In a revolution in Portugal the monarchy was overthrown and a republic was declared on October 5, 1910.
 Portugal Republic Day
Portugal’s Republic Day is celebrated on October 5 every year and is also known as ‘Implantation of the Republic’ in Portugal. This important day marks the overthrow of the monarchy, the House of Braganca, in 1910. The monarchy had been in power since the 11th century and was replaced by a republican form of government in a bloodless revolution. It also brought about civil and religious liberties. It is a public holiday with schools, state offices, and some restaurants being closed. Like other public holidays in Portugal, Republic Day is not moved to a weekday if it falls on a weekend.
History of Portugal Republic Day
Portugal’s Republic Day commemorates the deposition of the centuries-old Portuguese monarchy and the establishment of the First Portuguese Republic. It was the result of a coup led by the “Portuguese Republican Party.”
By 1910, the Portuguese Kingdom was in the middle of a crisis with people increasingly resenting the royal family due to the 1890 British Ultimatum which demanded the retreat of the Portuguese military forces from the territory between the colonies of Angola and Mozambique, the royal family’s expenses, the assassination of the King and his heir, transforming religious and social views, instability of political parties, Joao Franco’s dictatorship,  and the regime’s inability to adapt to modern times. This national anger helped proponents of the Republican Party to take advantage of the situation. The party skillfully presented itself as the only one capable of returning the country to its original glorious status and advancing its progress.
The military was reluctant to fight the nearly two thousand soldiers and sailors that rebelled between October 3 and 4, and so the Republic was proclaimed the next day from the Lisbon City Hall. A provisional government led by Teófilo Braga led the country till the Constitution was approved, marking the beginning of the First Republic. National symbols like the national anthem and the flag were changed, along with some changes in civil and religious liberties.
The deposed King Manuel II departed from Ericeira and lived out the rest of his days in exile. At the time, Portugal was worried about being recognized by other countries as most European states were monarchies. But soon enough, through skillful diplomacy by the Foreign Affairs Minister, the country was officially recognized by the United Kingdom, France, China, Spain, Italy, Russia, and others.

I had a note from a librarian...
Along these lines:
I am a public school librarian and would like to put your young wizard series in the library this year as I have no joy in promoting HP anymore. What's the best method of getting the whole set hardback where the $ goes back to you the author?
So first of all, to the OP: thanks for being in touch. I'll drop you a note shortly.
That said, the question you raise might be one that's occurred to other people: so I thought I'd handle this part of it in public.
About Young Wizards hardcovers: (rueful look) This is kind of a challenge, as—due to changes of publishers and other weirdness—there has never been a whole-series, unified-format hardcover set of the Young Wizards books in the series's 40-year history.
...Let's take it from the top, and you'll see the problem.
The books' first home was at Delacorte Press, an imprint of Dell Publishing. So You Want To Be A Wizard was published in hardcover in 1983, the Deep Wizardry hc in 1985, and the High Wizardry hc in 1990, with these covers. (The art, respectively, by David Wiesner, Darrell Sweet, and Neal McPheeters.)
Tumblr media
All of these editions are now difficult to find in good condition, especially SYWTBAW, which as a first book in a series by a new/untried author, perhaps understandably had a very small print run, and was mostly sold to libraries. (The run might have been as small as 1500 copies. It's hard to tell now, as this wasn't data that was shared with authors in those days.) As a result, most copies of this edition are either very beat up, or (if in good condition) pretty expensive. The Delacorte DW and HW hardcovers are a little easier to find, but not that much.
In the early 1990s there was a change in publishing direction at Dell shortly after HW came out. The publisher's interest had pivoted toward wanting more bestselling authors; so they jettisoned many then-new or midlist authors so as to be able to pay the best-selling authors more. (In this particular micro-bonfire of the vanities, Dell's stupidity in throwing Jane Yolen overboard, FFS, astounds me to this day.) So though the books continued to be published at other Dell imprints (Laurel-Leaf, Yearling) as paperbacks through the mud-1990s, that was the end of the Dell hardcovers.
The next hardcover publication was therefore in 1990, from GuildAmerica / SF Book Club. Support Your Local Wizard contains SYWTBAW, DW and HW, and was a Book Club bestseller: it sold a quarter million copies and set a record as their most popular new-member-requested book that lasted until they went out of business. As a result, there are a lot of these books around.
Also in plentiful supply is The Young Wizards, which SFBC Fantasy published in 2001. (NB that a lot of sources list this as being a 1984 book, which is incorrect: as it also contains, besides the first three, A Wizard Abroad and The Wizard's Dilemma, this makes it impossible to have been published any sooner than 2001.)
Tumblr media
Anyway, after that, things get a bit simpler. In the mid 1990s the series was picked up by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt / Harcourt Trade Publishers' new YA imprint Magic Carpet Books, which began republishing earlier works. A Wizard Abroad had until then been published only in the UK (in a mass-marker mmpb from Transworld/Corgi); its first hardcover came out from the SF Book Club/GuildAmerica in 1993, Dell having passed on acquiring it. (The cover on this one was done by the fabulous David Cherry, artist and brother of my old colleague C. J. Cherryh.) Harcourt did an unusual small-format hardcover of AWAb in 1997—testing the waters, I think—and then, when that sold strongly, went straight to full-size hardcovers with The Wizard's Dilemma (with art from then until now by Cliff Nielsen) and have stayed with that format since.
Tumblr media
Harcourt also did a lovely 25th anniversary hardcover edition of So You Want To Be A Wizard in 2003, which is easy to find inexpensively. I strongly suspect this republication trend would have continued with Deep Wizardry and High Wizardry when their respective anniversaries came around. But unfortunately the Magic Carpet program wound down soon afterwards, and the most recent volumes have been published simply as HMH.
...So you can see, you've got kind of a mixed bag to deal with. Availability has also been something of an issue, as the books are considered backlist by Harcourt's current owner (HarperCollins), and warehouse supplies of some books in the series have been iffy.
So if I was a librarian in this situation, I'd be tempted to do this: (a) Grab a few used copies of the 25th-anniversary edition of SYW, and a few copies of the The Young Wizards omnibus, to take care of books 1-5. Then (b) see about acquiring all the rest in the Harcourt hardcover editions of volumes 6-10, new or used, as opportunity allows. Royalties come to me off all the Harcourt books, so I'm okay on that count. (And thanks for being concerned about it!)
For all who might be interested: hope this helps!

