Developed a sense of independence at a young age. These natives were likely more confident in doing things alone compared to their peers. Retrograde: Their strong sense of independence may have greatly separated them from their peers. Also may have been a little too competitve and therefore earned a lot of eyerolls. May have also taken a bit longer to accumulate athleticism. Also may have lost a few games lol. Or isolated by their team for being too good. Could've had trouble with managing their anger as well. Overall were forced to deal with this Martian energy at a very young age which was likely very painful and confusing.

Developed a sense of luxury at a young age. May have been introduced to the finer things in life in their childhood and therefore gained an understanding of what makes them feel luxurious. Very quick to learn not only the monetary value of material possessions but also the emotional and personal value attached to them.

They also incorporated their 5 senses into these strategies, which therefore helped them feel more grounded in their bodies. A fairly emotionally healthy placement.

Retrograde: Could've been a bit too materialistic, demanding frequent purchases, never completely satisfied. Their headstrength may have been high but perhaps towards the wrong things at times. Could've defended themselves so much that more was taken out of their life than brought in. Laziness may have been a problem but honestly I see it as moreso of a desire to maintain the sense of peace they crave deeply.

Developed intelligence at a young age. Probably exceeded some of the expectations for children their age, whether that was in reading or math or any other subject. Not only that, but they also learned how to study at a young age. These natives definitely figured out the best ways for them to absorb information way before others, and as a result, found more success in their intelligence. This can also be an indicator of graduating early from (usually) high school.

Developed motor skills and communication skills at a really young age. This placement reminds me of babies who learn how to walk really quickly. Probably were speaking full, coherent sentences before they even knew they were alive. They likely picked up things like writing (the physical act of moving the hand in this case), typing, tying their shoes, and other motor skills fairly quickly. In general, these natives likely seemed a lot more developed in almost everything than kids their age. This is an excellent placement.

Retrograde: May have been in a school that couldn't fully accommodate their intelligence needs. They could've spent a lot of time in classes that were too easy for them. May have also been under/overestimated in terms of their skills, which could've led them to some difficult situations. Could also manifest as impatience with others for lacking certain abilities, but this typically goes away with age. Could've been called annoying or looked down upon from their peers, simply because they attracted jealousy.

Developed emotional intelligence at a young age. Similar to Aries/1st house, these natives were likely very emotional children, and therefore were almost forced to observe their emotions. They likely had to develop coping mechanisms and just understand their emotions a lot sooner than their peers. May have found the exact things they need to deal with their emotions. This can be good obviously, but it can also be intense.

Developed intuition and empathy at a young age. This is common among all of the water placements. This reminds me of a kid who had gut feelings about things before they actually ended up happening and weren't believed... Then they'd happen and it would just be brushed off. This especially applies to interpersonal matters. Could've made adults and other children alike uncomfortable due to this. Very receptive. This is a good placement but this can be difficult, it can be a lot of weight on a child.

Similar to my previous point, but these kids had to learn how to nurture themselves and especially everyone else around them when they were very young. They observed and understood what makes people feel comforted. They probably have a toolbox of how to properly deal with every emotion for both themselves and others. They always knew exactly what to say to people during emotional moments and could've come off as very profound for their age as a result.

Retrograde: Their ability to fully feel their emotions may have angered a lot of people around them. They aren't too fearful in their expression and that could've been a lot for both themselves and others to deal with. I said this already but this is emphasized in Retrograde: Undermined intuitive abilities. Could've been mocked or suppressed for them. Also could've unintentionally taken on more emotional weight for others than they should've.

Developed creative talents at a young age. Most children are very imaginative and therefore creative, but something about this placement in particular helps them stand out. These children were likely creatively talented beyond their years. Likely gained talents and made them serious way before their peers. They didn't see art as an activity but rather as a way to express themselves, which therefore helped them tap into it more. Incredible artistic abilities in whatever medium they choose, and likely have one they started at a young age and are still amazing at.

Developed self-confidence at a young age. These natives likely always felt comfortable expressing themselves fully, and if not, they definitely did when they were younger. This kind of relates to my last point but they always knew what their talents were and therefore knew their potential. They've seen themselves at their best and are confident in the fact that they can revive that part of them whenever needed. Instead of seeing this later in life though, they saw it as children, and therefore were able to become truly confident in themselves at a much younger age than their peers.

Developed "star quality" at a young age. I do think this specific placement can be one of many young fame indicators, especially if it is tightly conjunct a personal planet. That said, Demi Lovato and Nick Jonas, two celebrities who got famous at a young age, both have this placement (in Leo, I didn't check which house but the energy is still there). These natives combined their self-confidence with their creative talents and therefore were able to project themselves with such amazing creativity that it made them incredible for their age. It didn't take long for them to come off as professionals in whatever creative medium they chose, making them hard to ignore. Very talented.

Retrograde: Could've had a hard time practicing their creative talents whether that was due to being suppressed by external factors (money, social pressure, etc) or internal things. May have had talent but not been completely comfortable sharing it. They could've been incredibly underestimated and that was the main thing that gave them their confidence.. they knew their potential but others may not have, or may have tried to put them down. Many challenges with getting in the spotlight in general.

Developed practicality at a young age. This isn't exclusive to one area of life. These natives know the best ways to succeed at just about everything but especially day-to-day matters. They learned exactly how each step of a task can connect to one another, which ones can be cut out or modified to be more efficient, and whatever needs to be added. They had an impressive ability to get things done with precision and were likely much more detail-oriented than other children their age.

