I loved it! …And that’s pretty shocking for me since I’m not a huge b-ball fan. So yeah, I thought this was a great documentary…not only did I think this was a great come back story…but I also enjoyed seeing the personalities of the NBA players. These are some cool…

Didn’t have access to movies growing up so Player, Zack, and Ivy have been catching her up on the most popular ones

Sci-fi/fantasy junkie. Anything and everything that has aliens/magic and shitty practical effects from the 80’s/90’s he is all over

Has never said a single kind thing about the Star Wars franchise in his life. They are his favourite movies of all time

Personally I don't think it's about the which stars are playing whether they're young or older, I really it's about who can play their roles properly.

I just watched the Redeem Team documentary like 2 weeks ago, it really is who's going to put their egos away? Who's going to be in their role and play what they're meant to do?

Dwyane Wade came off the bench.

Dwight Howard literally was there and played defense, he didn't complain about getting post touches or wanted to be "the man" when he was obviously the man in Orlando at the time.

Kobe setting the tone when rammed through Pau Gasol in the very first game.

Who's going to walk into Team USA camp willing to learn and walk out better?

It's literally not a coincidence that literally almost everyone on that team head career years.

LeBron won his first MVP in '09 bringing that Cavs team to 66-16. Kobe and Lakers ran through the league going 65-17. Melo made his only CF with the Nuggets. Wade lead the league in scoring and making the playoffs with a subpar Heat team. Dwight and the Magic made the Finals.

Are the young guys these days willing to put in the work and walk out trying to be better?

That's just my opinion on it.

I don't think its that difficult for harry to redeem. All harries follow him because he is the cool thing to follow in music. So Hshq's job is easier. Just make harry seem cooler. And with his marketing-PR team, media boot licking, label money to always make his singles chart by next year Harry will be cool again. Also helps he has the best management who are fooling fans since 1D days he is a cupcake boy when he is the exact opposite.

On a superficial level, sure.

I meant on a more fundamental level in terms of actually living up to the ideas of him the fans have. Without the PR teams, without the payola.

But even with all that, I also see it being a struggle for him, because you can't make Harry more naturally charismatic, more articulate, smarter, capable of giving introspective answers, depth. He was at the premiere of his own movie and seemed utterly incapable of acting like he could hold a simple conversation about it. He's 28 years old.

The problem Harry has is that many people have cottoned on that it's all a costume and an act for him, if we dig deeper there's simply nothing there, so for him to change people's minds we'd have to really believe this is actually him and that there are fundamental depths to him. I just don't see how that's possible in a person who doesn't have them. If he changes stuff about his persona, we'll see through it now, because so much of him is a transparent act.

Harry's also getting older. The majority of his fans stan him because they think he's hot. So you take that away from him, what do you have? I think it's striking that his big gay movie wasn't enough for the fans while he was still in his cute boybander phase, they aren't even interested in that, and that's been their only obsession with him since forever. So what more is there?

I think in a few years we'll see some "documentary" thing about Harry that will try to portray him as the Nicest GuyTM, as this sweetheart, as this "funny" guy behind the scenes, and try to bait people back into loving like that, but it will only really work for his fans. Another aspect of him, is that his music and performances are nothing for people to keep coming back to. It's not like Beychella or anything, where we'd watch the behind the scenes to see how that was put together. His stuff only works if you actually fantasize about it, without it, there's no act there for him.

I love living in America where my only option for watching figure skating is Peacock TV. Which is behind a $4.99/mo paywall (at the very least — except y’all might still be able to get the .99¢ Black Friday deal if y’all don’t already use peacock.) Do NOT be fooled, this is not an ad — this is just advice for watching our favorite sport “legally” 🙄🖕🏻 I mean, vpns aren’t illegal so 🤷

This “service” (if you can really call it that) also doesn’t let me watch the content I specifically bought the service FOR at any other time than live — when the vast majority of major events are not within a time schedule fit for the average American viewer. The only way I have found around this is to have the player constantly open on my phone; if the event is completely over but I’m still watching it and my screen hasn’t closed, you can still continue watching it. But only in those exact conditions.

Like come on, the Pairs event in my time zone (CST) starts at 4:45am… 😴😵‍💫🥱

And you know how they treat this sport? Here are all of the different sports that you can easily search for and watch (nearly all with replays from the last year, if not older!)