Today marks one year anniversary of 2022 Iranian uprising against the oppressive Islamic Republic regime. An uprising that started with the brutal murder of a young kurd woman, Mahsa Jina Amini, for "inappropriate hijab".
For the past couple of weeks, the regime has prepared their forces to beat down any new movement immediately. The streets of Tehran and many other cities are lined with anti riot forces and police cars. In Saqez, the home city of Amini family, they've stationed the army around the city to massacre people in case they try to start another wave of protest. Mahsa's father has been arrested alongside some family members of other last year uprising martyrs.
There has been small protesting gatherings in Iran in the last two days, there has already been some arrests and violent crackdowns on protesters. I hear people chanting from my neighborhood homes. The government would commit as many bloodbaths as it takes to secure their position, but you can't beat people into obedience when they hate you from the bottom of their hearts.

Twenty-five years ago — on the night of May 7-8, 1999 — the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, was deliberately bombed by the U.S. Air Force.
This war crime was committed during the 78-day-long bombing of then-socialist Yugoslavia by NATO. Three Chinese journalists were killed. At least twenty were injured.

25 April - Anniversary of Italy's Liberation
Tumblr media
25 April also known as the Anniversary of Italy's Liberation is a national holiday in Italy that commemorates the victory of the Italian resistance movement against Nazi Germany and the Italian Social Republic, puppet state of the Nazis and rump state of the fascists, culmination of the liberation of Italy from German occupation and of the Italian civil war in the latter phase of World War II. That is distinct from Republic Day (Festa della Repubblica), which takes place on 2 June and commemorates the 1946 Italian institutional referendum.
Tumblr media
Every year on 25 April Italy celebrates Liberation Day, known in Italian as Festa della Liberazione, with a national public holiday.
In addition to the closure of schools, public offices and most shops, the day is marked with parades across the country, organised by ANPI, Italy's partisan association which preserves the memory of the Resistance movement against Fascism.
The occasion is held in commemoration of the end of the Fascist regime and of the Nazi occupation during world war two, as well as the victory of Italy's Resistance movement of partisans who opposed the regime.
Formed in 1943, the partigiani comprised a network of anti-Fascist activists, from diverse backgrounds including workers, farmers, students and intellectuals, across Italy.
Resistance
Tumblr media
Together they united in armed resistance against the Nazi occupation and the Fascist regime, making their struggle both a war of liberation and a civil war.
The annual event marks the day in 1945 when a nationwide radio broadcast calling for a popular uprising and general strike against the Nazi occupation and Fascist regime was announced by the National Liberation Committee of Upper Italy (CLNAI), a political umbrella organisation representing the Italian Resistance movement.
This announcement - made by partisan and future president of Italy Sandro Pertini - resulted in the capture and death of Fascist leader Benito Mussolini, who was shot three days later.
The Festa della Liberazione represents a significant turning point in Italy's history, paving the way for the referendum of 2 June 1946 when Italians voted in favour of a republic and against the monarchy which had been discredited during the war and whose members went into exile.
Scurati controversy
Tumblr media
This year's event takes place against the backdrop of a political controversy after the state broadcaster RAI stopped a well-known Italian writer from delivering an anti-fascist monologue on television a few days before the Festa della Liberazione.
Antonio Scurati accused RAI of censorship after his monologue was dropped abruptly from the Saturday night talkshow Chesarà for "editorial reasons".