Retrograde: Practicality may have taken a lot of trial and error to obtain. May have also been mislead about it as well, being told that their way of doing things was incorrect. Their discipline could've been underestimated, and they could've been told that they didn't need to worry about certain things at that point. They also may have not had a lot of people to help, or were excluded from opportunities simply due to their age. Overall their skillset may have not been too useful as a child and didn't end up helping them too much until they got older.

Developed social skills at a young age. These natives were practically born with the ability to make anyone feel comfortable around them. They could’ve been popular when they were younger as well. Definitely observed how other socialize and what works/what doesn’t.

Developed an understanding of the deeper parts of life at a young age. These natives may have been exposed to death, transformations, and possibly the Occult (these are just some of the things) at a young age, and were required to ‘get used to’ them. Very strong in dealing with areas of life no child should have to deal with.

Developed an understanding of debt at a young age. These natives may have had caregivers in their lives who were in debt, and they just had to watch it play out. They had to observe and learn how debt is dealt with as literal children. Not always financial debt though, these natives quickly understood the rules of Karma and consequences at a young age. Painful, but useful later on. These children may have a lot taken from themselves and others around them, therefore almost having to make peace with the fact that this kind of thing exists. May have detached value from objects, people, places, etc for no reason, simply due to their perceived chance of having to surrender them later on. Hugs for you all 🫂

Retrograde: Learning about the darker parts of life through many experiences, may not have understood how to apply their prior knowledge to work through these moments until later on. May have felt hopelessness toward the Universe after seeing and/or going through so much suffering. May have had things stolen from them frequently, forced surrender. Huge fear of Karma because they understand it so well. Also, sharing when they didn’t want to.

Developed a need to broaden horizons at a young age. These natives likely felt very limited whenever they had to stay in one place, and craved to be exposed to other perspectives way before anyone else. They always had a desire to be seen as a mentor, to be seen as someone with a lot of wisdom, especially at a young age. They may have wanted to publish their beliefs somehow. They saw how their wisdom and optimism affected their peers, and therefore wanted to help others later on as well. They wanted to go far and then help others do the same. Not an easy placement but incredibly spiritually intelligent.

Retrograde: May have had little to no opportunities to travel, and may have had this desire forcefully suppressed because of their environment. Definitely have been told “Don’t worry about that yet, wait until you’re older”… Developed wisdom and optimism but at a cost. May have been wavering and/or developed solely as a result of bad experiences. They may not have much faith or it may take them longer to accumulate it. Similar to what I’ve already said but they may have been mocked for their ideas. People may have just not been able to hear them or purposely ignored them. Not to mention that school might’ve been a challenge for them as well.

Developed a reputation at a young age. These natives may have been popular as children as well, and for that reason, had a lot of peers watching them and building beliefs from that point on. Usually when direct, this is a good reputation. They may have a good amount of childhood friends who still support them to this day. How they were seen as a child may follow them into adulthood, as well. This can be a fame indicator or even a nepo baby one as well. They also understood exactly what they need to maintain their reputation or to change it. Very intelligent in terms of the public eye, they handle being in high positions very well since they learned how as a child.

The career they chose may not have accepted them at first, too. Maybe they learned the wrong things or took the wrong shots in general, their knowledge from when they were younger not helping much. May have had a little to work harder for just about everything but especially career matters.

Developed innovation at a young age. These natives likely had big ideas for certain things as children, and were always thinking about how something could be better. This could apply to any area of their life. They were very much forward thinkers as children and had a vision for something. Like Capricorn/10th house, what they did in their youth may not have helped them later on.

Sooner 18876 in Pisces/12th house/12°, 24°:

Understood the value of introspection at a young age. These children likely engaged in introspection very frequently (which may lessen as they age), and therefore possibly spent a lot of time alone. They were very interested in discovering the parts of themselves and reading their personality before most people their age. Their introspective nature definitely helped them later on, as they were able to use what they learned to continue to understand themselves. As children, these natives may have come off as hermits. Definitely a lot of weight for a child but they don’t seem to mind much.

In the 12th: This placement may have had trouble accessing the qualities of whichever sign it is in especially at a young age. If this is direct, it usually is solved around the teenage years, and the traits can be embodied more. If retrograde, these traits may have genuinely never been accessible, or even seemed like they made things worse. This is not an easy placement at all I fear..

Retrograde: They may have craved more alone time than they could get. May have dug a little too deep into themselves, which could’ve caused a lot of fear and shame at such a young age. As I mentioned, when this is retrograde, recurring nightmares that began in childhood are very common. Nightmare themes from childhood will likely never go away. Ashlesha is about breaking free from “motherly” restrictions to avoid becoming frozen or paralyzed in a state of innocence or naivety. It represents the struggle of moving beyond a sheltered, virginal state. In “The Year of the Carnivore,” Cristin Milioti an Ashlesha native plays Sammy Smalls, a young woman stuck in a grocery store job she dislikes but keeps to avoid moving back in with her overbearing parents. Sammy’s life takes a turn when she develops a crush, and after an awkward sexual encounter, the guy tells her she is sexually immature due to her inexperience. This criticism triggers a spiral for Sammy, pushing her into a series of awkward, misguided sexual experiments as she tries to gain experience. One telling scene shows Sammy getting intimate with a guy but unable to stop laughing — a clear sign of discomfort with physical touch.

This aligns with the nature of Ashlesha, whose yoni (animal symbol) is the male cat, considered the least sexual yoni in terms of directness, reproduction, and penetration. Like a cat, Ashlesha can be finicky, picky, and indirect, preferring to preserve their energy. This focus on energy preservation is tied to Ashlesha’s connection with water the most easily polluted element. Water signs like Cancer (Ashlesha’s zodiac sign) and Pisces are especially vulnerable to contamination, which is why Ashlesha women are often concerned with purity and self-protection. Ashlesha natives often need to explore sex in a way that genuinely gratifies them, and their indirect, cautious approach can sometimes lead to an aggressive or even predatory sexual expression a “man-eating” or cannibalistic trope.

