Railroad AU X6-88 has infected my brain so i made a lil thing about how he got the courser chip out of his head. i figured it would be more fun to make this be mercenary maccready's problem. first time posting for this fandom so hope it turned out okay.

You ever have something so batsh— uh crap insane happen to you that the whole event simply takes up permanent residence in your head?

Although really, if things like this are going to keep happening to him, RJ figures, he’s going to have to open a head hotel to store them all. 

Picture this, you are RJ MacCready, you are 21, just barely donned the Gunner green, and you are accosted by a man with a shoulder to waist ratio like he walked straight out of a pre-war skin mag. With the benefit of hindsight he could contemplate the concept of perfect men existing in this hellscape. 

At the time he was, of course, Distinctly Terrified.

“Do you have a knife?” the man demands, his voice low and steady.

“Wh—”

“A. Knife.” the man emphasizes.

“Yeah but—”

“Good.” the man swiftly cuts him off, holding his hand out expectantly.

“Hold on hold on! I’m not just going to give you my knife!”

“Why not.”

“So you can gut me with it?? Or take it? Weapons are expensive!”

“Fine.” he fishes in his coat before tossing a bag at MacCready. The bag is Heavy. “Is that sufficient?”

“I— yeah sure, what do you even want it for?”

“There is a computer chip in my brain, it must be removed.”

“Are you just, like, going to cut it out?”

“That is the plan.”

“That’s twenty different kinds of dangerous,” and RJ here has no idea what in the fudge possessed him to say this but— “Do you want a hand?”

The man sizes him up.

“It would be appreciated.”

And that's how RJ MacCready found himself 400 caps richer, with hands covered in blood, as he dug around in this mystery man’s head. 

The man didn’t even flinch or make a noise as RJ dug the thing out. A younger him would have been impressed, MacCready the father was mostly just concerned. Who made you so small that you can’t even say ow?

It was one of the afternoons ever.

When it was over, a stimpack closing up the majority of injury, the man had taken the chip and crushed it under his boot.

Then he took out a weirdly white laser rifle and emptied a clip into it.

Then he reloaded. 

And emptied a second.

RJ watched with a kind of detached panic. That was gonna be SO expenssivveeee.

When all was left was some ash and melted plastic, the man took off his impressive leather coat and sunglasses and tossed em into the pile.

The rifle followed.

“Hey so uh, we skipped this part but, the name’s MacCready,” RJ held out a hand to shake.

Steel grey eyes looked down at his hand before acquiescing. 

“For now, X6.”

X6 nodded and then vanished like smoke before the realization that RJ just dug some computer parts out of a synth fully hit.

He didn’t have time to unpack allll of that.

It had been months and he still didn’t.

Two years from now, after the Institute turns into a sunken crater in Cambridge and his son is safe and sound. In a house in Sanctuary, Mr. Tall Dark and Handsome shows back up with Deacon of all people.

So I was somewhat inspired by the AUs @shitty-fallout-art would do, triggered my brain to come up with this backwards au. The Backout AU? Fallwards? Backfall? Outwards? Anyways- Some backwards in their goals, some backwards in their origins. Brain is still swirling with it.

Piper is either a secret informant for the Institute, or she gave up being a reporter after it resulted in the death of her dad.

MacCready is a Mercenary-turned-Gunner. Maybe lost Duncan to ferals and Lucy is sick and dying, their relationship is relationshit after losing Duncan, but he's still trying to find a cure for her and using his Gunner connections. This also kind of makes it make sense why he'd be fine about staying in the Commonwealth after getting the cure and being open for romance. Not completely but still. And it would make the Gunners a joinable faction, maybe

Maybe X6-88 is still a courser, but he's one who actually has his own mind and thoughts. His goal is to kidnap people for the "perfect society".

Curie is a synth who wants to be a Mrs. Nanny because she's tired of thinking so much.

Deacon was a member of the Railroad, until he lost his wife to a malfunctioning synth, and became part of the University Point Deathclaws.

Nick was a detective but sooner or later was oucasted and either left to rot amongst junk, or the Institute took him back in to help him.

Preston leaves the Minutemen to be a simple farmer.

Danse might have found out he was a synth, and joined the BoS in hopes to hide and even forget his identity.

