My Thoughts On: Rhythm Heaven DS
Hi there! It's Alex! I recently (ok, like a month ago) finished Rhythm Heaven for the Nintendo DS, or more specifically I played the Japanese release, Rhythm Tengoku Gold. I absolutely adored the first game on the Gameboy Advance, so I was really optimistic going into the second entry of the series! Did it pay off? Eh...
Keep in mind that all my thoughts should be taken with a grain of salt, as I am not an objective game analysis expert or reviewer, I'm simply sharing my personal thoughts.
I've never leaned much into the whole "Nintendo gimmick controls", like the Wiimote or the DS touchscreen. Some games make good use of the touchscreen like Cave Story on the 3DS eShop allowing for more seamless inventory selection, but mostly I view these things as novelties that could be done without. I play Skyward Sword on the Switch so that I can use button controls instead of motion, for example. So when I saw that RHDS was controlled 100% using the touchscreen, I wasn't thrilled. BUT, I decided to give it the benefit of the doubt and start my journey!
The first few games are alright, with a new take on Built to Scale from the GBA entry, and some more neat rhythm games, but right after Remix 1 we reach my first symptom of carpal tunnel: Ping Pong. The Ping Pong game in RHDS is easily one of my least favorite rhythm games in the series so far, and that's counting the rest of this game! It was my first taste of the mixed bag that is Rhythm Heaven DS. Con: The rhythm games aren't as consistent as the first one. While I pretty consistently enjoyed the games in the GBA game, the DS entry constantly had me on highs and in lows. Some games I loved, like DJ School, and some I abhorred like Ping Pong and Moai Doo-Wop.
Reaching Remix 6, I was worried as to how I might fare in the second half of the game. I already knew there were 10 levels in all, so I- wait, are those the credits? Yep, after Remix 6, the staff credits roll, and then the last 4 levels are added, making them technically post-game content? That felt odd to me and totally threw off my rhythm of progress. Looking at my backlog and seeing that it was already beat made it hard to continue for a little bit. I finally did come back to it and... well...
Con: The last 4 levels are pretty mid. Most of the games in levels 7-10 are just new harder versions of previous games, and the remixes most of the time use games that weren't even in that level so you have no fair clue as to what may be thrown at you. It sort of feels like this was a "Rhythm Heaven Expert Mode" which was an unpleasant punch to the throat. I love Rhythm Heaven because I feel like it makes rhythm games accessible to people who aren't really any good at them (i.e. me), so to have a slew of games of this manor wasn't exactly fun for me, but I can see why people might like it.
Now, I have to say, Remix 10? Easily made the whole game worth it! Pro: Remix 10 is a bop. Remix 10 incorporates every game up to that point, and strings them all together in a perfect song that ties together the leitmotif of the game present in so many of the songs! Remix 10 made the rough journey worth it for me, and that's saying a lot considering how many things I disliked about this one.
One last Pro: It has one of the best soundtracks ever! Particularly I love Fan Club, The Dazzles, and Karate Man 1 and 2. Fantastic music, even among Rhythm Heaven games! I was blown away!
In the end, despite everything, I still enjoyed Rhythm Heaven DS. It's not a favorite of all time, it's not even a favorite among the series, but it's still a lovely game with an identity of its own. If i had to rate it, I'd give it maybe a 4/5 stars to be fair, but it's far from perfect. Still, I look forward to sticking with the series, as Rhythm Heaven Fever on Wii is next! Be sure to ask questions and suggest new post ideas in my ask box! Stay safe, stay hydrated, and God bless! Happy gaming to ya!
~ Alex

I forgot the rhythm heaven red kraken ask, but i think it was this. What rhythm heaven remix, would fit each member of the red kraken's aesthetic?
I love Rhythm Heaven and I love my OCs so I’m down for this
-Tap: Remix 4 Fever: There are no samurai in the RK, but Tap embodies that warrior spirit
-Samba: Remix 2 DS: There’s nothing with an actual pirate aesthetic, so the beach will do. Not that he would mind laying out in the sun.
