Pour one out for Reggie, always second choice for the Lodges after Archie

SECOND CHOICE FOR EVERYONE. like literally it is so hard to evaluate reggie (especially w/r/t the lodges) without bringing in The Tragedy Of The Side Character Rival-Foil who exists in the narrative to experience B-plot versions of the A-plot in miniature

riverdale-the-metanarrative is so blatantly full of guys who are different versions of archie and where his character could go in the story if he didn't have to be the protagonist-hero - munroe as the jaded star fighter with the same nickname hiram originally used on archie as an endearment, who could get out of this damn town if he commits to sports. eric jackson as the disabled vet with unmanaged ptsd who betrayed his unit for a manipulative man in authority who just gets to be a respectable figure in society while his groomed victims suffer (and he could speak up and get justice if he's willing to handle the social impacts of being labeled a survivor). kevin as the openly-gay damagingly-impulsive, validation-seeking, people-pleasing, insecure joiner with a nice-but-emotionally-distant dad who keeps trying to find happiness through in-group conformism. julian s7 as literal understudy, and the guy who died in war (also got targeted and negged by s7 reboot hiram lodge in the s7 reboot version of wrestling. dramatic monologues).

reggie is like. the most powerful and tragic of all of these archie analogs bc he's sometimes a rival, too. so his jealousy and inferiority complex towards archie exists both inside and outside of the narrative! all of those other archie reflections aren't also competing with him and comparing themselves to him and constantly getting handed his leftovers and cast-offs and feeling that that is what's happening. but reggie is :\

Not Another Riverdale Love Story - Screw This Up With Me

Happy 4th of July for those in the US (I say this knowing full well what our country is going through)! I'm bringing this to you a day early because I will be at a convention all weekend starting on the fourth.

I cannot tell you how excited I am to bring you this chapter. This has lived rent free in my brain since I wrote it and I have been counting down the days (literally counting down the days) until I could bring this to you. Now, I know what you're going to say. "Why didn't you post it as soon as you wrote it?" Well, a few reasons. One, I want to keep the pace that I've been going, which means that I have a surplus of chapters waiting to be posted. Because, things in life keep pop up and it gives me the grace and time to continue to write knowing I have something to keep my schedule going. Like this weekend, or family issues (like my grandfather being at the end), etc. This is sort of a discipline. It keeps me writing, it keeps me thinking, but not at a breakneck burnout pace, you know? Also, it keeps me on my toes and keeps me excited for what I'm writing. Because I go back and read what I've written when I go through my final pass through and it keeps the love alive.

I know you're all going to love this chapter. It's a bit chaotic and the cast list grows. We see new pairings (like my found siblings Jughead & Cheryl - but only thin tendrils nothing like LSftSH) and the amount of research I did into this... Because I know you all have some of the keenest eyes for plot holes lol!

“Pizzas will be here in an hour!” Veronica’s voice rang out. “What are you guys looking at?”

Cheryl, softly closed the folder, moving it to her side and out of view of her hostess. She let her gaze linger over Jughead’s face, noting how composed he was trying to be. “I made a faux pas. I thought I’d tease our little Forsythe here and it completely backfired.” Jughead let his eyes flutter close letting his shoulders droop slightly with relief. The relief felt too good to harp on the fact that Cheryl used his given name. If not for his sister, he’d tease her back and call her Jellybean for as much as she ate the sweet treat. “Hey, if you were thinking of a name for a powerful but elegant woman, what would you name her? We need something… magical.”

“Besides mine?” Veronica teased. “I mean, I am cut from the same cloth as great actresses like Veronica Lake. But… What was that old romantic movie with Harrison Ford? It had a superb name for a title.”

You walked into the crowded house full of drunk high school kids. You hated high school parties, they were always overcrowded and sweaty. You looked around for Reggie but only saw the idiots he called his friends. "Have any of you seen Reggie?" You asked walking to the group of boys but they all shook their heads. "Ask Archie." One of them spoke which you smile towards and left.

You searched for the red headed boy thru out the house and eventually did achieve but it was far to late. You found the extremely drunk red head dancing on the countertops of someone's kitchen. "Archie get down." You demanded while holding your hands out for Archie to take. "Thank You [name]."He giggled on his way down. "Let me take you home, it's obvious Reggie isn't coming." You started walking towards the exit with Archie leaning on you for support.

