So I have a theory that Desuhiko's forte is not necessarily what he thinks it is. Let me explain: So Desuhiko explains during one of his gumshoe gabs that he got really good at doing makeup and costuming as a kid which would explain why it is understandable that his forte is, as far as he is aware; a disguise based forte. However the main thing his forte hinges on is the one thing he almost always has either nearby or on his person: his backpack, which can fit not only him but at-least one other person inside and an untold number of wigs, clothes, shoes, accessories, assorted containers of makeup, cosmetic prosthetics, voice changers, his guitar and presumably anything needed to make and fix said costumes and costume parts; which for those who don't know, is A LOT of stuff (without including potential backups of anything) like at the absolute minimum a 20ft x 20ft x 12ft room's worth of stuff and thats with all of the clothes and wigs being folded and vacuum sealed. In that same gumshoe gab he also explains that he was a very shy kid and got good at hiding, and a backpack that can hold as much stuff as a living room would make a pretty good hiding place. How does this tie into his forte not being a disguise based forte? Well it's a little tricky to explain but I will do my best. My theory is that Desuhiko's forte is technically the ability to access what is known as "Hammer-space" through his bag, which is the thing that a fair few characters have where they just pull an item they need out of the space behind their back as if they were hiding it in an invisible, weightless backpack or when they are digging through a visible backpack and they are able to lean more of themselves into it than would physically make sense, more or less making his bag a modified bag of holding from dnd; but in a way that makes sense for the universe he is in and where he is at his current level of capability as no other character is shown to have this ability at all times besides Shinigami who is more toon than not. Technically Yuma and Makoto only have it in the mystery labyrinth due to Yuma's ties to Shinigami and Makoto's ties to Yuma but none of the others can or atleast show that the are able to access "Hammerspace" even in the mystery labyrinth. But Desuhiko probably thought that it was a disguise based forte because using his makeup skills to solve mysteries that required stealth and disguises was what he knew he was good at and is what he seems to be the most proud of. It doesn't really make much sense as a forte in other ways either, as a forensic forte is described as and shown to be a supernatural ability such as being able to see into the past and view a crime scene as it was when it was first viewed by an outsider like Hallara or more or less going ghost like Vivia; And while being able to do costuming to that degree is certainly an excellent talent I'm not entirely convinced it could be considered supernatural. I have also noticed that a detective's forte tends to match their personality as well, borrowing Hallara again, they much like their forte; are more serious and unbiased. While Desuhiko is more than a bit cartoony in his behavior but upon digging deeper his personality is not entirely what someone would expect so it would make sense if he were to have an equally cartoony and unexpected forte, which in some instances costuming could fall under cartoony (such as dressing in drag for potentially comedic shenanigans) but it's not quite unexpected, with all the times he talks about being a star and how he usually gets put on mysteries that require disguises it would be a little too expected and obvious for someone like Desuhiko to have a forte that just boils down to being able to disguise himself and others as well as he does. So I suspect that instead Desuhiko has some level of toon-force and can access "Hammerspace" to a certain extent for now.

TLDR: For various reasons I suspect that Desuhiko's true forensic forte is access to "Hammerspace" rather than "Disguise".

Hat Trick

The Forte of Maximus Wellington, he is able to take out anything missing or hidden from places and crime scenes.

Even though he is able to take out things, he's not able to take out any living things or large objects. Only small and non-living ones.

His pet dove, Terry, resides in the hat. But not in the pocket dimension that his forte uses the hat for. It has a accustomed home of it's own there.

I made a lot of design iterations and I'm still not sure of their outside clothes, but I'm pretty satisfied with their indoor clothes for now.

I usually don't take character design, especially when it comes to clothing, seriously so I'm pretty happy with what I've come up with! There are so many designs I tried out...

Ashen Dawnbreaker

A Master Detective send to Kanai Ward to solve Kanai Ward's Ultimate Secret. Currently, they are living in the Sun & Moon Hotel and work for the Nocturnal Detective Agency with the rest of the Master Detectives dispatched to Kanai Ward and survived the Massacre.

