NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope has observed the well-known Ring Nebula in unprecedented detail. Formed by a star throwing off its outer layers as it runs out of fuel, the Ring Nebula is an archetypal planetary nebula. This new image from Webb’s NIRCam (Near-Infrared Camera) shows intricate details of the filament structure of the inner ring. There are some 20,000 dense globules in the nebula, which are rich in molecular hydrogen. In contrast, the inner region shows very hot gas. The main shell contains a thin ring of enhanced emission from carbon-based molecules known as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).

When a simple salt-and-burn goes sideways, it ends up with Cas’ memories stolen from him. Dean is left to pick up the pieces of the life they built together, his ‘make it up as he goes’ strategy to prove to his mate that Dean’s still worth a damn, his only chance at getting Cas back. He’s done a shitty-ass job at keeping Cas safe before, but he will pull out all the stops now to woo his mate again and stir the memories Dean knows are still there buried deep inside Cas’ mind.

The Year’s Most Spectacular Photos from the James Webb Telescope
By Jeffrey Kluger
December 22, 2023

Close to 1,500 light years from Earth lie a pair of baby stellar twins known as Herbig-Haro 46/47 — which are barely a few thousand years old.
A star the size of our sun, by contrast, takes an average of 50 million years to reach even the stellar equivalent of young adulthood It's Herbig-Haro 46/47's extreme youth that gives the formation more of a blob-like appearance than the stellar duo it is.
Young stars are buried in clouds of dust and gas, which they absorb as they grow. Sometimes, however the infant stars ingest too much material too fast.
When that happens, dust and gas erupts from both sides of the formation, giving the young pair their misshapen look.
But if you have patience — 50 million years worth of patience — what is a blob today will be stars tomorrow.
NASA, ESA, CSA. Image Processing: Joseph DePasquale (STScI)

A pair of brilliant stellar nurseries located 1,600 light years from Earth, the Orion Nebula and Trapezium Cluster are home to a relative handful of very young but very bright stars.
Four of the stars are easy to see with a simple, amateur, four-inch telescope.
One of the four — the beast of the young litter — is especially visible, a full 20,000 times brighter than our sun.
Apart from their four main stars, the Orion Nebula and Trapezium cluster contain approximately 700 additional young stars at various stages of gestation.
NASA, ESA, CSA/Science leads and image processing: M. McCaughrean, S. Pearson, CC BY-SA 3.0 IGO

(L): It’s not easy being a Wolf-Rayet star, like this specimen imaged by the Webb telescope at a distance of 15,000 light years.
A rare species of stellar beast — NASA estimates there are only 220 of them in a Milky Way galaxy with at least 100 billion stars — the Wolf-Rayet burns hot and burns fast, with temperatures 20 to 40 times the surface of the sun.
All of that rapidly expended energy causes the star to lose its hydrogen envelope quickly and expose its helium core.
The result: a very early and very violent death.
A star like our sun burns for about 10 billion years. As for a Wolf-Rayet? Just a few hundred thousand before it dissolves into cosmic dust.
NASA, ESA, CSA, STScI, Webb ERO Production Team
(R): If the Wolf-Rayet star dies an ugly and violent death, the celebrated Ring Nebula, photographed by the Webb at a distance of 2,000 light years from Earth, has been expiring beautifully.
The glowing remains of a sun-like star, the nebula was discovered in 1779 by the French astronomer Antoine Darquier de Pellepoix.
As the nebula throws off its outer layers of ionized gas, it reveals its characteristic blue interior, composed of hydrogen and oxygen that have not yet been expelled off by the nebula’s stellar wind.
ESA/Webb, NASA, CSA, M. Barlow (University College London), N. Cox (ACRI-ST), R. Wesson (Cardiff University)

