Herbalism
Tumblr media
Okay, let’s talk herbalism!
It’s the “study or practice of the medicinal and therapeutic use of plants, now especially as a form of alternative medicine” (Merriam Webster Dictionary). In other words the original form of medicine created by our ancestors. Ancestors simply refers to the first groups of humans on earth, so don’t go shutting down just yet.
I find people shut down when they hear “heRBal mEDicine”. Why? Is it because it’s unfamiliar? Tends to be associated with occult, witchcraft, folklore, sorcery? Or maybe because it’s not a pharmaceutical drug? Ironically enough, another definition, defines herbal medicine as traditional medicine. An interesting argument because isn’t that what western medicine is called? Traditional medicine = western medicine. Alternative medicine = eastern medicine. I find this to be another genius idea the rich white man brainwashed us with to completely negate and erase ancient and indigenous frameworks to make it easier to pump drugs into our sacred bodies. Enough of that ramble for now. Here are 5 of my favorite herbs, their functions, and how I like to utilize their essence:
Ginger- zingiber officinale
I have adopted my mother’s tendencies with ginger. I know keep fresh grated ginger in a glass container ready to be consumed during low immunity seasons (covid-friendly). It has a strong and hot scent that can clear out any build-up in the chest, throat, and nose regions. Incredible for strengthening your immune system and soothing stomachaches, cramps, headaches, and sore throats with its anti-inflammatory properties. Amazing addition to food, too.
Nettle- urtica dioica
I first came across Nettle while creating elixirs and serums for hair wellness. I learned it can be ingested as a tea to help balance hormones, strengthen your heart, and strengthening your hair (you can also steep it to make a nettle tonic for hair). This is a tea I make right before my menstrual cycle because of its pain relieving qualities. Nettle leaves are packed with a shit ton of nutrients (iron, magnesium, vitamins C, D, and K and much more)!
Dandelion Root- taraxacum officinale
Dandelion Root is one of the newest additions to my pantry. I use my intuition to guide when to ingest herbs in addition to gathering information about the herb and consulting experts. I was lead to this root since coming off of birth control and rebalancing my womb space. Dandelion root is rich in antioxidants which are great for maintaining overall health. It supports your liver’s function by aiding in the digesting process. It’s great as a natural detoxifying agent.
Lavender- lavandula angustifolia
Most people know lavender for two reasons a). Its scent and b). Calming effects. Whether you like the scent or not its properties can be used to relieve restlessness and sadness. People use lavender oil for bug bites, minor burns, and body aches because of its anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, and soothing nature. Additionally, for my spiritual friends, it’s associated with the third-eye chakra (intuition, self-expression, creativity, and focus). I put it in my bath water to help soothe my body especially if I’ve had a long day.
Red Raspberry Leaf- rubus idaeus
Red Raspberry Leaf is also a lovely ally for those who have a womb. It works wonders for cramps and tension in abdomen and gut areas. I am loyal to Red Raspberry Leaf tea before and during my menstrual cycle because it strengthens the muscles in the uterus preventing painful cramps. RRL is high in nutrients like vitamins B and K, iron, magnesium, potassium, and more. It is known to have detoxifying properties as well as improving fat metabolism and weight loss.
Remember, you are a sovereign being. Do not leave it up to someone else to do what is good for your overall well-being. Do the research, consult the experts, and be careful when implementing new herbs and plants. I am not an herbalist or doctor (yet). This is how I use plant medicine for my body, mind, and spirit. Thank you for reading!

For real. Domesticated sheep these days would die of HEATSTROKE were they not shorn yearly.
While it doesn't grow on trees, it does grow on sheep, and so numerous that it's very affordable.
Sheep are also good for ecosystems, because they don't rip out the grass, but leave it low.
For example, in northern Germany, sheeps are kept on the flood dykes to keep the grass trimmed somewhat without removing the grass, which would impact a dyke's resistance against erosion. The grass also regrows stouter and more densely, which actually improves a dyke's flood resistance.
Tumblr media
Also, shearing sheep does not hurt them one bit! Sheep are very used to getting shorn, and a professional shearer can easily shear a sheep in less than five minutes.
If the wool is very matted as is common with sheep that have escaped and are living somewhat "feral", it does take an experienced shearer because the fleece will be matted, which creates wrinkles you can nick while shearing - but that's not the case with sheep that are regularly shorn.
Sheep are also an up and coming way to take care of solar farms - the sheep keep the grass around the panels trimmed nicely, and the panels provide natural shade for the sheep to rest and ruminate.
Solar farms are often fenced heavily and very well protected to stop copper thieves, so the sheep are also well-protected against potential predators!
Wool is also really cool from a hygiene standpoint - wool itself is hydrophilic, meaning it attracts water and repels oil. As such, our body oils, which is what smelly bacteria feast on, just don't stick to wool, or wash easily off, and as such, wool is indirectly antibacterial - simply because there's very little to eat for the bacteria.
In comparison, synthetic fibers are basically all lipophilic, meaning skin oils adhere strongly to them, making them a breeding ground for bacteria, so they start to smell earlier into a wearing cycle than wool.
Though I couldn't find any data on this, this could also suggest washing wool items would need less detergent!
Conclusion: Wool is a really cool material, and we should try to incorporate it into more modern fabrics!
Edit: @redraspberryleaf advised me you're not supposed to wash wool with regular detergents!

I don’t necessarily dislike tea, I just can’t get myself to drink it. Even when I don’t have a cup of coffee in the morning, I have no desire to drink tea. I’m trying to change that by making my own tea mixes and using lots of local and wild herbs. All of the lemon balm in this tea mix and in the infused honey I add to it came from one of our favorite forests. The soothing, lemony taste feels more magical knowing where it came from. #wildfood #wildherbs #foraging #tea #herbaltea #lemonbalm #redraspberryleaf #nettle #marshmallowroot #greenoattops #foragedtea https://www.instagram.com/p/Bx2yz8Kg0vA/?igshid=v4suduskjugg

Challenging what we know about healthy fruits and vegetation, the best part of a Red Raspberry plant isn’t the berry itself. Red Rasp leaf exhibits incredible health benefits; now being used as an astringent, tonic, stimulant, digestive remedy, and even as a preparation for childbirth - it’s extremely beneficial for female hormonal balance. IF you are looking for digestive relief, a laxative, cleanser or even a diuretic; the raspberry itself may be what you’re after. BUT not everything has to be a competition. You could totally eat both and heal yourself from within. …For more on Red Raspberry Leaf and its benefits for women's health click here.. https://www.getmomental.com/blogs/nutrition/what-you-need-to-know-about-red-raspberry-leaf-momental-nootropics (at New York, New York)
