easy rain tutorial (ft a wip scene redraw)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
detailed description beneath cut
fill the canvas white and use the glitch effect on it.
after this, select the white space between and either drag it off your screen or just flat out delete it. This should leave the little glitchy bits.
alpha lock your layer, and fill the layer white.
then all you gotta do is motion blur it to what you like and erase rain drops you don't like and add some bouncing droplets.
I'm still working on this wip. happy birthday or something

someone asked me a while ago how I draw slugcats and I wanted to make a huge guide going into how I rationalize their anatomy but I’ve been so busy w college I haven’t been able to touch it in like a month! So I decided to post these few notes I had! One day I’ll get back and make an entire guide but for now have these little notes :)
Animals I tend to gravitate towards for slugcat references are: otters, weasels, cats, and monkeys!
Also this isn’t me saying this is what their anatomy is, more so how I think of it and what landmarks I use when I draw!

^ iterator projection tutorial!! ^
this post follows on from this one made by @prismsoup, intended to cover my slightly more extended process (including post-processing)
step -1 : pre-requisites
this tutorial is designed around clip studio paint for PC because its what i work with. its probable that whatever other program / platform you're using has these features but under different names
i use a rainworld typography font for text. find it here (or do it yourself)
i use scanline textures as a part of this. find them here
step 0 : select a base image
Tumblr media
maps, blueprints and diagrams are favourable due to lots of detail without it derailing into noise. get experimental though, my favourite one came out from a picture of a nebula, and another from a friends factorio screenshot
step 1 : binarise & flip
Tumblr media
this command can be found under edit > tonal correction (D) > binarization. this forces every pixel in the image to be either black or white. adjust its sensitivity to your liking
step 2 : remove background
Tumblr media
add in a black layer below (not just paper layer, as will become important later). wand select the background colour and delete it. if the remaining colour is black, CTRL+I to invert it to white
step 3 : add details
Tumblr media
replace any text with rainworld font or simply remove it. add in blueprints or other complex decals (drawingdatabase is a decent source). during importing remember to binarise (after resizing). for "lower layer" elements such as contour lines create outlines for higher layers to retain clarity
step 4 : add multiply layer(s)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
if you want to have multiple colours, put everything in the "higher" layer into a folder and set the top multiply to clipping above it
step 6 : post processing setup
Tumblr media
copy all existing layers, create a new folder on top, and paste into that folder. right click the folder and "merge selected layers" set the resultant layer to add(glow). copy+paste and hide duplicate for now. from filters > blur apply a guassian blur with a strength of 130-170 (this creates the base bloom layer). set opacity to ~50%
step 7 : chromatic abberation
Tumblr media
unhide not-blurred layer. guassian blur with a strength of 2. duplicate again. select top layer and move 1px up and 1px left (with arrow keys). CTRL+U then change the hue by 30. select bottom layer and move 1px down and 1px right, CTRL+U then change hue by -30.
stronger chromatic abberation can come from stronger gaussian blur and more change in hue
step 8 : scanlines
Tumblr media
add the scan lines on top, invert so that they're white and set to add(glow). copy a multiply layer over it and make sure clipping is on. decrease layer opacity to ~10%. if it does not cover the whole image initially, paste more in and merge them together into one layer
tada! you now have one iterator projection. if you want to give it an extra affect, re-import the final PNG and filter > distort > convert to panorama. set distortion to 10 and scale to 101 (note that this drastically blurs the image)

How do you get that shiny texture in all your drawings??? The only texture I have been able to figure out Is old gross moldy paper(which i spam alot)
Usually I don't use texture at all, just sketch and flat colors. Maybe it is lighting in general what are you talking about?
Now I and my assistant Monk will show you three easy ways to make things shiny :)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Use different types of layers. I think every app for drawing has if not exactly these options, but at least something similar. I use SAI2 and Autodesk Sketchbook (for smartphone)

do you have any advice on drawing slugcats/scavs? i love how you draw both... sincerely...
i'm rising from the dead just to answer this one even though i'm not much of an adviser or a tutorial guy x) my style is not consistent and i just flow with most of things
but here's some tutorial-ish things
Tumblr media
slugcats are just...blobs at this point in my style, i don't use many additional lines or smth for them
it's like this one "how to draw a rat" meme where there's only two steps: "draw any shape" "done"
scavengers are more complicated tho!
Tumblr media
they have actual anatomy and as stated - i'm still figuring it out x) but at least it's fun
here's some other scavs i drew for a little example - a random one and kinda an OC of mine
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i hope this helps even if just a little bit, i really have no idea how to explain my drawing process or give drawing advice :")

baffling unused room i found in rw's files. would have been in the exterior. but where???? underhang???? im guessing this was a very early concept because it really doesn't suit any of UW's subregions. still. quite mysterious

trying out making 2d animations in blockbench, using textures i made... about a year and a half ago!
obviously there's other programs that are meant for this, but that'd require, like... actually downloading and learning a new program....

