Baela Targaryen
Older teen Baela. Lots of teal, lots of gold, a few pearl-drops... all the makings of a tomboy Targaryen/Velayron. I also cropped her hair even shorter, because it was fun. And in reading the SOIAF wiki her backstory-futurestory was giving me a lot of... pirate vibes? It's hard to explain but she has a great rebel teen era and that sort of personal style lends so much character and fun to a costume design.

Elaboration on my Tully/Targaryen dress from this piece! This was supposed to be a quick warmup but the embroidery wound up taking way longer than I expected. Details on the bodice below :)

Rhaenyra deserved a Black Dress moment so I propose a scene at Viserys and Alicent’s wedding where she arrives late in one of her mother’s old gowns from the Vale, which she dyed black and red. Her dramatic entrance and rejection of her father’s marriage widens the rift between her and Alicent. Viserys obviously recognizes it as well so it is as if he is seeing Aemma on his wedding day, plaguing his guilty mind further. For Rhaenyra, it is an act of defiance and act of mourning.

HOTD opening Sigil redesigns: Baela, rhaena (after morning hatches), laena, Rhaenys, daemon, rhaenyra
We haven’t seen officially seen Rhaenys yet but this is my vision. I know they considered dark sister for daemon, and they should’ve gone with it. I did the tiara of the amethyst empress for Rhaenyra since her story and the dance is similar to the amethyst empress and the blood betrayal.
Edit: I mixed up the amethyst empress and the empress of leng in terms of whose tiara daemon gave rhaenyra 😅 but I stand by it we could’ve had it be an amethyst empress reference for her personal opening sigil

Hi! I love your redesigns for ASOIAF houses and the snippets of their house’s fashion history. I wrote a ton of fashion history papers in college so it warms my heart with your posts. 💚💛💚 (green hearts for Meera Reed)
What do you think House Velaryon would dress like? They have such an interesting history that it’s hard for me, personally, to imagine it. My first thought was Vikings because they’re sea faring like the Greyjoys but it wouldn’t match too much because they’re a political powerhouse with dragons and members in the Royal family… at least in the HOTD era. In GOT they’re much smaller and less powerful naval house under Stannis who obviously isn’t as flashy as the Targs or even his brothers. The fashion would’ve changed drastically throughout their history, especially considering the two very different houses their power has been tied to so I was wondering what your take would be on their different statuses being reflected in their clothes.
This got very long lol I love your energy with the fashion history side of the fandom so I don’t mind if it takes a while to answer! Great things take time after all💚
Hey this is such a great question!! I think I’ll do like a “timeline” of fashion for this one instead of one period on time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okay so they’re said to have arrived even earlier than the targs, so their earliest fashions would be older remnants of Valyria. Fairly simple clothing, since I don’t think they were very established in Valyria, but as they made their wealth, their fashion became more complex with added jewelry and finer materials, but they still hung on to their traditions for a while. Simple one piece dresses or tunics and sun protecting/religious headwear that got more complex over time
Tumblr media Tumblr media
An unspecified amount of time later, when the Targs arrive, the Velaryons have grown nice and wealthy off of the constant wars on the mainland. At this point they’re still cleaning to tradition, but they’re also letting Westerosi influences come in. Leather jerkins and wool cloaks and velvet jackets etc etc. And at this point they’re starting to evolve into a sea faring family too so: cotton clothing that’s easy to move around in on ships, turbans/head wraps to keep hair out of their face on Driftmark and while at sea, rare jewels and metals found on expeditions.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
By the time of the dance they’ve probably fully conformed to Westerosi fashions. And they’re rich enough to fully indulge in it too. Big frills and ruffles, wide skirts, embroidered clothing, jeweled headdresses, studded leather jerkins, carefully crafted doublets, the whole nine yards. I feel that since this is the peak of the Targaryen era it’s also the peak of the Velaryon era, since they’re so closely connected
Tumblr media Tumblr media
By the time of Aerys II, I think that their peak has definitely passed, and the Velaryons are slowly falling from grace, though it isn’t as extreme or as fast as the targs. Their clothes are older and more worn, beginning to become mostly for practicality. Skirts are flatter, leather has become cracked, people are wearing the clothes of their mother and father. It’s not immediate, but there’s definitely a slow decline in quality as the house becomes less and less important to Westeros
Tumblr media Tumblr media
By the late 290’s, I think the Velaryons are all but faded into obscurity. They have their noble name, but that’s really it. They were fading already by the end of the Targs, so the absolute shitshow Robert launches the country in cant really be good for them, or the fact that Mr. Stingy Stannis is their new liege lord. When Aurane comes to power, they’re essentially just dressing like landed knights. Their clothes are clean and fit well and don’t have holes…but that’s about it.

