Fantasy Month :Alice in Wonderland
Tumblr media
FOr the first film in fantasy month I shall look at Irwin Allens TV miniseries adaptation of Lewis Carrolls classic Alice stories
In this 1985 film Alice (Natalie Gregory) becomes lost in the realm of wonderland ,meeting odd characters she is eager to return home and prove herself not just a child ....And must also face her fears in the form of the Jabberwocky (Tom McLoughlin )
So this is one of many many many many adaptations of Alice in Wonderland.I have been aware of this version for a long time :Saw the VHS at blockbuster back when I was akid ,considered purchasing the DVD once and of course I know its a favorite for many Wonderland fans .Now with films like this ,that I didnt see as a kid ,I sometimes I deel a bit melancholly that it has taken me long to see it....I dont feel that this time. Now I did very much enjoy this ,this was a very fun time for me.....But I dont think it would of resonated with kid me,and being more mature ,familiar with the Alice story ,familiar with the entertainers within this and able to apppreciate certain moments ,I like it and feel no regret .That is to say,I also have problems, but I mostly really liked this
So what is this ?Where does this fall in the pantheon of Alice films .Well 4 things make it stand out
1.It adapts both Alices Adventures in Wonderland and Alice Through The Looking Glass ,first half is WOnderland ,second half Looking Glass . Most versions either just do Wonderland or mix in both stories together .As an adaptation I can only speak for the first half ,for I have only read Wonderland ....And its not adapted great ,some things they go too true to text despite their being obvious changes and certain scenes due to these changes become pointless(THe Caterpiller scenes purpose had been deleted so I dont know why it wasnt cut ).However the story does capture the madness I associate with Alice
2.The film adds a thread. Now the Alice stories are nonsense tales .just random encounters with weird characters ,not really a plot to speak of .THis movie add one about Alice growing up and her desire to go home ,first half really tackeling the growing up thing and the second is her facing her fears .I do like the idea of this arc for Alice ,even if I dont feelWonderland is the best story for this . The film also adds a villain in the form of the Jabberwocky from Lewis Carrols poem, who is the personification of Alices fears.I actually like this change ,I'm a big fan of the monster from the mind idea ,in fact the use of the Jabberwocky here reminds me of the Rhino from James and the Giant Peach (A childhood favorite of mine ) and I think the Jabberwocky is legit scary for kids ,the scene where he is introduced was legit spooky. What holds him back is he just represents fear and nothing concrete
3.THE ALL STAR CAST .Yeah its not the only version to get big actors but holy cow so many big stars are in this ,I cant comment on every single one .I'll start with the negative, cause while most of the cast is good some feel like they are collecting a paycheck : I dont know why Shelley Winters and Donald O'Connor and Shelley Winters are even there as the Lowrey Bird and Dodo ,they feel wasted. I was mixed on Sid Cesaras the Gryphon while always good honestly just feels like Sid Cesar in a Gryphon outfit .My least favorite was Sammy Davis Jr as the Caterpillar, dont get me wrong ,Davis Jr was a great performer ,but he is reallly stiff and miscast here .There are also cast members who I think are good ,but not my favorite versions of these characters like Red Buttons as the White Rabbit and Anthony Newley as Mad Hatter .Then you have some that I think are great even perfect like :
Telly Savalas who is wonderfully mysterious as the Cheshire Cat
Roddy McDowall as the March Hare, who steals the Mad Tea party scene
Jayne Meadows anbd Robert Morely are pitch perfect as the Queen and King of hearts
Ringo Starr is a ton of fun as the Mock Turtle
FRom what I understand Carol Channings performance as the White Queen has people kind of split but I adored her ,she is so fun to watch
Harvey Korman as the White King is fun cause.....Look I just like Harvey Korman
Merv Griffin,PAtrick Duffy,Steve Allen (Who also wrote the songs ) and Pat Morita are BRILLAINT as the conductor and passengers on the train, which maybe my favorite non musical scene
Karl Malden REALLY impressed me as the Walrus ,especially his singing ability
Eydie Gorme and Steve Lawrence were a unique take on Tweedledee and Tweedledum
And Lloyd Bridges is so darn lovable as theWhite Knight, and was happy he got to play a role in the finale ,fighting the Jabberwocky
I didnt even mention Sherman Hemsley ,Johnathan Winters,Beau Bridges and Ernest Borgnine!!!!
4.The songs ! This is a musical with songs by Steve Allen .....And for the most part the songs work.Yes some are filler and not alll of them work, but there were more that did work then didnt .I think the songs in the first half are more memorable. The two songs that stood out to me are the Walrus and the Carpenters song (Who knew Karl Malden had a musical flare to him)and really my favorite scene is Cheshire Cats song Theres No Way Home ,which mysterious and kind of sad but beautifully sung by Telly Savalas. Its the scene that stuck with me
Outside these main elements there are a few other things I wanna discuss. The prooduction design and costumes are very theatrical, this feels like a play, they are intenionally not realistic .The costumes remind me a lot of Fairy Tale Theater ,though the makeup is more stage makeup ,less cinematic here.I think I like the costumes,I've seen better but .....I've seen the 1933 version which this is much better then.I will say despite this being very light version.....There is a somewhat unsettling quality to it which I feel has to be part of Wonderland.WE have the obvious scary part ,the Jabberwocky, who is a big dragon monster ,but theres just the way characters react to Alice :The Cheshire Cat is very sinister ,the Mad Tea Party feel truly mad ,and some character are just very rude and mean .Theres also just odd creepy moments......CAroll Chyanning turns into a sheep out of nowhere and the Pig baby scene just has me very uncomfortable
This film does have a great grounding element:Natalie Gregory as possibly the best Alice I have seen. Alice here is very relatable ,when your a kid you wanna be taken seriously ,so I really connet to her. When she is scared your scared ,when she is happy you are ,and she almost outshines her older co stars .She is the ancor that makes the film work
Sooooo this review went on for a while.I just had a lot to say about the film.I think it is flawed but it is very enjoyable

The panel is really made to be a fabric book, but it also works great for a cute baby quilt. It was a great challenge for me! I cut the blocks 7 1/2″ square out of the panel, and added the 3″ pinwheels and 3″ x 7 1/2″ sashing strips to make it a nice crib size. It has minky on the back and a warm batting, so I quilted it with simple.