Shaun will still be a child, and believes synths are equal people. And/Or the Institute actually wants synths to have free thought, the goal is to restart society underground and make free-thinking immortal people with the synths, which is their reason to kidnap people. I don't want to take them away from being villains, but I do want to make it so that their delusions of kidnapping and killing people for turning into synths to be more justifiable, I guess.

Cait maybe was a chem-addicted fighter whose parents gave her to Tommy because they couldn't feed her, and she ends up getting clean and finding her parents? Kinda similar to the Pauper in the Barbie Princess & The Pauper, tbh.

Dunno about Strong, Hancock, Sole, or Dogmeat though. Then there's the Railroad, Minutemen, and BoS stuff. Railroad and Minutemen might be more thriving this switch-around? And maybe the RR is for synths who escaped because they have the memories of the families they were taken from and see the situation as so wrong.

This whole idea would need tweaking and more thought, some doesn't feel like it's backwards and more of a switch or opposites thing. But characters having their stories made backwards or flip-flopped would be interesting!

If I weren't working on the fanfic with the vampire idea, I'd work on this instead.

cringe is dead so i wanted to tell you i have this super involved au that i've been crafting in my head where x6-88 gets shot in the head courier 6 style and it breaks his relay chip so he gets stuck on the surface, and the institute decides its a waste of resources to get him back. i know in canon if you 100% his affection he won't mind the institute being blown up. he and my ss go on long trips to get rid of as many raiders as possible while she gives him therapy.

OOHHH thats fun! i like the different ways ppl explore x6 and him coping with the institute and all that entails.

i like that some of the glitches/oversights that fallout came baked with end up being inchresting characterization stuff (hancock dies if you tell him to leave with full affinity bc he gets marked non essential, x6 not going hostile when you blow up the institute when ur with the railroad bc of quest hierarchies, etc)

There were still times when Deacon saw a kid and felt guilty towards Eiden, and lately, he had been around a certain ten-year-old a lot.

“You know full well my father was cheating, had been cheating, and would have continued to cheat if he’s not dead, D. I had been avoiding talking to him for two years by then. It wasn’t the best thing I could do but hey, at the age of I saw the world more black-and-white-ly than the current me, and I still don’t like him,” Eiden half grinned, and the older man could tell it was of the amused sort. “My mom, though.” The grin faded.

“I—” Deacon tried.

“I used to wear this little sweater she bought,” the younger man cut him off, “it was a nice sweater, soft and warm. Loved it. It was a baby blue colour with some floral patterns. Always thought it was cute. But other boys said it was a girl’s sweater, and thereby call me things. She never let me join UP Deathclaw, wasn’t planning to. My mom.”

Deacon waited for a beat, then said: “I’m sorry.”

“What for? We murdered your wife.”

“You didn’t do anything. You were eleven.”

“You were twenty-six, and I’m alive,” Eiden knocked their shoulder together, and the tension broke.

Eiden offered to look at Shaun’s programming and inner structure, because several agents, including the tech himself, could swear to whatever’s still up there that the kid has grown. The technician would be the first to admit Railroad couldn’t possibly understand all the Institute technologies in the foreseeable future, but he and Tinker Tom combined together should be able to work something out of the prototype. They needed the kid’s consent, though, and it was a hard issue to address with Shaun. Then Eiden suggested that he could do it.

It wasn’t like Deacon didn’t know where he was coming from, but there was just not a single way to discuss this with Sole without basically recounting his whole life story to them, so that was a hard pass. Eiden gave up without too much fuss.

“But someone has to talk to him,” he said defiantly.

“We’ll talk to Sole,” Deacon promised, “let Nick do it. Let X6 do it. Hell, let Danse do it.”

“Alright, alright, I get the idea,” the boy began to smile.

“We can make dinner for the kid after Danse properly scares him and they both start to cry. Maybe even take him to a toy shop.”

“That’s a bit mean,” and they both started laughing.

It was probably a bit too mean for Eiden’s good conscience, because he went to Sanctuary Hill the next time Danse came around, brought Shaun lots of little mechanisms and spare parts, and cooked Deathclaw egg omelette and Brahmin steaks for everyone. Danse eyed the food suspiciously while Sole dig in.

“How did you obtain the eggs?” He asked.

“Plasma mines and a stick of dynamite. The rifle wasn’t even much involved,” Eiden shrugged.

