Delhi Police's Safer Internet Month Campaign Against Cybercrime

Officials have announced that the Delhi Police has begun uploading and promoting videos on cyber awareness every day as part of their Safer Internet Month campaign, which started on Monday. The campaign, titled "Cool bano idiot nahi," aims to promote awareness about the rapid spread of cybercrime. A one-minute video will be posted every day until February 28th, according to a senior police officer, and the campaign is intended for people of all ages.

Claiming that interspersing music and message makes the film more engaging for a wider audience, officials stated that the film discusses creative awareness in a comical way.

Police have announced that the daily one-minute video posted as part of the "Cool bano idiot nahi" campaign during Safer Internet Month covers a range of topics, including earning money from home, insurance fraud, ransomware updates, protecting yourself during holiday online shopping, payment gateway fraud, cyber bullying, WhatsApp and social media fake accounts, sextortion via video calls, lottery and reward scams, and using dating apps safely.

On Monday, the Delhi Police tweeted a video with the tagline "Raise your awareness of potential online threats as we all mark Safer Internet Day." The police department recommends residents to use the internet carefully and prudently to protect themselves from cyber fraud and crime, accompanied by the hashtag #FoolNahiCoolBane.

In conclusion, the Delhi Police's campaign for Safer Internet Month is a much-needed initiative to raise awareness about cyber threats and promote safe online behavior. By educating citizens of all ages about the various online threats and how to protect themselves from them, the police hope to create a safer and more secure online environment for everyone.

Biden's War Of The Worlds

Unfortunately, the threat of nuclear war looms as possible today as it did when I was a child. I no longer practice hiding under my desk whenever a siren goes off, but I shudder to read Vladimir Putin’s cavalier talk about using nuclear weapons against Ukraine in his stalemated war.  As I write, President Joe Biden is meeting with NATO allies in Brussels to develop a plan if the dictator follows through with his threat. Atomic radiation knows no geographic boundaries, so he’s wise to contemplate the worst. Will Biden’s diplomacy and the West’s economic sanctions reign in Putin? Having no way to determine the state of the dictator’s mind, Biden is forced to guess. Is his opponent mad or desperate enough to do anything to save face?  One journalist suggests Putin’s swollen face may be due to steroids and that he is unwell.  (“Putin vs. NATO” The Week, March 18, 2022. pg. 6.)  U. S. Senator Marco Rubio puts these questions succinctly.  “It’s pretty obvious that something is off.” (Ibid, pg. 6) So far, not knowing how to coax Putin down from his limb, Biden has played a cautious hand. That caution has frustrated some.  Even those who approve of his strategy would like him to do more. In the main, a majority of Americans approve of his approach. They also support how he’s handled the pandemic. Sabotaging his total success are anti-vaxxers who also refuse to wear masks. As a result, the virus continues to mutate and pose a threat to the nation’s health.  Another internal problem Biden faces is the aftermath of the January 6, 2021 insurrection.  Key participants in this attempt to overthrow the government have suffered few consequences. Some plan to run for public office. They’ll find friends waiting for them should they succeed, other Congressional men and women who defended and possibly abetted the assault.  If the conflict in the real world wasn’t enough on Biden’s plate, he faces increasing disturbances in the virtual one. Cyberspace is a place where wars are fought by individuals as well as nations. Tech giants like Microsoft are vulnerable to extortion rings. Likewise, Greece’s postal service suffered an assault. To deal with ransomware problems, Biden has taken a unified approach, just as he has with NATO  He’s rallied other nations to join the U. S. in tackling the problem.     Will it work? Unlike geographic battlegrounds where terrain dictates strategies, the virtual world poses no similar impediments. Assault methods are infinite, and they constantly change Take passwords, for example. In a growing number of cases, cybercriminals no longer need to crack them. They enter sites via hashtags.  Complex combinations of letters, numbers, and symbols may no longer deter a thief.  If we look closer, many of these hackers come from Russia, a point where the real and virtual worlds converge. Biden’s dilemma is how to promote peace in both realms, a task complicated when insanity passes for the norm.  A recent NPR/PBS poll shows Biden is losing public approval.  They may applaud his handling of the pandemic, his statesmanship concerning the Ukraine war, feel more secure now that he’s reinvigorated NATO, passed a landmark infrastructure bill, appointed the first Black woman to the Supreme Court, and presides over a booming economy. Evens so, they see his first year in office as a failure. I disagree with that assessment. Since his election, I sleep better than I did when his predecessor was in office. Those who continue to give him a thumbs down leave me baffled. I’m reminded of a quote attributed to Winston Church. The words weren’t his, but they bear repeating.  “The best argument against democracy is a five-minute talk with the average voter”