____Time skip_____

After a few minutes, you're practically dragging Archie to his front door. "Thank you again [name]." As he spoke you could tell he was starting to get sober. "No problem, next time don't get so shit-faced." You laugh and Archie joined in.

As he laugh you couldn't quite catch what the feeling was in your stomach but you acted on it. You took a step forward and kissed him which he quickly countered with kissing you back. As you broke away from him you could see the hurt in his eyes and he saw the same in yours. "I shouldn't have done that." You acknowledged and walked off.

___Two days Later___

IT WAS EATING YOU UP INSIDE! That moment, the kiss, Archie, the feeling you get in your stomach when you are around him now, hiding all this from Reggie. It was all too much to handle. The only two people who knew were Cheryl and Betty. Cheryl was your best friend so you were going to tell her regardless. Betty just realized something was up with you and you didn't feel like lying.

You've been trying your best to ignore Archie but that feeling still erupts in your stomach every time you see him. You've been trying to be more touchy with Reggie to take your mind off of it. Off of him. Reggie was far to perfect for you, you loved him and only him… right? 

You walked towards your 5th period only to be pulled into a random closet. A pair of lips almost immediately started attacking yours. "You look so hot today." Reggie complimented with his classic smirk. He pushes you into a cabinet and started kissing you harder.

"I'll take care of everything, ok?" He smiled and kissed you again. Which you grabbed his waist and pushed him closer to you. "I love you," Reggie whispered in your ear. You couldn't lie anymore, not to the one person you love the most. You pushed Reggie off, ignoring his confused face. "I kissed Archie," You admitted. The feeling of finally letting the secret be told aloud was immediately shot when you saw Reggie’s face.

Reggie stayed silent while backing away slowly. "I went to the party and he was drunk so I walked him home and we kissed." You quickly explained walking towards him, only for him to continue backing away. "Who kissed first?" He asked first looking down at the ground. He couldn't even look at you. "Me." You told.

"Fuck [name]," Reggie responded on the verge of crying. "I'm sorry baby it was a stupid mistake." You tried to reason and Reggie looked at you in disbelief. "Do you still love me? Was all our memories together for nothing?” Reggie asked with pleading eyes.

"I don't know." You answered honestly

Those three words were all Reggie needed to break down but he refused to do it in front of you tho. After a deep breath, he slaps you right across your face.

"Go to hell [last name]." Reggie stormed out.

 No lie, I read this and my immediate thought was Buffy?? But let’s see if we can do something a little different. 

Also, this got kinda long so I have put it below the cut:

So instead of the Slayer being a random chosen one from anywhere in the world it’s a bloodline thing. Sort of…like the potential is in the bloodline but not every member gets to be a Slayer, the previous Slayer has to pass the mantle down. 

Rose was the prior slayer, however things had significantly slowed down since her grandmother and great great grandmother had the mantles. Victoria and her parents insisted it was because the Slayers were winning (There a few dozen slayer families around the world) and that Rose should live her life. 

Rose tries, she really does but she can’t shake the feeling that something is wrong. She starts working at nightclubs and bars to try and get a casual peak into the nightlife and she does hear some interesting rumors and urban legends but they all turn out to be that, urban legends. 

She meets Ray and they begin dating and eventually he manages to convince her she should focus on living. It doesn’t help that she’s witnessed some deaths that aren’t paranormally related and it sort of cements everything everyone has been telling her. Life is too short, and it will pass her by entirely if she isn’t careful. She and Ray settle down and they have Julie and Carlos and Rose wonders if since the world has gotten safer if she should just let the mantle die with her. 

Cut to (or open here and we learn all of that as back story later, not sure yet) 17 year old Julie is dealing with the recent sudden death of her mother, just like the rest of her family. It’s become this massively speculated rumor mill of an incident. She fell off a building at a height that should have killed her instantly but it didn’t, it was a slow and agonizing night for her and her family. Many speculate she was attempting suicide. Rose insists she was not, insisting she was thrown and that they were all wrong, it’s so much worse than they realized. 

Julie doesn’t know what to believe in the months leading up to her Mother’s death her mother had turned into an entirely different person. Even got into some fights with Victoria and her Dad. 

Mostly Julie just wishes the incident would stop haunting her dreams. Tired and guilty for feeling tired of hearing her mother’s final words repeating over and over. “I’m sorry Julie, I should have prepared you better. You deserve better and I hope you can do what I couldn’t.”

