Rich Aucoin - Synthetic: Season One - TONTO rides again on the lead-off track of this new album featuring 37 classic synthesizers
Note the call for collaborators in the final paragraph below:
Rich Aucoin is announcing his next album entitled Synthetic. The record is a rare Quadruple Album with its 4 seasons/LPs being staggered in 6 month intervals over the next 2 years. The album, which began at The National Music Centre in Calgary, Alberta in March 2020, houses one of the world’s most extensive collection of rare and historic synthesizers. There, Aucoin was doing the Artist In Residence program and recorded 51 synthesizers to begin the project. The project was paused with the start of the pandemic and Aucoin shifted back into film scoring and worked on the critically-acclaimed and short-listed New Yorker - Films of the Year documentary, No Ordinary Man, about the trans-masculine jazz musician Billy Tipton. “I didn’t want that initial period of the pandemic to influence these songs which were already far along at the start of the lockdowns so I waited until the vaccines were announced before continuing with the work on this record. I was lucky to get the scoring gig for No Ordinary Man as it made real-world deadlines at a time when my life didn’t have much structure without touring. Scoring is something I also would like to do more of so I was happy to be given the opportunity again.” This record is a good demonstration of Aucoin’s scoring potential as well as it’s a quadruple instrumental album; a huge contrast to United States, Aucoin’s previous, and most vocal-heavy album to date. “Lyrics just take me so long to write that I just want to take a couple years to make other kinds of albums before going back lyrical music as I can write instrumental music much faster.” This first full-length features Aucoin as the solo musician playing some 37 synthesizers including: Arp 2600s, the Supertramp owned Elka Rhapsody 610 String Machine, Formanta Polivoks, Novatron T550, Oxford Synthesizer Company Oscar, Selmer Clavioline CM 8 and the legendary TONTO which the first release off the record was made on. TONTO (“The Original New Timbral Orchestra”), is the first and largest multitimbral polyphonic analog synthesizer in the world. It was designed and constructed over several years by Malcolm Cecil. It began as a Moog Modular Synthesizer Series III owned by record producer Robert Margouleff. Next came a second Moog III, then 4 Oberheim SEMs, 2 ARP 2600s, and then modules by Serge with Moog-like panels, EMS, Roland, Yamaha as well as several custom modules designed by Serge Tcherepnin and Cecil. Finally, digital sound-generation circuitry as well as a collection of sequencers were added with MIDI control. The instrument looks like the cockpit of a spaceship in a semi-circle of curved wooden cabinets measuring 20ft (6.1 m) in diameter and 6ft (1.8 m) tall. For this track, Aucoin recorded 3hrs of music before cutting it down, arranging and overlaying its takes to turn it into the 6 minute track it became. “It’s a powerful synth that’s like the Voltron of synths; combining Arps and Moogs to make the command centre looking synth it is.” While the first season of this album is Aucoin solo, seasons 2-4 will feature a few hundred fellow synth enthusiasts thanks to the help of Moog Synthesizers helping spread the word in Aucoin’s call out for collaborations. “It’s not too late as well, if anyone wants to be a part of this record, which will easily have more synths on it than any other record in history, just send me a DM on social media and I’ll add you to the excel sheet of friends, fans and fellow synth nerds who have expressed interest to be on the record.”

Joeeeeee Hilllllllsssss
joe!! woo!!!
despite being one of the few hermits who have made and released their own music, joe doesnt actually use any music in his hermitcraft videos (at least in the ones ive gone through) so he doesnt have a segment in my playlist </3 i will however use this opportunity to talk about redacted hills sings joe hills cause god i love them So Much.
i currently have brainrot over the song “lines,” especially the lyrics, i wanna draw something for this song sometime soon! the themes of it are very rich aucoin to me, bonus points for reminding me of my favorite song of all time.
lay your head down and dream is also always a favorite (and by that i mean certified comfort song). joe often plays it as a stream intro song (im not counting streams for this playlist unfortunately) and it makes me so happy,,, PLUS i heard another version of it that joe played for the outro of a recent stream! its so cute <33

The AM: May 22, 2023
Tumblr media
Calgary may be in the midst of a smoke-filled Armageddon, but it's also the May long weekend, so, take your solace where you can get it. This week's episode (The AM's ninth anniversary, for what it's worth) alternates between blissful tunes and moments of anxiety, but hopefully lands on the right side of reassuring. Hope you enjoy it.
Some highlights:
Hollie Kenniff’s We All Have Places That We Miss is quite possibly my favourite ambient release of 2023 (which has been a strong year so far). Harrison’s foray into more complex, jazzy arrangements has been a pleasant surprise from an already fascinating producer. Joni Void’s “Tape” is possibly the most pop thing I’ve heard from the Montreal producer. Superior Viaduct’s reissue of Byard Lancaster’s debut was a great introduction to a joyous jazz release. Alejandro Bravo’s take on “(There’s) Always Something There to Remind Me” has the most delightfully playful phrasing. And Mega Bog’s apocalyptic synth-pop is a perfect soundtrack for smoky skies.
(But honestly, it’s all great)