Werewolf Floaties - John 5/John Lowery x Reader [Fluff]
Synopsis: After years of dancing around each other, both of you idiots wonder if the other is pining just as hard.Solution? Pool party. (Good thinking Ginger.)
Notes: No smut in this cause as I was writing, it became apparent that I can't think of John that way. Don’t know what it is, I feel like he's bff material. Oops. Accidentally friend zoned. Oh well, he's got Rita irl and they're endgame❤️
Tumblr media
John strums an E minor on his guitar, staring up at his living room ceiling.
"I mean... does she think of me as a brother?"
Ginger shakes his head adamantly, shoving four doritos into his mouth. "No. Definitely not. No way, man."
"The more you say it, the more it sounds like bullshit," Piggy hisses. Ginger looks over to the bassist, genuinely bewildered.
"I've seen (y/n) look at John before... I don't think that's brotherly love. Or, y'know, maybe sorta like Game of Thrones, but-- she could have just been looking over his shoulder at something..."
"You're really cheering me up, here. Thanks guys." John sighs.
"Not a problemo," Ginger sets aside his empty chip bag. Piggy cuddles one of John's cats. Rob comes sauntering out of the kitchen, shaking a green, slimy looking power shake.
"Who needs some fucking cheering up, man?!" he asks, bouncing himself onto the couch beside John.
"John thinks (y/n) doesn't want his dick," Piggy supplies. Rob gives John his Disappointed Father™ look.
"That's not the only reason," John clarifies, starting to play a melancholy riff on his guitar as he speaks. "I don't think she's interested in me, outside of being a friend."
"Mm." Rob hopes that sounded sympathetic.
"--It's cause I'm so damn nice. If I told her I thought she was beautiful she'd just go, "Awww! Jooohn!" and move on."
“Wow, you sounded just like her,” Ginger murmured.
"Just let your inner asshole out, ladies love that," Piggy suggests, "She asks for a drink or something? Tell her get it herself! Be the rock star that you are, man!"
"Ooh, refusing to get a woman a drink," Rob says, "Look out, we've got a real badass over here."
"Anyway Matt, if you did that, you'd probably cry all night and apologize," John says, rolling his eyes at the bassist. Piggy looks down.
"Most likely."
"Ask her out to a movie. Ask her out to Three From Hell, that's a great date night movie," Rob nods.
"That's not even out yet," John sighs.
"There're two prequels. Just throwing that out there."
"Pool party," Ginger suddenly blurts.
"Not now," John mutters.
"No, I think you should have a pool party, John. One, (y/n) would be in a... in a swimsuit that'll probably look very very, uh, pleasing, and two-- you could find out definitively if she likes you or not."
Piggy starts to nod, pointing. "You may be onto something, Kenny."
"I love pool parties," Rob pitches in, "Not. Hot fuckin weather. Stupid looking swim trunks. Stupid little cocktails in stupid little pineapples."
"A limitless poolside bar," Piggy grins.
"Unicorn floaties!" Everyone looks over at Ginger. "Or... werewolf floaties?"
"Oh, yeah."
"Yep."
"Totally."
John begins to play the tune to 'Everybody Hurts' on his guitar, so Rob concedes. "Sheri and I'll come. If only to show a little solidarity. I remember being back in the dating game." He shakes his head. "Fucking glad I'm married, man."
"I'm gonna pick up, like, four babes who are big into vampires," Piggy says, "Keep a room open for me John, I'm gonna need it."
"I'm not just inviting random girls," John protests.
"Can I bring my rottweilers?" Ginger smiles.
"No, your psycho rottweilers tried to eat one of my cats last time," John says.
"They'll be tethered!"
"...Fine."
---
The late summer heat beats down as your phone rings. You smile to yourself as you read the caller ID.
"John?"
"(y/n)! Hey! I'm having this... thing, like a... like a pool type thing... not the game pool, the... water."
"Oh," you say, "You're having a pool party?"
"Yeah! That's... yeah."
You're smiling like an idiot, thinking of the handsome blonde. "I'd love to come."
"Cool! Yeah, um... it's tomorrow. Everyone's gonna be there."
"Sounds good."
"Alright."
"Alright!"
You bite your lip, waiting to see if he'd say anything else.
"See ya tomorrow! I'll be on the lookout for... boys!"
You drop the phone as it goes dead, sighing to yourself. You're excited, but you wish John saw you as more than a little sister.
"What the fuck does that mean?" Rob immediately asks him. John looks around at all his band mates huddled around the phone.
"I'll be on the lookout for boys?" Piggy frowns, "Great, man. Now she thinks you're gay."
"John and I experimented during our days on tour with Manson," Ginger smiles proudly.
