Roofing Started

Here's some before shots of the roof (from March 9th):

The roof was covered with plastic to protect the sheathing.

The photos above were taken before the patio had the tongue and grove boards installed. Damn that's a big scrap pile in the back yard!

Chuck came down to start our roof on March 22. Unfortunately the general contractor was not quite ready for the roofing to really start. Luckily, Chuck was able to get the roofing felt down in some areas, but there were eaves missing, parts of the sheathing missing, no skylight curbs, bad weather, and a few other issues that basically caused about a week of delay.

Hey look - the eaves have the first coat of paint on them already!! The first week of roofing there were a couple days of rain. This was pretty frustrating considering it rains less than 40 days a year here. Can't roof in the rain...

It started raining during a meeting on site and in the photo above you can see the roof felt is doing it's job of shedding the water off the roof!

The next day the roofing continued...

You can see the 2 layers of roofing felt here laid over the roof sheathing. The shingles are stacked beyond. It was nice that the local roofing supply house delivers and they have a crane thing on their truck so they were able to lift all the material on the roof so Brett and his Dad didn't have to do that part at least.

Here's a close-up of the felt with more material stacked on the ridge beyond. In this photo above you can see the flashing boot for the water heater vent (that silver thing that looks like an upside down funnel). Well that vent was placed right in front of our new raised front entry roof element. I asked the contractor to move that thing 6' over up the roof so that it doesn't show in the front as prominently.

Arrow on the left is the original location of the water heater vent - there was no way I was going to be ok with that pipe there! Looking at it everyday when I come home... that would have driven me nuts. I also asked them to shorten the plumbing vent over the entry roof (arrow on the right), and luckily it will be chopped back down after the roofing is complete. Speaking of roofing...

look at that roofer!!

He was very nicely trying to show me what color our shingles are... because obviously this is as far as I'm going up that ladder. No roof walking for me, thank you very much.

As I'm sitting at a rain delayed @lhvironpigs baseball game I can't help but be so incredibly grateful for the life I live. I'm not saying everything in my life has been perfect, but I am who I am due to those imperfections and hardships. I am so lucky to live the life I lead. Rain Delay...

So my requests for a dry winter were met with back to back to back winter storms!  Our contractor was supposed to start the roof tear-off on January 20th, but due to the weather forecast he decided to keep the roof on and hold off on that work until after the storm.  That was probably a good idea considering the crazy wind, hail, and rain we got yesterday.  We even got a fun call from our neighbor in the morning that the construction fence around our house blew over during the storm.  I’m just glad no one got hurt.

At least the plastic on the roof didn’t blow off, and possibly even better the porta-potty didn’t blow over either!

Brett stopped by this morning to check on things.  He noticed some ponding in the back yard because we have no drainage back there right now... just a bunch of mud.  He also noticed that our wood fence on the east side of the house was blown off the post foundation footings (because the posts were rotten).  You can kind of see the fence pulling away from the gate on the left side of the top photo above.

I would like to take this moment to point out that about 7 years ago I bought 5 wine barrel halves and planted a bunch of vines in them up against that fence.  I added a wire trellis to that fence for the vines to grow up the fence and captain-know-it-all told me the vines were going to pull the fence down someday.  Well can you guess what’s the only thing that kept that fence with the rotten footings from blowing completely over?  YUP!  The vines!  In-your-face LOL!

Look how pretty those vines were last April when everything was in bloom!  Thank you vines + wire trellis for holding up our fence... and for being beautiful. 

The bummer part is that this weather is creating about a 2 week delay in our project... but we still don’t have a schedule so... it’s hard to know what the real delay is going to be.  Hopefully the contractor gets back out there soon and goes back to work.