It’s not even been a month since the funeral, Julie hasn’t even has time to process all of her grief when one night she’s home alone and she hears rummaging in the garage. She knows what she should do, the sensible thing, duck her head, get inside, don't mess with the things that go bump in the night. Even if she’s sure it’s just a stray cat or raccoon.  It’s her entire thought process even as her feet move of their own accord. 

Inside she finds three boys and during hers (and theirs panicked screaming) she instinctively grabs one of them and rather sloppily gets him pinned to the ground. It’s Reggie, after the initial panicking dies down and while Julie tries to process what the hell she just did he tries a cheesy line about their positions. 

This immediately knocks Julie back to the fact that she’s found three strange teenage boys in her garage and demands to know who they are and what they’re doing. They introduce themselves as Luke, Reggie, and Alex and say they were looking for Rose. Which just angers Julie thinking of course they have to be trying to prank her because who hasn’t heard about what happened to her mom by this point. 

The guys genuinely didn’t know. They’re kind of cut off from many news sources at the moment. 

It takes a bit of back and forth before Alex straight up just asks if that makes Julie the new Slayer now. Julie is confused and doesn’t know who to be mad or upset with anymore as they finish telling her about how her mom was one of the last remaining Slayers, as many other Slayer families had allowed themselves to die out in the extended time of peace. 

The guys (who refuse to tell Julie how they know everything they are telling her) say it’s all one big plot led by a vampire who gained a lot of power in the late 1920’s. (Again, not sure of this would be revealed up front or discovered through the story)

Julie decides they are pranking her, and tells them to leave her alone. Her dreams only get weirder from here on out. 

The next day at school she tells Flynn all about it. Flynn does some digging on her own during school, while Julie has the world’s weirdest school day (think all the stereotypical I’ve got powers now type scenes only Julie is in major denial) By the end of the school day Flynn is fully convinced Julie is this Slayer figure and Julie just wants to drop out of school and sleep for a year straight. 

Though Julie does get incredibly intrigued by the fact that one of the pieces of evidence Flynn found was a series of missing persons reports throughout the years. Particularly the article about a band from the 90’s named Sunset Curve. 

After school as Julie gets home she can see that all the garage windows have been boarded up and goes to confront the guys. Who all of course panic when she throws the garage doors open. They admit they’re vampires, but don’t know why or how their turning got botched, but they know it did because they do not act like a good 90% of the other vampires they know. 

They managed to evade Caleb and had been getting updates from their friend Willie who went missing. Worried and more than a little desperate they turned to Rose for help. Which just immediately sours their relationship with Julie more because now she has someone to blame for her mother’s death. 

The guys help defend Julie as she now has a giant target on her back as an untrained Slayer. Still a dangerous threat but one Caleb thinks he can take out. Flynn thinks Julie should talk to her dad or Aunt about it but Julie doesn’t want to cause her Dad more grief and is kind of mad at both of them for keeping something like this from her. 

Flynn, Julie and the guys, slowly learn the whole Slayer thing together. Albeit begrudgingly on Julie’s part especially as far as the guys are concerned but there is no denying they make a good team and seems to be their way of trying to make amends. 

Eventually Julie does confront her family about things. Mostly because, thanks to Carlos, the rest of her family discover her Slayer thing and try to get upset with her first about not telling them. Which of course leads to a huge fight about them keeping it from her in the first place. 

Victoria and Ray absolutely do not like the fact Julie has teamed up with a trio of vampires. But Ray quickly changes his mind when the three start helping out around the house. Victoria also trains Julie what she remembers from her training with Rose when they were younger, she may not have been the one chosen for the mantle but that didn’t mean she didn’t need the training. 

It all builds up to a showdown with Caleb, who initially tries to just do the vampiric seduce Julie to be a vampire thing. But then he makes the mistake of letting it slip that he was the one who killed Rose and Julie sees red. Just before she manages to kill him Caleb drops the “you kill me then your friends are going to die too” which does cause Julie to hesitate for a bit but she does what she knows must be done for ‘the greater good’ and kills Caleb.

In the aftermath of that, and the vampires Caleb sired dying as well, the world a whole have to recover from the sheer number of people who’d actually been vampires hiding in plain sight. 