The writer claimed that the move highlighted the alleged attempts by premier Giorgia Meloni's right-wing government to exert its influence over the state broadcaster which has seen several veteran presenters leave over the last year including Fabio Fazio, Bianca Berlinguer and Amadeus.
In his speech Scurati criticised the "ruling post-Fascist party" for wanting to "re-write history" rather than "repudiate its neo-fascist past".
RAI director Paolo Corsini rejected any talk of censorship, as did Meloni who responded to the controversy by posting Scurati's text on her Facebook page, stating that the broadcaster had "simply refused to pay 1800 euro (the monthly salary of many employees) for a minute of monologue".
Meloni added that the Italian people "can freely judge" the contents of the text which was later read live on air by Chesarà presenter Serena Bortone in an act of solidarity with Scurati.

i think the faeries of cookie run kingdom in general are a waste and that's really sad </3
Tumblr media
okay, face it. faeries are already a banger concept, and kingdom's twist on them is really unique! and very ironic — fae are often depicted to be allergic to silvers. really fun spin on it.
but god..... head in hands.... what did you DOOOOOOOO. it's no secret that the beast yeast arc was (and still is) a mess. but i think it's really sad how these sick ass concepts just.. get executed so poorly??
the thing is, in the 3rd anniversary, devsisters was trying to bite off more than they could chew. the introduction of the beasts was sudden, they felt pretty shoehorned in. i COULD say shadow milk is exempt from this — he's got some decent foreshadowing! can't say the others have it going for them...
okay, sure, introduce the beasts. introduce the faerie kingdom with them. these two things of course go hand in hand. BUT HOLD YOUR HORSES WITH THE BEASTS???
it's okay for crk to introduce new nations! but the faerie kingdom was out of the BLUE. nothing leading to it whatsoever. how are we supposed to deduce anything from what, white lily's prologue asset?
Tumblr media
it's very possible to introduce a new nation and do it right. dare i say the créme republic? there were previous mentions and hints to it ingame, making its introduction decent. see — if executed correctly enough, the faerie kingdom may not have needed too much of that.
let's say.. i dunno... two beast yeast episodes are equal to two days of odyssey. in two days of odyssey past ch1, that'd give us enough about the créme republic and time to learn about it! the good parts, and the gritty. BUT in the 3rd anniversary they were obviously trying to make it a little TOO big...
it'd have been nice to see those two episodes focus around the faerie kingdom, its traditions, its denizens and general environment and culture. there could've been problems without too much of a big bad, hell we could've had an almost beast escape. but then again, it WAS the anniversary, but was releasing lily not enough?
now don't get me wrong here — shadow milk had a spectacular introduction! he kind of saved the story i can't lie LOL but was his releasing from the seal..necessary so soon? of course, we'd just be delaying the inevitable, but it'd be nice to just..explore our surroundings a little first.
most information on faeriewood and the silver kingdom are in the LIMITED artbook </3 which kinda. sucks.
we should've also had time to meet the characters more. elder faerie dying is chill with me, nice to know devsisters aren't afraid to kill someone permanently. the problem is, his death was notably supposed to have impact. but like most people felt nothing... because elder faerie is more or less a plot device. give him a character, traits we can attach ourselves to!
there's a Lot more i could rant about actually, but my wrist hurts and i'm tired. i've posted stuff about the silver knights before. just had to let some of this out. tldr the faerie kingdom and faeries are a cool concept but dear god they were executed AWFULLY

