🏝️ The Dragon of Lonely Island by Rebecca Rupp (1998)
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
“Suddenly they were inside the dragon’s story, seeing the world through someone else’s eyes.”
The Davis children- Hannah, Zachary, and Sarah Emily- are spending their summer at their Aunt Mehitabel’s home on Lonely Island, filled with stories as their aunt tells them to explore the aptly named Drake’s Hill. What adventures await?
I enjoyed every bit of this story, especially how each head of the three-headed dragon related to each kid. Fafnyr Goldenwings was such a cool character and I loved them. I also enjoyed how after each story told, the Davis children grew and learned from the subtle lessons.
Hannah became more responsible.
Zachary became more generous.
Sarah Emily became more brave.

Can I do an offshoot of a tag game? inspired by the TV show tag game: Rules: 10 (non-ancient) books for people to get to know you better, or that you just really like.
Got tagged by @sleeplessincarcosa it’s been so long since I’ve read a book lol but here we go. Gonna put it under a cut.
1. The Door Within Series was a fantasy trilogy I was introduced to in High School by a friend of mine that I really enjoyed.
2. Leviathan and Behemoth by Scott Westerfield were books I also read in High School and really enjoyed.  Sadly, I haven’t gotten my arse around to reading Goliath.  (it’s been so many years oh no) It’s an alternate history story about World War 1.
3. If You Come Softly by Jacqueline Woodson was a book I was assigned to read in English, but ended up loving.  The ending killed me and I had to leave the classroom because I was like, five chapters ahead of everyone else.  I didn’t want to start crying in front of the rest of the class and have people ask what was wrong.
4. Maximum Ride by James Patterson.  I feel like the series went on a bit too long for its own good, but I did genuinely love the first book.
5. Sail by James Patterson.  I’m not sure what it was about this book, as it’s not usually something I would read, but it was genuinely difficult to put down when I read it.
6. The Return of the Dragon by Rebecca Rupp.  I actually only read the second book, and wasn’t able to get myself a copy of the first.  But I really love this book and think about it often.
7. Chu Ju’s House by Gloria Whelan was a book I read in middle school at the suggestion of a teacher.  It’s stuck in my mind for most of my life.
8. Garden of the Purple Dragon by Carole Wilkinson was another book like The Return of the Dragon where I read the book without realizing it was a sequel.  Still loved it though, but I don’t remember if I ever went back to read the first book.
9. Eragon by Christopher Paolini is especially near and dear to me because it’s one of the few books I read with my mother and sibling.  Sitting in the living room, passing the book around each chapter, is probably one of my fondest childhood memories.
10. The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien.  Yeah, I know it might be cheating, but it’s less the book itself and more the memory of my teacher reading it to the class.  We all sat crowded around him, hanging on his every word as he read it to us.  It’s one of my favorite school memories and I think was the start of my love for fiction.
If you’d ask me to reccomend any of these books, it would definitely be the Leviathan series.  Especially if you’re into Alternative History books.  This series is so damn good and I feel like a horrible buffoon for not finishing it.
As for tagging, anyone who wants to do it I would love to hear about your favorite books :D

I was highly amused by these couple of paragraphs from "How Carrots Won the Trojan War" by Rebecca Rupp because cholera, if you aren't aware, is spread through contaminated water via fecal matter from infected people. So Sylvester Graham was unwittingly making the cholera epidemic worse, and it wasn't until 1854 that Dr. John Snow (no, not that one) noticed that cholera was being spread by a local waterpump in Soho.

