Plant of the Day
Wednesday 24 July 2024
In the meadows of the abandoned island of Swona, Orkney, the Trifolium pratense (red clover) was flowering. The roots have the ability to fix nitrogen, enriching the soil for the grazing feral cattle. The flowers are popular with bumblebees for their nectar.

Finding stories among the wildflowers and soft sunlight 💌
Today was magic. The light hit just right: soft, golden, and effortless. Every shot felt alive—the wind fluttering the pages, the shadows falling just so. The kind of moment you hold onto long after it’s gone 🍃☘️💚

A research team has identified a wealth of bioactive compounds in red clover (Trifolium pratense) seeds and their oil, positioning them as a promising source for functional ingredients in food and health care products. Researchers reveal that red clover seed oil contains high concentrations of unsaturated fatty acids, phenolic compounds, and tocopherols, opening doors for potential pharmaceutical and nutritional applications. Red clover, a flowering plant in the Fabaceae family, is widely grown across temperate regions and known for its nitrogen-fixing ability, enriching soil fertility. It has been valued for its potential in sustainable agriculture and as a cover crop to prevent soil erosion and reduce pesticide use.

Red Clover - @moonwater-microfic - wc: 776
Red Clovers represent luck and good fortune
Regulus is never drinking on a work night ever again.
Never again, never again, never again, is the mantra that runs through his head as he cleans the spilled coffee from his shirt in the train station loo.
The entire day has been a series of unfortunate events, and it isn’t even 9 a.m. yet. A series of events that have culminated in him crying over the stain on his new white shirt in a public restroom when he should be at his desk in his office on the 12th floor of a London skyscraper.
See, there was only coffee on his shirt because he had to take the later, busier train, and someone jostled him, knocking against the hand that had been holding his coffee cup.
And he had only been on the later, busier train because he had missed his usual train.
And the reason he missed his usual train was that he’d overslept.
Of course, he overslept because his phone had died in the middle of the night, on account of forgetting to plug it in.
And he had only forgotten to plug it in because he had been drinking liquor on a Tuesday night like a bloody heathen.
Which brings him to the loo.
He spends an ungodly amount of time rinsing and drying his shirt, praying to whatever powers that be that the stain comes out. But, just his luck, the stain sticks. With a huff of frustration and a brief consideration that maybe he should just call in sick, Regulus trashes the mound of paper towels he’s accumulated and goes to storm out of the bathroom.
Only to run straight into the man walking in.
He notices three things in very quick succession: Firstly, he has fallen, embarrassingly, and landed in the other man’s arms. Secondly, the other man has very nice arms. Not buff, but clearly strong. His eyes drift up, leading him to the third thing—the man is gorgeous.
Maybe not in a ‘cover of magazines’ way, but gorgeous nonetheless, with wide green eyes and charmingly messy tawny curls. His nose is hooked, but in a way that seems to have been caused by being broken and subsequently healed incorrectly.
Regulus has to say something. He has to say anything to recover from the embarrassment of falling like a toddler, but he can’t think because he’s still standing in the man’s arms, leaning against his wiry chest.
“I—you—I didn’t—” he feels his face heat up as he attempts to connect enough words to form a sentence.
“It seems as though you’ve fallen for me,” the man says, a cheeky grin on his face and a sparkle in his eyes.
Cheeky bastard, Regulus thinks. But he can’t even be mad, because it works for him. Somehow, this man takes cheeky and turns it into charming. Or maybe just dorky. Barty has informed him that ‘dorky’ is his type—that he sees charisma where others see dweeby.
The man raises an eyebrow at him, and Regulus realizes that he’s still in his arms. Clearing his throat, he stands abruptly, holding his head high as if this isn’t the most mortifying interaction he’s ever had with one of the hottest men he’s ever seen.
“Remus,” the man says, and then a beat later adds, “…is my name. My name is Remus. I don’t know why I said it like that.”
The man—Remus—blushes. It’s adorable. Regulus wants nothing more than to make him do it again.
“Regulus is my name,” he says, grinning playfully.
“Regulus,” Remus repeats, and goddamn, no one has ever said his name so wonderfully before. “This, er, may be an odd question considering our…lovely location—” he gestures vaguely to the bathroom door behind Regulus. “But—can I give you my number?”
Please, dear God, is how Regulus answers in his head. Out loud, he says, “Sure,” and goes to pull his phone from his pocket when he remembers—“Fuck, it’s dead. Can I give you mine instead?”
Remus’s eyebrows lift in surprise, like he’d expected the ‘my phone’s dead’ thing to be an effort to brush him off rather than the truth. Not that Regulus blames him. What 20-something had a dead phone battery at 9 in the morning?
Regulus holds his hand out expectantly, and Remus is happy to comply, pulling his phone out and opening the phone app for Regulus to put in his information.
“I’ll call you,” Remus promises when Regulus hands his phone back.
“You better,” Regulus quips with a wink.
As he walks away, he can’t stop himself from thinking, Maybe my luck has turned around.