This is seen in “Raw,” where Garance Marillier who has an Ashlesha ☽ and an Uttara Bhadrapada ↑ plays Justine, a veterinary student raised as a strict vegetarian by her overprotective mother. When Justine is forced to eat raw rabbit meat during a hazing ritual, she develops an intense, almost uncontrollable craving for raw flesh, leading to a disturbing transformation. Her struggle with hunger and primal urges is a dark, exaggerated portrayal of Ashlesha’s conflicted relationship with instinct, hunger, and desire. After experiencing intense cravings for meat, Justine feels ashamed and begins secretly eating raw meat. Her hunger takes a darker turn when her sister Alexia accidentally cuts off her finger and instead of helping, Justine picks it up and starts chewing on it. Justine’s hunger for human flesh intensifies and begins to blur with her feelings of lust, especially toward her roommate, Adrien. Adrien is more sexually experienced, while Justine is still a virgin and unfamiliar with her own desires. During a hazing ritual, she is pressured to kiss a boy but ends up biting his bottom lip instead. Later, when she has sex with Adrien, she struggles with an urge to devour him but manages to control herself, biting her own arm instead and experiencing an orgasm.

In “Jennifer’s Body,” Megan Fox an Ashlesha ☽ native plays Jennifer Check, a high school girl known for her wild reputation. One night, Jennifer and her best friend Needy go to a local bar to see an out-of-town band perform. The lead singer, mistakenly believing Jennifer is a virgin, decides to sacrifice her for fame and fortune. But the ritual backfires because Jennifer isn’t a virgin, and she is transformed into a succubus instead of dying. As a succubus, Jennifer begins seducing and killing local boys, feeding on them to maintain her beauty and vitality. If she goes too long without eating, she becomes pale and withered, needing “male meat” to stay healthy and beautiful. These stories highlight Ashlesha’s intense, pent-up feminine energy a force that is both alluring and dangerous. Ashlesha is like a group of hidden, pure water creatures sensitive, waiting, and filled with angsty, sexualized energy. It craves something strong enough to resist or contain it. When that strength is absent, Ashlesha’s energy can become consuming, uncoiling and rising like a serpent, leading to a kind of bliss or ecstasy. Despite its connection to inexperience or naivety, Ashlesha has a fierce, almost predatory side. Its intensity is rooted in a primal hunger, making it one of the most dangerously passionate nakshatras, especially when its desires are awakened.

Uttara Bhadrapada, with its Saturnian influence and connection to the deep waters of the subconscious, often manifests as a struggle between repression and chaotic release, especially when it comes to sexuality. The nakshatra’s link to hidden depths means that emotions and desires are often buried, but when they surface, they can do so violently or in distorted ways. This is evident in two films featuring Uttara Bhadrapada natives: “The Piano Teacher” and “A Dangerous Method.” In “The Piano Teacher,” Erika Kohut (played by Uttara Bhadrapada ☽ Isabelle Huppert) is a rigid, troubled piano professor in her late thirties, living under the suffocating control of her elderly mother in Vienna. Her father spent years in a psychiatric asylum, and Erika’s entire life is a study in repression she leads a scheduled, lonely existence, pouring all her energy into her strict, almost cruel teaching style. Her mastery of classical music, (which @invenusworld has linked to Saturn nakshatras) is her only source of pride, but it also becomes a prison. For Erika, who was conditioned to believe that only her piano skills had value, everything else beauty, charm, or love seems beyond her reach. Erika embodies the detached, mysterious qualities of Uttara Bhadrapada. She feels fundamentally excluded from the world around her, a theme captured in the novel by Elfriede Jelinek: “She feels left out of everything because she is left out of everything. Others go farther, even climbing over her. She looks like such a minor obstruction… The paper can’t get very far, it rots away right there. The rotting takes years, monotonous years.” This isolation and repression transform her desires into something dark and destructive. Her sexual needs, suppressed for so long, emerge through voyeurism, sadomasochism, and self-harm. Uttara Bhadrapada’s connection to Saturn (restriction) and the 12th house (hidden desires, self-undoing) makes Erika a prisoner of her own twisted cravings. Her attempt to control her sexuality leads to a disturbing power struggle with Walter Klemmer, a young pianist who becomes fascinated with her. Although she is impressed by his talent, she tries to sabotage his acceptance as her student, a reflection of her fear of losing control. Her insecurity peaks when she sabotages another student, Anna, injuring her to steal her performance opportunity. Walter’s interest in Erika turns into a toxic, violent relationship.

When she tries to control their encounters with a list of masochistic fantasies, Walter is disgusted and calls her sick. Uttara Bhadrapada, with its mix of Saturn’s restraint and the 12th house’s hidden darkness, can manifest as a craving for the forbidden but also a fear of being consumed by it. Erika’s attempt to engage with her desires becomes self-destructive. Her repression is so severe that even when she tries to submit to Walter at an ice rink, she becomes overwhelmed and vomits. Later, when Walter arrives at her apartment and violently assaults her, acting out the fantasies she had described, it becomes the ultimate loss of control a tragic consequence of her conflicted desires, which she never truly wanted to become reality. What Erika genuinely craved was affection and love, but her need for them was distorted into unhealthy perversion. The next day, she brings a knife to the concert hall where she is set to perform in Anna’s place. When she sees Walter laughing with his family, she calmly stabs herself in the shoulder and walks away, her self-harm a final act of despair and self-punishment.

