Baela Targaryen
Older teen Baela. Lots of teal, lots of gold, a few pearl-drops... all the makings of a tomboy Targaryen/Velayron. I also cropped her hair even shorter, because it was fun. And in reading the SOIAF wiki her backstory-futurestory was giving me a lot of... pirate vibes? It's hard to explain but she has a great rebel teen era and that sort of personal style lends so much character and fun to a costume design.

Asoiaf - fashion of the courts throughout the ages of the Targaryen Dynasty, headcanons.
1) Under Aegon I + Aenys & Maegor : mainly greek/roman & bizantine inspiration for clothing, which correspond respectively to classical Valyrian clothing (greek being the older style, roman the more recent) and to neo-Valyrian clothing, fashion that appeared after the fall of Valyria (the bizantine empire being the "successor" or outright continuation of the eastern roman empire). Marginal use of southern Westerosi fashion, meaning western middle ages (up to beginning of renaissance) type of clothing.
+ in rare instances they still wore a more ancient style of Valyrian clothing inspired by ancient Egyptian fashion.
Bizantine styles :
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2) Under Jaehaerys I : bizantine type clothing become slowly associated to ceremonies and used less (they're very ostentatious & not to Alysanne's prefered taste) all the while the Targaryen style takes in more and more westerosi (especially Andal) influences. It's a time of reconciliation with the faith & of deeper attempts at adapting to Westerosi customs. Also a time when the family opens itself more to non-valyrian families, through marriage or attempts at marriage with families like the Arryns & the Manderlys. Greek and roman styles remain a norm though.
👇greek & roman styles examples.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
3) Under Viserys I : a bit of a neo-Valyrian (bizantine) revival as the king & the court flaunt the wealth & prosperity of the realm at the time. The nobility at large also begins to wear more classical & neo-Valyrian styles. Princess Rhaenyra is especially fond of this lavish style. But queen Alicent Hightower is more fond of south Westerosi clothing, less lavish, as well as more conservative than the greek & roman styles still widely used, and influences part of the court to chose that style over the other deliberately. The choice of a style of clothing could subtly indicate either black or green sympathies (although Alicent's heirs present at court would still wear Valyrian style clothing/hairstyles to affirm their Valyrian heritage).
Southern Westerosi types of clothes :
Tumblr media Tumblr media
4) Under Aegon III, Viserys II & their sons Daeron I, Baelor I and Aegon IV : general slip towards Westerosi fashion, with some shifts & bumps along the road. Daeron I with his desire to finish what his conqueror ancestors started & appeal to a more prosperous past was more favorable to Valyrian roman/greek traditions of style but the influence of Valyrian ladies like Rhaena of Pentos, Queen Daenaera Velaryon, Rhaena daughter of Aegon III, Elaena Targaryen, Naerys Targaryen who for most of them dressed in westerosi style and were more or less pious faith followers skewed the game, despite outliers like Baela & Daena. There was as well the influence of Baelor Targaryen of course. So the fashion would be more conservative and somewhat less ostentatious (compared to previously) in general.
4.5) Under Aegon IV in particular : The modest wardrobe of Naerys especially would incite her admirers & the followers of her son Daeron to wear simpler more conservative westerosi fashion, while those trying to please Aegon IV (especially by presenting their daughters) and who saw Daemon Blackfyre as more promising than Daeron would skew towards less conservative fashion with greek/roman influences to evoke the Targaryen golden ages (and to be more alluring to the king). Naerys' influence would lead a fashion of hair covering headwear, which would continue into Daeron II's reign.
Examples :
Tumblr media Tumblr media
5) Under Daeron II the good : following the trend set above, continues a move towards Westerosi type of clothing over traditional or neo-Valyrian styles. But through Dornish alliances and an established presence at court, introduction of Dornish styles (inspired by morrocan, algerian, possibly turkish medieval/renaissance styles) which would bring back some ostentatiousness & ease the conservatism of the clothes.
Dornish clothing ideas :
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That'll be all for now, I just needed that vent ; but later kings' courts continued down that part for sure, which traditional or neo-Valyrians style clothing becoming relatively uncommon for court members to wear, even Targaryen royalty, except in the cases of particular & excentric individuals as different as Aerion Brightflame & Rhaegar Targaryen.