“Mmm, it’s good,” said Sole, “so what’s the occasion?”

“I — was bloodthirsty the other day and am in the mood of cooking today?”

“Try again,” Sole suggested.

Okay, judging by Deacon’s knowledge of how good Eiden could lie, this was planned. Cunning little bastard. Good to have him on his side.

Danse looked sick, and Sole was reassuring him they were going to do it really nicely and gently, also definitely on another day and Danse didn’t even have to do it.

“No actually, I think you could do it,” Eiden said calmly, “Shaun likes you, Danse.”

“I’m not — it’s not — I’m not dealing with my newly revealed identity very well,” said Danse.

“Who is, though.” Some silence. Deacon glanced at the tech. “Seriously, you’re a good person. You’re more than capable to handle yourself. You help people. Who cares about the rest around here? Don’t put yourself into those neat labelled boxes; no one should, with you or to Shaun.”

“What he said,” Deacon added helpfully. Don’t be a hypocrite, he thought very loudly, and thank you.

Late Teens Sole

A while ago I got an ask that essential asked something along the lines of whether or not I would get along with the companions. I started thinking about that again which got me thinking about how the companions would react to someone my age being the Sole Survivor (Shaun isn’t their kid). We’ve all seen aus where Sole is a literal child, but not one where their barely an adult, so I decided to take care of that. Codsworth, Dogmeat, and Strong are excluded because I’m not sure how much of a difference there would be.

Cait: She is incredibly impressed as she watches the kid blast through the raiders. She would feel bad for them, having to go through everything at such a young age, but she would also feel jealous. Though they had lost it, they had everything she had ever had. She would end up trying to keep them from falling down the path she did.

Curie: She would be incredibly worried about them. Scientifically, she knows that a teenager can’t handle all of this, and when she becomes a synth she feels a lot of empathy, being overwhelmed with emotions herself.

Danse: Would be so worried about them running around the wastes by themselves, and would do his absolute damnedest to mentor them. Might form a little bit of a parent/child relationship.

Deacon: Pretty similar to Danse, but he would be a little more worried. He knows that people at that age are at a high risk for getting into some bad shit. He would do his best to get them to join the Railroad so he can keep a proper eye on them. He doesn’t want to see them end up as a raider, Gunner, etc. He ends up being more like an uncle than a dad.

Hancock: At first, he doesn’t think much of it. A random teen stumbling into Goodneighbor is nothing new, but as they start getting into more and more trouble he starts to get worried. He realizes that he may not be the best influence, but there are too many Gunners and Raiders that hang around. Ends up stepping in to make sure they don’t end up joining a group they regret. They don’t need a repeat of MacCready.

MacCready: He’d be a little confused at first. Normally people in that age range don’t hire mercs. He’d be a bit weirded out too. By the time he was their age he had already been a merc for two years and Duncan had been born. They aren’t that much younger than him, so otherwise there wouldn’t be that much of a difference. 

Nick: Dad mode. He 100% does his best to look after them. He knows how hard it is to wake up alone in the wastes, and he has seen so many young people go down the wrong path because they had no one to depend on. He could always use a new partner. 

Piper: I seriously don’t think she could be that old, and is at most two years older than Mac. I think she’s younger than him. The only difference would be is that she isn’t used to being around someone her own age. The two people she is around the most are Nat and Nick.

Preston: Instead of making them general, he makes them his second in command. He sees his younger self in them, and ends up mentoring them unconsciously. Making sure they stay out of trouble does wonders for himself. 

X6: Is even more wary of them, because why would Father trust someone so young? He’ll be even more impressed when they succeed. Other than that there won’t be as much as a difference since he sees the danger they could get themselves into as more of a risk to the Institute than themselves.

Imagine an AU where Sole turns out to be a Synth created by Father to take over the Institute after him, with all of their pre-War memories being a fabrication. How do you think the companions would react?

Cait: She needs some time to think on this… alone. Fuck. This is kinda having her rethink her life, a little. She hates synths. But she can’t deny that she’s never hated Sole. Maybe things are a little more complicated with synths than she realized… could this really be true?

Curie: She thinks it is a surprise, certainly. In fact, she laughs! All of this time she has been looking to Sole as her mentor and guide in all things human, when really, Sole was never human themselves. How strange life can be. To Curie… Sole is still the model of humanity they always were.