-Tango: Remix 5 from Tengoku: Feels a longing regret from the past even though he’s grown too cold to truly face it
-Waltz: Remix 9 Fever: All That RED, she naturally gravitates toward it
-Dougie: Remix 8 DS: Just absolute chaos. Right up his alley (although Machine Remix fits too since he is a mechanic)
-Salsa: Remix 1 from either DS or Fever. It’s nice and easy while still remaining cheerful and upbeat.
-Mac: Lush Remix, since he is a fan of researching various new plants they find on their adventures, and all the plants and the explorer aesthetic for Hole In One vibes well
-Jig: Remix 8 Fever: Similar to Tango where it holds a feeling of looking back on the past, although with a less serious vibe and more of a strange jauntiness.
-Disco: Remix 7 Fever for the sake of her namesake, but in terms of aesthetic, Remix 2 Fever to match that Attitude
-Twist: Remix 10 Fever. A true showing of skill. The Real Deal.

least favorite remix... mm remix 1 tengoku probably, i like the music but not as much as every other remix
what deserved a megamix revamp but didn’t get one? i’m gonna say something other than rap men or dj school as much as those should’ve gotten a revamp, and say iai giri/samurai slice gba and samurai slice endless. if you’re gonna bring all 5 karate man games bring all 4 samurai slices with them

👍 ⭕ ❌ 🔧
👍 - Favorite entry in the series?
Rap women, it’s got some very upbeat and nice music!
⭕- Favorite remix in the series?
I really like a lot of the Fever ones with lyrics, but I’d say my favorite is probably Remix 9 from Fever
❌- Least favorite remix in the series?
Probably Remix 4 from Tengoku, the music was very boring to me. Plus Rap Men only shows up once for the whole remix
🔧 - Minigame that deserved a revamp?
Well, there a lot of minigames that I think deserved to be in Megamix. Of course Rap Men/Women, although if they do you gotta hope they get the voices to sound right in english. Otherwise I’d probably say DJ School, as it’s a fan favorite, and Toss Boys honestly would’ve worked pretty well in Megamix.

Sometimes I mean different things when I say a song gives me emotions.
For example, Tsugumi Umatachi's theme in len'en 4 gives me emotions. It can push me to tears if I'm already in a weepy mood when I listen to it.
The theme for the graveyard stage(?) in kirby's return to dreamland gives me emotions. It makes me feel like I'm floating and also makes me wanna cry but in like. A happy way.
Present World Overhaul gives me emotions. It fills me with immeasurable determination and amazing feats of glory. I've even written lyrics to a part of it that really makes me get emotions.
Remix 10 from Rhythm Heaven Fever makes me feel emotions. It makes me all poppy. Especially when it gets to the snippet of Dreams of our Generation, which by itself also makes me feel emotions of hope.
Rapmen from Rhythm Tengoku makes me feel emotions. It makes me laugh my ass off as I imagine netzach and chesed singing a song about snacks to it instead of the titular Rapmen.

All appearences and references of Wario characters in non-Wario games
I love Wario’s supporting cast, so this was only a matter of time. Also apologies for the long and picture heavy post, but I’m not risking Tumblr messing up a Read More by falsely flagging it again.
Mario's Super Picross (1995)
Tumblr media
Several mooks from Wario Land 1 appear as puzzles.
Game & Watch Gallery 2 (1997)
Tumblr media
A Wandering Goom appears in Wario's Modern version of Ball.
Game & Watch Gallery 3 (1999)
Tumblr media
A Seagull from Wario Land 2, appears in the second stage of Modern Donkey Kong Jr.
Picross NP Vol.7 (2000)
Tumblr media
The game includes a set of Wario Land 2 based puzzles, featuring several mooks and even Captain Syrup!
Dr. Mario 64 (2001)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The roster is almost exclusively Wario Land 3 characters, additionally a Para-Goom hosts the menus.
Super Smash Bros Melee (2001)
The description for the Mario & Wario Bucket trophy mentions Wanda by name.
Game & Watch Gallery 4 (2002)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The game features a update of G&W3's DK Jr. remake, meaning the Seagull is back too and Hen appears alongside Wario in Modern Fire Attack.
Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour (2003)
Tumblr media
Bobo's name can show up on the scoreboard.
Daigasso! Band Brothers (2004)
Ashley's theme is one of the songs in this game.
Donkey Konga 3 (2005)
The Mona Pizza theme is in the game, which doubles as a reference to Mona and a vocal cameo for Sal Out and the Pizza Dinosaur mooks.