"To be fair, his touring environment would allow for it," Rob mumbles.
"That's not helpful Ginger, everybody does that," Piggy whispers.
"I don't!" Rob scoffs. John cuts into their little argument.
"HEY. I just meant I would be looking out for boys, like, protective wise! I'd be making sure none of them would... bother her?"
"Maybe that's why she thinks of you as a big brother," Ginger grimaces. John glares at everyone.
"What should I have said, "Hi, (y/n). Can't wait to see your tits bounce in your bikini tomorrow?""
"That would've worked," Rob nods.
"Wouldn't have been a lie, either," Piggy elbows him.
"Maybe say boobs instead of tits though," Ginger comments.
"Leave the flirting to me, and just help me get my pool ready," John says, turning. Ginger is already in the kitchen. He plops two pineapples on the cutting board and picks up a butcher knife, grinning.
"Everyone back away from the crazy drummer with the knife," Rob says.
You tie the bikini top behind you, and check yourself in the mirror. You look great, and you know John loves boobs. If he didn't notice you (and your boobs) today, he never would.
"Hey," you smile at the mirror. "Hey, John!" you try again. "Hey, baby," you say sultrily, then groan in frustration. Faced with him opening the door for you, all you'll be able to do is abrasively grunt anyway.
Exiting your beachside apartment, you hop into your convertible, toss on some Sabbath from your Bluetooth, and start off toward the Lowrey mansion.
John looks at himself in the mirror. "She likes you," he pep talks himself. "If she didn't like you, she wouldn't talk to you. Simple as that. She wouldn't even be coming to this party if she hated you!" He frowns. "Why would she hate you?" That was a bad question to ask himself. As a billion possible answers to that flooded his brain, he heard a very loud, very vicious barking from downstairs, and the hybrid of a scream and a hiss from one of his cats.
"Ginger's dogs must be here," John smiles tightly.
Downstairs, Piggy is gelling and combing his hair for the tenth time, and watching the mirror.
"Ging! Fangs, or no fangs?" he asks, trying on the prosthetics. One of John's cats jumps onto Piggy's shoulder.
"What?" Ginger asks, trying to corral his rottweilers as they gnaw on John's couch.
"You're right," Piggy grins, "Always fangs."
Outside, Rob and Sheri are chilling under an umbrella by the large pool. The hedges are all perfectly trimmed, and the backyard fountains look great. Music is already playing, and everyone is set to have a good time.
"Come in with me, sweetie," Sheri pouts, stripping down to her purple bikini, "I'm sure the water's just fine."
"Go for it."
"Come on!"
"I don't do swimming," Rob mutters, hiding behind his beanie and sunglasses. Sheri frowns.
"Stop being such a grump and come in." Rob cautiously takes off his Svengoolie shirt, crossing his arms.
"My dreads take forever to dry."
"That's okay."
"I'm too hot."
"Your wet dreads will cool you off."
"I'll get sunburned."
"I'll protect you," Sheri giggles, jumping on his back. Rob can't help but laugh too as she kicks him forward to jump in.
You get out of your car at John's. You see a bunch of cars already there, and take a deep breath. You'd been here a hundred times before, but it was different this time. This time you'd do something about your crush.
Now or never.
"A daiquiri, my lady?" Ginger asks you, surprising you with a banana cocktail right in front of your face.
"Don't call her 'my lady' Kenny, Jesus Christ," Piggy hisses, "It's creepy!"
"Well geez, I was just being nice..."
"Hey! You're creepy, you fanged asshole," you shoot back, and Piggy grins, jogging over and fist bumping you. You give Ginger a big tight hug, and accept the drink graciously. Daiquiris might not be your drink of choice, but you'll take anything right now to ease your nerves.
"So John's upstairs getting ready," Ginger tells you, slapping his thighs excitably, "Uhhh, probably talking to himself in the mirror and stuff, telling himself you--"
Piggy hits him. "Eh, you know how John is with his hair and stuff." You raise an eyebrow at Piggy's own overly-styled hair, but smile.
"Sure. I gotta get to the pool, man, I'm hot as fuck."
"That you are," Piggy grins, and you give him the finger.
"(y/n)!" Sheri shrieks, and gets out of the pool to run over.
"No, don't leave me!" Rob calls. You strip down to your bathing suit, tossing your clothes, and hug Sheri.
"I feel like it's been forever!" you say.
"I know! I've been so busy with Rob and Three From Hell, I haven't had any time to see my friends. I'm so glad you made it. I know John's excited to have you here."
"That's an understatement," Rob muttered, floating just above the surface like a lake monster. Sheri turns to him, her look saying 'I will drown you'. Rob takes the hint, and shuts up.
"Hey stranger," you get into the pool, and swim over to Rob.
"Hey you," Rob smirks, "How you been?"
"Keeping busy." You grab a Mummy floatie, "How was the tour?"
"Oh, it rocked. Yeah, no rifts with Manson this time, which was nice."
As you three chat in the pool, John comes downstairs in his Frankenstein swim trunks. He takes his T-shirt off, and Piggy pretends to faint into Ginger's arms. Ginger, bless his heart, actually thinks he's fainted.
"You okay?"
"Yeah, yes, just..."
"Oh god. She's in the pool," John says, and Ginger frowns.
"Yeah. Is that an issue, man?" Piggy stifles laughter. John ducks his head in laughter.
"No, Kenny. I'm just... flustered. A little."
"Hey. Hey, it's gonna be okay," Ginger slaps a hand on his shoulder. "Man, I spent your player years on tour as your wingman. I know you've got the moves."