Fortunately for Julie and the guys(including Willie) Caleb wasn’t the one who turned them. Unfortunately that does leave them all to contemplate what it is they should do. In the meantime, they all just let themselves enjoy life for a bit.

some like to say rafe came about in some unnatural way and others have joked that he's actually part demon, that his rage is rooted in evil. nonsense, all of it. rafferty came out of his mother screaming in the back of a shitty car on the way to a limerick hospital. he's always been as jagged as the irish shores he came from, but it's not always rage that's fueling him. sure it’s always been there; seated rage that burns in his chest and throat, but that's not what you see behind his eyes. no, that there is a pure, untamed, feral spirit shining through those baby blues. he's as natural as they come, it's just no one's been able to domesticate him yet.

his mother tried first, his father wasn't worth two shits at the start but his mother did what she could. truth is, he was never really raised. up until he was somewhere around five or six years old, his mother had him in and out of spaces to live, nothing was consistent. her addiction made it impossible to hold down a steady job and dealers coming to collect when she did. despite trying to get clean, wait lists for rehabs were long and she couldn't afford private care, let alone someone to take care of him. it was a double edged sword. rafe doesn't remember much about her, but he does remember her eyes and the apology that always seemed to be in them. he doesn't blame her.

when she passed, they’d tracked down his father who ended up bringing him to his new home with an older half-brother he’d never met and their mother. only consistencies he had was the home itself (it was nice not having to move every two seconds) and his sibling. they were only a few years older than him but tried to look out for him anyways. they carted him all over the place and while they certainly didn't try to tame him, they did manage to keep him alive, fed, and clothed. which is more than rafe could've done on his own.

everywhere rafe went on his own he left a trail of chaos and destruction. got to the point that no school would take him by the time he reached the age of fourteen and that was fine by him. he hated school anyways. only was ever good for fighting, flirting, and food. he dropped out at that point and lived like he always did, doing whatever the fuck he wanted to.

he'd tag along with his siblings on their jobs, if for no other reason than to watch their back and for something to do. he'd pick up odd jobs that interested him― arson, intimidation, getting things out of people by any means necessary, fulfilling a hit every so once and awhile. most were related to violence and destruction in some way or another. there were times he would take up the protection role, glad to do it for free in some cases but you wouldn't hear him admitting to that. eventually, he found the world of fighting.

rafe started training and honing his craft. but then their sibling got locked up and while he could be the one to stick around and take on the role of caregiver to the step-mother who cared for him when he had no one and visit them in prison, rafe was young and didn't know responsibility if it slapped him in the face.

instead he made a name for himself on the street as a savvy drug dealer and rings and octagons in the underground fighting world. he didn't often lose and if he did it was a hell of a fight because if there was one thing to know about rafe; if he was conscious, he was getting back up. in the ring he found a home he'd needed, craved. a place to unleash the unbridled rage and hone the primal chaos on one opponent. finally a release that had some sort of satisfaction. outside the fighting world there'd been hits put on him a few times, he'd been stabbed, shot, and even hit by a car once. he never knew if it was for dealing or fighting. sure, this hindered him for awhile but he healed and was right back to it. honestly, he doesn't think much into it either. he went where they told him to go to get the job done whether it was fighting or dealing. questions complicated things. if he didn't like something, he didn't do it.

eventually this led him to texas where he'd been able to find a new home for the past six years. got roped into helping the violet messengers though he isn't quite sure what their purpose is but he's never been a fan of rich fucks that try to step on others just for the sake of keeping them down. the ones that stopped his mom from getting help, forced his step-mother into work she didn't want to do, and constantly stripped rights away like it was theirs to give in the first place. they seemed to be on board with that, liked his style, and that was good enough for him.

his sibling got ahold of him eventually and came to join him in texas. started coaching him for fights better than he’d ever had before ( just as they'd done unpaid for a couple decades). they are about the only person who can slow him down or put him in his place when he flies off the rails. life is where it should be, rafe gets to go all over town, sells to some of the wealthiest and everyone in between. he gets to fight and have fun. he doesn't know where he wants it to go but he's fine not figuring that out till he gets there.

HEADCANONS.

has a lot of scars and replaced teeth with gold ones. he always wears a pair of silver boxing gloves around his neck that were gifted to him by his mother before she passed.

met his girlfriend gilly at a party dressed as robin hood but people kept calling him peter pan and she was dressed as a fairy so he asked her to be his tinker bell. the rest is history.