I must be missing something, right? Surely if I do a reasonable search for what I am looking for, I can find it. Right?

Even if they don’t have replays, surely they’ll have some interviews, or maybe at least a Team USA skater will be an “Olympian in the Spotlight” or there will at the VERY least, be a video of Nathan Chen getting his gold or Hubbell/Donohue’s bronze maybe… (especially since they also have varied videos of all different sports with winners from all different countries…)

No. Do not bother wasting your time trying to find the answer out for yourself — the answer is a big fat no to all of the above.

Seriously, the only way to find any future or live skating events is to scroll to the “Sports” tab, and scroll down as far as it takes to reach this section.

To be completely honest, the only reason I originally subscribed to Peacock is because it was cheaper than a VPN. It is such a terrible streaming service, that the only reason I stay subscribed is because NBC pulled all of their shows that I watch off of other services.

The only redeemable thing I have to say about Peacock is that it managed to clear the low low low bar of being better than NBC Sports Gold. Which was somehow not worth the $4.99 I paid for 3 months — with unlimited replays, albeit in the summer after the figure skating season. But there is one constant comfort I look forward to every competition (or really, any time I use this app on any device 😊).

Top 10 Films of 2022

I feel exhausted by 2022 as a whole; but that doesn’t mean there haven’t been some outstanding movies this year and these ten are among them. Here are my personal favourite movies of the year.

10. Jackass Forever – The Jackass team return in their fourth and (presumably) final outing and boy do they go out with a bang! However, this time they bring on board new talent to pass the torch onto. This may not be my favourite Jackass, (the second one currently holds that distinction) but it is certainly the most wholesome out of the bunch. Plus, the gags and stunts are still creative, funny and disgusting as usual. The new cast also bring a charm and likeability all their own. My favourite being Compston Wilson a.k.a ‘Dark Shark’ he was awesome, and Ehren being the MVP of the old cast. If you enjoyed Jackass 4, do check out Jackass 4.5 on Netflix. It basically has more content, as well as some fascinating behind the scenes on some of the stunts. Out of all the movies on this list, this was the most nostalgic, innocent fun I have had at the cinema all year especially for a film that involves a crew member pogo sticking on Danger Ehren’s testicles.

9. Moonage Daydream – I will admit I have never known as much about the late-great David Bowie as my family have, so it was interesting watching this getting an idea of what made Bowie a unique human being/singer in the first place. This visually enticing documentary also chronicles Bowie’s career combining archival footage with Bowie’s songs. It just so happens that when the credits rolled and Bowie’s ‘Starman’ was playing, I was left with a big, dumb grin on my face. 

8. Top Gun: Maverick – Tom Cruise returns to one of his signature roles as Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell in an over 30-year-sequel that exceeds the original in almost every way. I am personally not a big fan of the 1980s flick, but I can see why it has its admirers. The sequel takes place over 30 years after the first ‘Top Gun’ and Maverick is now a test pilot but has been demoted by his peers and yet is brought back to the Top Gun academy to train new recruits. One of the recruits is Goose’s son ‘Rooster’ (played by Miles Teller), who resents Maverick for the accidental death of his father in the first film, so its up to Maverick to win not only the respect of his recruits, but also the son of his best friend. This film is a blast from start to finish. While it does pick up similar beats from the first film, it does so in an engaging and refreshing way. Tom Cruise is on top form; Miles Teller gives his best performance since ‘Whiplash’ and the new team are memorable and a lot of fun. I watched this in an IMAX screen and let me tell you when the aircraft takes off or in flight, I felt the weight and impact of being in the cockpit. As of typing this, it is the highest grossing film of 2022 and for good reason. It is a massive, appealing crowd-pleaser that is also a beautifully constructed action film in general.

7. Red Rocket – A black comedy whose main lead is a washed-out porn star; sign me up! In all seriousness, I would not expect a movie like this to come out in the Me-Too era (at least not with the kind of marketing it got). However, with that being said, I thought this was a refreshing take on this premise. Sean Baker is the director who previously directed the excellent ‘The Florida Project’ and ‘Tangerine’, and he brings his off-beat whimsy and charm to an outrageous premise to say the least. The main character is not 100 per cent redeemable and the film is aware of this, but it is first and foremost a comedy-drama with a commentary on the meaning of sexual morality. Simon Rex pulls off the flawed, desperate state of the main character perfectly and I got some genuine laughs and resonant moments out of the whole experience. 