"Care to describe these moves, Kenny?" Piggy asks.
"Oh, well he's got this thing that he does where he looks at you with those eyes and just--"
"I love you but I'm leaving. Bye," John smirks, pushes through them, and walks toward the pool. He clears his throat, and tries to come off casual.
"Hey, (y/n)."
You look up, regarding John. He looks amazing-- shoulder length blonde hair swept by the wind, beard trimmed, sexy eyes squinting in the sun. All the gorgeous tattoos on his chest are such a turn on, too. He's been your friend for ages, and though you've always harbored a crush, you never remember him being this hot. You try to remember words.
"John! Hey, come on in."
"Yeah! Totally. Good idea." John gets in, and Sheri shoots Rob a look. Rob shrugs.
"I'm in now, I'm not getting out."
Sheri intensifies her look. Rob glances down at a non existent watch.
"Ohh, look at the time, I think it's--"
"Vegan lemon drops o'clock!" Sheri giggles, and Rob closes his mouth.
"Uh, sure. That, mmm. Woah!" She yanks him out of the pool, and the two head over to the bar in search of more cocktails. This leaves you and John alone.
"God damn, this freezing pool is making my balls shrivel up," John mentions, and you laugh.
"Fortunately, I don't have that problem."
"Nah, you've just got..." John glances down at where your nipples are starting to peak, and you see him bite his lip ever so slightly before looking away. Bingo.
"You like my bathing suit? It's new," you tell him.
"Very becoming of you," he nods. "Really, I love it."
"You don't look so bad yourself."
"Yeah?" He swims a little closer to you. "I'm actually hating this water. Wanna check out the hot tub? I've got it at a real nice setting."
"Let's do it," you say, and take his hand, swimming to the shallow end with him. John takes a deep breath as you get out of the pool in front of him, watching as the water drips from the swimsuit clinging to your body. You turn, and walk with him to the hot tub surrounded by fountains.
"Look at them," Piggy says, "They're finally cozying up!"
"Leave them alone," Rob mutters, "They need to put up a curtain or something."
"Hey, we like (y/n), we want John to get with her so she can come on tour with us," Ginger points out.
"So. This is so strange for me to be in here without a guitar," John laughs, putting his arm around you. Your eyes widen a little, and you freeze. Is he doing that to be friendly?
"You play guitar in the hot tub?"
"Oh, yeah. It's a good way to get electrocuted, but it's also a good spot to practice. And hey, if you're not risking electrocution while playing, are you really metal?"
You grin. "When aren't you playing guitar?"
"When I'm talking to you," John admits, turning fully toward you. "You require my full attention. (y/n), there's something I gotta tell you."
"Yeah?" You bite your lip.
Just then, the patio door opens.
"I am fashionably late but HERE!"
Everyone turns to find Manson standing there. All at once, John regrets inviting him.
"Awww, look at you two!" Marilyn calls over to the hot tub, "Kissy kissy kissy sex time! Hey (y/n)!" You wave to him.
"Manson? Get over here," Rob practically drags the new guest over to the bar, knowing that is where he can keep him best distracted.
John turns back to you.
"Well. That was--"
"Before you tell me what you were going to tell me. Do you think of me as a sister?"
You blurt out the question, dying to definitively know the answer so you could stop second guessing yourself.
"A sister?" John laughs a little. "I think of you as my best friend!"
Your face falls, and you feel like such an idiot for falling into this whole thing head over heels. Of course he doesn't like you like that. You're just reading too far into it, as usual.
"--a best friend who I wish was more than a best friend." You hesitate, and look up at him as he second guesses himself. "D...Do you think of me as a brother?"
"N-No!"
He sighs. "(y/n), I've felt this way for years, but it never seemed like the right time to tell you. I think you're really cute. And, sexy. Really sexy. Like... I can't stop thinking about you."
"I..." you shake your head, "John, I..."
He swallows. "Okay, now you're making me nervous. Thumbs up, or down?" He gives a shaky laugh.
You straddle him underwater, sitting on his lap and cupping his cheeks.
"John Lowery. I've wanted to be your monster girl since the day you asked me what my favourite Karloff movie was." He smiles. "Be the Lily to my Hermann?"
"If you'll be the Gomez to my Morticia."
You press your lips to his again, and as he wraps one arm around you, he uses the other to pull a success fist.
Hollering erupts from the bar, and you two turn to see everyone clapping, pumping their fists, and celebrating.
"Wooooh, John and (y/n) are finally gonna fuck, cocaine for everyone!" Marilyn calls.
"Manson, no."
"But Robert!"
"No."
You and John giggle, turning to each other again in your own little world. John plays with your hair, looking down to admire how you look in your swimsuit.
"I think you're perfect. Like... Paul Stanley's guitar perfect."
You draw back, putting a playfully shocked hand on your chest. "To receive a compliment like that... overwhelming!"
He swims over to catch you again, and kisses your cheek, chasing you as you dip underwater.
"Ah! Help, lifeguard!" you shout, laughing, and oh no-- here comes Ginger to save the day.

How Do You Memorialize Your Dog?

We asked Dogster readers to share stories about how they have honored a dog’s passing:
I have a nose print necklace of his, a tattoo of his paw on my hip where he liked to dig his feet in for neck scratches, and his cremated remains are on a memorial shelf with his collars, bandanas, favorite toys and a photo. Along with a memorial mug with his and my other late dogs’ pictures drawn on, as well as my favorite poem (e.e. cummings’ “I carry your heart with me.” “He’s also the reason I became a dog trainer, so every dog I help in my practice is an ode to him.” — Ettel Edshteyn, New York
Mac was special friends with Rocky the horse. They died within months of each other, and Mac’s urn sits atop Rocky’s.