Mario Kart Arcade GP/GP 2 (2005/”007)
Tumblr media
While the Diamond City tracks of the Arcade GP games sadly did not bother to include any character cameos, it did have Dribble and Spitz’s taxi place, along with some buildings that may be nods to locations introduced in the first WarioWare and it’s respective characters.
There’s a Gelateria (Mona), a old fashioned japanese castle (Kat & Ana) and a building with the Club Sugar logo on it (Jimmy).
Mario Superstar Baseball (2005)
Tumblr media
Weathervanes from Wario World appear in Wario Palace. And yeah, they are more of a mechansim then characters, but I wouldn't feel complete without counting them.
Rhythm Tengoku (2006/7)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the GBA version the Alien Bunnies appear in in Remix 7 and 8 as cadets in Marching Orders, while the Arcade version gives them a cameo on the congratulations screen.
Rhythm Heaven (2008)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Alien Bunnies make a cameo on the moon in Remix 2, and they also appear on the Superb end screen of Remix 9.
Super Smash Bros Brawl (2008)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kat & Ana appear as a Assist Trophy and Jimmy and some Fronks appear in microgames on the WarioWare Inc. stage.
Much of the WarioWare cast also appears as stickers, namely Wario, Mona, 9-Volt, Jimmy, Kat, Ana, Dribble, Spitz, Orbulon, Dr.Crygor, 18-Volt, Ashley, Penny and Young Cricket. Mike makes no visible appearence, but his theme song has a remix.
Additionally JIMYT, MONA and 9VOLT are some of the names that can be gotten when using the Random Name button.
Jam with the Band (2008)
Ashley's theme was DLC for this game.
Rhythm Heaven Fever (2011)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Alien Bunnies are at it again, making an appearence in Working Dough 2 and even Young Cricket get's to make an appearence, as the male protagonist of Kung-Fu Ball.
Fortune Street (2011)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wario mentions both Rudy and the Black Jewel from Wario World by name.
Mario Party 9 (2012)
Tumblr media
The friends in question that are mentioned here could very well be the WarioWare crew, I like to think so at least.
Mario Kart 8 (2014)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm going to be a bit daring with that claim, but Mount Wario really does make me think of Jimmy's minigame in Game & Wario and having Waluigi serve as the staff ghost for the track heavily strikes me as a nod to ol' Jimmy.
NES Remix 2 (2014)
Tumblr media
Wario's Woods is one of the games featured here, so several Woods characters appear in a bit of a different context due to the objective structure, namely the Sprouts, Wanda, Fauster, Boom and Mad.
Nintendo Badge Arcade (2014)
Tumblr media
The Badge Arcade pretty much used Ashley as a mascot, but even beyond that there was a WarioWare set, featuring the whole main cast of WarioWare + Joe and a Majora's Mask set.
Tumblr media
Additionally there were quite a lot of Wario game cartridge badges, which do technically contain Dangerous Duck, Wandering Goom, Wanda and Sprout cameos, but they are so pixelated and small that it's very hard to tell.
Super Smash Bros For (2014)
Tumblr media
Ashley now joins Kat & Ana as an AT and 5-Volt serves as the major obstacle of the Gamer stage.
WarioWare Inc. returns in the 3DS version and Jimmy and the Fronks are still there, while the Gamer stage has it's own cameos. Said cameos are Ana, 9-Volt, 18-Volt, 5-Volt, Ashley, Mona, Jimmy, Young Cricket, Spitz, Pyoro and the yellow people from Shutter (Mona's Game & Wario microgame).
Lastly Kat, Ana, Ashley, Mona, Dr. Crygor, 5-Volt and 9-Volt all have trophies.
Art Academy: Home Studio (2015)
Tumblr media
A drawing of Ashley appeared in a promo video for the game.
Daigasso! Band Brothers P (2015)
Ashley's theme along with a music video are DLC for this game.
On top of that there is the WarioWare x Band Brothers collab contest, we still don't know which entries won, but we do know that these remixes and relevant character cameos will follow as DLC.
Rhythm Heaven Megamix (2015)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Working Dough 2 is back and thus so are the Alien Bunnies, there is also a plush cameo of Ashley and the entire main cast (at the time) appearing in the Wario...Where? challenge sets. Wario, Mona and Dr. Crygor even make two appearences each.