Danse: Well, for once he can say, I know exactly what that feels like. He’s dedicated, more so than ever, to be there for Sole as they come to terms with their identity. He wants to be there for them in the same way they were there for him.

Deacon: Woah. Talk about one he wasn’t expecting. No one at HQ is gonna believe him. He’s got tons of questions! There’s so much he wants to ask that he’s never had the guts to ask Glory. To him, this only makes their part in the saga of the Railroad that much more epic!

Hancock: He thinks it’s pretty remarkable that pretty much the best, most heroic and humane person he’s met in the Commonwealth isn’t really human at all. He’s sure there’s some message about irony and humanity in there… but he doesn’t prove far enough to find it.

Gage: He doesn’t much care. Obviously, Sole isn’t there to further the gains of the institute, since they had no idea themselves. They still know how to get shit done, how to keep people in line, so at the end of the day, does it really matter?

MacCready: He’s shocked, and full of stupid questions for them. Like, do they need to still eat and sleep and pee n stuff?? And it’s like MacCready. You’ve seen me do all of those things.

Nick Valentine: He knows what it’s like to have fabricated memories, to have your identity kicked out from under you in a way you can’t ever quite recover from. He’s there for them if they need him.

Old Longfellow: He becomes a touch wary, withdrawn. If Cap’n was one of those imposters all along, what did that really mean for the two of them? He’ll still back their corner, any day of the week, but he has some thinking to do.

Piper: This is kinda incredible. And although she knows practically everything about them already from all the time spent travelling, she wants another interview. A synth with pre-war memories? She hasn’t seen that since Nicky.

Preston: To him, the General is still the General. It doesn’t change what good they’ve done for the Commonwealth, that they chose to help when they could’ve easily walked away. Their humanity hasn’t detracted from their nobility.

X6-88: There are few things that truly surprise X6, but for once, his silence is from being rendered speechless. Suppose the two of them have more in common than he realized. Maybe that’s why he likes them.

Codsworth: Well… as far as he’s considered, they’re still the master of the house. What’s left of it. They kept him company, risked life and limb to find young Shaun. He may be a machine himself, but he knows enough to tell that the things they felt upon emergence were real. He’ll still be proud to serve them.

Strong: Strong doesn’t understand. Puny human isn’t actually a human at all? Doesn’t matter. As long as leader has strength, Strong doesn’t care what they call themselves.

Dogmeat: He doesn’t really understand why everyone is acting different about Sole now! Nothing is different about Sole. Still smells the same, still throws ball good, still gives good pets.

First off, what are your rules for requesting? Second of all, I understand if you don't want to allow people to use anon as sometimes there is hate, but people tend to feel more comfortable requesting if they are allowed to be anonymous. Currently, your asks don't allow for that.

Honestly, my flirtations with AUs are pretty tame. I’ve had a Fallout 4 coffee shop AU kicking around in my head for a while: 

The Sole Survivor is a new hire barista after a long period out of work mourning their newly-deceased spouse

Preston is the exhausted coffee shop manager who desperately wants someone else to take over his job

Deacon and the Railroad members are a group of local restaurant employees that are trying to sneak leftover food and bakery items to the city’s homeless population after hours, flying in the face of the city government’s adamant refusal to acknowledge and address the issue

Father is the coffee shop owner who thinks the homeless are a blight on the city, and X6-88 is his nephew that drops in every now and then to make the baristas feel like they’re being watched

Danse and the Brotherhood of Steel members are cops

Nick Valentine is still a private investigator, but he used to be a cop until he came to his senses

Piper Wright works at the coffee shop too, but she keeps a divisive blog on the side

Obviously it’s not fleshed out at all, but I daydream about it sometimes and trying to find interesting story parallels to real life. I also adore soul mate AUs, particularly the ones that incorporate tattoos: I wrote a fun little short for a challenge way back when, largely inspired by a Mass Effect fic I read once upon a time, and I was flirting with writing a Cyberpunk 2077 fic that incorporates the same idea. Maybe about how the Relic chip with Johnny Silverhand’s engram on it corrupts V’s soul mate tattoo along with everything else? Still workshopping that, but hey, Atompunk, Cyberpunk... can’t go wrong with more punk settings!