Dwarf galaxy NGC 6822 lives up to to its name — home to just 10 million stars, compared to the minimum of 100 billion in the Milky Way.
But what NGC 6822 lacks in numbers, it makes up in spectacle — which the keen eye of the Webb telescope has revealed.
Discovered in 1884 by American astronomer E.E Barnard, NGC 6822, is now known to have a prodigious dust tail measuring 200 light years across..
What's more, it's home to a dense flock of stars that glow 100,000 times brighter than our sun.
ESA/Webb, NASA & CSA, M. Meixnev

Spiral galaxies are often defined by uneven — and even ragged — arms.
But not galaxy M51, which lies 27 million light years from Earth and is defined by the tautness of its arms and the compactness of its structure.
M51 isn't alone in space. Nearby lies the companion galaxy NGC 5195.
The two galaxies are engaged in something of a gravitational tug of war — one that the NGC 5195 is winning.
NGC's constant gravitational pull is thought to account for both the tightly woven structure of M51's arms and for tidal forces that are thought lead to the creation of new stars in the arms.
ESA/Webb, NASA & CSA, A. Adamo (Stockholm University) and the FEAST JWST team

Just below Orion’s belt lies one of the most celebrated objects in the night sky: the Orion Nebula, a stellar nursery that is home to about 700 young stars.
This Webb image focuses not on the entirety of the nebula but on a structure in the lower left-hand quadrant known as the Orion Bar.
So named because of its diagonal, ridge-like appearance, the bar is shaped by the powerful radiation of the hot, young stars surrounding it.
ESA/Webb, NASA, CSA, M. Zamani (ESA/Webb), and the PDRs4All ERS Team

A baby by stellar standards, the IC 348 Star cluster is just five million years old and located about 1,000 light years from Earth.
Composed of an estimated 700 stars, IC 348 has a structure similar to wispy curtains, created by dust that reflects the light of the stars.
The conspicuous loop in the right hand side of the image is likely created by the gusting of solar winds blowing in the direction that, from Earth, would be west to east.
NASA, ESA, CSA, STScI, Kevin Luhman (PSU), Catarina Alves de Oliveira (ESA)

When it comes to galaxies, there's big and then there's huge and by any measure, Pandora's Cluster — more formally, known as Abell 2744 — qualifies as the latter.
Not just a galaxy, and not even a cluster of galaxies, Abell 2744 is a cluster of four clusters, which long ago collided with one another.
Located 3.5 billion light years from Earth, Pandora's Cluster measures a staggering 350 million years across.
The cluster's massive collective gravity allows astronomers to use it as a gravitational lens, bending and magnifying the light of foreground objects, making them easier to study.
NASA, ESA, CSA, I. Labbe (Swinburne University of Technology) and R. Bezanson (University of Pittsburgh). Image processing: Alyssa Pagan (STScI)

Webb was built principally to look at the oldest and most distant objects in the universe, some of 13.4 billion light years away.
But doesn't prevent the telescope from peering into its own back yard.
This image of Saturn and some of its 146 moons, rivals the images obtained by the Pioneer and Voyager probes.
NASA, ESA, CSA, STScI, Matt Tiscareno (SETI Institute), Matt Hedman (University of Idaho), Maryame El Moutamid (Cornell University), Mark Showalter (SETI Institute), Leigh Fletcher (University of Leicester), Heidi Hammel (AURA). Image processing: J. DePasquale (STScI)

Infant stars are born all over the universe, but the closest stellar birthing suite to Earth is the Rho Ophiuchi cloud complex, located just 460 light years distant.
A turbulent — even violent — place, Rho Ophiuchi is defined by jets of gas roaring from young stars.
Most of the stars in this comparatively modest nursery are more or less the size of the sun.
But one, known as S1, is far bigger — so much so that it is self-immolating, carving a great cavity around itself with its stellar wind, the storm of charged particle's all stars emit, though few with the gale-force power of S1.
NASA, ESA, CSA, STScI, Klaus Pontoppidan (STScI)

