Facebook thought this was a brilliant idea back in 2013. Still, many found themselves asking themselves why they should spend money on this gear when they could use their regular phone to access the Facebook programme. It goes without saying that the Facebook phone was a complete failure.

The Fire phone from Amazon was a similar flop. Its main goal was to persuade consumers to make more Amazon purchases. The failure of both gadgets stemmed from their inability to provide a basic response to the question, “What problem does this device solve “After considering these two cases, you may marvel how Facebook and Amazon’s smart people introduced such fantastical products.

Why should you talk when you can tap the screen, even if you were persuaded of the benefits of doing everything from one location rather than using several apps? A discrete and effective way to engage is to tap on a screen. Conversely, voice instructions require vocalisation, which in some situations can be bothersome and inconvenient. For the majority of people, it will be much easier to tap on a screen than to speak commands out loud.

The R1 is intended to be used in conjunction with smartphones rather than as a substitute for them. But what’s the compelling reason, given that most people are already hooked to their phones, to carry about an extra AI device in my pocket? Being an app rather than a piece of hardware would have been far preferable for R1.