The eldest daughter of Aenys and Alyssa was a shy, dreamy child, who seemed to be more comfortable with animals than other children. As a little girl, she often hid behind her mother’s skirt or clung to her father’s leg in the presence of strangers...but she loved to feed the castle cats, and always had a puppy or two in the bed. Though her mother provided her with a succession of suitable companions, the daughters of lords great and small, Rhaena never seemed to warm to any of them, preferring the company of a book.

The Ladies of Team Green
Queen Alicent Hightower and her daughter, Princess Helaena Targaryen
Details Below
Please be kind, I’m still learning how to draw on an iPad.
I was a little disappointed with the costuming on HOTD, Alicent’s costuming and a few of Rhaenerya’s dresses were done the best but even then (and I mean no disrespect to the costume designers, I can’t sew something better) some of them felt discombobulated and the quality felt like a poor Halloween costume. Personally, I think there should be more markers of their higher status such as jewelry and embroidery and the like.
Alicent and Helaena are inspired by Tudor fashion, but the shape of their silhouettes leans more into 1880s Victorian fashion.
Alicent’s first outfit is inspired by Crimson Peak’s costuming as the puff sleeve robe is inspired by the Victorian wrapper dress/ night gown. The dress’s highly stylized jewels and embroidery are lifted from Byzantium fashion. Her hair is inspired by Padme Amidala’s hair in the meadow scene because I think hairnet styles are super underrated. Her second gown is more directly Victorian in shape but with enough Tudor accessories and embroidery to make it appear more medieval. The belt in particular is inspired by Tudor fashion, which I believe was also inspired by the rosary and I know Alicent would like the option to pray on the go. I gave her high necklines with necklaces over it because I think, in a way, she feels confined in her status as a woman and a Royal.
Helaena is more simple with her outfits compared to her mother. She has a Victorian silhouette because I think her mother does have a degree of power but she looks more Tudor like than her mother. Her clothes are more muted than Alicent as she does not want to draw too much attention to herself but her patterns and accessories do not make her fade to the background. The sleeves in the first pic are in reference to Renaissance fashion where ladies were able to adjust their sleeves and redesign them. I think Helaena is autistic and would enjoy the option to change how she feels in her sleeves from time to time. She has a belt in both pics so she can have something to fidget with. I’d like to think Alicent gave her long belts to pick at, so she wouldn’t resort to picking at her nails or digging into her fists like she had once done. I wish I put her in more red or pink but paired with the green and white, she would’ve looked too much like a Christmas card. However her fishnet design is maroon, almost brown to reference her house colors and to resemble dragon scales. The pale green dragons on either side of her bodice are also a shout out to her house because I enjoy more embroidery in period drama fantasies. Her crown in the second pic is more ‘masculine’ than I think she would go for but it is a reference to Alicent and Rhaenerya’s matching rings from when they were friends because I think Alicent subconsciously sees a bit of Rhaenerya. Helaena wears a silver chain across her chest with a pendant/pin of the Seven, another one of Alicent’s choices.
I think I’ll do the ladies of Team Black next because I adore Rhaena and Baela but I’m having a harder time thinking about what kind of dresses they would wear. Definitely Byzantium inspired to put them all in the same time period as team Green but other than that I am stumped so please tell me if you have any ideas!

