how do you imitate the danganronpa style so well?? it's always so good!!
Great Question!
First, having a somewhat decent grasp on anatomy (which is something I still need to practice lol) or “the basics” of character art is always a must imo. Having a good understanding of forms is our starting grounds for further stylization. Think of it as the “skeleton” of any style. Moreover, the Danganronpa style comes in various forms, all with different characteristics/visual characteristics.
However, and I think this is a very important distinction, I try to study Rui Komatsuzaki’s overall style as opposed to just Danganronpa. In other words, Rui Komatsuzaki, like any other creative, has his own personal stylization and artistic evolution throughout his career as an illustrator.
In DR1, Komatsuzaki’s style included much thinner lineart, bigger heads, and more gradients with the softer shading. The vibe is very much more “grounded” compared to later titles. (Example: Toko!)
In contrast, DR2 has slightly modified proportions (like bigger hands), simplified shading, and much more vibrant color palettes. The line art during this time was also streamlined with less lines and thicker pen pressure. It makes the sprites pop out a bunch! (Example: Mahiru!)

Of course, with UDG, we see these two styles somewhat overlap, resembling his later stylization. Here we see the modified proportions and color preferences from DR2 with the thinner linework and detail of DR1. (See Toko Again!)
Finally, we see this similar style philosophy continued in V3, only with even more contrasting colors, reflecting the hyper bright/attention grabbing palettes of serialized work. The shading is much darker than previous titles, and somewhat colder too. (See Miu this time.)
Of course, with all of this in mind, taking notes is imperative! Especially if you want to replicated a specific entry’s stylization. You can draw over some of the dr sprites just to get a general feel of the proportions. I can probably post more latter down the line, but this was the most recent thing I’ve done. See below! (I was trying to get a sense of how “high” the hair sits on top of dr)

Now, for his splash art work, Komatsuzaki’s began his process by blocking out his pieces in bluish hues before the polishing phase. he most likely applied a mix of “color”, “multiply”, or “color dodge” once we finishes rendering for finalizing colors. (As depicted below.)

You can also see how Komatsuzaki simplifies clothing and the like. He very much uses thicker brush work for these types of illustrations as opposed to the lines of his 2D work during this point in his career. Future points show how he plans his stuff with more thin line work. From here he most likely did the same thing. Focusing on the forms before getting to the hues and values

Sorry for going on a bit of a tangent, I have A LOT of thoughts on DR and Komatsuzaki’s artwork in general. I really love seeing his process, so I hope this brief overview can provide as a decent introduction! If more people want me to go over specific aspects of the style, I’d be more than happy to share my own thoughts! Thank you for reading!

late too but moar writer's ask! 1, 8, 12, 21, and 49? ^_^
Yes, the ask meme for writers, the meme meant for writers, the writer’s ask meme
1. Tell us about your favorite WIP!I don’t do WIPs : | ya go for it or ya don’t mcfreakin go for itAlthough I mean I have two outlines kinda just gestating right now; one’s a YuiMari Transistor AU and the other is an Asurei P3I oneshot so
8. Do you have any writing buddies or critique partners?I do but not solely for the purpose of writing? Like there’s @r0sie-p0sies who is my wingman for all things sad and Yuimari, and @thorlol and @primitiveradiogoddess for Asurei and Asukyu and whatever insanity my brain gets up to
12. Which story of yours do you like best? why? For Evangelion, Perihelion. Couldn’t possibly imagine why. Of my original stuff, it’s top seekrit(TM) maybe I’ll finally work on it enough someday haha
21. What aspect of your writing are you most proud of? It only really picked up in quality like... wow, is that two Marches ago already holy shit? But yeah. At least I can write, which is saying a lot more than some people who contribute to the ‘Gross Misuse of Fics Xairathan Has Written’ department.
49. Favorite fictional world?POST THIRD IMPACT EVANGELION WHOOOOOOOOO

Yui comes by the lab one night when it’s late, when Mari’s there working alone (she shouldn’t be) on one of her pet projects. She wants it done now, she says, before she has to leave for England. Yui knows what it really means, that Mari’s trying to avoid her with excuses of having stayed up late and needing to sleep through the day.
That’s why she comes when the campus is dark and there’s only a single light on in the science building; that’s why she stands in the middle of the classroom, holding a beaker that Mari needs, staring at the underclassman gawping at her, slack-jawed.
“Yui?” Mari says, stepping carefully around the tables towards her- more carefully, Yui thinks, than she’s carrying out her experiments. “What’re you doing here?”
“Coming to see you.” Yui smiles, looking as though she’d give Mari a hug, wanted or not, if it weren’t for the beaker cradled carefully in her hands. “You don’t think I’m going to let my friend work herself to death, do you?”
“That’s not what I’m doing. I’m finishing projects. Can I have that, please?”
“You’ve been working so hard lately. Don’t you ever take a break?”
“I’ll take a break when I get to London,” Mari mutters. She tugs at the sleeves of her lab coat. Yui glimpses her nails, bitten down, and a faint red line that must be a cut from shattered glass.
“Look at you,” says Yui. “You’re running yourself ragged. Why don’t we clean up, and then we’ll head back?”
She lowers the beaker onto the table and steps towards Mari. Mari’s retreat is so hurried, she stumbles over her own feet, nearly falling backwards. She catches herself on the corner of a table and stands, hunched over, heart pounding at such a speed that surely Yui must hear it.
“Are you sure you’re alright?” asks Yui. “You look exhausted.”
“I need to finish this.” Mari sounds now like she’s pleading to be left alone, for Yui to leave her, as she inevitably must. “Yui.”
“It’s alright.” Yui approaches, gathers Mari up in her arms, and walks her over to the nearest stool. She pushes Mari onto it, then returns to the station that Mari’s been working on and picks up where she left off impeccably, like she’s known all along what Mari needs and must do, and is willing to do them for her.
“You can’t,” protests Mari. A look from Yui keeps her rooted in her seat- even now, she’s still hesitant to disappoint her- but she waves her arms, as if this will somehow persuade Yui to stop. “I’m not supposed to have help.”
“You’re not supposed to be up here, either. No one’s going to know.” For some reason, Yui is smiling. She pours the contents of the beaker into another, swirls it a few times, then leaves it to rest on the table. “You stay there, okay?” she says. “I’ll be back in a moment.”
Yui vanishes from sight; the door swings open, and she’s gone. Mari stays on the stool, staring at the ground, trying to puzzle out if Yui just never takes her lab coat off, or if she’s worn it this one time with the express purpose of coming to help her. Her throat burns, but she refuses to let any tears form. She’s here to do work, not to commiserate with herself: she’ll do that later, when she’s back in her apartment, if Yui ever lets her go.
The liquid in the beaker, supposed to be changing color, remains resolutely clear. Mari wonders if Yui knows this, that she’s been sabotaging her own work, that she could’ve been done days ago, but she refuses to let that happen. She must stay here late at night, so she can avoid having to see Yui in the halls, but now this method will no longer work.
The door creaks. Yui’s back. She walks over in front of Mari, and Mari knows she’s seen the beaker, but Yui doesn’t look disappointed. Instead she lifts Mari’s hands and presses something into them, something cold: milk coffee, she realizes, her favorite.
“Just sit here, alright?” Yui says. “I’ll fix it.”
Mari nods, but Yui does not stop touching her hands. Yui holds them tightly, refusing to let go, as if by this contact she can somehow gain the answer to why Mari’s intentionally prolonging her work. She already knows, though. She’d known it when she came here with the intent of changing something, but now her courage has failed, and all she can offer Mari is a drink and condolences best left unspoken.