I'm a big fan of statement openers, just a general observation about the situation about to play out. These are either backed up later in the story or theyre immediately disproven

additional just cause i noticed it, im about 50/50 about establishing who the story is about in the first sentence, usually i can go a whole paragraph before telling the reader who im talking about

Fallout Vampire AU

Someone needs to write a story where the Institute is actually a secret vampire society

People get kidnapped They get replaced with new versions of themselves Those new versions don't age Sometimes those new versions are used to take people to the Institute to be replaced, or just killed (I think?)

The BoS would be turned into, or even replaced as, an anti-vampire group. With the religious tones, that especially fits.

The Railroad would be understanding that some vampires do not want to cause harm.

The idea of Nick being a vampire is awesome.

X6 would honestly fit as a vampire.

Don't know how it would work for Curie though, maybe a tired soulless vampire willingly inherits the soul in her Miss Nanny bot? In that case, maybe instead Nick also became a vampire this way?

Danse would deal with the crisis of finding out he's a vampire.

Deacon (possibly) was a former vampire hunter, until he found out his wife was one.

Dunno if Super Mutants and Ghouls will be the same or replaced with something else though.

Doodled the wasteland wives!!

I had a whole post ready and then tumblr crashed and i lose it... but bro when i let go of Tod Howards heteronormative expectations and let myself replace husband with wife my whole world opened up. So now we have my sole survivors Amara and Abigail. They miss each other dearly and are desperate to find their son.

))I have a whole au for Abigail´s playthrough where Father makes a synth Amara before he makes synth Shaun but she becomes self aware so he shuts her down and hides her in Advanced Systems. Synth Shaun finds her when he goes poking around the institute at night and turns her on and when X6 finds them he keeps their secret and eventually helps them both escape via the emergency relay and they go find the Railroad and eventually run into Abigail and there’s so much angst Jesus Christ))

Askdjlfsd thank you!!! As far as the timeline goes, it gets a liiitle bit messy because some of it branches off for alternate paths. All of the paths are in my original "companions find out that sole is a courser" post. But for the majority of synth!sole stuff I write, it all follows the same timeline:

Sole goes to the Institute with the aid of the Minutemen and pulls some data from the inside, as per canon.

The Institute immediately realizes what has happened and who they are, so shit hits the fan. It's decided that they can not be allowed to go unsupervised, so they start trying to find a subtle way to keep sole monitored at all times.

Sole returns home and hands the info off to the Minutemen. They decrypt it and find out sole's true identity. Word quickly spreads throughout the Commonwealth.

Piper publishes the findings in Publick Occurences, and sole is quickly banned from entering Diamond City. Ellie pitches a fit and starts boycotting the paper.

Sole is banned from Goodneighbor. Even Hancock gets the news, and the ban comes down fast and hard.

With sole's ban from Goodneighbor, the Railroad moves Amari out and into the Castle for protection. Only sole knows what she's doing there really; everyone else thinks the Memory Den has just moved.

Sole and their remaining allies regroup in Sanctuary Hills. This is where they meet up with Nick, and the two of them start traveling together.

Nick and sole visit Diamond City. This is the synth!sole post where they run into Piper at the gates. Meanwhile, on the home front, Preston is assembling the Minutemen, taking stock of what's left.

Sole returns to the Institute, getting a better look at what's going on, also getting to know X6. He begins to question what it actually means to be a synth.

Nick and Sole visit Goodneighbor, which is the story where Nick pistolwhips the mayor.

KLEO moves out of Goodneighbor and into Sanctuary. She is *technically* now part of the Minutemen but it's heavily implied this is part of her role with the Railroad.

Sole decides to destroy the Institute. They activate the evacuation order, but the whole thing goes up in flames and the news starts to run wild.

Piper publishes her article in the Publick, singing sole's praises. Preston brings a copy back to sole so they can read it. Hancock decides to visit. Both of these are in the apology story.

Piper and Hancock start to try to make amends. They open communication. Sole is allowed back into Diamond City and Goodneighbor, though they don't visit.

Piper and Hancock decide to take a risk and visit Sanctuary, which is where sole saves them from a Deathclaw.

Happy ending! Sole lets them back into their life, Nick fixes his broken relationships, and everybody gets to live happily in Sanctuary!

The New Girl

Ugh, me and my endless Fallout 4 OCs. But this one just won’t let me go.