Super Mario Maker (2015)
Tumblr media
Ashley appears as a Mystery Suit, along with Wario.
Super Smash Bros Ultimate (2018)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The spirit selection covers a very healthy selection of Wario characters, Kat and Ana even serve as a Master Spirit in World of Light, while Ashley retains her AT role.
All stage cameos are still there except for Young Cricket, who is replaced by Penny. Mike still has no direct appearence, but he is referenced in Crygor's spirit battle and his theme is back. Additionally, Bobo is referenced in Captain Syrup's spirit battle.

Rhythm Paradise/Rhythm Heaven
Do you know those moments where you just don’t know what to play at some points? Yup, this time I have no idea what to review. So, let’s see what I’m playing right now... Oh, Rhythm Paradise... from 2009. (This review was from 2014 and usually back then, I reviewed more current games than older ones)
First off, a bit of background to this game series:
This is the sequel to “Rhythm Tengoku”. The first game was only released in Japan for the Game Boy Advance.
The very successful Japanese music producer, writer for lyrics and vocalist Mitsuo Terada or more well known as „TSUNKU♂“ visited Nintendo one day to pitch an idea for a rhythm game which won’t have any visible commands to know the rhythm. Because of the lack of a musical score they were sceptical and thought it would only appeal a small group of people. It was developed for the Game Boy Advance because of the desire of having a small screen and the portability.
Tumblr media
(Screenshots of the Game Boy Advance game)
The game was a success and was praised everywhere. Sega ported it because of its popularity with Nintendo’s staff under the title “Rhythm Tengoku: HD Remixed Edition”.
Tumblr media
The sequel was released 2 years later for the Nintendo DS.
Because of the integration of the touchscreen for the DS, the game only uses the touchpen. You hold the system sideways like a book and tap or flick with the stylus to the soundeffects or voices.
Flicking on the touchscreen can be a problem because the game can sometimes not notice if you just flicked or just let go. This can be a problem when you don’t know how to safely flick, especially at games where it requires from the player to constantly flick all the time.
You have to do a different task depending on the minigame. Switching between tapping in the beat and off-beat, waiting for the right time to flick, tap and flick, imitate different things in the rhythm of the beat and more.
One minigame has a farmer who pounds the ground to catch vegetables and throw away moles. You are in a choir of three in another minigame where you hold the touchpen on the screen to shut up and let go to let the player sing. And in another minigame, you’re a monkey in a group of other monkeys that cheer a singer on.
Tumblr media
Rhythm Paradise has 50 minigames which are divided into 10 rows with 4 minigames and one special minigame, a remix, which is a compilation of past minigames.
Some games are cute, some a odd and others are crazy. The whole game is very similar to the WarioWare games which often contains minigames that made no sense either.
The game ranks you on your performance in the minigame with “Try again!”, “OK” and “Superb”.
At “Try again!” you have to repeat the minigame.
If you achieve “OK”, you can play the next minigame but you won’t earn a reward.
With “Superb”, you’ll earn 1 out of 50 medallions which can unlock new optional minigames.
Once you earn a „Superb“, it can be that the past minigame can also get another objective where you play the entire minigame again but this time, you have the objective to play the game without one single mistake. You have three tries until the objective disappears and you’ll have to wait until it appears again.
Once the objective appears and you did everything successfully, the game will reward you with either the background song, the lyrics to the song or something to read about the minigame.
The “perfect” objectives are optional though so if you don’t want to play them, you can just ignore them and move on.
And if you’re stuck at a minigame and lose 3-times in a row, you have the option to skip it by visiting the cafe.
Tumblr media
The game has an excellent score and it always gives the player a sign when to do what. The songs often get stuck in your head, especially the songs with vocals. Each song got translated into English, German, French, Italian and Spanish.
The graphics almost always use 2D sprites but sometimes it uses 3D models that are often blocky mostly because the WarioWare games also have these kinds of 3D models.
Tumblr media
Almost all minigames were really fun to me because they’re simple yet tough.
Even with the problems of flicking, Rhythm Paradise for the Nintendo DS is an addictive game which music lovers or WarioWare players have to check out.