The Andromeda myth, tied to Uttara Bhadrapada, is a story of captivity, sacrifice, and transformation. Andromeda, a princess chained to a rock as an offering to a sea monster, represents the themes of being trapped, suffering for the sins of others, and the potential for liberation through divine intervention. These themes echo the emotional and psychological struggles associated with Uttara Bhadrapada, where hidden fears, repressed desires, and subconscious turmoil create an internal prison. Yet, like Andromeda, the potential for transformation always exists, even in the darkest moments.

Uttara Bhadrapada’s connection to Andromeda can be seen in how its natives often experience deep psychological suffering or repression, feeling bound by invisible chains whether through strict upbringing, oppressive relationships, or their own unresolved fears. This nakshatra is ruled by Ahir Budhnya, the serpent of the deep, a being bound to the ocean’s depths yet holding vast knowledge. Like Andromeda, who is saved by Perseus, Uttara Bhadrapada’s struggle is not without hope. Transformation comes when they confront the monstrous aspects of their subconscious, freeing themselves through self-awareness or a profound emotional release.

This theme is vividly portrayed in “The Piano Teacher,” where Erika Kohut (Uttara Bhadrapada ☽ Isabelle Huppert) is emotionally chained by her controlling mother and repressed desires. Her strict, punishing approach to life is a form of self-imposed captivity, but beneath her cold exterior lies a sea of chaotic, unfulfilled desires. Her voyeurism, sadomasochism, and self-harm are expressions of this repressed energy breaking through, much like the sea monster in the Andromeda myth. When she meets Walter, their interactions become a cruel power struggle a battle between her need for control and her longing for release. Walter initially seems like a liberator but becomes another form of torment when he violently acts out her fantasies, leaving Erika even more wounded. Her final act of self-harm before walking out of the concert hall is a twisted attempt at reclaiming her agency a distorted form of freedom.

In “A Dangerous Method,” Sabina Spielrein (Uttara Bhadrapada ☉ Keira Knightley) is also trapped by her traumatic memories and her intense, conflicted desires. Her hysteria and emotional suffering are symptoms of unprocessed trauma, but they are also the source of her transformation. Through her relationship with Carl Jung, she confronts the darkness of her past, ultimately transforming her suffering into insight, becoming a pioneer in psychoanalysis. Her journey from patient to healer reflects Uttara Bhadrapada’s power to turn pain into wisdom, just as Andromeda is saved and transformed by her ordeal.

“Augustine” portrays another trapped woman, Augustine (Uttara Bhadrapada ↑ Soko), who is institutionalized after violent fits and paralysis. Charcot’s obsessive study of her turns her suffering into a spectacle, reducing her to a subject of medical curiosity. But Augustine’s symptoms seizures, loss of sensation, and fainting are not just physical. They are expressions of repressed emotions and desires struggling to surface, much like Kundalini energy coiled in the depths. Her final escape from the institution, after using her supposed hysteria to manipulate Charcot, is a symbolic liberation, a rejection of being used and controlled.

Going back to the cannibalistic narratives of “Raw” (starring Ashlesha ☉, Uttara Bhadrapada ↑ Garance Marillier) and “Bones and All” (directed by Ashlesha ☉, Uttara Bhadrapada ☽ Luca Guadagnino and starring Uttara Bhadrapada ☽ Timothée Chalamet). In “Raw,” Justine is overwhelmed by her repressed hunger, both literal and metaphorical, which becomes monstrous when she tastes human flesh. Her descent into cannibalism is a grotesque form of transformation, where she must confront the darkness within herself a classic Uttara Bhadrapada struggle. In “Bones and All,” Chalamet’s character lures his victims through seduction, a serpent-like dance that combines hunger, desire, and violence. His embrace of a man in the cornfield, wrapping around him before striking, is a direct nod to the snake symbolism of Ahir Budhnya the hidden hunger that coils around its prey. These cannibalistic themes reveal the shadow side of Uttara Bhadrapada, where suppressed desires erupt in monstrous ways. But they also hint at the potential for transformation, as both characters are forced to confront the darkness within them. These stories show how Uttara Bhadrapada’s Andromeda connection is not just about suffering but about the choice to either remain trapped or transform to either let the sea monster devour you or find a way to break free.

Grief Has No Shape [P.G8]

A/N: Sorry for being MIA, I have been focusing on university. I wrote this piece as a way to channel the grief I often carry around when it comes to my grandfather. Although he passed away when I was 11, I often feel down when I see people who have grown up with their grandparents near them. It makes me wonder how his and I’s relationship could have evolved, the bond we could have developed had we had more time, had cancer not happened. To all of those who are grieving, or have been grieving, I send you all my love xx

Grief was weird. It knew no bound, no shape, and it didn’t have an expiration date. You have grieved your native city, relationships and friendships, life experiences that were ripped away from you, but the hardest was when death and its effects rippled through your life.

You walked back into the shared house, the dimmed lights greeting you, the lack of warmth holding a mirror to your reality. Your bag slid off your shoulder as you took off your shoes. On the console table, a card caught your attention. You slowly picked it up, your eyes glazing over the picture, your heart clenching at the sight of that smile that once felt like home. The front door opened once again, this time, Pedri walking into the house. He was holding a bouquet of flowers, which he gently placed on the mahogany table. He untied his tie, slipping off his shoes, his hand faintly laying flush against your waist.

