In the process of some of the 4th years returning to NRC, Evan returned during book 5. In fact, he was announced to be the judge. Crowley told Vil that Evan would be judging the competition and that made Vil a little nervous. Evan is Vil's good friend and a highly successful singer, more than Vil and Neige combined.

After the Overblot fight and the dances being shown off, Evan has the ability to sway the vote either way and he says...

Announcer: What amazing performances from both teams! And now we turn to our judges!

Judge 1: RSA had a beautiful number! So light and cheerful! It made me want to dance with them!

Judge 2: NRC had passion behind them. The dancing and the singing combined made for a phenomenal showing.

Evan: ...

Announcer: Evan?

Evan: While RSA had a very light and cheerful song, I feel the need to remind myself that this is a team competition. While some of your team members might lack a strong enough voice, solely taking all of the vocals for oneself overshadows the other members. It made me want to hum along in the end. NRC, and I'm not being biased, showed off a better team composition. The dancing was uniform and done well, although there were a few hiccups. The singing on the other hand was absolutely beautiful, not only did it showcase all of the team, we even got to hear a solo from such a talented young man. Their song made me, and I'm sure many others, feel like we were absolutely beautiful.

Evan's harsh criticism ends up giving the win to NRC, but it was still a close call. He pulls Vil aside afterwards and tells him...

Evan: You overexerted yourself, Vil.

Vil: What do you mean?

Evan: Competing right after overblotting was very risky.

Vil: I-how did you...

Evan: I came into the stadium when everything was going down. Before I could help, that first year dealt the last blow to you.

Vil: ....

Evan: Grow from this victory, but be aware that one vote separated you from losing.

Vil: Was it bias that made you say that about Neige?

Evan: As I stated before, this was a team competition. Having them dance around you uncoordinated like that while you sing and stumble around in a hapless and cutesy manner, isn't good. Neige's cuteness has limits, it won't work all the time, and it's time people start seeing beyond the cute face on the screen. *Turns around* Besides, that only works if you're a pet, not a teenager.

Mom gave me a bucket hat. I decided I needed to do something with that.

I eyeballed everything so most wonkiness is due to that (the tiny heart refused all symmetry). Overall I'm quite pleased with the results.

The response to protests here in the US is disturbing despite not being surprising. It's also a connected but different issue from the genocide on Palestine.

The response shows how clearly the state sees student protest as a threat to the status quo and its imperial agenda with Israel. It's a dangerous inhibition of freedom to assemble and freedom of speech; but simultaneously it is secondary to the genocide. We have to strive to frame things in the way and maintain the connection of the genocide to the protests.

Media is trying to frame them as separate and to frame those protesting as uninformed whiners. Talking only about the police response here in the US and letting the massive death toll and torture in Palestine fall to secondary status is both a disservice to what the protesters are risking their lives for and a disservice to the suffering and death of Palestinians.