Pitney Bowes Hit with Ransomware Attack

The attack left customers unable to access key services for shipping and mailing, the company said.

Shipping services company Pitney Bowes was hit with a ransomware attack that disrupted customer access to key services, the company said Monday.

The attack comes on the heels of an FBI advisory on Oct. 2 that U.S. companies should be on alert for ransomware attacks, which are increasing in sophistication.

A malware attack encrypted information on some systems but did not seem to access any customer or employee data, the company said in a statement on its website. Officials immediately asked the Enterprise Outage Response Team to address the situation following its awareness of the attack, the company said. “Our technical team is working to restore the affected systems, and it is working closely with third-party consultants to address this matter,” according to the statement.

Systems affected included Pitney Bowes’ mailing system products and customers’ access to Your Account. A number of other services were offline or unavailable due to the attack, including SendPro Online in the United Kingdom and Canada, according to Pitney Bowes.

“Clients are unable to refill postage or upload transactions on their mailing machine,” the company said in the statement. “Your Account and the Pitney Bowes Supplies web store cannot be accessed. This in turn impacts clients subscribed to AutoInk and our Supplies App.”

More than 1.5 million customers worldwide use Pitney Bowes’ services, which streamline shipping and mailing for clients, which include some Fortune 500 companies. The company asked for those customers’ patience as it worked to restore services to normal after the attack.

If Twitter comments are any indication, the attack did cause business disruption for some clients. In addition to large organizations, Pitney Bowes also counts users of do-it-yourself e-commerce sites like Etsy and Shopify among its customers.

“@PitneyBowes got hacked & our postage meter is being held hostage,” according to a Tweet Monday by user Andrea Dembo, who seemed to try to lighten the seriousness of the situation with the hashtag #freethemeter.

The Tweet was met with a series of replies from other Twitter users, even outside the United States, who said that they were experiencing similar disruptions in their Pitney Bowes services.

“Same here, we’re in Ireland and we’re locked out too. Annoying!” Tweeted user Mike Devereux.

Ransomware attacks—in which attackers hijack targets’ systems until they pay a ransom, often in Bitcoin—are some of the earliest tools of hackers, yet they remain relevant because they mean easy money for cybercriminals.

Attackers continue to add sophistication to this long-used form of malware to fool companies that are unaware of how insecure their systems–as well as the systems of business partners–really are, security experts noted.

“Ransomware provides an easy income for cybercriminals targeting successful corporations, which are typically taken completely by surprise when they learn just how many unsecured IT assets their ecosystem partners and subsidiaries have, and what an easy target for exfiltration and ransomware those assets present,” said Raphael Reich, vice president of cloud-based security firm CyCognito, in an e-mailed statement.

During a Wednesday morning interview, SEC Chair Gary Gensler clarified that the approval of Bitcoin ETFs in January does not signify an endorsement of the cryptocurrency itself. He explained that the approval of spot Bitcoin ETFs is similar to the approval of gold and silver exchange-traded products (ETPs). Gensler emphasized that the SEC's role is to protect investors from fraud and market manipulation, as many cryptocurrencies are considered unregistered securities. He also highlighted the use of cryptocurrencies in illicit activities, such as ransomware and money laundering.