A few quick questions regarding our favourite knife feet lady and how you chose to develop her for the needs of PEW:
Am I correct in assuming that "The Commander" was probably the first Exorcist made by Adam? And also, when did the exterminations begun?
I also wanted to know where do you imagine the exorcists have their weapons from?
Given Carmillas affinity with angelic steel I guess that she was at least somewhat involved in the procurement of their weapons, but at the same time she definitely wasn't a sole creator (given how you said they now have modern firearms in their armory, which she wouldn't have been able to make. And also since they usually have to replace a lot of spears every year.)
I was also wondering about what may have caused her to "retire" and how it must have involved her daughters (a most probable cause, given how we all know how much she's willing to sacrifice for them) when I noticed that the chronology doesn't add up:
If Lute was made 257 years ago, as a replacement for Commander, then that means Carmilla must have retired at around ~1770 Ballet may have been a thing since XV c. , but the Nutcracker and Swan Lake were written in late 19th c, at least a hundred years after Carmilla retired.
Unless her daughters names, as well as the whole ballerina theme she's got going on, were just a series of happy coincidences, a century (at least) must have passed before they were born, to be named the way they were.
Alternatively, the names and dressing style may have been changed later for whatever reason (a name change when arriving in hell is absolutely understandable) but again, there's about a 100 year gap between a retirement and when names Clara and Odetta became relevant to the ballet.
Therefore it leaves us with few possibilities:
a) Girls were born early, they may have even been relevant to Commander retirement, then changed their names 100 years later, probably when arriving in hell. a1) They lived in heaven (possibly earth?) during that time before going to hell and taking up new names. a2) They went to hell right away, but went through identity change at some point.
b) Carmilla had them only after she left her office, which while possible leaves us with even more questions.
Sorry for the question spam, but your work has burrowed the mindworms in my brain and I've been thinking about it for a while now, impatiently awaiting next chapter.
Love your work, take care
*cracks knuckles*
Alright, so.
The Commander was the first Exorcist made by Adam but Sera helped him through the process to show him how it was done. After Commander, Adam made the rest of the Exorcists by himself.
Exterminations began approximately 500 years ago
Exorcists are given their weapons from the Angelic Armory, which has a massive stockpile of weaponry and there are heavenly smiths who can create new and custom weapons as per approved request.
Carmilla isn't the sole weapon distributor in Hell but at this point she controls the vast majority of the supply. Exorcists do not have firearms in their armory (much to Kitty's annoyance). She can create firearms herself and has hired multiple gunsmiths to help in this endeavor. Notably, in a reference I'm pretty sure nobody caught on to, Clara mentions working with Horace and Daniel in the R&D department, these being Horace Smith and Daniel B. Wesson of Smith and Wesson. Anyway, Most of the collected angelic weapons are simply melted down for raw material to be infused into new designs.
The reason Commander chose to retire is RAFO
To clarify a lot of details in regards to the timeline of Carmilla's time in Hell and the naming of her daughters, Carmilla has been in Hell since the late 1700s but she did not give birth to her daughters until pretty recently. All of her children are Hellborn (presumably) and born within the last 30-40 years. Not going to give them an exact age because ambiguity of non-mortal lifespans and such but yeah. Velvette, Clara, and Odette are all adults but they're pretty young in comparison to most everyone in the show, hence why Velvette only decided to split from her family about 10 years ago or so.
As for why they were born so late after Carmilla entered Hell, that's also RAFO but I'll just say that Carmilla wanted to have some... Specific conditions fulfilled before she was ready to start her own family.