“I’ll make us something to eat.” He placed a kiss on your cheek, his hand stroking your hair. “I’m so sorry, mi vida.” He held your face in his hands. You looked away, kissing the palm of his hands, feeling your grief flooding back to the surface. You leaned in closer, the weight of everything bringing you on the verge of tears. Your arms hugged Pedri’s waist, the sound of his heart keeping you from spiraling.

He led you to the couch, sitting you gently. Before you could react, his grip tightened on you, holding you with such force that you thought your ribs would break. On any other day you would have jokingly kicked him away, tickling him under the chin, leading to him loosening his grip on you. But today, you needed his reassurance, you needed his presence to keep you sane.

The faint ticks of the clock in the dining room crowded the room. Feeling unable to verbally communicate the weight of your emotions, you laid back into his arms. Outside, the neighborhood was vibrant; the sound of family picnics; laughing children; and faint music flowing through the streets, creating a stark contrast between your life and the one outside.

As if life was punishing you, you heard a child in the streets scream.

“Abuelo, espérame!”

You buried your head into Pedri’s chest, unleashing all the grief you had been enduring for the past days. Your shoulders shook as your walls came crashing down. Your chest tightened, your mind racing to all the times where you had come short of being a good granddaughter.

“Shhh.” Pedri cooed as he rubbed your back in a desperate attempt to regulate your breathing. He leaned over, grabbing a tissue, lifting your head to wipe away your tears. You closed your eyes at the gesture.

“How does one get over this?” You asked, the emptiness of the room making your skin crawl. It had been 4 days since you had received the call that had changed your life. 4 days since you had fallen down to your knees, your sobs flooding your face as you called out for his name, praying to God that it wasn’t real. 4 days since Pedri had rushed out of training as soon as he got word of what had happened.

He unbuttoned his cuffs, scooching closer to you. He took your hands in his, thumb rubbing your skin in a slow, circular motion.

“Mi vida…You don’t. And I know it’s probably not the answer that you’re looking for, but…the grief will eventually subside and you’ll feel better. It’ll stop occupying all this space and will eventually find its own place in your soul.” He took a deep breath. “Grief is love that has nowhere to go.” He bent over, pressing a kiss to your forehead. Pedri took your hands, placing a delicate kiss on each knuckle.

“Despite the distance, you showed up for all the family reunions, every doctor’s appointment, every birthday. When some family members took advantage of his situation and stole from him, you stood your ground. Put his most precious possessions into a safe and changed the locks on his house.”

You cracked a shy smile.

“I just miss him, you know? I’ll miss how he used to call as soon as the clock struck twelve on my birthday, or how he always had my favorite candle burning in the kitchen whenever I visited.” You fiddled with the obituary picture in front of you. “He was a good man, Pepito.” You laid back into his arms. “He taught me how to ride a bike, and how to change a tire. And he made the best walnut pie.” You chuckled.

“He helped raise a strong, courageous and righteous woman, who has a soul as warm and welcoming as a thousand suns. You may feel like you’re scared of losing the memories of your grandfather, but I promise you, for as long as you breathe, his love will shine through your actions.” His hand brushed over your thigh, giving you a reassuring squeeze. He got up from the couch and walked over to the kitchen, flicking the lights on as he began to rummage through the pantry.

“What are you looking for?” You asked him without getting up from the couch.

“Something.. you’ll see.” He waved you away, his head still in the pantry cabinet.

You sat back, your body melting into the soft fabric of the couch. As your mind begins to wander, you find yourself being lulled to sleep by the ticks of the dining room clock. Unbeknownst to you, Pedri set the dusted book down on the coffee table, hoping that you’ll find comfort in it, once you woke up.

A few hours had passed when you began to stir awake from your sleep. The house looked different. The sun was shining lower in the sky, the air was colder and sharper, and you were hungry, very very hungry. You looked around the room, only to be met with silence, and darkness. A similar smell passed you by, a smell that reminded you of home. Walnuts, butter, brown sugar…

“Pedri?” You got up from the couch, making your way across the house.

“Bathroom!” He yelled out, meeting you halfway in the hallway. “How’d you sleep?” He kissed the top of your head gently.

“Not bad…that couch is insanely comfortable.” You buried yourself against his chest, arms hanging around his waist.

“I’m glad, my love. I have good taste in furniture.” He hyped himself up, wiping away his hands from the excess lotion. His hand found yours, dragging you to the bedroom. Out on the bed, lay a pair of pjs.

“Why don’t you get changed and meet me on the couch in a few? Mh?” He left you alone to get changed, his scent hanging in the air as he exited the room. You sat on the bed, the task of getting out of these clothes seeming impossible. You had never particularly liked this specific pair of pants, nor the shirt, but they were your grandfather’s favourites. You closed your eyes as you took off the shirt, the fabric heavy in between your hands. Your skin felt hot and cold at the same time, confusing feelings taking over. Would you ever be able to wear these clothes again? You fiddled with the garments before throwing them at the back of your closet, choosing to avoid the issue. The pyjamas Pedri had laid out felt plush and soft against your skin, like a built in hug that never faltered.

You met him back on the couch, his head turning at the sound of your feet against the floor. He extended his hand out to you, his eyes lighting up at the sight of you. You plopped down next to him, your head resting on his shoulder.

“I made something for you while you were asleep.” He handed you a plate where laid a slice of pie…a walnut pie. Walnuts, butter, brown sugar… You took a whiff of the dessert, your heart swelling with gratitude. You grabbed the spoon, digging carefully into the slice. The flavours exploded in your mouth, memories flooding your mind.

“I… don’t know what to say, Pedri.” You said, setting down the plate on the coffee table. “It’s exactly how he used to make it.” You hid your sob. “How did you know? How do you have the recipe? He never wrote it down for anyone.” Your voice choked up.