Hello, Tumblr:
Just popping in, after a long absence, to tell you about the pre-order campaign for my Author's Preferred Text editions of the Bone Season series.
As you may know if you've followed me for a while, I wrote my debut novel, The Bone Season, when I was nineteen and still at university. For its tenth anniversary last year, I decided to re-approach the book with ten years' more writing experience under my belt, and have since revised the whole series to bring it in line with the first. Bloomsbury has given the revised series a beautiful new look, with jackets illustrated by Ivan Belikov, the artist behind The Priory of the Orange Tree and A Day of Fallen Night.
The first book is available in hardback now, and the other three are coming in May, in either hardback or paperback. The audiobooks will also be revised, with narration by Alana Kerr Collins. You can pre-order them here.
If you're pre-ordering from the US, the UK or Canada, you can claim a beautiful art print of Paige and Warden by artist Erica Chan. Details here.
I hope you enjoy the revisions as much as I've enjoyed working on them.

The year is 2059. For two centuries, the Republic of Scion has led an oppressive campaign against unnaturalness in Europe.
In London, Paige Mahoney holds a high rank in the criminal underworld. The right hand of the ruthless White Binder, Paige is a dreamwalker, a rare and formidable kind of clairvoyant. Under Scion law, she commits treason simply by breathing.
When Paige is arrested for murder, she meets the mysterious founders of Scion, who have designs on her uncommon abilities. If she is to survive and escape, Paige must use every skill at her disposal – and put her trust in someone who ought to be her enemy.

My dears, here we go and today we open the first door and you can find: De Halve Maen
Tumblr media
De Halve Maen in aktion, Hoorn, Netherlands (27-04-2018) Photographer: Benno Ellerbroek
Infos about her:
Halve Maen (Half Moon) was a Dutch East India Company jacht (similar to a carrack) which sailed into what is now New York Harbor in September 1609. She was commissioned by the Dutch Republic to covertly find a western passage to China.
She had two square sails each on the foremast and main mast and a lateen sail on the mizzen mast. The ship was armed with four smaller cannons, which were positioned in the tween deck between the main mast and the forecastle. The rudder was controlled from the slightly raised aft deck. The crew probably numbered around 20 men. More precise ship data have not been handed down.
The ship was captained by Henry Hudson, an Englishman in the service of the Dutch Republic. After a difficult stormy voyage in ice and snow at the North Cape, the expedition finally reached the Newfoundland Bank and what is now Canada. From Cape Sable, Hudson followed the East American coast southwards to the Delaware River, continuing past Manhattan and Long Island. In the summer of 1609, Hudson sailed along the Hudson River, named after him, to present-day Albany. As Hudson was unable to discover a passage to the Pacific on this route, he returned to the Netherlands.
In 1611, the East India Company sent the Halve Maen from Amsterdam to what was then the East Indies (now Indonesia). There she also served in attacks on rival trading posts, such as Solor in 1613. In 1618, the Halve Maen was set on fire in a battle with English ships off Jakarta and was lost.
To mark the 300th anniversary of Hudson's voyage, a replica of the Halve Maen was built in the Netherlands in 1909 based on plans of similar contemporary ships. The ship, christened Halve Maen II, was shipped from Amsterdam to New York as deck cargo and then sailed on the Hudson River with a crew of 18 under its own sails. This replica burned in 1934.
Another replica was launched in 1989. This was then able to take part in the 400th anniversary of the navigation of the Hudson River. The replica, named Half Moon, travelled the Hudson and its surroundings on various occasions and was based at the New Netherland Museum in New York. Since 30 May 2015, this replica has been on loan to the Westfries Museum in Hoorn for five years.

🪔 ,
January 27 .. Birthday greetings to Ef Jitendra Shishir from Ranchi .. Ef Karan Sharma from Patiala , Punjab .. and to Ef Abhishek Tiwari .. welcome to the 40s club .. the club of the wisest .. love .. 🙏🏽🚩
..
✨ .. remembrance :
January 27 .. on his death anniversary .. we remember Bhanu Gupta .. the maestro behind the soulful enchanting tunes of the mouth organ in Sholay .. admiration ever .. prayers .. 🙏🏽
The hour declares itself as very late and that is the indication for the time to bed , the day , though in the early morn of the next ..
There has been sufficient activity for the Republic Day and with respect to the work .. but there was a moment by the end of the day when feelings were undecided and unsure ... but one labors on ..
"In the realm of lackadaisical moments, time meanders lazily, and enthusiasm wanes. A lack of fervor permeates the air, as tasks unfold with an uninspired rhythm. Colors appear muted, and motivation hovers at a low ebb. It's a tranquil, yet somewhat listless, state where the world seems to move in a gentle, indifferent cadence."
More in the morrow .. for there is travel for the day ..