Name: Darcy Adams (formerly G9-33, redesignated M7-33 “Scarlett”)

Codename: Frost

Concept: Synth defector with a mysterious Institute ally

Sympathies: Railroad, Minutemen, Goodneighbor, Mechanist’s Lair, all races (but especially synths and robots)

Occupation: Institute weapons development technician turned synth infiltrator turned Institute defector turned techno-vigilante (phew!)

History: Created a ballistic-ammunition pistol and accessories, including a portable ammunition mill, for use by field agents. Ran afoul of her superiors for both outshining some of them and coming down on the losing side of the Institute energy-versus-ballistic debate. Made the mistake of not backing down.  Was sent to be memory-wiped and reassigned, but someone intervened, and she retained her memories and sense of self. She has no idea who did this but suspects Madison Li, whose true loyalties have always been highly personal.

Given a new face, form and designation, she was sent where she couldn’t cause any more trouble around the labs: Diamond City, where she was supposed to kill and replace a Field barmaid to help observe the developing situation with McDonough potentially being exposed. This happened during the events of Confidence Man. She took one look at Scarlett and Travis together and just...couldn’t go through with it. (Those kids are just too damn cute to wreck their lives). So instead Doc Crocker got a midnight client, and she left the city with another new face.

Since then she’s sworn to live according to her own will and conscience. Mistaken for Sole by Codsworth due to her resemblance to Nora (thanks, Crocker, you unimaginative ass), she befriended him and helped him search for the real Nora. (Of course she had to have her looks changed AGAIN during the process). That done, she helped another robot (Ada) avenge her friends and end a Commonwealth menace. She let Isabel live and eventually befriended her fellow alienated techno-nerd. She helped Preston and company, then set them up in Sanctuary, making close friends with Sturges in the process (though she doesn’t know he’s a synth too). She ran into the Atom Cats quite by accident while salvaging robotics parts and has done them a few solids. Then she overheard a conversation after re-infiltrating Diamond City, and decided to follow the Freedom Trail...

Personality: Brilliant, secretive, calm in a crisis, lots of intellectual confidence (almost to the point of arrogance), a tinkerer who has no problems head-shotting any asshole who aims at her. She has strong ideals tempered with an even stronger pragmatic streak. Tends to infodump on guns, robotics and anything else she’s interested in. Believes synths are superior to humans but that that gives them an obligation to help those less powerful than themselves.

Enemies: Has extensive and very specific criticisms of the Institute which make her wish to steal some of their tech, rescue all generations of synth and all innocent humans, and then raze the place to the ground. Views the Brotherhood as “a fucking tragedy” because of the direction Maxson has taken them, and has no problem killing their members if she catches them attacking innocents of any race...which she has more and more. Sees raiders as a fucking scourge and the attempt to organize them at Nuka World as a danger to the whole Commonwealth.

Notable skills: Gunsmithing, repair, robotics, hacking, stealth, light firearms (pistol build)

Home: Mechanist’s Lair

Faction: In gameplay she cannot decide between Minutemen and Railroad, but her sympathies lie more heavily with the Railroad. Is considering becoming the Minuteman General in part so she can make an alliance happen more smoothly. This will create advantages for both groups, and give the Railroad a great number of new safe houses and plenty of backup.

Appearance: Formerly a bland-faced, gray-eyed blonde, then a dead ringer for Scarlett, then a platinum blonde dead ringer for Nora...to Darcy, she has no real face and form to call her own anymore, as her former ones have bad associations. Her current one is at least a personal choice, but she’s aware she may have to move on from it eventually. She currently has short, neat hair that is the same teal blue as her eyes, sharp features, pale skin, a slim build and a low voice. She looks like she’s in her twenties but has actually been operational for around forty years.

RP availability: open for anything, Commonwealth-based, AU or crossover as long as it isn’t a pure angst-, sex-, or gore-fest. Crack and silliness are always ok.

Notes:

Wears a modded, unmarked Vault Suit and PipBoy under black combat armor; doesn’t dress up very often.

Straight, but has never dated, as she is paranoid and extremely picky.

Her recall code is tied to her old designation, not her new one.

Wishes desperately that X6 wasn’t so goddamn hot.

Hasn’t met most of the companions yet, in part because ingame she prefers to make friends using her robotics workbench, not her social skills.