He knelt down to pick up the dusted book.

“When he got the diagnosis that the cancer had spread, he came to me. We got to talking, and he explained to me how cooking together was an activity that meant a lot to the both of you. We got to work together, creating a cookbook of all the recipes he wished to pass down to you. There’s about…every recipe you guys have ever cooked together, as well as family recipes. He made me promise to give you the book only after he passed.” He handed it to you, the weight of the book taking you by surprise.

Your fingers traced the fine engraving on the leather jacket, the title making your heart clench. ‘The Best Granddaughter’s Guide to Cooking’. You fought back the tears as you began flicking through the pages, your heart swelling with every turn of the page. There, in all its glory, was the walnut pie’s recipe. In writing, in physical form for you to keep for the rest of time. You looked back at Pedri with glossy eyes, a thankful smile on your lips.

“Thank you.” You whispered, a knot in your throat.

As you continued to flick through the heirloom, your eyes caught the pictures added to each recipe. Pictures of birthdays, monthly visits, family vacations, the first time you had ever cooked with your grandfather. Your favorite picture was the one where you were sitting on his lap pretending to read the newspaper in a language you had no knowledge of.

It then dawned on you, that your grief would always follow you. Grief was indeed love that has nowhere to go, but it was the ultimate act of love you could show someone who meant so much to you. Some days would be easier, some wouldn’t, but as time would go on, you’d learn to live with the loss, turning it into an eternal symbol of love for your grandfather. You were mad at life for putting you in this position, but it was undeniably a guaranteed cost of being alive and loving.

the 12h has an ominous reputation, rightfully so. 12h themes are very difficult for most of us to deal with. the 12h is about our yearning for the safety of the womb, to be surrounded by everything and nothing, to be complete and whole. we suffer the trauma of separation to be born and struggle to find that unity for the rest of our lives. our ego and individuality directly conflicts with this emptiness we subconsciously (usually) want to fill.

we want to be connected and return to source. we want to be bigger than ourselves. but we also are very attached to our identity. this internal struggle especially affects 12h placements. love, sex, drugs, prayer, and power are common things used to deal with this urge of being connected or blurring boundaries.

So, today I just finished watching the Lilo and Stitch (2025) remake in theaters, and going in I was nervous. I've seen all the rumors and have been keeping my ear to the ground, but my mother urged me to at least try (shes a die-hard Disney lover and has hope for the company). So as a family, we went to see it. Here's my thoughts on the most common rumors Ive seen around, and my interpretations of a lot of the critiques. What happened here?

The loss of the found family trope, and by extension, the message of Ohana:

Adding to this take is a sense of modernization that the original movie wasn't capable of having, as Nani and Lilo communicate through the long distance using video calls to see each other on a regular basis.

In the movie this decision isn't put into the indigenous perspective of native Hawaiians, but it doesn't entirely come off as colonial either. While college is cheaper to native Hawaiians (not free, as far as I can tell through resources!), Tutu claims the college Nani is looking at is the best in the world for her career path, and that she had already been accepted before anyways. As the movie continues and we get the development of Cobra Bubbles (Courtney B. Vance) who has been changed from a social worker to be a full-time CIA agent whose initial goal is to capture Stitch. The movie still ends with him as part of the found family, but specifically only to "Keep an eye on Stitch" instead of the entire family itself. He has a warm smile and goes up to Lilo's room to check on her in the ending scenes, showing him to be comfortable in the house.

With the addition of Pleakley, not much else changes in their family dynamics.

Pro-colonialist and military propaganda messaging:

"'I made a promise to protect the American people!' ---- 'Aren't we a part of that?!'"

(Agent Cobra Bubbles reacting to the backlash from the Pelekai and their support circle as he takes Pleakly into custody for questioning. In response, the neighbor, Tutu makes a statement saying that they ARE a part of that. This is the driving statement that causes Cobra to change his objective and transition from side-antagonist to an ally.)

There's a lot to be said about making Cobra an antagonistic force for a good majority of the movie, as him being the only black character in both films. That isn't the entire point here, but should be acknowledged. He is framed as the classic "military-man who means well" in the end, and goes undercover to trick others into thinking he is someone he isn't, just for getting closer to his target (Stitch). He makes the classic "I promised to protect people, this is how I do it" thing, but interestingly enough Tutu shuts that down very very quickly. She calls him out. She and their hanai are all included under the people Cobra is meant to protect. And that's what makes Cobra shift objectives, as that point made against him also means protecting the people is protecting Lilo too, who has snuck onto Jumba's ship. Not much else is given about anything governmental outside of the social services lady.

Said lady is very very positive about handing Lilo to the government, but making it super clear to offer Nani more "options". She's pushy and uncomfortable to be around though, so much so that Tutu mentions not liking her. This is the closest I could tell of anything pro-government.

As for the pro-colonialist claim, that is really complicated, like the rest of the movies adaption. Nani, an indigenous woman, leaving her homeland to pursue more opportunities while leaving her sister in the custody of someone else? Yeah. That is kinda what happens, but it is not the full story.

In the movie, it has moments showing how much Nani loves her home. They fly the Hawaiian flag on the front porch. Nani is in no way portrayed as being ashamed of her heritage, but she also doesn't embrace it as much as Lilo. She left the island even though she had opportunities on it, but having what the social worker claims to be a "goal-oriented mindset" she pursues the goal she already had been preparing for before the family situation. But this leans into the fact that many have made, this isn't the same Nani as the original movie. It just isn't.