Mr. Cheapo’s (Mineola) shopping list, 2018.
I hate to break this to everyone, but I suffered three weeks of losses. I’m not ready to disclose the results yet, but it was a heavily-anxious three weeks of seeing and experiencing everything over-amplified. All this year I forgot how it felt to be feeling down, and then it hit. Opportunities taken away, isolation in crowded places, mechanics failing, it goes on. When it rains, it pours. Hard.
So what do you do? You call on friends and family. Hopefully they have the answers and alleviation to your personal turbulation. You also can go record-shopping, what I haven’t done in two months. Money was put in the bank again and I been ordering books and tees furiously. Because you must do you. No matter what’s going on in the background world, you need to keep going forward. What you take is up to you.
I arrived at Cheapo’s in Mineola. It’s the only independent store with two locations, the other which is in Commack. The last time I went to the Mineola location was with my ex- Yenny which I scored Sun Ra’s Astro Black, some Redd Foxx comedy albums on vinyl, and Lonnie Liston Smith on disc, all during a summer of great involvement and intense conflict. This time, a visit to Cheapo’s Nassau locale was nagging me. Now here I am.
Not even my first minute in the store and I see Richie Cole’s New York Afternoon for $3.00. The albums’ title track was part of a personal mixtapes which was (sadly) the soul of Hurricane Sandy that devastated Long Island’s south shore. So was “Texas Ann” from Joe Beck’s self-titled album. And how did a clean copy of Dott & Night School’s Carousel e.p. get priced for only $2.00? Then I head to the back of the store where they housed the good stuff: the used jazz / fusion, R&B, and hip-hop vinyl section. CBS had their best-of compilations of all their jazz artists at the turn of the Seventies / Eighties. This time, I picked up Lee Ritenour’s and the Tappan Zee label’s, which is the baby of Bob James of “Angela” fame. To my surprise, two Steve Khan albums were sitting there waiting to be taken. One was Tightrope which had “Darlin’ Darlin’ Baby”, a Seventies staple of my Brooklyn Atari youth which always gets at least 10 repeats for every initial play. Hank Crawford was an acquisition as was Chick Corea’s Return To Forever which had that specific version of “Crystal Silence”, a definitive sentimental watermark of that said conflicting summer.
Now this was where I hit it big: the hip-hop and single sections. Both vinyl and disc. I really hit the jackpot. In the vinyl bins: a beat-up Hi-Tek record for six. A Schoolly D single for two. And, Jemini The Gifted One, an artist you almost never hear of as he’s underground. In the singles section, many dollar singles found in golden-era rap, dancehall, and reggae I always heard on the radio back in the Brentwood era. Mic Geronimo, Shabba Ranks, Rayvon, Little Shawn, Black Moon, Smif-N-Wesson, and D&D All-Stars. That wasn’t all of it though. Cheapo’s hip-hop CD shelves were stuffed. I found at least 15 titles I sorely missed that I could’ve captured during that golden-era. Now they’re finally mine. Wu-Tang Clan, Lords Of The Underground, Milk, Boogie Down Productions, Eric B & Rakim, and more. It’s about time I played catch up for all the titles I should’ve had all along. This was all the music that made backseat summer trips, sitting on friend’s front porches and curbs, walks down the block, cassette mixtapes, and endless gaming nights. Never forget where you came from.
Let’s not forget the punk and hardcore section. Cheapo’s had no 45’s or 7”’s for sale, but I did pick up New Bomb Turks, Easy Action, The Vacancies, and those snot-nosed prick bastards The Nobodys, one of the very few bands who could give The Dwarves a run for their misogynistic penny. Their views, not mine. Finally, Genesis and George Michael, two fail-safe titles of theirs my ma’ always had on in our single-digit Eighties youth. One more peck before I go…lo and behold, there was an unmarked Specials LP in one of the crates under the bins. That was a dollar find because Cheapo’s son called it. For anyone who bought their LPs on Discogs and eBay reading this, tell me how you feel paying collector’s prices for them?
This was a spur-of-the-moment visit. I did say I would give record-shopping a rest. But when stress, tough times, and events around you come at you one lion or tiger after the other, you need a quick reprieve to get the mind off for the better. By going music-shopping, I found myself back to where I should be, worry-free and lots to look forward to. Summer is here. Why throw it all away feeling blue?