6. The Northman – ‘The Lighthouse’ director Robert Eggers is at it again with ‘The Northman’; a film that had a notoriously difficult-than-usual production and was a box office failure upon release, however I couldn’t tell by watching it. This is a wonderfully dark revenge tale on Old Norse mythology and is among the best looking and meticulously crafted films of the entire year. As a side note, this movie has one of the best-looking volcanoes, I have ever seen on screen! 

5. Fire of Love – Speaking of volcanoes, ‘Fire of Love’ is a documentary about a couple of volcanologists who fall in love and follows their life and careers. I don’t have a lot to say about this one, I think it is a charming (and tragic) love story conveyed brilliantly through some spectacular footage along with some intricate detail on the structure and behaviour of volcanoes.  

4. Everything Everywhere All at Once – Like ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ this is another film that had me entranced throughout most of its 140-minute running time. I have never felt this giddy watching a film since ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’. Michelle Yoah plays a Chinese American mother named Evelyn who emigrated to the United States and works in a laundromat. Things do not go well with Evelyn and his family as they have a number of problems ranging from divorce, to debt, to maintaining a relationship with her daughter. However, this all flips on her head when she is greeted by an alternate version of her husband from the multiverse, and he warns her of a danger that threatens the multiverse. This movie is weird, crazy, funny, heart-wrenching, heart-warming and above all imaginative. Between this and ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’, both films never lose the wonder and craziness of the concept of the multiverse, which I feel ‘Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness’ failed to capture. The film can be unfocused and long-winded at times but I can let this slide because of its imagination and themes. After all, for better or for worse, the film’s title says it all about what may be in store for you!

3. Aftersun – The most recent film I saw this year, Charlotte Wells’ directorial and written debut ‘Aftersun’ has been getting praise across the board and it is not at all difficult to see why. Calum (played by Paul Mescal) and his 11-year-old daughter Sophie (played by Frankie Corio) take a holiday to Turkey, as Sophie discovers more about her father. Both father and daughter give magnetic performances, particularly the daughter who makes her acting debut and was chosen out of 800 other candidates, so that is impressive. Outside of that, the cinematography is gorgeous, the transitions are intricately well-handled and as father-daughter bonding movies go, it is certainly amongst the best that I have seen.

2. The Banshees of Inisherin – Brendan Gleason, Colin Farrell and Martin McDonagh reunite after ‘In Bruges’ in a dramedy about once best friends who find their relationship strained when one decides to end their friendship. I always find Martin McDonagh fascinating as each film he makes is generally better than the last. This is definitely his best work. Brendan Gleason and Colin Farrell give my favourite performances of the entire year and every aspect of the filmmaking is near perfect. My only nit-pick would be what Adam from YMS pointed out about the CGI fire. Outside of that, I laughed, I cried, I was frustrated (in the way the film intended), I could listen to Carter Burwell’s score all the time until the day I die, all in all I had a fulfilling experience with this. 

1. The Worst Person in The World – While ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’ may be my most fulfilling experience of the year, I feel ‘The Worst Person in the World’ is the best overall package this year, hands down. While it was released internationally in 2021, the UK did not get a release until early 2022, so I’m counting this as a 2022 release. This film is based in Oslo and is the final part of what is called ‘Joachim Trier’s Oslo Trilogy’, the first being ‘Reprise’ in 2006 and ‘Oslo, August 31st’ in 2011. I have not seen any of these films but I am in dire need to check them out because I adore this film. I love the performances, cinematography, writing, direction and editing. I feel it is kind of sacrilege that the ‘Best Original Screenplay’ Oscar that year went to Kenneth Branagh’s ‘Belfast’ instead of this. This film deserves more love and attention, and I cannot recommend it enough.

Wow. I just finished #TheRedeemTeam on @netflix. This has to be one of the best basketball documentaries ever. Here is my review. Basketball is a sport that was created in America. When it came to the #Olympics, the United States was always assumed to just win. America went through a stretch where we lost out on the Gold and the US had to take things seriously. There is nobody that takes things more seriously than @kobebryant. He joined the Redeem Team and this is the story of how his impact pushed this team of great individual players into becoming a great team that helped put the United States back on top. #KobeBryant had an impact on so many players that will most likely never be matched. This is another great celebration of his life and his drive for greatness.
