE AUDIENCE, WE WERE THERE! and he can lie to his son and put on airs but he can't conceal from everyone how much he's actively constructing and editing and revising his own kingship, compulsively, terrifiedly, grasping for a stable story that does the rhetorical work he wants it to. i see you, shitty old man. i know you. i also know the word you wanted to say in the skipping king line but i'll choose diplomacy

The Many Illustrators of A Tale of Two Cities 15: Charles Keeping

Keeping This One Brief

Our second in the spooky subseries is a set by Charles Keeping, a famed English illustrator, children's book author, and lithographer who, among his many other accomplishments, illustrated the entirety of Dickens's work for the Folio Society.

This set is unique among all those we've seen so far, both for its recentness (call its publication date a Bowling for Soup song the way it's "1985"🤪) and for its source:

Rather than being from a large public resource like the Internet Archive or from my own personal scans, these are all coming from the personal blog of Derrick J. Knight, a fellow netizen who just so happens to have scanned the illustrations of the book he was reading and uploaded them to the Internet for all to see.

Out of gratitude and respect for giving these precious rarities of illustrations to the public, I'm going to keep this post simple and straightforward, with no post-notes.

No, break wasn't the right word. Willingly fold to offer from what is, by all accounts, the chief god of the pantheon he worships. Convenient as it was to have an 'in' with this one as a rare modern-day faithful, that came with risk: Full faith and knowledge of the pantheon, not strictly loyal to a single god as an Avatar would. (Even those from Thebes broadly worshipped the Triad, the family of Amun-Ra, Mut and himself...)

If Khonshu saw that opportunity, it must've been plain as day to Ra. Descending upon a starstruck believer with an offer of greatness as the Sun King, offer him the world on a plate. Or, a chance to meet the gods he had such faith in. Perhaps Avi would have some foolish notion of changing things from the inside. Being brought on a solar barque to meet the other gods he believed in so strongly, to convince them to return to the world they turned their back on!

As though Ra would do anything but kill, devour, and sit atop the throne. Chain Avi to the throne like a pet, if he stayed loyal.

-. SPUNKY FUNKY Eunjae & Taejoo details

While setting up the new muse docs I wanted to add a few more spunky things to a few muses to make them look a little less human (even if just in the tiniest of details, I made one of the angles a skrunkly who's height constantly shifted) and since I associate Eunjae & Taejoo I've given them basically the same detail lmao (also because since they have mind-based abilities I wanted there to be a way to show when said abilities are active).

They have tiny dots in their irises. They're scientific name will be 'them spunky funky tiny dots'. They're really fine and difficult to notice unless you get real close and know what you're looking for, or either of these two is using their respective ability (mind reading for Eunjae, telekinesis for Taejoo).

Eunjae's spunky funky tiny silver dots

are usually wrapped around their pupil in such orderly and tight fashion, if you were to lean in close enough or take a photo and enhance, they'd look like a fine line of light, like the sun when it's buried by the moon in a total eclipse. When reading someone's mind, these dots then expand away from the pupil in a circular, spiralling outward motion, a movement that is kept going until Eunjae shuts that shit down again and the spots retreat calmly back to the pupil in the same motion, simply in reverse.

Taejoo's spunky funky tiny golden dots

are scattered throughout the iris. Where Eunjae's move in methodical, slow circling motions before retreating just as organized and calmly, Taejoo's spunky funky spots just stay still, scattered awkwardly almost, until he uses his abilities. When he activates his telekinesis (usually against his will, let's be real) they start scurrying through the colour of his iris, glowing like tiny stars, with no real rhyme or reason, it looks like a dance if the goal of the dance was to make things look as confusing as possible. When he stops using his abilities, they just stop where they were and the light they emit dims into matte gold.