Usually quiet and reserved, they don't seek out mysteries to solve unlike other detectives. Opting to rather chill in the Agency with Vivia and Yakou and read things on their phone. (Which they thankfully were able to smuggle inside of Kanai Ward under the Peackeepers' noses along with gel pepper spray)

With an effective Forte like theirs, they're not too keen on doing actual detective work. Using their Forte to solve the case once they have taken a picture of the crime scene and know the time of death of the victim. They don't see the point of trying when their Forte would just do all the work.

Frankly, it makes them feel like they don't actually deserve to be called a Master Detective despite being one unlike the other Master Detectives.

They are a bit of foodie however. Buying snacks and bringing it to the Agency when needed. And even trying their hands on cooking for the Agency despite not being a great cook. (It's not the best ever food, but it's delicious and edible even if it does need a bit of rice to counteract the heavy flavors. But it's certainly better than whatever Yuma makes)

...weirdly enough... they don't touch any of the meat buns for some reason.... Never having once taken the duty to buy Yakou his meat buns.

Also, they're Autistic. Which is a very big part of their character.

Digitalized History

A Forte that allows the User to see the past movements of living beings in a set area that has been digitally photographed in a limited amount of time.

They can see the silhouettes of living beings as they move around, however they are unable to see their identity. And objects not captured in the digital photograph won't appear when they use their Forte. Making them unable to see any objects that were moving or being used during that time.

Currently, they use their phone to capture pictures of locations in Kanai Ward for later use. Changing the time and date, and setting a timer on their phone before they use their Forte to give them focus.

Without their phone, their innate ability to see the past movements of living beings won't be as effective as a Forte. Being too unfocused to focus on a specific time and location to use.

The current limit of their Forte usage is 30 minutes.

Overuse of their Forte gives them headaches and light sensitivity.

LOADING SCREEN TRIVIA

Ashen's Lollipop The only lollipop they buy from is a specific brand, chocolate milk and strawberry milk being their favorite flavors. They loathe other lollipop brands and never try them.

Ashen's Coffee Despite not needing coffee daily to function, they're very particular with how they make their coffee. Especially the temperature. So they don't trust others to make their coffee for them. Messing up their coffee when they decide to indulge is a surefire way to annoy them.

Ashen's Meals Homecooked meals is a very important thing for them. So despite not being the best cook, they make their own meals when they have the energy and time instead of going to a restaurant. It reminds them of home, and sharing their meals with the Nocturnal Detective Agency is another added bonus.

Ashen's Phone The notes app is filled with writings about past conversations they had with the rest of the Agency. They like reading back on it sometimes.

Ashen's Hair Their natural hair color is violet. However, they dyed their hair black to blend more with the crowd. At least, that's what they tell to others. The underside of their hair isn't dyed, showing the beautiful natural color of their hair.

Ashen's Photos Before they found out about their Forte, they loved taking pictures of nature and the scenery. Especially the sunset sky. However, they're uncomfortable with taking pictures of other people and buildings. They never knew why until they found out about their Forte.

one idea for his Forte that comes to mind is smth called Remote Deactivation , in where he can disable electronic devices granted that theyre somewhat in his proximity (not sure what the distance cut-off would be)

I played with the idea of him being to also activate electronic devices but I figured not to because it wouldn't be reflective of his personality.... hes not a very active working person

altho now that I think of it Charlie fits more as a forte-less detective lmao

Raincode Ship Week Day 5: Swap - Desuhiko x Yuma

Ok so tldr, I may or may not have fallen in love with this drawing while I was doing it so much so that I'm actively working on a whole forte swap au now-

I can't help but imagine how off the wall chaotic things would be if Desuhiko was the protag instead of Yuma- like Shinigami's experience would either be the most fun she's ever had or hell on earth, having to deal with an amnesiac who knows fuck all about himself except how to be dirty minded.

Also I think it'd be funny if swap Yuma was a famous musician trying to break in to the crime fighting world, instead of a detective trying to become a superstar. The WDO probably only sent him to Kanai Ward hoping he'd die cuz they don't want him around but he's a roach of a creature who just won't stay down!

This post contains spoilers for the final Chapter of Raincode.

This is my idea for what Yuma looked like pre-canon. It is based on my headcanons for him and his backstory.