New Ideas for HOTD Alicent Fashion pt.2
So technically the last one I did for Alicent was apart of a Rhaenyra one, but for continuity sake this is my second outfit redesign for a younger Queen Alicent Hightower.
The dress in question we’re changing is one that will be changed in both scenes it’s worn. One will be a new dress entirely but the other will be just mentally recreating it to look more like the concept art.
The scenes are the dismissal of her father as Hand & The confrontation between she and Rhaenyra about the rumor that had her father dismissed:
Tumblr media
I actually love this❤️❤️❤️ it’s just missing a little something, so when comparing these two pics:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you notice these look exactly the same, except the black is darker, perhaps a velvet, the gold embroidery is more in the form of a design and brighter. The necklace is also more regal looking, bigger than the ones we saw her wear in her girlhood as a noble Lady. Those are the things they should’ve kept for the design of the dress in this scene, she’d look more like an actual Targaryen royal of the time. No offense but the dress that made the cut is kinda bland in tone.
The hair as well, she went for a jeweled hairnet to back to her girlhood hairstyles, precisely why I wish they would’ve kept the braided jeweled crown. It makes her seem more mature (despite her not being but jewelry can be a mask just as much as makeup sometimes) and more royal. She could even still keep it in this half held up hairdo just with the jeweled braided crown/twist added into it:
Tumblr media
And the last thing about it the to want to say, the cape would’ve been awesome to see and it would’ve fit the scene. It was raining and she had a man carrying an umbrella for her, I think she’d have that cool ass cape too. Again makes her look more regal, more queen like, more mature.
The next time she wears it that I’d like to change, when she confronted Rhaenyra. A tense scene.
However at this point in time is when she is the most conflicted between her marriage to her husband and her “duty” to her house. I feel she’d reflect that in a representation of both houses. More so red, almost as if adding green was an afterthought, bc I rather think it would be a last minute decision for Alicent to add a green sash or piece of fabric to her usually Targaryen adoption in appearance. A way to feel close to her father by wearing the colors of the house she was born from (just like I headcanon she wore blue as a child to feel close to her mother; Helena Cuy, look it up where I go on a whole rant).
That in mind, imagine something similar to this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The green being held in place at her neck, Targaryen dragon scales but in gold (perhaps a subtle nod toward Sunfyre/Aegon), it comes to wrap around her waist like a belt, tied at one side the remainder of the green fabric falls free on her left side of her hips down side by side the red dress. Also from the neckline, a half cape of green coming to cover her right side, thin gold chains reaching out from the neckline to hide beneath the half cape.
The red dress underneath would suit the summer climate/warmer climate of the time in the Red Keep, it’s just the right shade of Targaryen red, not to mention the red dress isn’t what really makes the dress but really what is meant to catch ur eye is that she’s wearing green for the first time in a long time. It meant to be hinting at her internal battles. Ofc her cleavage wouldn’t be exposed as depicted so it’s have a higher neckline, perhaps some simple gold and/or black embroidery to enhance it a bit.
Her hair would be something else to consider, thinking back to how we want it to be more mature and queen like. So perhaps a head peace or a jeweled net?
A mixture of these two would suffice:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The first picture is my favorite one and the main inspo for how I’d have done her hair, the pearls, the way her hair is twisted at the top with her bun being kept nice and beautiful in a net. The only thing I’d add from the second photo is the gold lace around the edges of the net, as well as the braid surrounding that as a whole. I’d also take the bands and add them loosely to the bottom part of her hair left down.
As for jewelry, they could’ve taken inspo from actual royal jewels. Something like this for Alicent:
Tumblr media
Like I said the look starting originally as her traditional Targaryen Queen attire, with her Hightower symbolism added as an afterthought. Some small pearls could be added between diamond to go more with the pearls in her hair (although I think I might see some pearls in there but I might be dumb).
As for the earrings they could be something like this:
Tumblr media
Again incorporating pearls into them or straight up replacing the diamonds entirely.
It’s just Queenly. It’s appeasing to the eyes. And it’s what I expect people to design royal fashion as to look like in period/historical dramas when you’ve proven yourself not concerned with accuracy or if it is a style fantasy gown.