Codywan Masterpost - 2022-2024
@codywanweek - day 8: 5th Anniversary
This year marks the fifth aniversary of Codywan Week, and the third year I've participated (2022 was my second Star Wars event!), so I decided to celebrate by creating a masterlist of all my Codywan works to date.
Works are ordered approximately from least to most angsty. They are mostly drabbles, and the Codywan relationship is usually left ambigiously platonic/romatic. All SFW.
Fluff and Shenanigans (occasional background angst)
Distraction (affectionate) (AO3) | drabble | Cody tries to reason with his General, who is distracted by other priorities.
See No Evil (AO3) | drabble poem | Cody and Obi-wan stare into each other’s eyes. All in the name of plausible deniability.
Tea Party (AO3) | script and comic | Obi-wan likes taking his tea in the communal rec room, likes when his troopers come past to say hello. But this might be taking it a bit too far...
Post-battle Ritual (AO3) | drabble | As a Jedi, your lightsaber is your life; so keep hold of it. ...Yes, you too.
Face to the Sun (AO3) | drabble | Armour Markings have meaning. Cody's isn't a sunburst.
Shared Custody (AO3) | drabble | Obi-wan keeps losing his lightsaber. Cody takes a different approach to preventative measures.
The Force Provides (AO3) | drabble | One proposal is gracefully declined, and another gleefully accepted.
Multitasking Meditation (AO3) | drabble | A Jedi practices many exercises which increase in complexity over the course of their training. Obi-wan has mastered this one, and so lost the benefit of the lesson it teaches.
Hurt/Comfort (with eventual happy ending)
Harmonic Motion (AO3) | drabble | As a Jedi, maintaining a long-term romantic relationship is hard. But with Cody, with the war over, he finds the right balance.
Sueing for Emotional Damages (AO3) | drabble | Cody might have his General back, but he's still upset that he was tricked into thinking he'd been killed in the first palce. And he knows just who to blame.
Taboo (AO3) | poem | A clone trooper's helmet is as much their face as the one they were created with; something deeply personal to those who have so little. But when Obi-wan tentatively asks to try on Cody's, he doesn't refuse him. His own feelings are no less taboo.
Just Another One of Those Faces (AO3) | drabble | Most plans involving a clone going undercover are doomed to failure… unless it takes place in the heart of the Republic. Obi-wan still worries.
There Were Two in the Bed, and the Little One Said... (AO3) | drabble | Nightmares are never fun, but company makes the aftermath easier.
Silence is Golden | poem | Cody loves his General, but he'll never tell.
Angst (aka. Order 66)
The Nightmare (AO3) | drabble | The Nightmare is unsettling in a visceral way, but after years of the nightly visions they are used to the feeling. And they always wake up. He just needs to wait until he wakes up...
Degrees of Trust (AO3) | drabble | Cody doesn't understand why his General's ‘I trust you’ suddenly stopped being a promise and instead became a pain-filled thing of guilt and grief.
Bonus (not specifically Codywan, but they provide significant inspiration...)
31 Days of Jedi Lies (AO3) | poem | "No, you are NOT fine."

== Love Notes ==
Hey there Lovelies. I'm behind again, what's new? Life is hard sometimes and no matter how much we want to be able to be caught up with what we need to, it just doesn't always work out the way we plan. Society has told us for so long we have to be perfect. Society tells us there's no room for error. But you know what? Life is messy. I don't know what each and every one of you deals with in a day-- and vice versa. Life is complicated, and busy, and best laid plans barely ever go the way they should. Add children, or pets, or family into the mix and it's even messier.
I appreciate all your patience with me, and for all your patience with all the other things in your life that don't always go to plan. It's frustrating at times, but I know eventually things will slow down and look up, and I hope all that happens for you sooner rather than later. Life is messy, but wonderful regardless. I hope it treats you well this week, lovelies. Sending hugs <3
