Raku!! This is some silly raku work me and my partner did over the summer with our pottery studio. Raku firing was a really crazy and fun experience but I'm a little too scared of fire to do it more than once a year lol
Photo dump part 2- Raku! I did mostly horsehair my first time around, ran into a few issues with the terra sig cracking on the surface of my pots but Im pretty pleased with how they turned out anyway. the copper oxide glaze also was a little wonky, but the reduction on the bottom of that bowl gave it such nice colors :3
Handbuilt earthenware, raku fired and decorated with hand painted glaze accents.
This mask is a part of a (loosely connected) mask series, all hand-built and fired using a range of different temperatures and techniques.
I think it might have turned out the best of the whole series; exactly what I imagine The Puppet's mask would look like in real life. I'm very very happy with the result!
[in the voice of a cartoon character hollerin] Raku!! My phone's case still smells like wood smoke.
Still exhausted from yesterday and haven't taken pics of all my pieces yet, but it was a great firing (we did two batches and only a couple pieces broke! and we got such colorful reduction results in the glazes!) and I'm proud of how my pieces came out. Here's a few in situ:
(The turtle came out beautifully in white crackle, but I'm especially fond of the carp-dragon because it survived such long odds. It was almost not dry enough to be bisqued and ready with this batch, and then I was told that in all likelihood the limbs would break off. But here it is, next to the burning trash can it rose from, completely whole!)
Raku night went well!! This elegant bottle has a swash of turkey tail-like fungal ruffles, none of which broke off (whew!). You simply must swipe through and see how different it looks in direct vs indirect sunlight!
Amazingly, all this variation in color came from a single glaze. I was hoping the ruffles would insulate each other and stay coppery instead of turning fully blue, and they largely did.
watched an episode of the pottery throwdown where they were all like "this is weird?? what's up with this clay???" and not gonna lie i was sitting there like but how weird can clay get UNTIL i went to pottery and someone gave me some raku clay and literally it was like sand stuck together by PVA glue it was SO weird

This mask was made with @little-sw33tie in mind - hi towoni :3 !!
Gaster mask!! Younger Naku going bonkers over having made this in my head!!
Firing this was a disaster. The glaze didn't get hot enough, so it didn't get glossy. Initially, I added details with horse hair, but I decided to put it back in the kiln so they got burnt off. There was water in it though, so it cracked a bunch, which would be terrible IF it wasn't Gaster!! It turned out so cool!! I'm so happy!!!
I put some in progress pics under the cut! Even a gif of the horse hair being applied - note how matte it is right out of the first firing
Raku fired Siamese cat, this was a gift for one of my best friends. It didn't come out quite like I thought it would, but I still liked it. I will probably try again in the fall when pottery starts back up. I understand how the glazing works a little better now. I'm quite pleased with the eyes, they came out very vividly, and I like the copper glaze on the base, though next time I'll be a bit more consistent with the layers.
Most importantly, my friend really likes it. Before I sent it to her I did a sort of faux-kintsugi repair to the part that cracked during the firing. I used E-6000 clear glue and gold colored aluminum foil. I also attached a round cork coaster to the base to give it a little more structure and keep it nice and level for her desk. I forgot to take photos of the completed statue though. heh