What would you like to see most in the HOTD remakes?
Fixing the voice acting is the major aspect I’m looking forward to. The characters deserve voice acting that lets you take them a bit more seriously. Maybe if enough people enjoy it the cast could voice their respective characters in upcoming HoTD games (though considering Forever Entertainment is making the remakes and Sega makes the main series idk if that’s possible in terms of business stuff). From what little footage we have the voice acting is still cheesy but it definitely seems to be of decent quality, and I hope it turns out good for both games.
I’m honestly very interested to see what the creatures will look like with more advanced visuals, and if any of them will get redesigned
Also, while it’s less about what’s in the game itself, I hope this remake introduces more people to the series and lets its following grow. I’d like to see more fan creations and discussions, and some new faces in the community would allow that to happen.

Sonic! He Can Really Move
So, the Sonic movie has turned out to be rather decent. Not surprising, given that the buzz way back before the redesign was that the plot was good, it was just the visuals that needed divine intervention, but having seen it myself and being such a huge Sonic fan that I myself have a dream of pitching a Sonic television program one day, I had to see it for myself... and I was not disappointed. I’ll try to keep them down, but this is a reaction/review and will have the occasional spoiler. Keep warned.
Tumblr media
First and foremost, the basic plot is very ubiquitous Hollywood cliche. You know the one: rather than adapt the actual story of an animated/video game character, the studio puts in a plot where said character is forced into the “real world” and has to have an adventure with a mundane everyman, wackily upending their lives. On a bare bones level, there’s not much new about the plot: if you’ve seen Smurfs 1, you’ll probably know what the progression is going to be. However, whereas most other versions of this plot are evidently rooted in a lack of respect or faith for the source material beyond brand recognition, the opposite could not be more true for this movie. For one, there is an actually well constructed reason for this plot to be taking place (in fact, if not for a couple things I’ll mention later and - most notably - the way the plot ends, I could even buy some of this story actually having taken place in the games’ backstory, and given that SEGA is pushing the “separate human and animal world” concept for Sonic with dubious claim that they’ve been doing it all along, it’s possible - in fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if this plot was actually SEGA’s idea), but even that works primarily because of the second point here: that the movie is still from Sonic’s perspective - still Sonic’s story - all the way through, which is unique for this setup. The human buddy has a plot, a pretty engaging if textbook one, but it’s a subplot made to better characterize him. His plot is still largely filtered through Sonic’s perspective (and Sonic’s through his, to some extent), making the whole kind come of as a bit different than usual - especially since Sonic is so endearing.
I’ve seen him described as “obnoxious, but in the endearing way that a child can be,” which is pretty accurate. He’s definitely written as younger than usual, still getting used to himself and the world, treating everything with a wide eyed ignorance but a strong sense of idealism that makes him fun to watch no matter how cocky he is. Something especially that hit me is the way he views the world: despite my use of “mundane” earlier to describe the human world here, something I despise about a lot of media today is the narrative that if you’re a regular person, you’re a nobody who exists to get out of the way of the somebodies of the world - that normalcy is the anathema