Nani is given additions to her character that change her characterization entirely. She is written to seem younger and less determined than the original films portrayal, but retains her loving and strong-minded personality.

Pro-tourism?:

In the remake, Lilo continues to be uncomfortable for the tourists to be around, just less intentionally.

Her favorite spot on the beach happens to also be the same spot a lot of tourists that stay at a nearby resort happen to use, and we see Lilo not really caring for respecting the resort. The employees of the resort know her by name and call her off for making tourists uncomfortable. She sneaks in to use the hot tub, and doesn't pay any mind to the confused tourists. That's about all we get from Lilo being in on the tourism conversation.

For Nani it's partially there. As Nani looks for new jobs, majority are her checking with tourism attractions for work. In the original movie, she seems to focus more on local businesses to find work before looking into working for the attractions. This makes it seem like that all her options for work are inherently centered around supporting the tourism of Hawai'i and participating in giving tourists the idea of tropical paradise that they expect.

Miscellaneous confirmations:

While Jumba (Zach Galifianakis) is the villain in the end and never ends up as part of the found family, his dynamic is taken up by Tutu. He is honestly the most disappointing for the movie, having constant fat-joke-coded moments that have him getting stuck in places and into dumb situations.

Pleakley (Billy Magnussen) isn't cross dressing in this, instead being turned into a human form of himself. That being said, he dresses in more effeminate clothes that are pretty blink and you'll miss it, feeling like the classic queer-coded goofball. I'm pretty sure in one scene he was wearing a fishnet top over a croptop-

What decade is “Magazine Dreams,” a spiritually stifled drama about a bodybuilder driven to fits of chemically induced rage, set in? In the early moments of the film, written and directed by Elijah Bynum, everything about the fashion, the setting, and the subject suggests the late seventies. Standing in the gaping maw of a garage is an Adonis, the bodybuilder Killian Maddox (Jonathan Majors). He is Black, but he appears blue in the suburban nighttime; he is muscled not merely by biology but by his own intervention. He wears short shorts and ringer socks, his hairline uncarved. He flexes for us. Inside his modest ranch-style home, his grandfather, Paw Paw, sits at the kitchen table staring blankly as an oxygen tank assists his lungs. The house is claustrophobic, containing one body at peak physique and the other at near-deterioration. Killian has turned the house into something of a shrine to his labor of body modification, plastering his bedroom walls with bodybuilding posters. In the outside world, he is awkward. He’s got a menial job at a grocery store, where he strains to secure the attention of Jessie (Haley Bennett), a diminutive blond cashier, whom Killian believes will deliver him from his purgatory of maladaptation.

And then this seeming period piece about aggression and psychological projection pulls a trick. Killian logs on to a computer and lurks in YouTube comment sections with other bodybuilding obsessives. Later, he Googles “How do you make people like you?” The man is of our time, and not. Bynum borrows the style and psychic mood of postwar American pop cinema to win us over, to add another layer to his otherwise basic male-rage parable. But he can’t seem to get “Magazine Dreams” to say something original. The film is naked Scorsese propaganda—“The King of Comedy” as much as “Taxi Driver”—but that’s not the only reason it feels reductive. The movie tries so hard to put forth a sweeping treatise on the paradox of a Black bodybuilder, to be a study of Black masculinity. Killian is an object who wants to be a subject. He’s not just masculine—he’s animalesque, growling as he pumps his iron. But it is he who gets beaten up throughout the first two-thirds of the film. The steroids prevent him from performing sexually; he’s essentially a eunuch, who wants to be seen as a buck.

How should we react to this Black man, an embodiment of our prejudiced fears toward Black men? This figure, who writes letters of adulation to a white bodybuilder—literally named Brad—and who has no real Black family around him? (Paw Paw is experiencing mental decline, and Killian’s parents are dead.) The camera’s interest in Killian is a physiognomic interest. No one else in this movie is Black like Killian. Practicing his mandatory poses in the mirror, the chest bulging and the arms curled, the focal point is always his face, which mangles every expression, which cannot produce the pinup smile. Majors is working out his beliefs about aggression and loneliness and how they destroy his character, as he gnashes his blood-stained teeth.

His mouth is full of blood, at that point, because he has sustained a beating by a group of white men. (Killian had taken a bat to their storefront, believing they’d cheated Paw Paw during a painting job.) After the beating, a long pan stalks Killian, who manages to get in his car and drive to a bodybuilding competition. Bloodied and limping, to the horror of the judges, he attempts to hit his carrousel of poses, until he collapses, until the body gives out.

Bynum has made a physical film about an existential fear; as the film develops, we sense Richard Wright’s novel of racial alienation, “Native Son,” exacting an influence as strong as Scorsese’s. The film makes gestures to the systems of oppression that have driven Killian mad, but they are perfunctory. Deep in his descent, Killian comes across one of the white men who beat him; the man is having a meal at a diner with his family. Killian rants incoherently—“African! Black! Negro! Nigger!”—scaring the man’s children, becoming the stereotype. The thinking is that, for Black adult filmgoers, this Bigger Thomas fan fiction might be enough.

The film begins and ends with the physical presence of Majors, and the film fails because of it. “Magazine Dreams” is as obsessed with the spectacularity of the flesh as its character is; the film leans on a tragic backstory to explain why Killian can’t mix with the world. He is the product of pure patriarchal violence: his father killed his mother and then himself. Rattling off his biography to Jessie, who has agreed to go out with him, Killian gives a mannered, halting speech, the words vomited rather than spoken. (Jessie disappears halfway through the date.) At one point, when he feels wronged—and he always feels wronged—he almost whispers to his target, “I’m going to split your skull open and drink your brains like soup.” His cruelty is the cruelty of the naïf. As the film reaches its ending, the double entendre of the title reveals itself. Killian procures a gun arsenal. It’s Bynum’s way of exploring a kind of cross-racial contamination; Killian uses white men’s violence to facilitate a Black man’s vengeance. Or does he? “Magazine Dreams” won’t commit. Killian’s expression of violence, his expression of his existence, may have been real or may have been a fantasy cooked up in his addled head.