In F&B are their similarities between The Targaryens and Byzantine History? I know the dance with dragons/anchary is British inspired but am I wrong to think there are Byzantine influences with targs? I’ve only ever seen a reference of Byzantine with Lannister’s
Not really. It actually makes sense for the Targaryens to not borrow from Byzantine stylings - that's more Volantis's schtick. Byzantium carried itself as the new Rome, referred to it's people as Romans. Aegon Targaryen explicitly rejected Valyrian traditions for Westerosi ones, referring to himself as king instead of adopting the freeholder model of government, taking on a house sigil and banner, and converting to the national religion.
Thanks for the question, Anon.

Rhaenyra is officially Heir
I almost was not going to redesign Rhaenyra's official Heir ceremony costume from the show, because I kind of like that one. If the cloak fabric didn’t wrinkle so under its own weight it might have been perfect.
While redesigning it I decided the thing to do was to push the Byzantine inspiration even farther. The shape, the mantle, and the crown with strings of pearls. Before you ask: yes, this took a solid amount of time to do with all those details in there. I wanted to use richer golds, loads more gems, and huge amounts of expensive fabric for this very formal, very important occasion. The crown even has a little dragon on it.

one thing that doesn’t really translate from the page with asoiaf is how differently the Targaryens must have styled themselves compared to Westerosi fashions, and I do really like the idea of the Targs arriving in Westeros with a kind of Byzantine style w intricate patterns and asymmetric design. but also kind of like the idea of that style fading with each generation, so by the time of the Dance their fashions are more an allusion to it. then maybe Aegon III reduces it a little more in his preference for monochromatic dress. maybe there are Targs who try to wear their heritage like Jaehaerys II, but between kings like Maekar and Aegon V there’s a steady adoption of the more typical Westerosi fashions till one day nobody really remembers what Targaryen fashion looked like, and Aerys II is creeping around in some musty approximation of the robes he sees in the tapestries that he insists on but only look like an eccentricity to his family and the nobles around him

Many fans often envision The Conquerors in a Byzantine fashion, and it's quite fitting. The Byzantine Empire, also known as the Eastern Roman Empire, persisted as the continuation of the Roman Empire, surviving the challenges that led to the fall of the Western Roman Empire in the 5th century AD. Similarly, The Conquerors, the Targaryen family, survived the Doom of Valyria, making them the heirs and continuation of the Valyrian Freehold.
SO, If we picture ancient Valyrians donning attire akin to 1st-century Romans, like stolla dresses and palla cloaks for women and togas for men, it logically follows that The Conquerors, as inheritors of the empire, would don Byzantine clothing in their portrayal.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
NOW! although the 6th-century Byzantine imperial costume boasts simplicity in silhouette, draping, and cut, it is truly elevated by its lavish bejeweled and embellished details.
Take, for instance, Empress Theodora's state costume: a white stola adorned with intricate gold and jewel embellishments at the hem, a purple paludamentum heavily embroidered with a luxurious gold border, and a prominently jeweled collar crowning the cloak—an iconic symbol of Byzantine fashion. Completing her regal ensemble is a headdress with cascading ropes of pearls. Meanwhile, her ladies in waiting don similar attire, albeit with fewer embellishments.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
All in all, Byzantine fashion is all about garments embroidered with gold and adorned with pearls and jewels.
And it is this extravagant opulence I wanna see The Conquerors in - Aegon adorned in a blood-red paludamentum pinned gracefully on his right shoulder, while Visenya and Rhaenys don heavily bejeweled collars and intricate hairstyles.
Tumblr media
However, it doesn't have to be overly historically accurate. I believe that as long as certain 'iconic' Byzantine fashion elements are incorporated, the silhouette can be altered. Take, for example, the 19th-century depictions of Empress Theodora:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
While most of them lack accuracy (with Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant's version being the closest to historical credibility), they successfully capture the essence of luxury, gold, and opulence.
Conclusion: I think if I were to draw The Conqueror sisters, I wouldn't necessarily adhere strictly to the historically accurate shapeless, modest silhouette. However, I would definitely strive to convey the essence of luxury and ornamentation in my depiction.