to the exceptional. It’s something I’ve come to dislike about The Rise of Skywalker more and more as I think about it, and it’s pretty much everywhere in fiction. But not here. You’d expect an adaptation of Sonic to be arrogant and disdainful of others - he’s not like that in the games at all, but adaptations love to change him into that kind of character. But here? Sonic loves being able to do anything. He loves doing the cool stuff, he loves doing the mundane stuff. He treats sitting on a barstool or sitting around eating donuts with the same excitement as riding a motorcycle, and is portrayed as someone enjoying life for the first time.
He reminds me a lot of characters like Wander or Snoopy, who symbolize how true freedom is the ability to experience everything you can and delight in all of it, even if it’s something other people would dismiss as beneath them. And this ideology was a very good idea: it’s one of the main things that makes Sonic so lovable here. Without it, he may well have come off as far more annoying.
Carrey is fantastic as Eggman / Robotnik (and yes, he is referred to as both). They nail the ‘silly, but not at all harmless or unthreatening” angle that makes games Eggman such a great villain - he’s highly dangerous and also a delight to watch. Plus, ideology wise, he is the opposite of what I’ve just described: he considers himself above normal people, openly disdains people who just try to live their lives and succeed on their own, and believes the world belongs to him because he’s exceptional. He’s a perfect contrast to Sonic, and he only gets more and more awesome as the movie goes on. My favorite shot in the whole film is a bit towards the end where he unveils an entire weapon system on Sonic, and the shot goes red as lights and klaxons fire up, with just his evil grin in the center. I can’t resist a good villain shot.
Other stuff. Sonic is fast. Incredibly so. This isn’t the games’ momentum based Sonic who has to build up to top speed, has relatively normal reaction times and only goes a couple hundred miles per hour once he gets there. This Sonic is more akin to Fox’s version of Quicksilver, or the Flash: able to think faster than a drop of water can hit the ground, and move accordingly. This was clearly put in for humor and setpieces, but... it’s not the best idea imo, as super-buffing a character for a gag tends to. It kind of undercuts the idea that Sonic is ever in danger, since in the action scenes he’s always running slower than we’ve seen him go in other scenes. And he’s already pretty strong in comparison anyway: this Sonic has electric charge powers that give him a super mode capable of seriously incredible damage, with nary a Chaos Emerald in sight. At this point, I’m half expecting him to be revealed has a Captain Marvel-esque “absorbed an Emerald’s power” backstory in the sequel.
And yes, I’m pretty sure there’s going to be a sequel. This movie has two - count ‘em - two obvious sequel hooks, and is making bank. SEGA rolled out the mat for this - there’s even a SEGA specific movie studio intro, which gives off the impression they’ll be doing a lot more adapting in the future (how about a decent HOTD movie?).
And TBH, I wouldn’t mind at all. There’s a lot to be unexplored. Sonic’s world is very empty thus far - the movie canonizes certain areas as having been in other regions (Green Hills, as apposed to Green Hill, in human world for example - whether the name is an intentional nod to the Game Gear version or just a coincidental twist is unknown. Mushroom Hill, or something similar, is meanwhile in a completely different region), plus we get blips of echidnas and maybe even myth arcs, plus a certain character that only pops up in the Stinger.
There’s a lot to look forward to, and as a Sonic fan I’m pretty here for it. Here’s hoping it can improve on what it’s done so far and be even better in the inevitable #2. But as for me: recommended.

