hi i’m so sorry if this is weird! i saw your post about doing some film archive work and i wanted to ask a little about it if you have the time, like qualifications, education, what the job’s like and how you liked it, etc. i’m finishing up a major in studio art and minor in film right now and my original career plan will not be possible for at least a good while, so i’ve been considering other options. 90% of my experience is in library work so film archiving seemed like a good option!
thank you for taking the time to read and do feel free to ignore this message if you don’t have the time or just don’t want to! have a good day!
Hi! No worries, I don't mind answering questions, though I don't know how helpful my answers will be.
I didn't realize until after making my post about my job that most film archiving jobs do require some sort of qualifications such as a degree or certificate, and that our job not requiring that sort of thing is probably one reason they were able to get away with paying us so little. That said, I've heard similar things about getting library work-- that there are people who get degrees in library science and they are able to be hired to be librarians in an official capacity, but other jobs with similar duties may not require the same training. So maybe you will have resources I didn't, through your experience in library work! It is also possible that I am talking nonsense. To the extent that I had any qualifications, they consisted of 1. an art degree (sequential art), and 2. hands-on experience shooting film and developing it in my sink, but many of my coworkers had no prior experience with film that I know of and just happened to answer the job posting.
I did enjoy my job for the most part, though like any job a lot of the day-to-day experience of it is the people, and it became pretty dull after most of my favorite coworkers moved on and management started getting megalomaniacal about productivity. (I think this sort of thing is antithetical to the practice of conservation but as I've established, my lab was not... standard.) It was really cool getting to work with film every day though, and I got to see some really fascinating things (the Kinsey work, but also old instructional programs and silent films, and very occasionally people's home movies).
My duties involved inspecting the film for damage, cleaning and repairing it, noting down metadata about the film as an object (for example whether it's an original or a print, negative or positive, what film stock, whether it has sound), and then determining the appropriate frame rate and scanning it at our very fancy scanner machines. Sometimes I'd get to do color correction and I really enjoyed that. After that point, scanning usually entailed watching the film at slightly faster than normal speed as it ran through the scanner, and keeping an eye out for any debris we'd missed at a previous stage in the process or anything going wrong with the scanner. Sometimes film would be very warped and that would make scanning difficult; a couple times a film popped clean off the scanner and multiple people needed to hold it in place while one unlucky worker wound it back up by hand. We had special metal plates to hold warped film in place, but sometimes hubris got the better of us and we didn't use them when we should've. Also, they would make horrible rhythmic squeaking noises for the duration of the scanning process.
This was really long but I guess the takeaway is: it's fun work if you can get it, but I have no idea how I got it.
Also: lab safety is very important! If, for instance, your incompetent boss spills a huge drum of perchloroethylene and rushes in to try to clean it up bare-handed with some paper towels, you should perhaps consider calling multiple workplace safety organizations about it. That's what we did.

i was going to post about this but then forgot but anyway i feel like it really is the case that the reason neil and chris have been still going for over 40 years and haven't had a major falling out or break is because of the nature of how much they respect each other both on a personal level and also a working partnership level
#i think the moment it clicked for me as to why theyve been together for so long is how tom watkins tried to tell neil to go solo#because he was convinced chris didnt do or contribute anything because he thought chris was just neil's bf#which is like a Whole other thing#but neil was very firm on not going solo and ditching chris and standing up for him and pointing out all of the major stuff chris does#and that neil is very self-aware that he probably couldnt be successful on his own and that chris is an integral part of the group#that really comes across with how much he will flat out say something was chris' idea even when chris is embarrassed by it#the other thing is neither of them have ever had an ego. the only circumstances is maybe when chris would get upset not being filmed#w/ the tonight show debacle that was v clearly he was in the right to be upset they wouldnt film him as if he wasnt the other member#and then that stuart price quote where he talked about how he's seen them get into arguments and disagreements over stuff#but they work through it in a way that they clearly respect the other's opinion and dont take it personally#not to mention the multiple rough personal events theyve gone through throughout their career#looping back to the ego thing the other thing is they recognize that their knowledge complements the other#like neil having never considered a bassline before meeting chris and realizing how important it was#they both bring something to the table that the other can't or can't do well#ig long story short theyve succeeded in having a long career because of the level of mutual respect in their relationship#and that they know how to communicate and work through conflicts when they happen#and at the end of the day making music together is something they enjoy and get pleasure from whether they release the music or not#they even kind of mention it in the reel stories ep with neil making sure chris speaks his opinion in interviews#i really like that he's mindful of that and is conscious of not dominating the conversation and letting chris speak#its just nice to see idk psb wouldnt fully work if they didnt have such a strong relationship#also last i promise it helps that neither of them have kids or been married so no hiatuses because of family and stuff#i mean theyve both been in relationships and given idk too much detail it seems like they made it work out#i guess i mean with neil and his 90s relationships i should say#yeah ok thats my last point hamsndndns sorry thanks if u made it this far i have a lot of thoughts

2 & 34 for the film asks <3
Already answered 2!
34. An underrated movie?
The 2019 Carmilla adaptation gets some shit (and yes, okay, it's a bleak film), but it's really really good! You're supposed to feel bad by the end of it! You're suppossed to be all "fuck why did it have to end like that?"! It's ambiguous on the supernatural aspect (wink-wink Yellowjackets plug here), because that is what some of the characters think is what's going on, but you also still have enough deniability to say that "no, actually these girls were in love and you wanted some excuse to be evil".
It has a 2.8 rating on letterboxd and oof does it not deserve that.
thanks for giving me an opportunity to vent haha!

just watched kier-la janisse's 3 hour documentary epic about folk horror as a mode of interpretation and understanding of vastly different styles and eras of genre cinema and despite everything the fact remains that most "horror" "fans" and creators are cowards who firmly stick to their guns regarding their ingrained assumptions and prejudices about cultures/beings/identities that are seen as the other, continuing to proliferate these damaging harmful narratives without questioning which parties may benefit from a version of the story being told from this particular point of view. what ends does the instilling of fear, the most powerful, potent, galvanising in some cases emotion, serve for an audience? (obviously this is the case with any other genre and in actuality just a far wider problem sort of inevitable in a regime that instructs which ideas are to be spread to the masses) but again, it's vital to consider this issue specifically within the realm of horror, since nothing inspires scapegoating, hatred and self-righteous violence quite like blind fear of a phenomenon that the required effort has not been put into comprehending

Hey! I hope you're well. I was listening to a song and it made me think of your wonderful work. Firstly, I adore how you write post-canon jwds: all the imperfections and sweet moments of quiet companionship/loyalty/trust/unspoken love etc. You are truly a master of depicting domesticity and yearning. It makes me think of With You - Valerie June (your work and this song are in abundance of lovely warm feelings). I hope the song brings you joy. Have a lovely day :)
aaah, thank you for the kind words!! :')) that means a lot, as i love writing post-canon jwds (they hold such a special place in my heart).
and i am already adoring with you--i love the quiet vibes, it reminds me of happy summer days :'))