Now Yumas age during the game isn’t really revealed to us. But since the game really pushes both Kurumi (who I’m assuming is at least 18 since she’s in her final year) and Shinigami as love interests, I’m choosing to believe he’s 18~19. Because if he’s not, either he or Shinigami has to be a creep interested in teenagers. (Personally I’m not all that big of a fan of either ship but that’s irrelevant).

Now Homunculi stop aging once they’ve reached maturity, so Makoto can be the exact same age as Yuma (physically I mean). He was created 3 years before canon, so if he was created when Yuma was let’s say 15, they would both have grown into 18 year olds during the games events.

All this to explain that I suspect Yuma was a child when he started his career at the WDO. As I mentioned he’s probably not older than 20 (I think). But I think him joining the WDO, finishing his training, being a detective AND actually being number one in only 2 years time would be a little too crazy.

My theory is that he developed his forte at a young age (between like 8-10) and the WDO heard about that and took interest. Something like Yuma meeting a master detective and accidentally copying his forte, said detective then informing the WDO. We know that the Unified government has authority over the WDO and since they cloned him, they clearly have an interest in number one.

No information about number one can be known by the rest of the world, so they either paid off Yumas family or he never had any to begin with (they also could have killed his family but I think this is unlikely). I’m leaning more towards the orphan idea, since that would be most convenient story wise. Also, post-canon him doesn’t seem to make any moves to meet his family (tbf we only see him for a bit then but it’s all I’ve got).

This would make him the ideal number one for the WDO, he would already have a forte and it would be easy to make him disappear from people’s lives. If he then also demonstrates a superior level of intelligence he would literally make the perfect number one.

Granted, these things don’t have to all be correct for him be number one. This is just my theory for the how and why he did become number one. And this is the theory that is present in my work that has either pre or post-canon Yuma (none of which I’ve finished, my bad).

Now for my actual designs

I don’t want to ramble much longer so I’ll keep it short.

- For tiny Yuma, I liked the idea of Yuma having Marie-Antoinette-syndrome (alopecia areata diffuse). This is a condition that turns the hair gray prematurely. Now it is often assumed that stress plays a role in the condition. So I thought the changing of Yumas hair color throughout his career would be a good story telling tool to demonstrate how this job has psychologically aged him. It could also physically demonstrate the stress of the job and in a way explain the mental state that caused him to fail to stop the actions that led to what happened to Kanai Ward.

-Number one, he got his outfit from the fake number one excluding the sunglasses and that yellow shawl. I based his hair off of that of Izuru Kamakura. It is also meant to accentuate his blindness to everything that lead to the situation in Kanai Ward. The idea is also that when disguising himself as a trainee, he cut off his hair and, along with his resignation, cut off his responsibilities as number one.

Ogawa Haruto: simultaneously the best and worst detective in existence.

he's my main guy in my danganronpa/ raincode au thing that i've got going on.

he was born with a forte that let's him hear the thoughts of other people, their hopes, their dreams, their deepest darkest secrets and plans, all he needs to do is make eye contact with his target.

he was also born with severe autism. eye contact physically hurts him, he struggles to understand the thoughts of other people, and he has echolalia, he relies on repeating words that are spoken to him to communicate.

he wants to be a great detective more than anything else, to use his abilities to help others and make the world a better place. however, that really isn't something he can do on his own. he's frustrated to no end that he cant, that he needs help in investigations, that he needs help to get up and get dressed and get a train ticket to the crime scene and talk to the police at the crime scene and apply what he learns from his forte to the case. but he puts up with the frustration just so he can do good in the world, because being a 'good kid', an 'easy to deal with kid' is all that he knows. he smiles, and he helps people and he puts up with things that hurt him because that's who he is, a 'good kid'.

Meet my raincode oc/persona: Darling Lovestruck!! (yeah cringe ik)

Forte: Hyper Empath (basically she can feel the emotions of people around her, however when using his forte she feels the emotions of everyone with in a certain vicinity and it's more of a jumbled overwhelming mess, he has to concentrate really hard to pinpoint a target's feelings (when focusing on one person she can also detect like basic thoughts). Using her forte gives him a massive fucking headache though, and he can't use it for longer than 5 minutes without getting a nose bleed and any longer than 15 she'll pass out.