Rhaenyra is officially Heir
I almost was not going to redesign Rhaenyra's official Heir ceremony costume from the show, because I kind of like that one. If the cloak fabric didn’t wrinkle so under its own weight it might have been perfect.
While redesigning it I decided the thing to do was to push the Byzantine inspiration even farther. The shape, the mantle, and the crown with strings of pearls. Before you ask: yes, this took a solid amount of time to do with all those details in there. I wanted to use richer golds, loads more gems, and huge amounts of expensive fabric for this very formal, very important occasion. The crown even has a little dragon on it.

Last up in the tourney dress redesigns: Rhaenys! The original is strongly “meh” for me, so I took the aspects I liked and fleshed them out more. In general I wanted this dress to feel more mature while still having a similarity to Rhaenyra’s. Also added puffy sleeves because there should be more puffy sleeves in hotd and that is a hill I’m willing to die on. Details below!

Redesigning Rhaenyra’s Costumes
Let’s be honest, her costumes were not giving what needed to be gave. I’m sure Covid impacted the fabrics that were available and how a thorough a job they are able to do fittings but the end result still wasn’t great. However, I did enjoy the ahistorical nature of it in that, much like GOT, you could not find direct historical inspiration for all the outfits. I tried to keep that in mind when I drew Rhaenerya’s outfits while also trying to keep it similar to her costumes in the show because I’m not redesigning ALL her dresses. I might redesign other dresses in the future, along with Rhaena and Baela.
1.Red Tourney- Great idea, terrible execution. it is so ill fitting with no structure whatsoever and it makes her look so frumpy. Which I know is not the intent because of her flared collar. Honestly, I’m not the biggest fan of the collar because it seems a little too advanced for the time period in the ASOIAF universe and Cersei would have certainly had an Elizabethan collar while queen. However, it is probably the most defining piece of the outfit so I had to include it. I also hope that it comes back in future appearances otherwise it would be such a bizarre design choice. Anyway, for my redesign I structured the collar a bit more, making it resemble a dragon wing. She has a blue-purple broach to represent her mother. The whole tourney is being thrown in her honor but Rhaenyra is really the only one thinking about Aemma. In a similar vein, Rhaenyra’s sleeves resemble armor with blue gems in reference to Aemma’s quote about a woman’s battle ground being the birthing bed.
2.Yellow Dress- This dress is inspired by the Byzantine period and by Rhaenys’s gowns. A lot of people on the show seem to favor wide necklines or off the shoulder dresses so I simply adorned hers with gemstones. Embroidery and sewn gems are also added because her dress was too plain and I think they tried to make up for it with shiny fabric. Plus all the men around her are obsessed with Old Valyria which I visualize as the Byzantine period and Ancient Rome so it makes sense she would incorporate Valyrian styles into her dresses. It is of course modernized with a medieval silhouette as she is expected to set the trends at King’s Landing. Matching the jewels is a simple gold circlet because Rhaenyra needs some casual crowns to wear around the house.
3.The Rose Gold Dress- Again, the idea was there but the execution wasn’t. This is the most medieval inspired of the dresses I redesigned for her. Since this is the scene where her and Alicent make up, she looks probably the softest we’ve seen her with light pink and a fabric belt. The fabric belt is inspired by Byzantine clothing. The bright red gems, tiara, the dragon scale dress and dragons scale lace under her rose gold dress do indicate that their animosity isn’t over but it is tempered for now. They simply miss each other that much. I emphasized the amount of gold she wears to contrast her older self who will wear more silver because it is a variation of black. I know she wears gold to match her dragon but she can’t wear black and gold without looking like a Baratheon I’m afraid.
4.Meeting in a Maternity Gown- I liked the original dress except for the front lacing and the white fabric. I don’t know why they made her wear white so much. I know they needed a pale fabric to show her lactating in this scene (🙄) so I kept it a pale gray since it’s still aligning herself with Team Black. In my redesign she’s wearing pale gray in softer fabric as she is probably seeking something comfortable post giving birth but it’s still regal enough to stand toe to toe with Alicent. She’s also wearing a variation of a French hood because that is what she wore at her coronation and she’s trying to maintain the idea of herself as heir. Instead of a front lace corset detail- which I assume was for breast feeding purposes because why would someone either handmaidens wear something that needed tying in the front?- I gave her a robe and belt. She’s aware of the rumors about her sons so she wears some of Laenor’s house colors to dissuade those rumors. Sort of like, “See how happy we are? I’m wearing his favorite color!” The gray and blue are House Strong colors though so she is showing her love for him as well. But both are so overwhelmed by her house colors, it barely registers. Rightfully so as she is representing herself during the council meeting. I added more dragon emblems because I loved her dress in the teaser trailer for season 2.

green kids redesign 2/4!
while i loved phia saban’s performance in hotd, i wish the showrunners hadn’t ignored the fact that helaena is fat in the books. i kept her crown-braid hairstyle, but i was going for a more book-inspired design. her dress is based off one from bbc musketeers which, while it’s dreadful as a 1640s dress, incorporates the greens’ colour and a naturey twist.
(you can see aemond here. these designs are also influenced by/are the reference points i’m using for my series, a yellow dress, which is an au in which the greens manage to win the dance, at a cost)

The Wedding of Rhaenyra and Daemon
I need all the love for this one because I super-focused on it for over half a day without pause. What sleep schedule? I had the unstoppable urge to draw these two menaces. If you want me to make more things like this the endorphin rush of positive feedback will need to be stellar XD. Second bird with this stone is that I actually drew an unprompted man for the HotD series. Can’t be getting too predictable with only pretty ladies.
For this redesign I wanted to reference and build off of Rhaenyra's Heir outfit. So while it's not exactly the same they should feel like they are pulling more from the "ancient Valyerian" (Byzantine-esque) fashion than the styles that Alicent is currently wearing in court. Extra points if you an spot the references to Empress Theodora (again + her Emperor). Oh and because I make the rules in these redesigns: Corlys is Black and Rhaenyra isn't Hollywood sized. I can pull from the books and the show as I please! So I wanted to include her long single plait (styled after a previous Queen) and her generous curves in these post-time jump illustrations.