Modern University AU — Aemond Targaryen x Reader
☆ Aemond Targaryen x Reader
☆ Nonspecified gender and no physical attributes mentioned
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
You first met Aemond in your Politics in the Republic course
You were almost late and the only seat was next to him towards the back
He huffed, much to his annoyance of the person scooting behind him
No matter what class Aemond is, he will always try to be in the seat somewhat close to the exit
Aemond’s lecture notebooks are the fancy Japanese stationery notebooks. All in the same beige color. He only carries two pens
The Professor in the Republics course enjoyed cold calling on people, it wasn’t until the middle of the semester when Aemond would whisper the answer to you under his breath if you were stuck
The thing was…you were not stuck. You were not stupid. You just were not as quick as Aemond, which slowly sparked an academic rivalry
One day you showed up early to class, going over your highlighted course required books
The class filled in and Aemond thought you were absent, so he took his book bag off your seat — no need to reserve it. That was…until the professor had called on you and your answer was lightning fast
You did not sit next to him for the remainder of the year. You never saw him much after that class. You found out early in the semester he was a History and International Relations Double Major with a Philosophy Minor
One day when you were walking past the Business buildings, he bumped into another man with hair as icy blonde as his
“Hey what song are you listening to?” The shorter man said
“Leave me alone,” Aemond replied
“Alright! See you at home bitch!”
Aemond’s brother is the guy that interviews people on campus and does ridiculous “pranks” — very different brothers. It wasn’t until later when you also found out they also had a sister. Helaena, who’s the president of the Entomology Club
A year later, you and Aemond are in another class together. It was an Empires course that was a requirement for both of your majors. It was a smaller class size and instead of a final examination - the final is a presentation and a paper. The professor paired everyone by two and it just so happened that you were paired together
For the presentation, you were tasked to explore any empire of your choice so long as it was not taken. You both came to a long standing back and forth. Until you both agreed on the Byzantine Empire
You both started early on the research and presentation, at first getting to know each other at cafes until you took up whole study rooms in the library
During the last few weeks of the semester the study rooms were under renovation and the tables in the library were getting too crowded. “We could head back to my place,” He suggested. “Helaena will be there so we won’t be all alone or anything,” You agreed.
His place was nice, the Targaryen siblings commuted to campus. Understandable considering they live in luxury. The dormitories were shit
Later on in the night, at some impossible hour and you were still there you offhandedly said “How are you holding up. I’m not quick enough for you,”
“What?” He asked. “What are you talking about,”
“In class, you always gave me the answers. I knew them you know. I’m not stupid,”
A pause and then a realization. “Oh…that class. I never thought you were stupid,” He sighed. “I apologize for that impression. That is entirely my fault,” He fiddled with his hands. “I figured you were mad at me and I was scared if I offended you somehow. I guess I know why now. I missed having you sit with me,”
After the presentation was over, both of you got an A. All of your hard work and research pulled off. Aemond needed help on his essays but other than that, it was a smooth
Aemond offered to take you out to dinner to “celebrate the hard work” after that, you both texted each other over the break. It slowly went from “how are you?” to him sending pictures of his lizards
“Oh fuck how do I?” He said as he fiddled flipping the camera. His phone was positioned low and you laughed. “Oh I think I got it,” He said as FaceTime view went from the bottom of his face to his lizard tank. “This is my oldest one, her name is Vhagar”
“I don’t think I’ve seen your room before,” You said at 3 am
“Yeah. It’s on an opposite wing. Halaena’s bugs stay far away from my lizards,” He joked. “When you come back, I’ll give you a tour if you wish. I missed you,”
Your heart skipped a beat. He saw your eyes widen and he only realized what he said. He quickly ended the call and threw it on the bed.
He paced around the room and not a minute later his phone lit up. All it read from you was, “I missed you too. Let’s hang out soon,”
He texted back, “Sorry my phone died. Yes we can plan something soon,”
“Fast charger,” You texted back. His face was hot. “Goodnightttt”
He typed, “Goodnight,”