I'll make a more like fleshef out ref later this was just to get her outfit planned out <3

Forensic Forte: Memory Perception

Soul can peer into the memories of people from a first person perspective. Soul can also view the dead’s memories, but the amount of time he can view decreases the longer the victim has been dead ; 24 hours after death, Soul can no longer view the memories. Soul has to physically touch the person to see their memories, even if it's just a bump in the shoulder or a poke on the cheek (he has to consciously choose someone to see their memories).

About:

Part of a group of rogue master detectives who are ex-members of the WDO. All of them have either left of their own accord or have been kicked out.

Soul left the organization due to not agreeing with their principles or how they operate.

The ex-members of the WDO end up joining a detective agency affiliated with Amaterasu Corporation (hence why the badge is a combo of the WDO and Amaterasu logos)

The agency is there so that Amaterasu can say “we don’t need the WDO’s detectives, we have our own capable ones.

Soul doesn’t necessarily agree with Amaterasu’s principles either, but says he would rather perish than be associated with the WDO.

Childhood friends with Luna Luckytune

Was still on the quiet side as a child, but was more optimistic. He has since grown jaded and anti-social. Does have a sense of care for his other members however.

Will I actually bother drawing all of the ex-WDO detectives....we'll see...

some information about them:

Halara Nightmare:

— 24 y. o — uses pistols and throwing knives — teaches Yuma how to use weapons and hunt (given that Yuma will pay for all the training in the future) — they have a strong dislike for vampires, but at the same time they still don't trust any of the humans

Desuhiko Thunderbolt:

— 19 y. o. — his main occupation is the production of poisons. almost never killed vampires because he is afraid of blood and corpses — however, thanks to his Forte, he uncovered many vampire hideouts — he carries an ax with him just in case — carries a guitar and, just like in the original, wants to become a star

Fubuki Clockford

— 20 y. o. — can hide and run well — can provide basic first aid — since she often forgets a lot, she mostly helps others with their affairs — she doesn't even know how to use a weapon, but most often vampires run away from her in horror

Vivia Twilight

— 25 y. o. — uses a crossbow and knives — most often you can find him sleeping on a tree or in a dark small place — apart from weapons, the only thing he always takes with him is books — tries to avoid the truth, which might make him feel sorry for vampires

Currently thinking about Makoto actually nursing a forte overuse-induced headache during his fight with Yuma because he used his forte 5 times to forge those letters then again with Yuma to enter the Mystery Labyrinth. It just wasn't obvious during that fight because he had enough painkillers to last him until the end.

Unfortunately for him, the fight didn't end with him getting reaped so after he revealed the truth to Kanai Ward, he's now completely suffering from his headache and also a fever because he forgot to take a bath after being soaked in the rain for so long due to his exhaustion physically, mentally, and emotional.

All the while he has plenty of things on his mind and plenty of work to be done to change things in Kanai Ward for the better.

Let’s round up these Forte talents, just for recordkeeping:

Halara: Postcognition. Can view a crime scene in the past through the first witness’ perspective, within a certain radius of the dead body. (I think there are other details but I can’t remember quite right now).

Desuhiko: Disguise. Can perfectly mimic another person’s body and voice, but is exhausting to perform for too long. He uses a large backpack to perform this action, but it can be conspicuous.

Fubuki: Time Rewind. Can rewind a certain amount of time, but again is exhausting to use too much of, or going back too far. Also cannot rewind past the point it was last rewound to.

Vivia: Spectral Projection. While lying down, he can turn into a ghost form, see and communicate with other (similar) ghost forms, walk through walls and overhear conversations. He cannot touch anything however, and his physical body is prone. He can also ‘sense’ otherworldly things in general, including Shinigami herself.

Yuma: Coelescence. This allows him to 'borrow’ a Forte from another person as long as he holds their hand during their Forte. Once he does, he’s able to bring the person with him to the Mystery Labyrinth, and that person can then interact with Shinigami.

Holding onto that, let’s move on