Mac passed away at 2 years old, due to being born with a diaphragmatic hernia. Mac traveled everywhere with me and would often be found gently picking up baby mice and bringing them back into the barn. He would then lie down with his “babies,” and I would often find them curled up in his belly hair. Mac also loved frogs of all kinds. He loved everyone he met and was loved by everyone. He was “mine” and glued to my hip — everywhere I went.
When he passed, we had him cremated. My boy loved my gelding, who passed away a few short months before him (pictured right) and we had him cremated as well. Mac’s urn sits atop Rocky’s with photos along with his collars (he was a fashionable dude). We talk about him daily, and never talk of him with sorrow. Instead, we always rejoice and laugh about all our times we had with our sweet Mac. When we see a mouse in the barn or a random frog, we smile and think of our boy. — Kaley Pannone, Pennsylvania
My dog Harley passed shortly before I moved from upstate New York back home to California. I had his ashes and knew I wanted to have a custom box made for them. Before I sold my New York home, I took down two pieces of the cedar fence to the yard that he loved so much and put them in the moving truck. When I got to California, I commissioned an artist and woodworker to use them to make a custom box. The artist used a laser to etch Good Boy into the wood and also used the titanium plates and screws from Harley’s knee surgery as part of the design. It is very special. — Colten Tognazzini, California
I attended a Memorial Art Therapy class at DoveLewis and made some fused glass art with a bit of Zoë’s ashes inside. The art hangs on a small tree-shaped display in my living room, along with her dog tag and a favorite photo. — Melanie Altaras, Oregon
Tennessee passed in October 2015. We got an urn and used a tiny amount of her ashes for Artful Ashes memorial heart. I also have her collar and a tag around the urn. The urn reads: Tennessee April 1, 2003 — October 26, 2015 Beloved Friend and Companion Dog of my Heart. And the back says: If love could have saved you, you would have lived forever.” — Candice Gray, Georgia

My mom got me Pal, a rescued Cairn and Yorkshire Terrier mix, from the shelter when I turned 17. My mom had hopes that he would help me with my anxiety and depression. He did. I can say this dog saved my life several times as I found my way in the world as a queer trans guy. When he passed at the age of 14, we had him cremated, and he currently sits on our mantle.
Each year, in October when we set up an altar to honor our ancestors, we include him. His image, his ashes, his favorite toys and special treats sit among the items that were so special to our human loved ones. We spend three days telling stories about those we have lost, including our furry family members. We also tell these stories year-round to our living pups. There is rarely a day that goes by that we don’t say something like “Your older brother loved that particular toy, too” to our living pups. He remains in our hearts, our physical space and in our language.” — Cameron Whitley, Washington

The Merry Month of Mirth- Hair
(Previous: Eyes , Next: Melodramatic)
Adrian made it a point to look as bored as possible as he sat alone at his own desk back in his Los Angeles office, towering high above the city.
Solaina had not gotten off him once about the whole Jester affair, and ruined his vacation time in New York. And now she kept harping on him with continuous texts and calls about whether or not he’d found any results in his sector? It was unbearable. So much he even had to actually shut off his cell phone. That didn’t matter though. She still kept emailing him, sending him reminders whenever she could, which was all the time.
Finally he’d sat down to actually sift through a few databases he could think of. And just as he thought, he wasn’t finding any sort of trace whatsoever. He thought he’d caught whiffs a few times, but they proved to be dead ends that seemed more coincidental than actual evidence.
Unless that was what they wanted him to think…
He paused, shaking his head and breaking himself out of his stupor.
Was he going crazy?? It was like digging through a haystack to look for a single sewing needle. And occasionally, he’d run into other sewing needles made of plastic when the one he needed had to be made from stainless steel.
Sure, every time he thought he’d found something he’d get a little excited… and maybe it was because it would get Solaina off his back, or maybe it was the thrill of finding dirt on someone-
No- no.
He inhaled through his nose and sighed heavily. This was very boring. This wasn’t at all exciting.
“Look at this,” He caught sight of his reflection on his laptop screen, “What a mess and I’ve only just sat here all day long,”
He paused in his search and opened up the webcam application, turning his attention to a small comb he pulled out of his pocket instead. His hair was a mess and that just wouldn’t do.
Before he could even start he spotted some sort of flicker in the window behind him. The office only really had one wall and that was the one facing the interior. The rest of the place was nothing but reinforced glass and steel windows to look out from.
Maybe it was a plane or a helicopter. The sun had just barely started to go down anyway.
That theory immediately proved itself to be wrong when the glass began to ripple and a pair of hands shot out, grabbing him by the back of the neck in a choke hold. A body followed soon after, stepping out of the rippling glass. Unfortunately for him, reflexes had shoved the laptop aside, so he couldn’t even see who was attacking him to begin with.
Stupid Solaina. Never leaving anything alone! Now he was going to die up here in his own office to some random assailant!
He’d never forgive her.
There was a sudden crash as the main doors to the office were kicked in however, and the sound of a gun going off.
The hands let go and the figure retreated back into the now bullet-shattered-but-not-broken-glass, disappearing entirely.
Adrian collapsed and fell under his desk, gasping dramatically before scrambling to pull himself back up in a panic.