I have been quite woeful in keeping up. Things are happening and I am glad that soon my life will start to return to normal (for me).
While I have been away, I managed to binge on almost all the books I brought from home - library books, via the Libby app, and the books that I own.
Here is what I have read since I got here:
Broken Places & Outer Spaces by Nnedi Okrafor
American Sirens: the Incredible Story of the Black Men who Became America's First Paramedics by Kevin Hazzard
The Messy Lives of Book People by Phaedra Patrick
Shadow and bone by Leigh Bardugo
Eating to Extinction: The World's Rarest Food and Why We Need to Save Them by Dan Saladino
Siege and Storm by Leigh Bardugo
The Ghost Sequences by A.C. Wise
Ruin and Rising by Leigh Bardugo
The Keeper of Lost Things by Ruth Hogan
Outer Order, Inner Calm: Declutter & Organize to Make More Room for Happiness by Gretchen Rubin
How Carrots Won the Trojan War: Curious (but True) Stories of Common Vegetables by Rebecca Rupp
I don't usually read this many books in about a month. But I was also sincerely bored.
And here's what I'm currently reading:
Say the Right Thing: How to Talk about Identity, Diversity and Justice by Kenji Yoshino and David Glasgow
Before Your Memory Fades by Toshikazu Kawaguchi
The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters
And I have a couple of romance books on deck as well:
Paris Daillencourt is about to Crumble by Alexis Hall
One Last Stop by Casey McQuiston
And I ordered three books which will hopefully be at my house when I return:
Romancing the Beat by Gwen Hayes
Libertarian Walks Into a Bear: The Utopian Plot to Liberate an American Town (and Some Bears) by Matthew Hongoltz-Hetling
The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows by John Koenig
Anyway, that's what I'm reading. If you feel like it, what are you reading? What would you recommend?

books for baby gays
gather round queer kiddos, for this book rec of stories featuring wlw of all designations, where happy things happen and bad things do not (nearly as much). I’ve aimed for happy endings and not too much tragedy or pain over the course of these stories, but (unfortunately) haven’t read all of them so do let me know if any mistakes slipped through.
This list is heavy on the fiction because I’m mainly aiming to provide some solace and warmth. Where there is some overlap between categories (e.g. coming out after uni and the what comes next section, or if you’re looking for escapism then the background-to-no romance section might also be useful) I have only included a book under one or the other, not duplicated.
All links direct through to the Storygraph, which includes reader-sourced content warnings on all titles so do make sure to check those out as well (and if you want you can follow me here). Now, have at it!

5. Top five formative books?
If we’re talking about books that inspired my writing, they are...
The Dragon of Lonely Island by Rebecca Rupp
Jurassic Park/ The Lost World by Michael Crichton
Firebringer by David Clement-Davies
White Fang by Jack London
Dragon’s Blood by Jane Yolen
These were books I read while growing up, and I like to think they have had a huge impact on the way I write.

Sacrifice, Chapter 20
PAIRING Wanda Maximoff & James Bucky Barnes
"Continui a sottovalutarmi"
"Non ti sto sottovalutando!"
"Allora facciamo così..."
"Come?"
"Beh...perché no?"
"Io?
"Okay...io entro in casa, siamo arrivati..."
A scuola?"

✨ Fun Story ✨
When I was in elementary school we had a big Scholastic Book Fair and with the little money my parents let me bring, I got a two-book box set of dragon books!
They were in a dark purple tin with a picture of a purple and black dragon perched on stone done by Ciruelo. Inside were two books: The Dragon of Lonely Island by Rebecca Rup and The Dragon Prince by Vicki Blum.
Later in life my tin and the books were accidentally donated to a different book fair and with time I forgot the names of them, before I had the chance to read them.
But now! After searching for years, I’ve found the books that were in this tin and I am so happy and filled with nostalgia. So, I’ve begun to read The Dragon of Lonely Island, and I can’t wait to read The Dragon Prince when I get my hands on it.

First, yes I am *quite* aware this is a kids book. But honestly, does anyone these days still believe that kids books can't be held to high standards? The Dragon of Lonely Island is a book that could have been so much more. Right off the bat, the writing style leaves something to be desired but the simplicity of it is nostalgic in a way. And there certainly was an attempt at diversity and trying to empower young girls. Still, there is no real action and I found myself bored. I can't imagine what that means about kids trying to read this. I do want to note that I acknowledge the attempt do framing is a clever one. But there needs to be a real story to frame your stories into. The children do absolutely nothing when they aren't talking to the dragon and what they do happen to do is only so that the story the dragon tells makes sense. Even the little puzzle box never lead to anything and that was the only thing that happened outside the cave. Essentially, this book should have just been a very small collection of short stories about one dragon and been left at that.