how do oyu draw scvaenegrs theyre soooo shaped i love them....
GYAHAHAHA!!!!!!! TUTORIAL TIME!!!!!!
Tumblr media
first things first! basic anatomy!
These guys are somewhat monkey-shaped. They have deep chests, long arms, and short legs. They usually move by knuckle-walking, using their arms to swing their legs forward as if they're using crutches.
Scavs have eartlers (which i think are technically horns lol), funny whiskers/sensory frills, and frills/quills on their backs. I also give them ears because I think it looks cute.
A note about their tails: scav tails vary in length (many are tailless), and their tails are thinner than slugcat tails. I imagine their tails aren't as important for balance as it is for slugcats.
Tumblr media
From the side, my scavengers have sorta egg-shaped heads; they don't have a very prominent snout. They do, however, have some gnarly teeth - baboon like, but better suited for carnivory? Idk honestly
Scavs have long, 3-fingered hands and 2-toed feet. Some scavengers have a third toe on their feet, but it's vestigial. Their palms/soles are hairless for better gripping and are usually lighter than the surrounding fur.
Tumblr media
Variations!!! Scavs are super diverse and I highly recommend taking many screenshots of them. I didn't draw anything for elite scavengers here.
Horns range from nubs to large branches. Some scavengers have horns on their cheeks as well as on the top of their heads.
Whiskers can range from being absent to looking like beards.
Scavenger eyes range in size, narrowness, and angle. Pupils can be absent, dark-colored, or light-colored.
For colors, scavengers are usually gray or brown with darker points. Light and bright-colored scavs are unusual but they do appear!
Proportions and quills vary, and that can have some hilarious results. I've seen scavengers with stick-thin arms, others with tons of big quills, etc.
Scavenger body language is pretty complex. I recommend checking the wiki and watching them in-game to study how they move and act. Their quills do seem to be an important part of how they communicate, since frightened or startled scavengers vibrate their quills!
Hopefully this stuff is helpful!

Can you please give us a tutorial on how you draw slugcats?
I'll try my best to explain!
Firstly, here are the base shapes which I use for a general scug
Tumblr media
The tail is wholely attached to their body, they are basically snake shaped with legs and arms on the sides. They are mainly two circles with an always hunched over spine.
They also vary a lot in body parts.
Tumblr media
I labelled these as omni/carnivorous variants, but they are not strict. They are just most often found on those specific types of scugs. For example, I draw Hunter (carnivorous) with the normal hands and Batnip (my slugpup oc, omnivorus) with tiny claws. I think genetics vary.
Of course this applies to hind legs too.
Tumblr media
Spearmaster was genetically altered to be more dexterous in their hands and to have opposable thumbs on their hind legs, this is impossible naturally.
Tumblr media
Spearmaster's head is also curved upwards because their lack of bottom jaw caused their nose bridge to sink. This is not normal at all and most slugcats have sturdy-looking head variations.
Also, here is the difference between a slugpup and an adult.
Tumblr media
And here are some extra tips and tricks.
Tumblr media
I like making a show of how flowy their bodies are.
Tumblr media
They can lean on their forearms, and they do when they run. Thats why the forearms are pretty long.
Tumblr media
When they walk, they dont completely untuck their hind legs, which gives them a slightly cartoony feel.

Gourmand have you actually killed a lizard by falling on them from a tall height?
Tumblr media
"Oh yeah, many times! Pinks and blacks especially! It's very easy to lure them onto a tall pole, where they can't really dodge. And they're never quick enough to jump off, before you land on them.
Mushrooms are an optional way to make the moment easier… and a whole lot more fun!"

hellooo I do have a question !! If you don’t mind !!!
so I’ve seen a few of your traditional animations and I’m (well first off I’m IN LOVE with them they’re done SO WELL) just curious if you have any tips ?
I was thinking about trying a small one of my own but . I’ve never done . anything like this before .
Just something like if you have a trick for drawing things the same size , or how to draw stuff in motion
obviously practice is a factor !!! But figured I’d at least try an ask ! anything helps !!! Your stuff always looks amazing hehe <333
Dawww thank you I'm glad you like what I do
I have uploaded quite a bit of traditional(mostly rw related) gifs and I think here I can attempt to show something akin to a tutorial. At the very least these are the steps I use for animating on paper
So first off for making small gifs I usually use a single sheet of paper and separate it into a number of evenly sized parts by using a ruler and **LIGHTLY** tracing with a pencil. My papers are 9" by 12" so measuring the portions is usually easy. How big/how many parts you separate your sheet into depends on how many frames are in your gif
Tumblr media
Then we start with the sketches. For me it helps with keeping the animation smooth and the same size by using shapes(especially circles for me but it depends on what you wanna draw). Be aware that this might be considerably difficult for anyone with little to no experience with animating
Tumblr media
Then you wanna get the simple sketch done using the shapes as a work-around to draw details while keeping the animation smooth. Be sure to keep the sketches LIGHT so you can draw over them or erase any mistakes you make without them being too obvious in the final product
Tumblr media
Next it's time to work on lineart(and shading if you wanna but personally I don't prefer to do that too much when it comes to animations)
Tumblr media
Now it's time to actually compile the frames. You can choose to screenshot each and every frame and compile them in order on an animation app or website(like Flipaclip for example) but for me when it comes to short gifs it's faster to use Capcut and simply separate the image into six parts while zooming in appropriately for each frame
Tumblr media
And you could end it here by making this into a gif but me personally I prefer to use Exgif to turn the mp4 into a gif since it has a higher quality(and also to adjust the frames and crop the gif to your hearts content)
Tumblr media
And then that's it! Enjoy your gif lmao
Tumblr media
And in the meantime also enjoy dancing Moonie