“Good thing I get a hankerin’ ta just suddenly take trips ta LA, huh? Even though this place don’t really hold a candle up ta home I’d say.” Lowrey shrugged as he shook his head, putting his pistol away briefly to help Adrian back onto his feet. Though not entirely out of friendliness. “The hell you been up to? Makin’ more stupid deals?” “No!!” Adrian exclaimed as he looked back at the window fearfully, backing away from it slowly after that. He did briefly return to his desk to grab his computer however. “Why would I be doing such a thing?” “Cuz it ain’t like you ta learn the first time. And we all know about your lil uh, ahem. ‘Problem’” Lowrey answered, mostly nonchalant about the whole thing. He did flit his tongue out a few times however, before grinning at him.
Adrian fumed, like an angry bull. But he was far too shaken up to really say anything venomous back. “I didn’t see who it was- they just- came out of the mirror-” “Fae. Obviously. You musta pissed them off again or run inta something cuz they just don’t come outta nowhere like that. In fact, we should probably get going.” “I did no such thing, I was only checking my own sectors. And why?” Not that Adrian was disagreeing with that notion.
“Cuz I left Liam by himself at the airport and he’s probably gettin’ all jittery just waitin’ fer us. C’mon boss.” At that, the vampire began to usher the man out of the room.
Adrian kept looking back towards his desk though, “Solaina put you up to this didn’t she?” Lowrey only chuckled. “Nah, but she sure tried to.” “So you ARE aware of what she’s been going on about lately.” “Gotta keep movin’ boss, can’t keep th’ jets waitin’ forever. That’s just plain bad manners.”

Ten things I remember from kindergarten when I was a five-year-old at Lowrey.
January 15, 2017
There’s a new movie out that I saw the other day called “Lion,” based on the book A Long Way Home by Saroo Brierly (with Larry Buttrose). It’s the real-life story about a young Saroo, who as a poor, five-year-old boy from a small village in India, goes out one day with his older brother to scavenge coal, gets separated from him, hops a train, falls asleep…and wakes up 900 miles later in Calcutta where the people speak a different language.
Knowing his mother only as “Mum,” and the first initial of the name of the town where he came from, Saroo spends several harrowing weeks alone in the streets before an adult rescues him and takes him to an orphanage.  Eventually he gets adopted by a loving, affluent Australian couple and lives a happy life with them for 20 years in Tasmania…until he becomes obsessed with the idea of researching his identity and finding his birth mother.
Relying on foggy memories of his village, as well as Google Earth to search for images of it, he painstakingly conducts his investigation and is finally reunited with his mother. A review in the New York Daily News calls “Lion” a “10-hanky film.”
After seeing Saroo Brierley interviewed on 60 Minutes, I was intrigued by the random things he could visualize as a five-year-old to find his village and family two decades later. I was five when I started kindergarten in the fall of 1952 at Lowrey School in Dearborn, and Brierly’s story caused me to recall some of the things that I can remember from that time in my life. Here are ten of them:
I’m not sure how my mother connected with the Massaro family who lived two-and-half blocks away from our house, but Mrs. Massaro and my Mom took turns walking Freddy Massaro and me to kindergarten each morning, until our moms were comfortable with the two of us making the 1.3-mile trip together on our own. I remember that there were both morning and afternoon sessions at Lowrey. I also remember being disappointed that my friend Butchie, whose house I passed on the way to school every day, attended the afternoon session, not the morning one with me.
There were two kindergarten classrooms for each session. Miss Grumman taught my class; Miss Vincent taught the other. The rooms were separated by a “cloakroom” or “clothes press.” One classroom had a piano where Miss Grumman played the “alphabet song” to teach us our ABCs. When I first heard it I recall asking Freddy, “What’s an ‘alamenno pea’?”
There was a specially equipped classroom down the hall where the “crippled kids,” as we called them in those days, went to learn. Every day I saw children who couldn’t control their body movements and kids whose legs were in braces. I remember feeling really sorry for them.
At the south end of my room, the biggest of the two kindergarten rooms, there was a playhouse. At Christmas time, a tree was decorated near it for which we made cords of garland by linking colorful pieces of construction paper. I remember standing on risers in front of the tree where we sang “Up on the Housetop.” We hit rhythm sticks every time we came to the part that goes, “…click, cIick, click.” I recall being surprised that most of the other kids seemed to know the words to the song, while I didn’t. I thought I knew all the Christmas songs: “Jingle Bells,” “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” “Frosty the Snowman,” “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” and “Silent Night.” I never did learn the words. I still don’t know them today.
At mid-year, after semester break, Freddy and I began to attend the afternoon kindergarten session. That’s when a new kid by the name of Noel was introduced to our class. After a few days it was discovered that he could read and write. So he was quickly transferred to first grade down the hall. The following year Noel entered the first grade at St. Alphonsus. He remains a good friend of mine today and is a successful attorney.
Every time it was someone’s birthday, he or she would be seated at a special table at the front of the class. A parent would usually deliver treats, such as cupcakes, and everyone would sing “Happy Birthday.” I remember feeling so proud because my Dad picked up candy bars–big boxes of full-sized Mounds Bars and Almond Joys–at my Uncle Frank’s “filling station.” Also, you were to select someone of the opposite sex to sit with at the head table. I picked a girl by the name of Donna, who, in my opinion, was the prettiest girl in the class. But I was really, really shy. I don’t recall ever talking to her again.
