something i think more people need to remember about tf2's lore is that it takes place in 1972. Scout is twenty seven years old and the youngest of eight kids. that means he was born in 1945.

if we're assuming scout's mother had a child every other year, counting back, that's 1943, 1941, 1939, 1937, 1935, 1933, 1931 respectively. we know they live in the usa, specifically boston, which is important for state rights.

scout's ma raised eight boys in an era where she could not/did not have the right to:

- work more then a certain amount of hours (pay was cut at the same time) [1912]

-smoke in a public building [1908]

-vote under her birth name, only husband [1945, was repelled later]

-serve on a jury [the first state to allow this was NC in 1946, followed by texas in 1955]

-work at a bar unless her father or husband owned it [1948]

-serve in the army unless under specific restrictions (navy & airforce is a no no, can only be a certain rank) [also 1948]

-receive equal pay and benefits for any jobs [this was changed in 1963]

-protection from discrimination in the workforce [this was added in 1964]

-receive an abortion [rape exceptions in 3 states, slowly spread to others]

-work as a horse jockey [1967]

-have equal property rights to their husbands [the first state to allow this was texas in 1968]

-work as a news reporter [the first female reporters were in 1970]

and other issues that i didnt feel like researching.

spy knew all of this and left her to rot, raising eight boys all on her own. as far as we know he did not send child support and alice (fan name for scout's ma) never married.

spy had more then enough money to help them but chose not to. he also slept with loads of other people (a voiceline confirms he had orgies lmao) and never really made any effort to talk to her or see her.

do you think he looks at scout and feels any sort of shame? seeing how hard he works to send money back home for his mom? hearing scout insist that tom jones is his father, because the topic is so painful he can't stand to think about it? or do you think he doesn't give a shit?

Whether this being is a ghost, or one of Bills tricks I've yet to discover… There are more dubious encounters such as the whispers, spine shivering chills, and of the brief shadowy figures I see down dark hallways. (Proof of an apparition? or simply a hallucination dreamt up by my sleep deprived mind?) I fear my mind is slipping further and further-

The final TF2 issue really got to me. Spoilers, but it’s the reveal that all of this suffering and murder and war over gravel and shitty land was for nothing but senseless, bottomless hatred. That the administrator can’t even remember where this revenge plot started as she flashes through different false memories of her parents’ deaths. There was never a tragic backstory or justification, only terrible people doing despicable things. And despite how crass and stupid and unserious TF2 is, the story subverts every expectation by showing the survivors and inheritors willingly breaking the cycle. Ms. Pauling lies to the administrator and chooses not to save her, and finally lets her die. (Hurts even more if you read into the subtext that Ms. Pauling is in love with the administrator.) She lets the final cache of Australium go and walks away from the burden and legacy of a century-old bloodfeud. Hale lets Gray’s daughter go and live her life freely. Spy is the first to arrive at Scout’s house and meet his big family, finally takes off his mask, and helps with the kids. Even Merasmus exhaustedly makes peace with himself and Soldier and chooses not to curse him or something. There’s nothing to finish, no promises to keep, and no one to avenge. The only thing to do is break the cycle and walk away.

It feels odd how happy and warm everything is, but it feels so right and earned. These bloodthirsty, awful, violent men were expendable cogs in a machine of endless violence, and they found a way out. It’s a genuinely great message about letting go the past that burdens you and finding the will and a way to hit the bricks, change, and be happy. Maybe they don’t technically deserve happiness, but they’ve got it nonetheless, and they’re not gonna let it go to waste. They’re still all crazy and violent, but on their own terms now and with people who love them! Smiles.