Find A Song that is a call to unity for mankind
Rich Aucoin - The Other
Canadian Indie Electronic musician Rich Aucoin has released his latest single ‘The Other’, the second single lifted from his anticipated third full-length album Release slated to drop on the 17th of May via Haven Sounds.
Born, raised and currently based in Halifax, Canada, Rich Aucoin has been fully immersed in music ever since he can remember, learning how to play almost any instrument he could get his hands on while also teaching himself production and home-recording. A philanthropist at heart, Aucoin has raised money for several charities with his music. He has cycled coast to coast twice for both Childhood Cancer Canada and The Canadian Mental Health Association/Mental Health America; cycling to each show. He has also crossed Canada for the Canadian Heart & Stroke Foundation running a series of half-marathons.
Release was inspired by a wide range of music such as David Bowie, Holly Herndon, Fatboy Slim, Björk, John Lennon, Future Islands, Caribou and Chic just to name a few. These influences are evident in his music, as his diverse sound could be compared to a mix of MGMT, Beck, Arcade Fire, Spoon, and M83 all the while still maintaining his own unique blend of organic and synthetic instrumentation. His third album, Release, sees Aucoin grapple with the concept of mortality by using Alice in Wonderland (1951) as a metaphor for the journey. Again, the album can be played as alternate soundtrack along to the film.
Adding visuals to this infectious track, ‘The Other’ music video isn’t just a presentation of stunning imagery but so very strong with a message. While the artist himself explains the concept below, from an outsider's perspective the music video is a call to unity for mankind because even though we are no longer segregated in the terms most would understand, we are still very much so in our minds and by class. The artist has chosen to make a statement that will resonate with anyone who has ever looked at the world, the way we treat each other, the way we draw lines between ourselves and others and wondered why it is like this and what do we need to do to change it?
When explaining about the video, Rich Aucoin said, “The Other video takes place on an alien planet where a tyrant rules a dystopian society divided into quadrants based on the various colours of the aliens' masks. There is a strict no physical inter-coloured contact rule on this planet such that even the soldiers on this planet only touch others with long metal sticks. The Blue and Red hero/ heroines of the story live in their segregation watching their own versions of the news until they join forces in a rainbow revolution against the tyrant and the ruling class. Inspired by George Lucas' THX and Ridley Scott/Denis Villeneuve's Blade Runner and Stanley Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut, the video reveals the album cover image of the upcoming release with Rich's 3D printed skull.” (press release)

yes i do this is your invitation to talk about rich aucoin!! i have not listened to him i am coming to you for Starter Advice. what would you recommend to sell me on his music? :3
HIIII ANONNN :D
if youre looking for an overview of his music, i made this playlist as a “best of” sort of thing (ignore the first half of it). if you have the chance, a rich aucoin concert is a pretty great experience as well
however, imo one of the best ways to experience rich aucoin is through his albums. theyre all different from each other (as rich’s rule for himself is to never do the same thing twice), but my favorite and what i think represents his music best is we’re all dying to live
always listen to richs albums in order cause god DAMN they can tell a story. his first 3 albums plus his first ep were written to sync up with movies and it shows! synthetic season 1 isn’t one of these, but i still recommend it because it came out this month and its what rich is currently doing!
beyond this point i will go into full infodump territory talking about each of his albums so if youre looking for only starter advice you can ignore this
alright. first ep, personal publication (2007) my beloved. rich made this completely by himself when he was 23 and didn’t know what he was doing but holy shit i have so much brainrot about it. it was written to sync up with the original animated how the grinch stole christmas and i cant share that on this post because copyright infringement but please dm me or send an ask off anon if you want it, its my favorite of his syncs, it works so well. there are a lot of tiny parts in the songs that are also sounds effects in the movies and theyre so fun to pick apart aaaa fun facts: 1) when rich released the sync, he got a cease and desist letter from dr seuss enterprises 2) he toured personal publication in a grinch costume 3) the title “10,342 cuts for the us” is a joke about how many edits he had to make on the drums. making an ep all by yourself sounds rough.
first full album, and my favorite album of all time, we’re all dying to live (2011). ough. this album, man. this is my favorite because it feels so much like a collage. instead of one overarching story like personal publication, this one feels like it tells so many smaller ones. it syncs up to 30-40 different public domain movies, and you can watch it here! fun facts: 1) (this is more like the main fact of this album) rich made this album while biking across canada and it ended up with 500 total collaborators on it 2) some of those collaborators include an elementary school choir
second album, ephemeral (2014)! this one is SO FUN. it syncs up with a claymation version of the little prince, and you can watch it here. its short and very, very sweet, as richs intention was to make it feel like a live show. fun fact: the opening track has samples from rich’s actual crowds. :’)
third album! release (2019)! id also call this one of the more iconic ones, especially album cover-wise. its an album that really reminds you that rich aucoin has a philosophy degree, as its all about mortality and dealing with death. fittingly, it syncs to alice in wonderland, and same copyright deal with personal publication that i cant share it here. this contrasts ephemeral because it takes its time, its slower and more retrospective. also bonus points for having my favorite song of all time, “the other” fun fact: the album cover is a 3d-printed replica of rich aucoin’s actual skull
fourth album! united states (2020)! this was written when rich biked through the united states witnessing firsthand the effects of trump’s presidency. as youd expect, this album gets a bit political. at this point rich stopped doing the movie sync thing, which breaks my heart but is understandable, but this album feels like a road trip nonetheless. fun fact: rich is canadian lol
fifth album! (albums?) synthetic season 1 (2022)! we’re up to present day! while i love all the other albums thematically, this one may be my favorite musically. the gimmick for this one is that its made entirely using synths and has little to no lyrics. its also a quadruple album, meaning a total of 3 hours of synth music. only the first quarter is out right now, and its really, really good. fun facts: 1) the opening track is made with (and rightfully named after) the largest synth in the world, tonto! 2) rich is being considered for a guiness world record for an album with the most different synths on it. season 1 already has 37