Random names I recall: Besides Freddy and Noel, I have the strongest image of a kid named Leeroy. Hearing his name made me think of a cowboy. Hearing his raspy voice made me think of sandpaper. Leeroy had buck teeth with wide gaps. He often wore white shirts. He was always sucking up to Miss Grumman. I suspect he turned out to be a “sid” who probably carried his books in a school bag when he started first grade. I also remember the names of Nancy, Joyce and Jackie. I don’t remember any last names. Random things I recall: tricycles we could ride on the wooden floor; old-fashioned stereoscopes (forerunners to View-Masters) with 3-D images of faraway places; closets with dark wooden doors where we stored our rugs for “rest period;” Miss Grumman’s desk at the entrance to our room; and, finally, Big Chief tablets for writing and drawing.
My mother didn’t drive. So occasionally she would arrange for Mrs. Phillips, our next-door neighbor, to pick me up from school. I remember that the Phillips owned a 1949 or ‘50 or ‘51 Ford. I think it was a “two-door sedan.” Navy blue. With black walls. It was a “three-speed,” with the shifter on the column. I remember that the clutch made a deep, bellowing “clump” every time Mrs. Phillips changed gears. The Phillips owned one car. I wonder how Mr. Phillips got to work on days that Mrs. Phillips picked me up.
I was sitting at a table in the back of the room the first time I figured out how to write “Lenny” on a piece of paper with a crayon. I remember getting excited and getting up out of my chair to show Miss Grumman. She smiled, but I remember feeling disappointed that she didn’t get all excited like me.
There was a recess every day so we could go outside to play. I remember how the kids would rush out of the room to the south door of the school which opened up to the playground. It bugged me the way they would all push and shove. I never did that. It didn’t seem right. Then, when the door opened, the kids would race to be the first one to the swings. I remember thinking that if I chose to rush the door and run to the swings there was no way that anyone could beat me. I tried it once. And I was right.
A few years ago a good friend gave me the 1980s book of essays called All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten by Robert Fulghum. Striking me at the time as preachy, sugarcoated, I never finished it. And yet, I’ve long thought that there’s validity to its central thesis: that the world would be a better place if adults were nice to each other, shared things, cleaned up after their own messes, etc. Just as we were taught at Lowrey.

Can Cat’s Have Alzheimer’s?
The post Can Cat’s Have Alzheimer’s? by Sassafras Lowrey appeared first on Catster. Copying over entire articles infringes on copyright laws. You may not be aware of it, but all of these articles were assigned, contracted and paid for, so they aren't considered public domain. However, we appreciate that you like the article and would love it if you continued sharing just the first paragraph of an article, then linking out to the rest of the piece on Catster.com.
Feline Senile Dementia also sometimes known as Cognitive Dysfunction System (CDS) is an age-related disease that impacts the brain. Like dementia in humans, cats who experience dementia will generally display a decrease in memory, awareness and recognition of the world around them including their home, as well as guardians and any other animals in the family.
Here are the feline dementia symptoms to watch for
Symptoms of dementia can begin showing up in cats that most us might not even think of as particularly old. Dr. Tory Waxman, a small-animal veterinarian and co-founder of human-grade dog food brand Sundays explained that in cats as young as 7 and 8 symptoms of dementia can be observed.  She notes that signs of dementia are generally behavioral shifts. Common symptoms include
Random vocalizations
Seeming to be lost in familiar environments
Change in litter box habits
Becoming more or less friendly — or other changes in demeanor
Over or under-grooming
Appetite changes
Dr. Waxman advises “if any of the aforementioned or other behavioral changes are noted, cat parents should notify their veterinarian.” Your vet will be able to help you to determine if there is a different underlying health issue or if your cat has dementia.
How feline dementia is diagnosed
As there is no one test that can determine if your cat has dementia, feline dementia is mainly diagnosed based “on abnormal behavior reported by a pet parent after the exclusion of other causes,” says Dr. Waxman.
In order to determine if your cat has dementia, your vet will need to do a full and thorough examination, including a physical exam, blood pressure, bloodwork and urinalysis to determine if there are any other underlying medical conditions.
If you suspect your cat has dementia, Dr. Waxman advises taking video recordings that you can show or email to your vet. “Many cats are quite nervous at the veterinary office so are unlikely to display any abnormal signs” notes Dr. Waxman. Having a video showing the symptoms you see at home can help your vet to develop a more comprehensive understanding of your cat’s health. Depending on the symptoms your cat is presenting, your vet may also refer you to a consultation with a veterinary neurologist or behaviorist.

What is the treatment for feline dementia?
Treatment for feline dementia can be tricky.
“Unfortunately, very little research has been done regarding feline dementia so most treatment options are extrapolated from human and canine medicine,” says Dr. Waxman.
There are a number of supplements marketed as providing cognitive support, but always consult with your vet before adding any supplements to your cat’s diet.
“Antioxidants (such as Vitamin E) are thought to slow the development of dementia due to oxidative stress being implicated in the development of dementia,” says Dr. Waxman, adding that with your vet’s approval, adding fish oil into your cat’s diet can be helpful, but make sure that you use fish oil that is labeled as cat safe to make sure there are not harmful additives included.
CBD has become increasingly popular for treating a variety of feline conditions including dementia. However, Dr. Waxman notes “unfortunately there is minimal scientific evidence” to support claims that it would support a cat with dementia. She advises that if you are considering using CBD with your cat to talk with your vet, of course, pay attention to any state and local laws, and reminds to only give “cat-specific products made by companies that are actively doing research on their products (such as Ellevet).”