I remember the talk around this film before it premièred at Sundance, back in January, 2023. The script did not intrigue as much as the casting of Majors. He had, by the early twenty-tens, completed a rare and coveted ascension in Hollywood. Industry people and critics alike thought of Majors as a race-man savior, the sort of talent that stirs inchoate comparisons to Sidney Poitier. He had pedigree, having graduated from the Yale School of Drama, but he also had an earthbound, solemn air—he didn’t seem like a millennial cupcake actor. He started with indies. As the doe-eyed playwright in Joe Talbot’s “The Last Black Man in San Francisco,” Majors, in a tweed jacket and slouched button-downs, brought back the romanticism of the Black bohemian. The actor transitioned to mainstream movies elegantly, retaining a sense of dignity. In Spike Lee’s Vietnam War drama, “Da 5 Bloods,” Majors pulled focus from veteran actors, including Danny Glover and Delroy Lindo. He, too, instantly appealed to Black filmgoers; there wasn’t a fear that he would cross over and forget them.

He was a favorite son, and favorite sons aren’t easily abandoned. On March 25, 2023, Majors was arrested in New York City. He was charged with strangulation, assault, and the harassment of his then girlfriend, Grace Jabbari, who, at the time, was unknown to the public. Her finger was fractured, and she had a cut behind her left ear. By then, Majors was a mainstay in the trades, having appeared as charismatic villains in “Creed III” and the Marvel film “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.” The charges came as a real shock. Black women, in particular, had vaunted Majors for his emotional intelligence; the allegations of such vivid intimate-partner violence meant that he had taken advantage of their desire to protect him.

“Magazine Dreams,” which was slated to première that year, got dropped by its distributor, Searchlight Pictures. Majors’s management and his P.R. team also dropped him. Many of the film and television projects he had signed onto evaporated. Majors took some time away from interviews, but he did not remove himself from the spotlight. He instead entered a very public relationship with a Black actress, Meagan Good. Paparazzi captured the two holding hands, looking smitten. Good, a former child actress beloved for her canny roles, lent her reputation to the embattled man. Memorably, Majors once described her as his “Coretta,” as in Coretta Scott King. He likes inflating himself, casting himself as a martyr figure; during the domestic-violence trial, text messages between Jabbari and Majors show him admonishing Jabbari for not being a “Coretta” or a “Michelle,” as in Obama. Actors have special license to this mode of narcissism.

Did Majors’s public displays of so-called Black love, which occurred during the trial, prey on the public’s desire to protect one of their few Black male stars? The presence of Good, standing by her man, cast doubt on Jabbari, who is white, and helped create a counter-narrative: that a good Black man had been bamboozled by a conniving white woman. An atmosphere of conspiracy encircled Majors, Jabbari, and the trial, which occurred in late 2023. The release of CCTV surveillance footage from the night showed Jabbari running after Majors. Some pop-culture analysts took this to mean that Jabbari was the aggressor. At the same time, outlets diligently reported a troubling history of Majors’s volatility. Two of his former girlfriends spoke to the Times; one accused him of physical abuse, and the other of emotional abuse. Meanwhile, Majors continued his romance with Good, who provided a kind of dubious moral cover. Receiving the “Perseverance Award” at the Impact Awards (a show put on by a gossip blogger) last year, he got teary-eyed, praising Good for supporting him. “I’m imperfect,” he said. “I have shortcomings.”

In December, 2023, Majors was found guilty of two misdemeanor charges in the Jabbari case. (The two later settled a federal lawsuit.) Still, he maintained that “My hands have never struck a woman, ever.” Briarcliff Entertainment acquired the distribution rights to “Magazine Dreams,” which was released in late March, facilitating one of the more disturbing redemption tours in the wake of #MeToo reportage. A kind of eloquent self-flagellation colors his appearances and his interviews; he believes himself a victim of the genius that possesses him, that makes him vulnerable to a life of pain and suffering. He is the cover star of the March issue of The Hollywood Reporter, in which he details childhood abuse and his devotion to his punishing craft. The writer interviews Majors’s past girlfriends, but their testimonies are drowned out by the glamour of his supporters, who include Matthew McConaughey, Michael B. Jordan, and Whoopi Goldberg. “You don’t get to say sorry these days,” Goldberg lamented in reference to Majors’s plight. When did Majors apologize? Just days after the Hollywood Reporter profile was published, Rolling Stone produced audio of Majors admitting to assaulting Jabbari, back in 2022. “I’m ashamed I’ve ever . . . I’ve never [been] aggressive with a woman before,” he says in the recording. “I’ve never aggressed a woman—I aggressed you.”

The day after this clip was published, Majors and Good got married. The two pretend to a Black power-couple stance. His comeback tour has leaned on this, as well as the slippage between character and actor, to facilitate his rebrand. Majors recently appeared on Sherri Shepherd’s show, promoting “Magazine Dreams.” Shepherd was weeping, thanking him for his portrayal of a young Black man who is, as Majors put it, “mentally different”—like her own son, she adds. Shepard asks about the leaked recording. “God has a plan,” Major replies, “and sometimes you just throw your hands up.” Majors has a plan, too.