If your cat seems to be anxious after being diagnosed with dementia, Dr. Waxman encourages use of the calming pheromone Feliway, or Zylkene which is a natural supplement from milk protein, both of which have been shown to decrease stress and promote calmness, but again you want to consult with your cat’s veterinarian before use.
Prognosis
Prognosis of cats with dementia differs greatly cat to cat.
“Some cats may show minor behavioral changes that don’t impact their daily lives, whereas other cats may have dramatic changes that progress quickly” Dr. Waxman says.
How to support your cat experiencing symptoms of dementia
Sharing your home with a cat who is experiencing dementia can be heartbreaking. None of us like to see our cats confused or in any kind of emotional distress. To support your cat, the key is keeping Kitty as comfortable as possible.
It’s important for a cat with dementia to not be let outside as the cat “may have difficulty finding their way home, and there are many dangers outside that could be even that much more dangerous to a cat with dementia. (including traffic, other cats, dogs, wild animals, getting caught in fences, etc.),” says Dr. Waxman.  If your cat is unsteady on their feet, stairs and ramps to favorite furniture can support cats with dementia feeling more comfortable, and can prevent falling injuries.
If your cat has dementia, one of the most important things you can do is to keep the home environment as consistent as possible. Dr. Waxman encourages to, whenever possible, avoid rearranging furniture. Keeping routines as consistent as possible will also support your cat with feeling safe and knowing where they are in the home as they continue to age.
Prevention
Just like with people one of the most important things that you can do to prevent feline dementia is to keep your cat mentally stimulated.
“Most cats actually love learning tricks, and it’s a great way to keep them mentally stimulated! You can teach your cat to sit or come using treats as a lure, and then pairing a word eventually once they start to offer the behavior. It might seem like just a fun game to your cat, but it is challenging them mentally,” says Dr. Waxman.

Dog Zoomies: Why They Happen and What to Do

Dog zoomies are what they sound like. It’s hard not to smile when you see a joyful dog running wildly around your house or yard, zipping back and forth for a few moments before collapsing after a case of what most of us call the “zoomies.” Dog zoomies, or Frenetic Random Activity Periods (FRAPS) as they’re technically called, generally only last a few minutes at most.
What happens before the dog zoomies hit?
A glint in your dog’s eyes might be a sign that he is about to start zooming. Photography ©amandafoundation.org | E+/Getty Images.
Before the zoomies hit, dogs often get a glint in their eyes, and they may start to play-bow at you or other dogs. Dogs with the zoomies often run quickly from one side of the yard or room to the other, back and forth, or spin in circles until they fall down. My youngest dog really enjoys trying to catch her tail when she has the zoomies. While zoomies in dogs and the frantic movements your dog exhibits when they hit might seem concerning, they are actually a normal part of happy dog behavior, and as long as your dog is zooming in a safe space, these FRAPS are nothing to be concerned about.
Why do zoomies in dogs happen?
Dog zoomies tend to hit puppies and young dogs more frequently than older dogs, but zoomies are a great way for dogs of any age to release pent-up energy. Dogs get the zoomies for a variety of reasons — when they are highly excited or aroused or after watching another dog engage in high-energy play. Sometimes, dogs get the zoomies when they are confused or slightly stressed at a dog-training class, such as when the skills being worked on are challenging and they need to blow off some of that nervous energy.
For many dogs of all ages, bath time brings out the zoomies! Even my 15-year-old dog starts zooming around like a puppy after bath time is over. While dog zoomies are very natural for dogs, if they happen very frequently, it might be a good idea to think about how much exercise your pup gets, and if there are ways to add more structured exercise outlets into his day.
Controlling dog zoomies
Zoomies are a natural part of behavior for dogs, and not something you should worry about preventing or discouraging, so long as your dog is zooming in a safe place. This means inside your home or fenced yard, ideally on carpet, and away from breakable items, or small children or elderly family members who could be accidentally knocked over by a large, zooming dog. Try to avoid letting your dog zoom on hardwood floors, or other slick surfaces. While it might seem funny to see a frapping dog slipping and skidding on floors, it can be very dangerous as your dog could slip and injure himself.
So, instead of trying to control the zoomies in dogs, control the environment in which he zooms. For example, if you know your dog gets the FRAPS after a bath, be sure to take him directly from the bath (either being carried or by leash) to a room or yard where he can safely zoom.
Never chase a dog with the zoomies
Sometimes the dog zoomies will strike your dog not just at a moment that’s inconvenient (like when dinner guests are about to arrive), but at a time or place that’s actually dangerous, like off leash at a dog park that isn’t fenced (please always obey leash laws). In a situation like that, you need to catch your dog quickly, and when a dog has the zoomies he might “forget” his training.
The most important thing, which seems counterintuitive, is not chasing after a frapping dog. If you chase your dog, he is likely to misinterpret this as you playing with him. That will inspire him to continue running! Instead of chasing your dog, run away from him (in a direction free of roads or other dangers) and encourage your dog to follow you in a happy voice. It’s good to be prepared for this moment, and make sure to have high-value treats and/or toys on you at all times.
On a related note, teach your dog that “come” is always a fun idea. To do this, regularly practice recalls with your dog on a longline or in a safely fenced area using treats, praise and other positive techniques to teach your dog to reliably come. Never punish your dog for not coming when called, instead set up training situations that enable him to be successful next time by decreasing distractions, adding a leash or longline, decreasing the distance you are from your dog when you call her, and/or using a higher value treat as a reward.
